The 80's

It was Saturday, April 17, 2004. It was afternoon. A bunch of people was at Steve’s place where there were a lot of 1980s-themed birthday party decorations.

Cody was looking outside in the living room. “Hey, our Mom is back home from the movie theater.“, Cody said. “Okay, everyone, let’s all get into position!“, Kevin said.

Everyone got into position. Everyone waited for Anna to come through the front door with Kevin Sr. Kevin Sr. and Anna opened the front door.

“Surprise!“, everyone else shouted including me. “What in the world?“, Anna asked as she was looking around. “Happy birthday, sweetheart.“, Kevin Sr. said.

“Wow, thanks, everyone. Gosh, I haven’t had a surprise birthday party since my Sweet Sixteen party which was twenty years ago. Hey, why is this party so eighties-like?“, Anna said. “Because not only did we want to celebrate your 36th birthday, we also wanted to celebrate the 20th anniversary of your Sweet Sixteen as well since most of us know very well how important a girl’s sixteenth birthday is. Or was.“, Kevin said. “That’s why we made this entire birthday party an 80′s-themed birthday party.“, Steve said.

“Happy birthday, Mom.“, Cody said. “Wow, I don’t know what to say except thank you all so much. You all just bought my teenage years back to life.“, Anna said. “You’re very welcome.“, Matthew said.

“Now, it’s 1984 all over again.“, Steve said. “Hey, speaking of 1984, that was the last time the Detroit Tigers won the World Series.“, Kevin said. “Well, it’s still pretty early in the baseball season. Maybe they win it again this year. Who knows?“, Kevin Sr. said.

“So, what was your 16th birthday party like?“, I asked. “Oh, it was wonderful. It was just another typical Sweet Sixteen party. I miss being a teenager so much. But at least I can relive my teenage memories for one day.“, Anna said. “Hey, there you go. That’s the birthday spirit.“, Ariana said.

“So, Steve, where’s the Nintendo Entertainment System?“, Nathan asked. “Yeah, Steve, where’s the Nintendo Entertainment System?“, Brad asked. “Sorry, guys, we didn’t include video games and video game consoles from the 1980s.“, Steve said.

“Well, that sure is a bummer.“, Nathan said. “Hey, at least we can still play on the PS2 and the GameCube.“, Steve said. “Well, what are we all waiting for, let’s get this party started.“, Anna said.

“Yeah, you heard the lady, let’s get this party started.“, Matthew said. Then a male DJ started playing music. All Night Long by Mary Jane Girls started playing. The birthday party officially got started and everyone was having a good time. And All Night Long by Mary Jane Girls was the same first song that was played at Anna’s Sweet Sixteen birthday party back in 1984.

***1984 FLASHBACK***

It was Tuesday, April 17, 1984. It was afternoon. Anna’s older sister was looking outside as Anna was coming back home from school.

“Okay, she’s coming everyone. Get ready.“, the older sister said. Everyone got ready for Anna to arrive. Anna walked in through the front door.

“Surprise!“, everyone else said. “Oh my gosh.“, Anna said smiling. Anna’s older sister walked up to Anna.

“Happy birthday, little sis.“, the older sister said. “Wow, thank you. This party looks so awesome.“, Anna said. “Well, it should be awesome. Besides, it’s your Sweet Sixteen birthday party after all. We wanted to make it really special for you.“, the older sister said. “Well, you sure did not disappoint.“, Anna said.

“And look, we’ve even got a DJ who will be spinning the tunes on your special day.“, the older sister said. “’Sup?“, the male DJ asked. “Well, I wonder what’s next. Is Wham! gonna show up and perform?“, Anna said.

“That would be totally cool, but no.“, the older sister said. “Well, this party is cool enough in my book.“, Anna said. “We’re all glad of your approval. So, now what? It’s your call since you’re the birthday girl today.“, the older sister said.

“Well, I say what are we all waiting for? Let’s get this Sweet Sixteen party started while I’m still sixteen.“, Anna said. “Well, you heard the girl, let’s get this party started.“, the older sister said. Then the DJ started playing music.

All Night Long by Mary Jane Girls started playing. The birthday party officially got started and a majority of the party guests started dancing while others got some punch. Everyone was having a good time as the dancing and the party continued.

***1984 FLASHBACK***

Back in 2004, Angel by Madonna was the current song that was being played thanks to the DJ. Kevin walked up to me and Steve as we were getting ourselves some punch. “Hey, guys.“, Kevin said.

“Oh, hey, Kev.“, Steve said. Steve took a sip of punch. “So, do you two see Stacy or my other girlfriend anywhere around here?“, Kevin asked.

