Leap Day

It was Sunday, February 29, 2004. It was early in the afternoon. At Steve’s place, Steve was sitting on the living room couch watching TV.

A knock was heard at the front door. Steve got up to go see who it was. Steve walked up to the front door.

“Who is it?“, Steve asked. “It’s me.“, I said. Steve opened the door for me. I walked inside.

Steve closed the front door. “Hey.“, Steve said as he was walking back to the couch. “Hey.“, I said after sitting down on the couch.

Steve sat down next to me on the couch. “What are you watching?“, I asked. “Oh, you know, just the usual.“, Steve said.

“I see.“, I said. I and Steve were watching TV. Then a thought came to my mind.

“Hey, this is our first leap day as best friends. I think we should celebrate.“, I said. “I think that’s a great idea. But how are we gonna celebrate a day that’s even rarer than Christmas?“, Steve said. “I say we think of anything that can relate to an extra day on the calendar and go from there.“, I said.

“Well, do you have any suggestions?“, Steve asked. “No, I don’t. Do you?“, I said. “I also don’t have any suggestions.“, Steve said.

“Don’t worry, we should be able to come up with something real soon.“, I said. “Let’s just hope that real soon doesn’t mean March.“, Steve said. I and Steve were thinking.

“We could both go outside and celebrate Leap Day that way. Besides, we both should get out of the house and get some fresh air instead of being a couple of couch potatoes all day.“, I said. “You’re starting to sound like my Dad. I like that idea. Let’s go.“, Steve said. Then I and Steve got up and started getting ready to head outside.

“Wait, how cold is it gonna be outside? We might need to put on a coat or jacket before we head outside.“, Steve said. “Well, let’s look at The Weather Channel and see how cold it’s gonna be today.“, I said. I picked up the TV remote and tuned in to The Weather Channel.

I sat down and started watching The Weather Channel. “You know, I know an easier way to check the weather.“, Steve said. “You do? How?“, I asked.

“We have a digital cable channel called Weatherscan. It gives you the local weather 24/7 instead of waiting for The Weather Channel to provide the local weather every ten minutes on the eights.“, Steve said. “I already know what Weatherscan is. Well, I guess we should both make it easier on ourselves and tune in to Weatherscan.“, I said. I picked up the TV remote and tuned in to Weatherscan.

I and Steve were sitting down and watching Weatherscan. “You know, this station sure does have some nice music. Maybe the band should get together one day and perform these tunes.“, Steve said. “I thought Two Seconds To Detroit was a rock band. Not an easy listening band.“, I said. “Then I guess we’ll just have to make our own rock versions of the Weatherscan music.“, Steve said. I and Steve continued watching Weatherscan.

Later that afternoon, I and Steve were standing at the playground down the street from the apartment complex. “Okay, the first thing I think we should do to celebrate Leap Day is to write our 2008 selves a letter. Then we both talk about what we wrote down after we’re finished.“, Steve said. “But I don’t know what to write. What should I write down?“, I said.

“Write down what you hope to happen in the next four years. You can write whatever you want to your future self. Then we both set the delivery date for the next Leap Day which will be February 29, 2008.“, Steve said. “Sounds like a plan. Dude, 2008 is so far away. You’ll be 13 when the next Leap Day arrives. And I’ll be 14.“, I said. “Which means we’ll both be teenagers on the next Leap Day.“, Steve said.

“I wonder what we’ll think when we read these letters four years from now.“, I said. “By that time, the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 2 should be out.“, Steve said. “I wonder what the next Nintendo console is gonna be called.“, I said. “Well, let’s not waste any more time thinking about what the future might hold. Or else, we’ll both have to wait four years to have this kind of opportunity again. Let’s start writing.“, Steve said.

Steve pulled out two notepads from his jacket pocket and handed one of the notepads to me. Then he pulled out two pencils from his other jacket pocket and handed one of the pencils to me. We both sat down at a nearby table and started writing.

Moments later, we were both done writing. “Okay, let’s start talking about what we wrote down. You first.“, Steve said. “Okay, this is what I wrote down.“, I said.

“Dear 2008 self, what I hope will happen in the next four years is that I and Amanda are still together. I also hope that I and Steve are still best friends. Furthermore, I hope that I own a PlayStation 3, Xbox 2, and/or the current generation Nintendo console in 2008.“, I read out loud. “That’s some of what I wrote down for my letter. What did you write down?“, I said. “Alright, here’s what I put down on paper.“, Steve said.

