Four Babies Plus One More

It was Sunday, November 2, 2003, and it was in the afternoon. At Steve’s place, Kevin Sr. was reading a book while sitting on the living room couch. Anna went ahead and walked into the living room and spoke. “Hey, did you check to make sure all the Halloween decorations are taken down and put away until next year?”

“I sure did. All the decorations are taken care of.”

“Good. I need to sit down for a quick minute. I’m so exhausted.” Anna went ahead and sat down next to Kevin Sr. while looking exhausted. Kevin Sr. closed and set down his book on a nearby end table.

“Why are you exhausted, honey?”

“I couldn’t sleep. That’s why.”

“Well, do you wanna talk about it?”

“I couldn’t sleep because I’ve been thinking about the new baby so much.” “Do you think we will be able to handle five kids?”

“Don’t worry. Everything is gonna be fine. We will be able to take care of a fifth child. We’ve done a pretty good job handling four kids so far.”

“Yeah, I guess you’re right. I’m still pretty nervous though about this baby. And I’ve never felt nervous about having a baby before.”

“Hey, remember when Matthew was ready to come into the world?”

“Of course, I do. I remember it like it was only yesterday.”

Then several flashbacks from the 1990s decade began.

***1998 FLASHBACK***

It was 1998. At Steve’s place, Kevin (five years old) and Steve (three years old) were playing video games on Kevin’s Nintendo 64. Kevin began speaking. “Ha, I beat you again! Eat that, loser!”

“Hey, no fair! You cheated!”

“How did I cheat?!”

“Because I keep losing!”

Then Kevin Sr. went ahead and walked into the living room.

“Kevin keeps cheating!” Steve told his Dad.

“Am not!”

“Are too!”

“Am not!”

“Are too!”

“Are too!”

“Am not!”

“Are too!”

“Are too!”

“Am not!”

“Are too!”

“Guys, please!” Kevin Sr. exclaimed. “Now, I’m pretty sure you can’t cheat in a video game. I mean; besides, they should be designed to not allow players to cheat.”

“See, I told you!” Kevin exclaimed.

Then Anna went ahead and came into the living room.

“Honey, I just came out of the bathroom, and I think I’m about to finally have our baby.”, she told him.

“What?! Are you serious?!” he asked her.

“Why would I joke about something like that?” she asked him.

“Okay, everyone, we’re all heading out!” Kevin Sr. quickly rushed over to the front closet to go ahead and get his shoes. He also got his jacket in case it got too chilly outside. Then Kevin got up and asked a question.

“Where are we going?”

“I’ll explain everything later, little fella. Come on, everyone, we all need to hurry!” Kevin Sr. was quickly getting prepared to drive his wife to a nearby hospital.

***

Moments later, Steve’s family was at the hospital. Steve’s parents were in Anna’s hospital room. Kevin Sr. went ahead and panicked about Matthew’s upcoming birth. Then a male doctor arrived and asked a question. “Okay, Anna, how are you feeling right now?”

“The contractions are several minutes apart.” “Hey, who’s watching the rest of our kids?”

“Oh, don’t worry about that. I asked a security guard to keep a close eye on them in the waiting room. They’re all perfectly fine.”

“Well, that sure is a relief.”

***

In the waiting room, Kevin walked up to the male security guard who was watching them at that time. Then Kevin went ahead and started speaking. “I don’t have any money to get something out of the vending machine.”

“Don’t worry, little fella. This one is on me.”

The security guard went ahead and walked up to the vending machine with Kevin to give Kevin a snack from the vending machine.

“And could you please get something for my little brother as well?”

“Sure thing.” “Is there anything in particular your little brother might prefer?”

“I don’t know.”

The security guard went and got something for Steve and Kevin to enjoy while they both were waiting for their parents to return.

“Thank you.”

“You’re welcome, little man.”

After that conversation ended, Kevin went ahead and walked back over to where he was previously sitting. Then Kevin gave Steve something to snack on after he sat down. Then the flashback ended.