“Nope, we haven’t seen both of them anywhere.“, I said. “Are you sure?“, Kevin asked. “We’re positive. That must mean no one invited them resulting in them not being here.“, Steve said.

“Whew! That sure is a relief. I’m so glad both girlfriends aren’t here unlike the baby shower last month when both girlfriends were present.“, Kevin said. “Hey, speaking of babies, your Mom’s belly sure has gotten huge.“, I said. “Yeah, it’s not long until we all say hello to our new little brother or sister.“, Steve said.

“Well, now that I’m far away from both of my girlfriends, I think I’ll have some punch.“, Kevin said. Kevin got himself some punch. I took a sip of punch.

“Alright, later, dude.“, Steve said. “Yeah, later, dudes.“, Kevin said as he was still getting himself some punch. I and Steve walked away from Kevin. Kevin started drinking some punch while observing the party.

***1984 FLASHBACK***

Back at the 1984 party, Karma Chameleon by Culture Club was playing. A random teenage boy started drinking some punch while observing the party. Meanwhile, Anna was talking with one of her high school female friends.

“Hey, there’s that really cute guy you’ve had a crush on since like forever.“, the friend said. Anna looked at the teenage boy. Anna looked back at her friend.

“Go talk to him.“, the friend said. “Uh, no. Plus, it’s not even like he’d be into me or whatever.“, Anna said. The music and the party continued.

Then the teenage boy started walking towards Anna. “Anna, look, he’s walking this way.“, the friend said. Anna looked and saw the teenage boy walking towards her.

A random teenage girl walked up to the teenage boy. “Hey.“, the girl said smiling. “Hey.“, the boy said smiling.

“So, you wanna dance?“, the girl said smiling. “Yeah, sure.“, the boy said smiling. Then the boy and girl went off and started dancing to the music together.

“Ouch. Well, there goes your future husband.“, Anna’s friend said. “Yeah, but I’m not mad. I’m confident that I will find my future husband someday.“, Anna said. “Well, looks like that someday isn’t today. When and if you get married, how many kids would you want?“, Anna’s friend said.

“I’m not sure yet. Maybe several. I’m also confident that I will become a mother someday.“, Anna said. “Hey, I’ve got to use the restroom real quick. Do you have to use it too?“, Anna’s friend said. “No, you go ahead. I’ll be in this same spot when you get back.“, Anna said. Anna’s friend went ahead and walked away to the restroom. Then the party continued.

***1984 FLASHBACK***

Back at the 2004 party, We Got The Beat by The Go-Go’s started being played. Amanda, Ariana, and Jessica started dancing to that song. And the other guests (myself included) watched the three girls as they were dancing.

See the people walking down the street
Fall in line just watching all their feet
They don’t know where they wanna go
But they’re walking in time

They got the beat
They got the beat
They got the beat, yeah
They got the beat

All the kids just getting out of school
They can’t wait to hang out and be cool
Hang around ’til quarter after 12
That’s when they fall in line

They got the beat
They got the beat
Kids got the beat, yeah
Kids got the beat

Go-go music really makes us dance
Doin’ the pony puts us in a trance
The Watusi just give us a chance
That’s when we fall in line

’Cause we got the beat
We got the beat
We got the beat, yeah
We got it

We got the beat
We got the beat
We got the beat
Everybody get on your feet
We got the beat
We know you can dance to the beat
We got the beat
Jump back, get down
We got the beat
Round and round and round
We got the beat
We got the beat (we got the beat)
We got the beat (we got the beat)
We got the beat (we got the beat)
We got the beat (we got the beat, we got the beat)
We got the beat (we got the beat, we got the beat)
We got the beat

Everyone clapped after the song was over. I and Steve walked up to the three girls. “Hey, that was amazing.“, I said. “How did you three learn how to dance like that?“, Steve asked.

“I don’t know. I guess we were just born to be excellent dancers.“, Ariana said smiling. All three girls walked away. “I’m a terrible dancer, so they could teach me a thing or two.“, I said. I and Steve walked away and the party continued.

***1984 FLASHBACK***

Back at the 1984 party, Flashdance... What A Feeling by Irene Cara started being played. Anna and her older sister started dancing to that song. And the other party guests watched the two girls as they were dancing.