“Dear 2008 self, what I hope will happen in the next four years is that I and Ariana are still boyfriend and girlfriend. I also hope that I and Jamal are still best friends. Furthermore, I hope that I own a PS3, Xbox 2, and/or the current generation Nintendo console in 2008.“, Steve read out loud. “Now, let’s hold on to these letters, keep them in a safe place, and not forget where we put them once Leap Day 2008 arrives.“, I said. I and Steve put both letters in our jacket pockets.

“So, now what?“, I asked. “Hey, there’s some of our friends over there. Let’s go.“, Steve said. Steve got up and walked away. I also got up and walked away.

A few moments later, I and Steve walked up to Amanda, Ariana, Jessica, Kevin, Nathan, and Brad. “Hey, what’s up everyone?“, Steve asked. “Hey, you two.“, Brad said.

“So, what are you two up to today?“, Kevin asked. “We’re both celebrating Leap Day today.“, I said. “Leap Day? Seriously?“, Ariana asked.

“What? Is there something wrong with celebrating Leap Day?“, Steve asked. “Yes, there is. Leap Day is not a holiday. And it also shouldn’t be considered a holiday. The extra day is just there to keep the calendar in sync with Earth’s rotation. You two are wasting your time.“, Ariana said. “We’re not wasting our time if the next Leap Day is in 2008.“, I said.

“Since my girl here knows so much about Leap Day, I say we all share some interesting facts about leap years.“, Steve said. “Okay, that’s fine with me.“, Ariana said. “So, who wants to go first?“, Steve asked.

“I’ll go first.“, Kevin said. “Okay, go ahead Kev.“, Steve said. “Did you know that the U.S. presidential election and the Summer Olympics always occur in leap years?“, Kevin asked.

“Okay, who here can beat that?“, Steve asked. “In 10,000 years, the calendar system will have to be reconsidered.“, Nathan said. “Very interesting fact, Nathan. Anyone else?“, Steve said.

“A leapling is a term given to people who are born on February 29.“, Amanda said. “Woah, wait a minute. Timeout.“, Brad said hand signaling a timeout. “If a person is born on February 29, how does that person celebrate his or her birthday on a non-leap year?“, Brad asked.

“They either have two birthdays on February 28 or March 1 on non-leap years while celebrating a single birthday on February 29 or they celebrate a single birthday every four years. My grandmother is a leapling herself and she celebrates her birthday every year with the first option.“, Amanda said. “Well, if I was born on a Leap Day, I’d also go with the first option. I mean think about it, you get two birthdays in one year on non-leap year days which means you’re celebrating more birthdays than everyone else. And that also means more cake and presents. With the second option, you’d have to wait every four years for cake and presents and you get fewer birthdays than everyone else. The first option is a no-brainer in my opinion.“, Brad said. “Well, speaking of non-leap years, did you know that any year that isn’t a leap year is called a common year?“, Ariana asked.

“Any year evenly divisible by four is a leap year, but there are a few exceptions to that rule. Any year that is evenly divisible by one hundred is an exceptional common year. And any year evenly divisible by four hundred is an exceptional leap year.“, Kevin said. “There are fourteen possible calendars. Half of them are leap years.“, Nathan said. “Leap years were introduced over two thousand years ago.“, Brad said.

“How do you all know so much about leap years?“, I asked. “Jess, you’ve been pretty quiet lately. Anything you’d like to share with us when it comes to the leap years?“, Steve said. “Yes, I would.“, Jessica said.

“An entire calendar year is determined by only two factors. What day of the week it starts on and whether or not it’s a leap year. And since there are seven days in a week, seven times the two factors equal fourteen. That’s why there are fourteen possible calendar years.“, Jessica said. “Hey, nice one, Jess.“, Brad said. “Thank you.“, Jessica said.

“This leap year started on a Thursday which makes it the twelfth possible calendar year.“, Ariana said. “Alright, alright, I think that’s enough interesting Leap Day facts for one Leap Day.“, Steve said. “Oh, yeah, that’s right. These two don’t want to waste their precious Leap Day before 2008.“, Ariana said.

“How did you all learn so many interesting facts about Leap Day?“, I asked. “The internet.“, Jessica said. “I should’ve known.“, I said.

