Jamal's Tenth

It was Tuesday, January 27, 2004. It was evening. I was down in the basement with Two Seconds To Detroit.

“Man, I can’t believe I’m gonna turn a full decade old next Thursday.“, I said. “Well, you’re pretty lucky. I still have to wait until June before I get to be a decade old.“, Steve said. “Yeah, and I and Amanda already beat you guys to turning double digits.“, Ariana said.

“I wonder what I should do to celebrate such a huge milestone.“, I said. “Maybe instead of having ten candles on your birthday cake, you could have just one to celebrate the full decade. That would help save a lot of money on candles.“, Kevin said. “Okay, I’ll consider that thought Kevin. Any other ideas?“, I said.

“Maybe each of us could help you celebrate your birthday the best way we know how every day before your big day.“, Jessica said. “Hey, that’s a great idea, Jess. Yeah, that’s what I’ll do. We could start tomorrow, but there are only nine days left before I become a tweenager. That means I should have less than nine of my friends to help me celebrate each day. How many of my friends are here right now though?“, I said. “Hey, beats us. Try counting.“, Nathan said.

“Okay. One, two, three, four, five, six, seven. Seven of my friends are down here with me right now. So, I guess this means one week.“, I said. “Okay, one week it is. And one week before your birthday would be January 29.“, Steve said. “So, we’ll start this Thursday. Now, which friend of mine wants the first day?“, I said.

Everyone else raised their hand. “I’ll go with Brad.“, I said. “Yes!“, Brad said pumping his fist. “I knew he’d choose me first. To everyone else, sorry. Maybe next year.“, Brad said.

“So, Brad, are you free to come over to my place on Thursday after school?“, I asked. “I sure am.“, Brad said. “Great, then it’s officially settled. Then I’ll determine who gets the next day after Brad.“, I said.

“Can I get Friday?“, Nathan asked. “Sure, Nathan. You can get Friday.“, I said. “Who wants Saturday?“, I asked.

“Me. I want Saturday.“, Jessica said. “Okay, Jess. You got Saturday. And that pretty much covers the remainder of this week.“, I said. “Now, unless anyone else has something to say about next week, let’s all get back to work.“, I said. Then Two Seconds To Detroit started performing again while I started filming again.

It was Thursday, January 29, 2004. It was evening. I and Brad were watching WWE Thursday Night Smackdown! on TV at my place in my room.

“So, this is your way of helping me celebrate? Watching wrestling?“, I asked. “Yeah, what’s wrong with that?“, Brad asked. “Dude, how in the world is professional wrestling related in any way to my tenth birthday?“, I asked.

“Because Smackdown! is about a half-decade old now. I thought you might wanna celebrate turning twice as old as it.“, Brad said. “Well, since you put it like that, it is Thursday after all.“, I said agreeing with Brad. “Yeah, that’s the birthday spirit!“, Brad said. Then I and Brad continued watching professional wrestling.

It was Friday, January 30, 2004. It was evening. I and Nathan were in my bedroom.

“So, now that we’re here, how are you gonna help me celebrate?“, I asked. “Well, since there’s no school tomorrow, I say we make a list of ten video games we want to play in a single night. Then we play all ten of them in a single night.“, Nathan said. “Ten video games? In a single night? That’s a lot of video games.“, I said.

“Come on, it’ll be fun.“, Nathan said. “Oh, alright. You wanna try and get this done on my PS1? I have more than ten PS1 games.“, I said. “Sure. Now, what game should be our first of the night?“, Nathan asked.

“Hold on for a second.“, I said. Then I went and grabbed a pencil and notepad. I opened the notepad.

“Okay, I’ll write the list down. Then we’ll both play each video game for exactly fifteen minutes to save time before you have to head back home. Got it?“, I said. “Got it. And since it’s your special day that’s getting close, you get the pick the first game.“, Nathan said. “Okay, cool. I think I’ll go with Spyro The Dragon as our first game.“, I said.