First when there’s nothing
But a slow glowing dream
That your fear seems to hide
Deep inside your mind
All alone I have cried
Silent tears full of pride
In a world made of steel
Made of stone

Well, I hear the music
Close my eyes
Feel the rhythm
Wrap around
Take a hold of my heart

What a feeling
Being’s believing
I can have it all
Now I’m dancing for my life

Take your passion
And make it happen
Pictures come alive
You can dance right through your life

Now I hear the music
Close my eyes
I am rhythm
In a flash
It takes hold of my heart

What a feeling
Being’s believing
I can have it all
Now I’m dancing for my life
Take your passion
And make it happen
Pictures come alive
You can dance right through your life

What a feeling

What a feeling (I am music now)
Being’s believing (I am rhythm now)
Pictures come alive
You can dance right through your life

What a feeling (I can really have it all)
What a feeling (Pictures come alive when I call)
I can have it all (I can really have it all)
Have it all (Pictures come alive when I call)

(Call, call, call, call, what a feeling)
I can have it all (Being’s believing)
Being’s believing (take your passion)
(Make it happen) Make it happen
(What a feeling) What a feeling
(Being’s believing) Heaven
(Take your passion) Heaven

Everyone clapped when the song was over. The teenage boy from earlier walked up to Anna. “Hey, that was truly incredible. Where in the world did you learn how to dance like that?“, the teenage boy said.

“I have no idea. I must’ve been born with a God-given talent or something.“, Anna said smiling. “Well, are you single?“, the boy asked. “Yes. Yes, I am.“, Anna said.

“Cool, so, can we exchange numbers or something?” the boy asked. The teenage girl from earlier walked over to Anna and the boy. “Back off, loser! He’s mine!“, the teenage girl said.

“But I saw him first, so...“, Anna said. “No, I saw him first, so...“, the teenage girl said. “Okay, fine, prove how you saw him before I did.“, Anna said. “I don’t have to prove anything to you. You can’t tell me what to do.“, the teenage girl said.

“Well, it’s my birthday and my birthday party, so I deserve to have him! Therefore, get lost!“, Anna said. “Make me get lost!“, the teenage girl said. Then the older sister quickly got between the two teenage girls.

“Ladies, ladies, ladies! Alright, I think that’s enough of that.“, the older sister said. “Okay, I guess we’ll just have to leave the decision up to him.“, Anna said. “So, who do you want, me or her?“, Anna asked.

“I don’t know. Both of you ladies look so beautiful. Can I get some time to decide?“, the teenage boy said. “No, decide now.“, the teenage girl. “Alright, I pick you.“, the teenage boy said choosing the teenage girl.

“Yes!“, the teenage girl said pumping her fist. “I knew he’d pick me. See ya later, birthday loser.“, the teenage girl said. The teenage boy and the teenage girl walked away.

“Man, what a jerk.“, the older sister said. “Yeah, you don’t have to tell me twice. Well, he had to decide at that exact moment. We should’ve just gave him more time instead. Then maybe he would’ve picked me.“, Anna said disappointedly. “Don’t worry, sis. There is still plenty of fish in the sea. Him not choosing you probably means that you two were never meant to be anyways.“, the older sister said.

The party continued and Anna was disappointed that she still didn’t have a boyfriend. “Hey, I know what might cheer you up. You wanna head over there and grab some pizza?“, the older sister said. “Well, I guess that might cheer me up a little bit, but not completely.“, Anna said.

Anna and her older sister walked away. They both walked to where the pizza was. And the party continued.

***1984 FLASHBACK***

Back at the 2004 party, 867-5309/Jenny by Tommy Tutone was playing and Steve’s cousin (Year One: Episode Seven and Year Two: Episode Ten) was there. “Hey, look who else decided to show up at your party.“, Kevin Sr. said to Anna. Steve’s cousin was standing near Kevin Sr.

“Happy birthday auntie.“, Steve’s cousin said smiling. “Oh, hey, thanks. And thanks for coming.“, Anna said. “I wouldn’t miss it for the world.“, Steve’s cousin said.

Kevin and Steve walked up to the three adults. “Hey, it’s our ‘not a rotten teenage girl anymore’ cousin.“, Kevin said. “Hey.“, Steve said.

“Hey, Kevin. Hey, Steve.“, Steve’s cousin said. “We haven’t seen you since the ball dropped for ’03. How has life been?“, Kevin said. “It’s been great. And I’ve been doing well in college. I’m pretty confident that I’ll graduate and get that degree easily. I’ve just got to keep working hard at it and never give up.“, Steve’s cousin said.

“How old are you now?“, Steve asked. “I’m 20. I also heard about the sweet sixteen thing and the 80s thing. I remember my sweet sixteen party like it was yesterday. I had such a great time back then.“, Steve’s cousin said. “And what do you think about the 80s theme?“, Kevin Sr. asked.