“So, how else should we all spend the rest of our Leap Day?“, I asked. “I know, all of you can write your 2008 selves a letter and talk about what you wrote down. Just write down what you hope to happen in the next four years and set the delivery date for February 29, 2008. I and Jamal already wrote down our letters.“, Steve said. “Sounds cool to us.“, Amanda said.

“Okay, everyone can go ahead and get started.“, Steve said. The rest of the kids (except Kevin) walked to any table or bench that they could find and started writing. “I already know what I want to happen in the next four years. And that’s to have just one girlfriend again.“, Kevin said.

“Hey, I think I see your second girlfriend walking over here right about now.“, I said. “What?! Where?! Hide me!“, Kevin said. Kevin hid behind me and Steve.

“Ha, fooled you.“, I said. Kevin stopped hiding behind me and Steve. “Fool me like that again and I’ll kill you.“, Kevin said.

“Hey, I think I see her coming this way right about now.“, Steve said. “That goes for you too.“, Kevin said. “No, I’m for real. She’s heading this way as we speak.“, Steve said.

Kevin quickly hid behind me and Steve again. “Ha, fooled you.“, Steve said. Kevin stopped hiding behind me and Steve.

“Okay, if both of you fool me like that again, I’m killing both of you.“, Kevin said. “Look, there she goes!“, I and Steve said at the same time. Kevin quickly hid behind me and Steve.

I and Steve were laughing. Kevin stopped hiding behind me and Steve. “Okay, instead of just killing you, I’m going to get you two anyway I can. And you won’t know when it’ll come, where it’ll come, or how it’ll come. But it’ll come. And then boom! You won’t even know what hit you two.“, Kevin said. Kevin walked away to start writing his letter. I and Steve saw Kevin walking away and resumed laughing.

Moments later, everyone else finished writing and walked back to me and Steve. “Okay, now, let’s talk about what all of you wrote down.“, Steve said. “Let’s start with you, Amanda.“, I said.

“Okay, what I hope to happen in the next four years is that I and Jamal are still together.“, Amanda said. “Hey, that’s the same thing I was hoping for with Steve.“, Ariana said. “I hoped for more video games.“, Nathan said. “Hey, me too.“, Brad said.

“I hoped to become a teenager in the next four years.“, Jessica said. “But isn’t that automatically gonna happen?“, Steve asked. “Oh, well, forget what I just said. I hope to become a famous teenage singer.“, Jessica said. “But what about the band?“, Ariana asked.

“Or a famous teenage rapper.“, Jessica said. “Again, what about the band, Jess?“, Amanda asked. “Okay, you know what, it’s obvious that none of you like what I wrote down so I’m gonna just drop it.“, Jessica said.

“Are you also gonna drop your membership in Two Seconds To Detroit?“, Nathan asked. “Ugh, fine! I’ll change it later! Now, can we please move on with our lives? Thank you very much.“, Jessica said. “Okay, we’ve covered Amanda, Ariana, Nathan, Brad, and Jess. Are we forgetting someone? Oh, yeah. We almost forgot the boy with two girlfriends.“, I said.

Everyone (except Kevin) laughed. The laughing stopped. “What I hoped for was to have one girlfriend again. And that means still being with Stacy and only Stacy. I also hoped I’ll never accidentally start an online relationship with a chick a second time.“, Kevin said.

“That’s nice to hear, Kev. But is there anything you wrote down that has nothing to do with your love life?“, Steve said. “No. No, there isn’t.“, Kevin said. “Hey, I see your girlfriend coming over here as we speak.“, Brad said.

“Oh, no! Hide me!“, Kevin said. Kevin quickly hid behind Brad. “Ha, I got you good.“, Brad said.

Kevin stopped hiding behind Brad. “You all are just having fun with this. Aren’t you?“, Kevin said. “Yeah, pretty much.“, Jessica said.

“Was there something in there that hoped to not be single after two girlfriends? Or did I miss that part?“, Nathan asked. All of us (except Kevin) laughed. All of us (except Kevin) walked away to do some random things on the playground to celebrate an extra day. “Yeah, yeah, yeah. Laugh all you want. But pretty soon, you’ll all be in my shoes someday and have two boyfriends or girlfriends.“, Kevin said. Kevin walked away to another spot on the playground.