“Loving it. Loving it. Okay, what else?“, Nathan said. “Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater for number two.“, I said. “Liking it. Liking it. What else?“, Nathan said.

“NBA Live 2000 for number three.“, I said. “Of course, because you like basketball. And for number four?“, Nathan said. “Number four will be Frogger.“, I said. “Okay, you can write that down too.“, Nathan said before I started writing.

I finished writing number four. “Number five?“, Nathan asked. “Number five will be Dave Mirra’s Freestyle BMX.“, I said.

“You know, you sure do have some pretty old games.“, Nathan said. “Well, they’re PlayStation 1 games. What else did you expect?“, I said. “What is number six gonna be?“, Nathan asked.

“I got a golf game that I forgot the name of. That’ll be number six.“, I said. I wrote down the sixth video game. “Okay, we’re starting to get pretty close to ten. Number seven?“, Nathan said.

“I have two Crash Bandicoot games. Those will be numbers seven and eight.“, I said. I started writing down the seventh and eighth video games. I finished writing for now.

“And just like that, we only got two more games to go. So, what should our last two games be?“, Nathan said. “There’s another game that I forgot the name of that has motorcycles in it. And there’s another game I forgot the name of that got pool in it. I think.“, I said. “Great, now we have our list. Now, I say we don’t waste any time with this plan and start playing.“, Nathan said.

I finished writing. “Okay, I’ll get everything set up.“, I said. Then I went ahead and set everything up for us to play. “Okay, you do that. I’ll wait. I hope that I don’t have to use the restroom during any of those fifteen-minute periods. Or else, I’ll have ten minutes instead of fifteen.“, Nathan said. I continued setting it all up.

It was Saturday, January 31, 2004. It was in the afternoon. I and Jessica were in the living room at my place.

“Okay, Jess, how are you gonna help me celebrate my tenth birthday?“, I asked. “I think we should celebrate by dancing to music.“, Jessica said. “Oh, I don’t really think that’s a good idea. I’m not really a dancer.“, I said.

“Come on, it’ll be fun.“, Jessica said. “But I don’t know how to dance.“, I said. “Don’t worry, I’ll show you what to do and what not to do along the way.“, Jessica said.

“Okay, fine. But this is only a one-time thing.“, I said. Jessica had a CD in her hand and walked up to the radio in the living room. She inserted the CD into the radio’s CD player and started playing it.

Tootsee Roll by 69 Boyz started playing. Jessica started dancing to that song. Meanwhile, I was watching Jessica’s dancing skills on full display.

“Come on, let’s dance.“, Jessica said as she was dancing. I started dancing. And I was terrible at it.

“So, how am I doing so far?“, I asked as I was dancing. “You’re doing terrible so far, but don’t worry. Just keep practicing and you’ll get better at it eventually.“, Jessica said as she was dancing. I and Jessica continued dancing as I was still doing terrible.

Moments later, Whoomp! There It Is by Tag Team was playing. “Okay, Jamal, watch me.“, Jessica said as she was trying to teach me how to dance. Jessica started dancing to Whoomp! There It Is by Tag Team. And she was a good dancer.

She was dancing well to Whoomp! There It Is by Tag Team. She continued dancing. And then she stopped dancing.

“Okay, let’s see what you’ve got.“, Jessica said. Jessica continued dancing. I started dancing with Jessica. Jessica stopped dancing and saw me dancing. I stopped dancing.

“What?“, I asked. “You’re still terrible.“, Jessica said. “Yeah, I know.“, I said.

Moments later, Jessica was dancing to Jump Around by House of Pain. She was dancing to that song very well. She continued dancing to the song as I was watching her. She continued dancing some more. And then she stopped dancing.

“Okay, now, you try it.“, Jessica said. Jessica continued dancing. I started dancing with Jessica. I was still a terrible dancer.