“Oh, I totally think it’s cool having an 80s-themed birthday party. Maybe I’ll have an 80s-themed birthday party when I turn 30.“, Steve’s cousin said. “Mom, Dad, if she’s having an 80s-themed birthday party when she turns 30, I want a 90s-themed birthday party when I turn 15.“, Kevin said. “If he’s getting a 90s-themed birthday party once he turns 15, I want a 90s-themed birthday party when I turn 15.“, Steve said.

“And if we both get 90s-themed birthday parties when we turn 15, the upcoming kid should get a 00s-themed birthday party when he or she turns 15.“, Kevin said. “We’ll both try and keep that in mind once those three days arrive.“, Anna said. “Okay, see ya.“, Steve’s cousin said.

Steve’s cousin walked away and so did Steve’s parents. “Oh, and F.Y.I., I’ll be the one that has the better 90s-themed birthday party.“, Steve said. Steve walked away. “In your dreams.“, Kevin said. Kevin followed Steve.

Later that Saturday, the music stopped playing. Kevin Sr. got behind a microphone. “Okay, can I please have everyone’s attention for just one second?“, Kevin Sr. asked.

Kevin Sr. got everyone’s attention. “It’s about time we celebrate my wife’s birthday even further by focusing on a very popular game show of the 1980s. Jeopardy. However, several guests will play what is known as a pretend version of the game show. Now, let’s go ahead and introduce the host of tonight’s game. Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, here he is. Jamal Weaver.“, Kevin Sr. said. Kevin Sr. stepped away from the microphone. Then I got behind the microphone.

“Thank you, Johnny. And welcome ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls included, to Pretend Jeopardy! where the pretend version of the famous game show will be played to honor the birthday lady herself. Now, let’s meet our three contestants.“, I said. Then imaginary Jeopardy! music started playing. “First, a fifth-grader from Robert Burns Elementary School who is also a good friend of mine, Jess. Second, a fourth-grader from Robert Burns Elementary School who is also my best friend, Steve Sharp. And finally, our not returning champion. A sixth-grader who is a good friend of mine and is Anna’s oldest child. Kevin Sharp Jr.“, I said.

The imaginary Jeopardy! music stopped playing. “Okay, let’s go ahead and start the first round of Jeopardy! which will feature six categories. And those categories are eighties movies, G.I. Joe, eighties music, the mixtape, the walkman, and finally, eighties clothes. Kevin, you’re the oldest contestant, so you get to start us off.“, I said. “Hey, no fair. Why should age determine who gets to go first? Age is nothing but a number to me.“, Jessica said. “Because life isn’t fair, Jess. Okay, Kevin, go ahead and start us off if Blabber Mouth over there can keep her mouth shut.“, I said. Jessica rolled her eyes at me.

“I’ll take eighties music for 200.“, Kevin said. “This TV channel launched in 1981 and would forever change the way we consume music.“, I said. Kevin raised his hand. “What is MTV?“, Kevin asked. “Correct.“, I said.

“Eighties music for 400.“, Kevin said. “This was the top-selling album in 1983.“, I said. Kevin raised his hand. “What is Thriller by Michael Jackson?“, Kevin asked. “Right.“, I said.

“Eighties music for 600.“, Kevin said. “This was the year-end Billboard number one song of 1980.“, I said. Kevin raised his hand. “What is Call Me by Blondie?“, Kevin asked. “Exactly.“, I said.

“Eighties music for 800.“, Kevin said. “And you’ve just hit our first daily double of the evening. Now, how much would you like to wager?“, I said. Kevin was thinking and thinking some more.

“I’ll wager 600.“, Kevin said. “Okay, to get your score up to 1800, here is the clue.“, I said. “This band was one of the 20 best bands of the 1980s.“, I said.

Kevin thought about it for a moment and not too long before time ran out on him to give a response. “Who are The Beastie Boys?“, Kevin asked. “That’s the band. There, now your score is up to 1800 while you still have hold of the lead.“, I said.

“Eighties music for one thousand.“, Kevin said. “Blank just want to have fun.“, I said. Steve quickly raised his hand before the other two contestants.

“What are girls?“, Steve asked. “Exactly. And now that brings your score closer to your brother’s score.“, I said. “Eighties movies for 200.“, Steve said.

“The momentum and the fandom really took shape in the eighties with these two movies.“, I said. Steve raised his hand. “What are Empire Strikes Back and Return of The Jedi?“, Steve asked.

“Good.“, I said. “Eighties movies for 400.“, Steve said. “When it comes to the film industry, the 1980s decade could also be called this.“, I said.