***1998 FLASHBACK***

“Then Matthew was born. And the rest was history.”, Anna spoke with a smile.

“And now this kid over here is gonna claim the title of youngest kid in the family.”

“And whether it’s a boy or a girl, this person will be born on a leap year. And by leap year, I mean next year. I was also born on a leap year. So, that’s certainly one thing I will share in common with our new baby boy or girl.”

“Speaking of leap years, Cody was also born on a leap year.”

“Yeah, I remember that leap year as if it were just yesterday.”

“And of course, we can’t forget about Kevin Jr. He was born on a leap year as well.”

“Hey, remember that time I was about to bring Cody into the world?”

“Oh, I’ll never forget that day.”

Then the flashback went ahead and began.

***1996 FLASHBACK***

It was 1996, and it was in the afternoon. Kevin Sr., Anna, Kevin, and Steve were all at a birthday party. It was a birthday party for Kevin Sr. and Anna’s nephew who turned ten years old that day. Fantasy by Mariah Carey was the song that was playing at that party. And everyone was having a wonderful time. Kevin Sr. went ahead and walked over to the punch bowl and drank some punch. Anna walked over to Kevin Sr. and spoke to him. “Honey, we need to leave. Right now.”

“What? But why so soon? Is something wrong?”

“No, nothing is wrong. But we need to leave. Immediately.”

“So, something is wrong.”

Anna couldn’t get her husband to realize that Cody was ready to be born. She sighed. “Okay, yes, something is wrong! We need to leave! Now!”

“Wait a minute, let me guess. The other kids are getting on your nerves.”

“You’re getting very cold.”, she spoke.

Kevin Sr. thought about it some more. “Oooh, I know!” “Our own kids are getting on your nerves.”

“No, but you sure are starting to get on my nerves.”

“One of our kids is getting on your nerves.”

Anna shook her head to say no.

“Well, then, I give up. Unless one of the kids who aren’t ours is getting on your nerves.”

“No, you knucklehead! We have to leave right now because my water just broke! I’m about to have this baby!”

“What?!” “Why didn’t you just say that in the first place?!”

“I didn’t have to!” she spoke angrily. “I thought that dumb brain of yours would’ve been able to figure it out the moment I said that we need to leave immediately!”

“Alright, alright, calm down. Now, we’re gonna go ahead and rush you to a nearby hospital as soon as possible.”

“But who’s gonna be with Kevin and Steve while we’re gone?!”

“Well, there are other adults at this party. They’ll be fine. Come on, let’s get out of here.”

Then Kevin Sr. and Anna went ahead and tried leaving, but there were so many kids in their way.

“There are so many kids!” Anna exclaimed.

“Okay, hey, out of our way! Excuse us! Pardon us! Out of our way! We’ve got a new kid on the way! Out of our way!” Kevin Sr. exclaimed.

“Okay, we’re making good progress so far. We’re almost at the front door.”, Anna commented.

“Boy, who knew our nephew had so many friends?” Kevin Sr. added.

Then Steve’s parents went ahead and finally made it over to the front door.

“Okay, we’ve finally made it! Now, let’s get out of here!” Kevin Sr. told her. Anna went ahead and nodded in agreement. Then Steve’s parents left the birthday party and were on their way to a nearby hospital.

***1996 FLASHBACK***

“And then we gave birth to another beautiful and handsome baby boy.”, Anna spoke.

“Who is now a second grader.”

“And there were so many kids that day.” “Remind me not to attend any more birthday parties until after the baby is born.”

“Noted. And I’ll try not to be so dumb the next time you try telling me something very important.”

“Thanks, honey.” “And next year, when the baby is born, Steve will become a pre-teen.”

“Yeah, I also remember the day he was born very well.”

“I do too. It was early in the month of June. And it sure was hot outside.”

Then another flashback went ahead and started.

***1994 FLASHBACK***

It was June of 1994, and it was in the evening. Kevin Sr. and Anna were about to have a nice candlelit romantic dinner in the dining room of Steve’s place. Kevin Sr. lit the candles and turned on some music that was appropriate for a romantic dinner. Kevin Sr. went ahead and sat down with Anna. Then Kevin Sr. raised his glass of wine in the air and spoke.