I continued dancing with Jessica and my dancing skills still didn’t improve. They didn’t even improve a little. I continued dancing with Jessica some more.

Moments later, Jessica was dancing to Around The World by Daft Punk. I was sitting down watching and studying Jessica as she was dancing to the song. Jessica continued dancing. And Jessica continued dancing some more. Then Jessica stopped dancing.

“Okay, go ahead and give it a try.“, Jessica said. Jessica resumed dancing. I got up and did some more dancing.

And I was still a bad dancer. I stopped dancing. “You know, maybe singing is my thing instead of dancing.“, I said.

“You can start singing after you learn dancing.“, Jessica said as she was still dancing. I continued dancing with Jessica. And my dancing still showed no signs of improvement.

Moments later, Jessica started playing another song. Then Jessica started dancing to Let Me Clear My Throat by DJ Kool. I got up from where I was sitting and started dancing with Jessica. I was still a terrible dancer.

My mother walked into the living room. “Are y’all having a party in here or something?“, my Mom asked. Jessica stopped the music.

“What? No, no party here. I’m trying to teach Jamal how to dance while also helping him celebrate his upcoming birthday.“, Jessica said. “Oh, and how is he coming along so far?“, my Mom asked. “I’m not coming along at all. I still suck at dancing.“, I said.

“Well, just keep trying. You’ll eventually get better at it.“, my Mom said. My Mom left the living room. “Isn’t that the same thing you said?“, I asked.

“Come on, let’s try a different song.“, Jessica said. Then Jessica went ahead and started trying to play a new song. “Of all the ways I could’ve spent my Saturday afternoon, why did it have to be this?“, I asked myself. “Because we’re friends and that’s what friends are for.“, Jessica said.

Moments later, Jessica was dancing to We Got The Beat by The Go-Go’s. I was sitting down and watching Jessica dance to try and learn as much as I could from her. Jessica stopped dancing.

“Okay, now you go ahead and give it a try.“, Jessica said. “You know what, no. I quit.“, I said. I got up and walked to my room.

Jessica stopped the song. “Wait, come back! We have like a gazillion more songs left! You can’t quit! How are you gonna learn how to dance as a pre-teen?!“, Jessica said. I walked back into the living room. “Let’s just watch some TV instead. And you can continue teaching me how to dance next Saturday.“, I said.

I sat down, grabbed the TV remote, and turned on the TV. Jessica sighed. “You’re no fun. You know that?“, Jessica said.

“I know something that isn’t fun. And that’s dancing. I mean, the idea is so stupid if you think about it. Moving your body to music. I’d rather listen to music sitting down than waste my energy dancing to it.“, I said. “But dancing is good exercise.“, Jessica said. “And so is laughter. I’m laughing at that last statement in my head right now.“, I said.

Jessica sat down to watch TV with me. “You’re turning ten but you dance like a five-year-old.“, Jessica said. “What?“, I asked. “You heard what I said.“, Jessica said. Then I left that statement alone as I and Jessica were watching TV together.

It was Sunday, February 1, 2004. It was in the afternoon. I was at Ariana’s place.

I was sitting on the living room couch next to Ariana. “So, how are you gonna help me celebrate my big day?“, I asked. “Hold on.“, Ariana said.

Ariana went into her backpack that was lying on the floor and pulled out a tall can of pizza-flavored Pringles. “Here you are.“, Ariana said as she handed me the Pringles. “I know how much you love pizza. So, this is my way of helping you celebrate.“, Ariana said.

“Thanks. And you got the tall can instead of the short can. Impressive.“, I said. “You’re welcome. So, are you watching the Super Bowl tonight? I know I am.“, Ariana said. “Nah, I don’t watch football.“, I said.

’Well, maybe you could stick around and watch the Super Bowl with me. Would that be okay with you?“, Ariana said. “Yeah, sure. That’s fine with me.“, I said. “Awesome. They’re doing pre-game coverage of the big game right now. Let’s go ahead and tune in.“, Ariana said. Ariana grabbed the TV remote and turned on the TV. Pre-game coverage of Super Bowl XXXVIII appeared on the TV screen.