Steve raised his hand. “What is the Spielberg era?“, Steve asked. “Yes.“, I said.

“Eighties movies for 600.“, Steve said. “This 1984 film involved busting ghosts.“, I said. Steve raised his hand.

“What is Ghostbusters?“, Steve asked. “That’s who you gonna call for the correct answer.“, I said. “Eighties movies for 800.“, Steve said.

“This film led to the first PG-13 rating.“, I said. Steve raised his hand. “What is Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom?“, Steve asked.

“Yep.“, I said. “Eighties movies. Last clue.“, Steve said. “This movie trilogy combined great elements of time travel.“, I said.

Jessica quickly raised her hand. “What is Back To The Future?“, Jessica asked. “Right.“, I said.

“Eighties clothes for 200.“, Jessica said. Then the game continued. And the party continued.

***1984 FLASHBACK***

Back at the 1984 party, Too Hot by Kool & The Gang was playing. Anna was sitting on the living room couch talking with some of her friends in the living room. Anna’s older sister walked over to Anna.

“Come on into the dining room, Anna. Mom and Dad are about to bring the cake in so you can make a wish and blow out the candles.“, the older sister said. Anna got up from her seat. “Alright, let’s go.“, Anna said.

Anna and her sister entered the dining room and saw the birthday cake sitting there on the dining room table. A lot of the guests were in the dining room. Anna’s Mom was going to light the four candles which represented the four leap years (sixteen years) she’s been living.

“Why are there only four candles and I’m sixteen?“, Anna asked. “Those candles represent the four leap years that you’ve been alive.“, the older sister said. “Oh, yeah, because I was born on a leap year. Now, I get it.“, Anna said.

The candles were lit. The music stopped being played. And the lights were turned off in the dining room before many people sang the birthday song.

Happy birthday to you
Happy birthday to you

Happy birthday dear Anna
Happy birthday to you

From good friends and true
From old friends and new
May good luck go with you
And happiness too.

“Well, go ahead and put those lungs to work and blow out those candles.“, the older sister said. Anna was about to blow out her candles. “Oh, right, I almost forgot! I have to make a wish first.“, Anna said.

Anna closed her eyes and made her wish. Anna opened her eyes. Anna blew out all four candles. Everyone in the dining room clapped and the rest of the party turned out to be a complete success after that.

***1984 FLASHBACK***

Back at the 2004 party, there was no music to be heard or listened to. Anna was sitting on the couch talking with Steve’s cousin. Steve and Kevin walked over to Anna.

“Hey, Dad is about to bring the birthday cake into the dining room so you can make a wish and blow out the candles.“, Kevin said. “Are you ready to blow out the candles, Mom?“, Steve asked. “I sure am.“, Anna said.

Anna got up from where she was sitting. Moments later, Anna, Kevin, and Steve were in the dining room. The birthday cake was already sitting on the dining room table.

“Hey, why are there only 9 candles on this cake. I thought Mom was turning 36.“, Cody said. “Because Mom is turning 9 leap years old.“, Steve said. Kevin Sr. finished lighting the candles.

Then the light was turned off in the dining room. Everyone in the dining room was about to sing the birthday song. The singing started.

Happy birthday to you
Happy birthday to you

Happy birthday dear Anna
Happy birthday to you

From good friends and true
From old friends and new
May good luck go with you
And happiness too.

“Hey, is it okay with you all if I get some extra time to think about my wish? I forgot to pre-determine what my wish was gonna be.“, Anna said. “Come on, Mom we’re not gonna be waiting here until I turn 36.“, Kevin said. “Okay, okay, fine. I’ll think of something as fast as possible.“, Anna said.

Anna was thinking. And Anna was thinking some more. “Okay, I’ve made my decision.“, Anna said smiling.

Anna blew out all 9 candles. Everyone in the dining room clapped for Anna. Most of the party guests left the dining room as the music resumed and the party continued.

Steve and Kevin walked up to Anna. “So, now that you’re 9 leap years old, what do you think we should do for you on your 10th leap birthday?“, Kevin asked. “We’ll do whatever you want.“, Steve said.

“Well, that’s another 4 years away. I still have plenty of time to make that decision. You four boys along with this little angel inside of me are the best birthday gifts a woman could ever have. Now, let’s not waste any more time discussing my 40th birthday and have some birthday dessert.“, Anna said. “You don’t have to tell me 4 times.“, Steve said. Anna, Kevin, and Steve went ahead and got themselves some birthday dessert. The music and the party continued. And the rest of the party turned out to be a complete success after that.