Later that afternoon, I was down in the basement of the apartment complex with Two Seconds To Detroit. “Alright, now it’s time for us to rock and roll on our first-ever Leap Day. Let’s all work together to make this day one we’ll never forget not even in a million leap years. And that’s equal to 4 million years.“, Steve said. Two Seconds To Detroit started performing My Friends Over You by New Found Glory.

I’m drunk off your kiss
For another night in a row
This is becoming too routine for me
But I did not mean to lead you on

And it’s all right to pretend
That we still talk
It’s just for show, isn’t it
It’s my fault that it fell apart
Just maybe
You need this
And I didn’t, mean to
Lead you on

You were everything I wanted
But I, just can’t finish what I’ve started
There’s no room left here on my back
It was damaged long ago
Though you swear that you are true
I still pick my friends over you
(My friends over you)

Please tell me everything
That you think that I should know
About all the plans you made
When I was nowhere to be found

And it’s all right to forget
That we still talk
It’s just for fun, isn’t it?
It’s my fault that it fell apart
’Cause maybe (’cause maybe)
You need this (you need this)
And I didn’t (and I didn’t)
Mean to
Lead you on

You were everything I wanted
But I just can’t finish what I’ve started
There’s no room left here on my back
It was damaged long ago
Though you swear that you are true
I still pick my friends over you
(My friends over you)

Just maybe, you need this
You need this
And I didn’t, mean to
Lead you on

You were everything I wanted
But I, just can’t finish what I’ve started
There’s no room left here on my back
It was damaged long ago
Though you swear that you are true
I still pick my friends over you

You were everything I wanted (Everything I wanted)
But I just can’t finish what I’ve started
There’s no room left here on my back
It was damaged long ago
Though you swear that you are true
I still pick my friends over you
(My friends over you)

Two Seconds To Detroit stopped performing that song. Then they were about to perform another song. Two Seconds To Detroit started performing Is She Really Going Out With Him? by Sugar Ray.

Pretty women out walking with gorillas down my street
From my window I’m staring while my coffee goes cold
Look over there
(Where?)
There, there’s a lady that I used to know
She’s married now or engaged or something so I’m told

Is she really going out with him?
Is she really gonna take him home tonight?
Is she really going out with him?
’Cause if my eyes don’t deceive me
There’s something going wrong around here, around here

Tonight’s the night when
I go to all the parties down my street
I wash my hair and I kid myself,
I look real smooth
Look over there
(Where?)
Here comes Jeanie with her new boyfriend
They say that looks don’t count for much
And so there goes your proof

Is she really going out with him?
Is she really gonna take him home tonight?
Is she really going out with him?
’Cause if my eyes don’t deceive me
There’s something going wrong around here, Around here

But if looks could kill
There’s a man there who is marked down as dead
’Cause I’ve had my fill
Listen you
Take your hands off her head
I get so mean around the scene
Hey, hey, yah, Hey, hey

Is she really going out with him?
Is she really gonna take him home tonight?
Is she really going out with him?
’Cause if my eyes don’t deceive me
There’s something going wrong around here, Around here

Is she really going out with him?, Around here
Around here, Is she really going out with him?
Is she really going out with him?
Is she really going out with him?
Is she really going out with him?

Two Seconds To Detroit stopped performing that song. Then they were about to perform another song. Two Seconds To Detroit started performing Bodies by Drowning Pool.

Let the bodies hit the floor
Let the bodies hit the floor
Let the bodies hit the floor
Let the bodies hit the floor

Beaten why for
Can’t take much more

Here we go!
Here we go!
Here we go now

One - nothing wrong with me
Two - nothing wrong with me
Three - nothing wrong with me
Four - nothing wrong with me

One - something’s got to give
Two - something’s got to give
Three - something’s got to give now

Let the bodies hit the floor
Let the bodies hit the floor
Let the bodies hit the floor

Let the bodies hit the floor
Let the bodies hit the floor
Let the bodies hit the floor

Now!