As I and Ariana were watching the pre-game show, I opened my can of Pringles and started eating them. Ariana got her own can of pizza-flavored Pringles from her backpack and started eating them. Pre-game coverage of Super Bowl XXXVIII. “So, since the Super Bowl uses Roman numerals, how well can you read Roman numerals?“, Ariana asked.

“Not that well.“, I said. “Well, I know how to read Roman numerals. Mostly. If you want, I could teach you how to read them.“, Ariana said. “No thanks. Jessica tried teaching me how to dance yesterday to celebrate my birthday. And she wasn’t successful. At all. I’ve had just about enough teaching for one weekend.“, I said.

“Hey, speaking of dancing, I’m a pretty good dancer myself. I could teach you a thing or two sometime after your birthday. Would that be cool with you?“, Ariana said. “I’ll consider it. Maybe you’d be a better dance teacher than Jess.“, I said. Then we continued eating Pringles and watching TV.

It was Monday, February 2, 2004. It was evening. I and Amanda were standing in my room.

“So, how are you gonna help me celebrate my upcoming birthday this Thursday?“, I asked. “Hold on.“, Amanda said. Amanda reached into her pants pocket, pulled out some pink lipstick, put some pink lipstick on her lips, and put the pink lipstick in her backpack.

Amanda tried kissing me. I backed up. “What? What’s wrong?“, Amanda asked.

“I think we should save all the kissing for my birthday.“, I said. “Excellent idea. I can’t wait to finally know what it feels like to kiss a tweenage boy.“, Amanda said. “Yeah, and besides, we’ve made out plenty of times before. Three days without kissing shouldn’t be a problem for us.“, I said.

“So, what should we do while we’re not kissing?“, Amanda asked. “I don’t know.“, I said. “Well, I’m sure we’ll think of something.“, Amanda said.

Then there was silence as both of us were trying to think of a way to spend our time together without kissing. “Hey, you wanna play video games together on my PlayStation?“, I asked. “I’m not really in the PlayStation mood tonight. And besides, Steve has the PlayStation 2. I would be in the mood to play video games if you had the two instead of the one.“, Amanda said.

“Yeah, you make a good point. Hey, what about watching TV?“, I said. “I’m not in the TV mood either.“, Amanda said. “How about we watch a movie?“, I asked.

“The same as TV unless we were going out to see a movie in a movie theater.“, Amanda said. “How about we both read a book?“, I asked. “I’m not in the mood for reading.“, Amanda said.

“Okay, how about we just talk?“, I asked. “Okay.“, Amanda said. I sat down on my bed. “Here, have a seat.“, I said. Amanda sat down next to me.

“So, what do you want to talk about?“, I asked. “I don’t know. What do you want to talk about?“, Amanda asked. “I don’t know what I want to talk about.“, I said.

“So, I guess this means we’re back to doing nothing again.“, Amanda said. “Unless we sit here in silence and eventually come up with something to talk about.“, I said. “Okay, that’s fine with me.“, Amanda said. I and Amanda just sat there.

“So, have you watched any good NBA games recently?“, I asked. “Well, I’ve been watching the Pistons a lot. They are playing so good this year, I think they might just win it all this season.“, Amanda said. “Yeah, I think so too. I’ve also been watching a lot of Pistons basketball.“, I said.

“This is great. We’re finally doing something besides making out. I can’t believe it.“, Amanda said. “It’s a miracle.“, I said. “I would call it more of a longshot, but a miracle is just as accurate.“, Amanda said.

“So, now that we’ve talked about sports, what else do you want to talk about?“, I asked. “I don’t know. Let’s sit here and think about what our next topic of conversation should be.“, Amanda said. “You got it.“, I said.