“I say we propose a toast to our second son who will be arriving any minute now. To Steve.”

“To our new baby boy.”, Anna spoke with a smile as the toast was being proposed. Then the toast was proposed. Both parents went ahead and took a sip of what they were drinking and began eating.

“I just love how you set everything up. Nice music, great food, candles.” “Hey, when was the last time we had a romantic dinner together?”

“I don’t recall. But this is so much better than going out to eat.”

“Yeah, I agree with that statement one hundred and ten percent.”

“And I would be such a proud Dad if Kevin and Steve join the army when they both turn eighteen. My father, their grandfather, was also in the United States military.”

“Well, maybe joining the military just might skip a generation.” “Who knows?”

Then after that conversation ended, both parents continued eating. Anna went ahead and noticed something that wasn’t right. And Kevin Sr. began looking at Anna.

“My water just broke! We need to go to the hospital!” she exclaimed.

“Yes! Yes! This is it! This is finally it! We’re both finally gonna have our second baby! Words can not describe how excited I am right now!” he spoke with excitement in his voice.

“Um, excuse me?!”

“Oh, right. Okay, let’s go ahead and drive you to the hospital. Thank God it isn’t in the daytime. Otherwise, we’d be taking you to the hospital in all that intense heat that has been going around lately.”

Anna began yelling angrily. “Are you gonna keep talking or are you gonna help me deliver this kid?!”

“Oh, sorry.” “Okay, let’s roll.”

Then after that conversation ended, Steve’s parents went ahead and quickly started getting ready to head over to the hospital to deliver Steve.

***

Later, it was in the daytime of a different day after Steve was born. Kevin Sr., Anna, Kevin, and Steve all came home from the hospital.

“Well, it feels so great to be back home now that we have a new member added to the family tree.”, Kevin Sr. spoke.

“Look Kevin, you have a new little brother.”, Anna spoke with a smile. “Isn’t that so exciting?” “I want to take a picture of the baby for my parents to see.”

“Yeah, I just gotta find out where I put that camera.”

“I’m sure it’s probably just hiding around here somewhere.”

Then Kevin Sr. went ahead and began looking all over the place for the camera. He looked under the couch, underneath the couch cushions, inside drawers, inside kitchen drawers, and a few other places. Then Anna spoke as she was breaking down in tears. “That’s okay, sweetie. I’ll take the picture later when you find the camera. But what if you never find the camera and Steve’s grandparents miss out on that cute little face of his forever.” And Anna went ahead and completely broke down in tears.

“Woah, woah, woah! Come here!” Then Kevin Sr. went ahead and hugged Anna as she was still crying. “Don’t worry, honey. Everything is gonna be alright.” The hugging stopped.

“No, it’s not! Our baby is gonna graduate college someday and you still won’t be able to find that camera!” “Why would you accidentally misplace a camera before such an important life event?!” Anna still had tears coming down her face as she was speaking.

“You’re just having mood swings. That’s all. The doctor mentioned that it is normal for mothers to get over emotional soon after childbirth. Don’t worry, everything is gonna be fine.”

Anna spoke as tears still came down from her eyes. “Yeah, you’re right. I’m so sorry.” Kevin Sr. went ahead and gave Anna a Kleenex tissue. Anna used the tissue to wipe away some of her tears.

“Now, come on. You don’t want Kevin and Steve to see you like this.”, Kevin Sr. spoke. “Why don’t you relax or take a nap while you’re still on maternity leave?”

“Okay, that’s probably what I’ll do. Thanks for making me feel better, sweetie.” Anna went ahead and kissed Kevin Sr. on the cheek and exited the living room. And after Kevin Sr. saw Anna exit the living room, he began speaking to Steve.

“You and Kevin better join the army.”

Then Kevin Sr. temporarily left the living room, and the flashback was over.