Push me again
This is the end

Here we go!
Here we go!
Here we go now

One - nothing wrong with me
Two - nothing wrong with me
Three - nothing wrong with me
Four - nothing wrong with me

One - something’s got to give
Two - something’s got to give
Three - something’s got to give now

Let the bodies hit the floor
Let the bodies hit the floor
Let the bodies hit the floor

Let the bodies hit the floor
Let the bodies hit the floor
Let the bodies hit the floor

Skin against skin blood and bone
You’re all by yourself but you’re not alone
You wanted in and now you’re here
Driven by hate consumed by fear

Let the bodies hit the floor
Let the bodies hit the floor
Let the bodies hit the floor
Let the bodies hit the floor

One - nothing wrong with me
Two - nothing wrong with me
Three - nothing wrong with me
Four - nothing wrong with me

One - something’s got to give
Two - something’s got to give
Three - something’s got to give now

Let the bodies hit the floor
Let the bodies hit the floor
Let the bodies hit the floor

Let the bodies hit the floor
Let the bodies hit the floor
Let the bodies hit the floor

Hey! Go
Hey! Go
Hey! Go
Hey! Go

Two Seconds To Detroit stopped performing that song. “That was totally awesome!“, Brad said. “Yeah, it sure was. And all three of those songs were released from the time this band was formed until now.“, Kevin said.

“2002, 2003, and 2001 to be exact. And within the last four years.“, Steve said. “Leap Day is so awesome. I never want this day to end.“, I said. “And this day just keeps getting better and better. Come on, everyone. Let’s continue doing what we do best.“, Steve said. Two Seconds To Detroit started performing more music.

***

Later that afternoon, Cody and Matthew were near the home phone in the kitchen at Steve’s place. “Okay, here it is, Matthew. The moment we’ve both been waiting for. Our first prank call on a Leap Day. I’ll go ahead and make the first prank phone call since I’m older.“, Cody said. Cody picked up the phone, dialed a random number, and waited for someone to answer the call.

A random elderly man picked up the phone. “Hello?“, the elderly man asked. “Hey, is your refrigerator feeling froggy?“, Cody asked.

“Excuse me?“, the elderly man asked. “Well, you better go catch it before it leaps out the window on Leap Day.“, Cody said. The elderly man shook his head and hung up.

“Alright, now you give it a shot.“, Cody said. Cody handed Matthew the phone. Matthew dialed a random number, called that number, and waited for someone to answer the call.

“Hello?“, a random woman asked. “Hi.“, Matthew said. “Hi, who is this?“, the woman asked.

“Why do you want to know?“, Matthew asked. “Because I want to know why a random kid is calling me.“, the woman said. “Is your refrigerator feeling froggy?“, Matthew asked.

“No.“, the woman said. “Then you better go catch it before it leaps out of a window on Leap Day.“, Matthew said. “Ha, good one. I’m hanging up now.“, the woman said. The woman hung up.

“I think I did pretty good with that prank call.“, Matthew said. “Come on, let’s keep the Leap Day fun going.“, Cody said. Cody got the phone and both brothers continued prank calling random strangers.

It was early in the evening. Two Seconds To Detroit were done performing. Everyone was about to head back home.

“Well, it sure has been a fun Leap Day with you all. Hope we can all do this again next Leap year. Peace.“, Brad said as he held up the peace sign and left. “See ya later everyone. And to everyone who goes to my school, I’ll see you tomorrow.“, Nathan said. Nathan left the basement.

“See you all in March.“, Jessica said. Jessica left the basement. “I’m going to head back upstairs. See you all later.“, Kevin said. Kevin left the basement.

“Well, we sure did have a fun Leap Day today with you guys.“, Amanda said. “Yeah, and being born during a leap year myself, I also approve of this Leap Day.“, Ariana said. “I think you’re the only one out of us four who was born during a leap year.“, I said. “We hope you ladies enjoy the remainder of February.“, Steve said.

“Oh, we definitely will. But there’s just one more thing we both need to take care of before we head back home.“, Ariana said. “If you girls need to use the bathroom, it’s right over there.“, Steve said pointing. “We don’t need to use the bathroom.“, Amanda said.

Amanda and Ariana started kissing me and Steve as their lips were touching our lips. They were enjoying every second of it and so were we. The kissing continued some more. The kissing continued a little while longer. Then all that kissing finally stopped.

“We just had to get our first Leap Day kiss.“, Amanda said. “See you two later.“, Ariana said leaving with a smile and a wink. Amanda and Ariana left the basement of the apartment complex.

“Hey, Jamal?“, Steve asked. “What is it, Steve?“, I asked. “I don’t think I’m gonna be brushing my teeth tonight.“, Steve said smiling. I and Steve started leaving the basement of the apartment complex. Then we started heading back home to end what turned out to be a successful leap day.