I and Amanda sat there thinking. Without me looking, Amanda pulled out a few Tic Tacs, ate them, and put the rest of the Tic Tacs back in her backpack. “Hey, guess what.“, Amanda said. “What?“, I asked.

Amanda quickly kissed me as our lips started touching again. And Amanda gave in to the long wait before my birthday. Then I gave in to the long wait as well as she got on top of me and started dominating me on my own bed.

“So, how are you gonna help me celebrate my birthday which is only a couple of days away.“, I said. “With this.“, Kevin said. Kevin picked up a chess game that was all in a box. Kevin put the box back down on the living room table.

“I’m allowing you to have a chance at finally beat someone at chess that’s older than you for the first time.“, Kevin said. “Awesome. Let’s do this. You’re going down buddy.“, I said. “Yeah, save all the trash talk for Madden. Buddy.“, Kevin said.

One hundred seven moves later, the game ended. “Well, it’s a tie. Good game. This is probably the first time you’ve ended up in a stalemate with a chess opponent that’s older than you.“, Kevin said. “That is a first for me. Good game to you as well. Now, what do we do?“, I said.

“We can either play another game, play some Madden, or watch TV.“, Kevin said. “I choose the one without the competition involved.“, I said. “TV it is.“, Kevin said.

“You go turn on the TV. I’ll go ahead and put this game away somewhere.“, Kevin said. “You’re going down next time.“, I said as I was turning on the TV. “Yeah, in your dreams.“, Kevin said as he was putting away the chess game.

It was Wednesday, February 4, 2004. At Steve’s place, it was evening. I was standing in the living room with Steve.

“So, it’s the final day of my birthday. One more trip to the bed and I’ll finally move on from single digits. How is my best friend gonna help me celebrate?“, I said. “Well, I’ve been thinking about that question for a while now. And since you’re my best friend, I decided to let you decide. We can celebrate your birthday eve however you want.“, Steve said. “Wow, thanks, man. That means a lot to me. I really appreciate it.“, I said. “You’re welcome. Now, the real question is this. How do you want to celebrate?“, Steve asked. “You know what? I think I know the perfect activity.“, I said.

Moments later, I and Steve were sitting at opposite sides of the living room table as we were about to play a game of Chess. “Okay, everything is set up. But why did you pick Chess? I’m just curious.“, Steve said. “It was Kevin’s idea yesterday. Do you know how to play?“, I said.

“I sure do. Do you?“, Steve said. “I also know how to play.“, I said. “Well, let’s p.l.a.y. You get to go first since you’re the birthday eve boy.“, Steve said. We started playing.

Fifty-four moves later, the game ended. “Well, looks like we were both so evenly good at chess that we ended up in a draw.“, Steve said. “Hey, I ended up in a draw with Kevin yesterday. Seems like I can really hang with you two when it comes to Chess.“, I said.

“Yeah, but I’ll get you next time. Let’s go ahead and watch some TV.“, Steve said. “In your dreams. And okay. I’ll clean up all this Chess stuff.“, I said. I started putting away the Chess game while Steve started turning on the TV.

It was Thursday, February 5, 2004. It was evening. At my place, I was sitting at the dining room table. Meanwhile, my mother was in the kitchen lighting the candle on my chocolate birthday cake.

Once she was done with the candle, she picked up the cake and started carrying it into the dining room. “Happy birthday to you. Happy birthday to you. Happy birthday, dear Jamal. Happy birthday to you.“, my Mom sang while carrying the cake. Once she was done singing, she set the cake down on the dining room table and turned off the dining room light.

“Okay, time to make a wish and blow out the candle.“, my Mom said. “Before I do the traditional birthday wish and candle blowing, I have a question. Why did you give me only one candle instead of ten? I’m freaking ten years old for crying out loud. This is a big deal in a kid’s childhood. How in the world did you forget the other nine?“, I said. “I didn’t forget the other nine. I only got one to represent your first full decade of living. A decade equals ten years.“, my Mom said.