***1994 FLASHBACK***

“And then the mood swings continued for several more weeks after that.”, Kevin Sr. spoke.

“But the mood swings and all the other cons that come with childbirth as a mother were worth it just to experience the joy and happiness of being a mother.”

“I still remember the day little Kevin was born. That was such a long time ago.”

“Well, he is our oldest child. It should feel like such a long time ago. And we were a lot younger back then.”

“And yet I still remember that day like it was only yesterday.”

“Yeah, me too.”

Then another flashback began.

***1992 FLASHBACK***

It was May of 1992, and it was in the evening. Kevin Sr. and Anna were inside a movie theater viewing Lethal Weapon 3. That movie ended when the credits started rolling on the big screen. Then everyone who was watching that film went ahead and started exiting the movie theater.

“Well, that sure was a pretty cool movie.”, Kevin Sr. spoke.

“Yeah, maybe we both can watch it again at home someday when it’s released on VHS.”

Then Steve’s parents were near a couple of public restrooms.

“I’ll be right back. I have to use it.”, Anna spoke. Anna went ahead and walked into the female restroom. And Kevin Sr. walked into the male restroom.

Later, after Kevin Sr. and Anna were done with the male and female public restrooms, Kevin Sr. went ahead and came out of the male restroom. Anna rushed out of the female public restroom.

“My water just broke!” she exclaimed. “This is it! We’re finally having our first kid!”

“Wow, that was good timing as well because at least the baby waited for the movie to end so we didn’t waste our money.” “Come on, we got to get you out of here and into a hospital! A.S.A.P! Let’s go!”

Then Steve’s parents went ahead and quickly rushed towards an exit. Steve’s parents successfully exited the movie theater and were outside the movie theater as a result. Steve’s parents quickly rushed over to their car. Kevin Sr. opened the car door on the passenger side. Anna got into the car on the passenger side. Kevin Sr. closed the car door on the passenger side. Kevin Sr. quickly rushed to the car door on the driver side and opened it. He got inside the car and closed the car door. He put the keys into the ignition. Then Kevin Sr. turned on the radio and All I Want by Toad the Wet Sprocket was the song that went ahead and began playing in the car. After that, the car began being driven away from the movie theater as fast as possible. Then the car was on the way to a nearby hospital as fast as possible before the birth of their first son. Then the flashback went ahead and ended.

***1992 FLASHBACK***

“And I still remember how much you wanted to name him after you after he was born.”, Anna spoke. “Hey, remember that time we both found out that we were finally going to be parents?”

“I sure do. I also still remember how excited we were back then.”

Then another flashback went ahead and started.

***1991 FLASHBACK***

It was Monday, November 11, 1991, and it was I the evening. At the apartment complex, Kevin Sr. was in the living room watching Monday Night Football on ABC (American Broadcasting Company). Anna went ahead and came into the living room before speaking.

“Honey, I’ve got some wonderful news to share with you.”

“Okay, what is it?”

“We’re having a baby!” she exclaimed happily.

“Okay, that’s great to hear. Now, if you don’t mind, I-.” “Wait a minute!” “We’re having a baby?!

“We’re having a baby!” she exclaimed happily.

“We’re having a baby!” he exclaimed happily. Kevin Sr. quickly got up from the couch and hugged Anna. Then that hug ended.

“Yep, I finally get to be a mother for the first time.”, she spoke happily.

“And I finally get to be a father for the first time! This has got to be one of the happiest days of my entire life!” he exclaimed happily.

“Yeah, but what should we name him or her?”

“Well, if it’s a boy, we’ll name him after me. And if it’s a girl, you can be the one to choose a name.”

“Yeah, and if it’s a girl, maybe I’ll name her after my mother or something.” “Who knows?”

“Well, it’s far too early to be thinking about that kind of stuff right now. All that matters now is that we’re finally parents. I hope that this kid is a future Detroit Lions fan.”

“We should celebrate.”

“How?”

“I have no idea. But I’ll probably think of something sooner rather than later.”

“Well, while you’re doing that, you wanna go ahead and watch the rest of Monday Night Football with me?”