“I already know what a decade equals. Okay, here goes nothing.“, I said. I closed my eyes, made my wish, and blew out the candle successfully. “Okay, now that this part of the birthday tradition is finally over. I’m ready for some birthday dessert. I’ve been waiting all year for this.“, I said.

My mother turned on the dining room light and was about to cut me a few slices of birthday cake. A knock was heard at the front door. “Don’t worry, Mom. I’ve got it.“, I said.

I got up and walked to the front door. “Who is it?!“, I asked. “It’s Steve.“, Steve said.

I opened the door. “Hey, Steve. What’s up.“, I said. “Hey, I’ve got a special surprise for you down in the basement. Come on, follow me.“, Steve said.

Steve started heading for the basement. “I’ll be right back. Oh, and keep that chocolate birthday ice cream in the freezer until I get back.“, I said as I grabbing my shoes and leaving my place. I left my home.

Moments later, I went down into the basement and saw Two Seconds To Detroit. “Hey, what’s everyone doing here without me filming?“, I asked. “Since it’s your birthday, you don’t have to film us tonight.“, Ariana said.

“Okay, so, why am I down here? What’s the surprise?“, I asked. “We decided to perform one song to honor you officially becoming a tweenager.“, Jessica said. “And we all think you deserve it very much.“, Kevin said.

Steve put a folded chair behind me. “Here, sit.“, Steve said. I sat down.

Steve got behind the microphone. “Now, this song was released in 1994 which was the same year my best friend sitting over there was born. This is Interstate Love Song by Stone Temple Pilots. Let’s rock and roll! Birthday style!“, Steve said. Interstate Love Song by Stone Temple Pilots started being played by Two Seconds To Detroit.

Waiting
On a Sunday afternoon
For what I read between the lines
Your lies

Feelin’
Like a hand in rusted shame
So do you laugh or does it cry
Reply

Leavin’ on a southern train
Only yesterday you lied
Promises of what I seemed to be
Only watched the time go by
All of these things you’ve said to me

Breathing
Is the hardest thing to do
With all I’ve said and all that’s dead for you
You lied
Goodbye

Leavin’ on a southern train
Only yesterday
You lied
Promises of what I seemed to be
Only watched the time go by
All of these things I’ve said to you

Two Seconds To Detroit stopped performing that song. I got up and clapped. “Amazing. That was truly amazing. Even though I didn’t get a birthday party this year, I just want to thank you all so much for making my tenth birthday a lot more special and memorable. What in the world would I do without you people?“, I said.

“I don’t know. Probably get eaten by the Boogey Man.“, Jessica said. “Okay, yeah, thanks for sharing that disturbing thought, Jess.“, I said. “Anytime.“, Jessica said smiling.

“Oh, I almost forgot. I have a birthday present for you as well.“, Amanda said walking up to me and smiling. Amanda put her arms around me and started kissing me. Then I put my arms around her as we were kissing. The kissing continued some more until Amanda was fully satisfied. Then Amanda was fully satisfied and the kissing stopped.

Amanda wiped her mouth with her sleeve and started smiling at me. “Well, looks like someone wanted to get Valentine’s Day started early.“, Brad said. “So, do you like my present?“, Amanda asked smiling.

“Like my present? I love my present. And thanks to my girl over here for making my tenth birthday a lot sweeter. Hey, speaking of sweets, my birthday dessert is still waiting for me back at my place. I’ll see you all later. Thank you all for making my tweenage birthday so awesome. See ya.“, I said. “Alright, see ya later dude. And have a wonderful rest of your birthday.“, Kevin said. I headed back up the basement stairs.

“Wow, two desserts in one birthday? That’s gotta be a record or something.“, Nathan said. “And there’s 364 more of those where that came from before the next birthday. Come on everyone, let’s all continue practicing.“, Amanda said. And finally, Two Seconds To Detroit got back together again and continued practicing.