“Even though I’m not a football fan, sure.” “Why not?”

Kevin Sr. sat down, and Anna took a seat next to Kevin Sr. Then Steve’s parents began watching the rest of the Monday Night Football game as the football game continued being played.

***1991 FLASHBACK***

“I can still remember how excited we both were when we found out that I was pregnant for the first time.”, Anna spoke.

“And it turns out that Kevin did turn out to be a Lions fan. And so, did Steve.”

“Of course, they did. They both love Lions football just as much as you do. Our boys are so much like mini versions of you. They look like you, they act like you, they walk like you, they talk like you, and they even have the same sense of humor as you.”

“Yeah, well, you know what they say. Like father, like son. Only this time, it’s like father and like multiple sons.”

“We sure did create a beautiful family together.”, Anna spoke with a smile.

“Yep, we sure did.” “Do you still remember the time we first moved here?”

“I do still remember. We had just gotten married and were about to move into our first-ever apartment complex as a married couple.”

Then another flashback went ahead and started.

***1991 FLASHBACK***

It was early March of 1991, and it was early in the afternoon at the apartment complex. Anna was sitting on the living room couch. Kevin Sr. came in through the front door with the last box of stuff. Kevin Sr. closed the front door, locked it, and sat down next to Anna. Kevin Sr. went ahead and began speaking.

“Well, we finally did it. Now, we’re finally living on our own as husband and wife.”

“Yeah, and we sure did pick a nice place to live. Living here is so much better than living in the suburbs in my opinion.”

“And if I had to make a guess, I’d say we’re gonna be staying here for at least ten years.”

“I’d make that guess as well.” “Hey, I think one of the first things we should do as a married couple is have a baby.” “What do you think?”

“But I thought you wanted to wait a year or two first.”

“Yeah, well, I changed my mind. Bringing another life into this world is such a beautiful thing.” “And life is short, so why wait?”

“Well, I guess you do make a great point. Okay, I’m in.”

“Great!” “So, what do we do now?”

“Well, we could watch some TV. But I don’t know what’s on right now. I accidentally misplaced that TV Guide magazine while we were moving.”

Then after Kevin Sr. stopped speaking, Anna went ahead and yawned. “Well, all this moving has got me exhausted. I’m gonna go take a nap.” Then after she stopped talking, Anna exited the living room.

“Okay, honey!” And while you do that, I’m gonna be busy trying to find that magazine!” Kevin Sr. exclaimed. Come on, TV Guide. I know you’re hiding around here somewhere.” Then he looked around trying to find that magazine and he had no luck so far. Then the flashback ended.

***1991 FLASHBACK***

“I think I probably spent the rest of that day trying to find that magazine.”, Kevin Sr. spoke.

“Yeah, that was a pretty cool memory as well. But it wasn’t even as half as nice as the day we got married.”

“Yeah, that day will always hold a special place in my heart.”

Then another flashback went ahead and started.

***1991 FLASHBACK***

It was February 1991, and it was eleven in the morning. Kevin Sr. and Anna’s wedding was about to start. Members of the immediate families and wedding party headed down the aisle and found a seat or took their places on either side of the altar. The first part of the wedding, the processional, began. Then the processional ended with the bride (Anna) making her entrance escorted by her father. The bride’s father “gave her away” to the groom (Kevin Sr.).

Once everyone was in place, the male officiant said a few words of welcome. “Thank you all for bearing witness to the union of Kevin and Anna. These two have known each other for a couple of years as of today and are now going to be united in marriage until death do them part. I wish you two nothing but peace, joy, and happiness on your new journey as husband and wife.” “Now, the responsibilities of marriage are not small. And the vows you two are about to take are sacred and of ultimate importance.” “And now, it’s time for the both of you to exchange vows. But before you two exchange vows, Kevin, and Anna, have you come here freely and without reservation to give yourselves to each other in marriage?”

“I will.”, Kevin Sr. spoke.

“Yes.”, Anna spoke.

“Will you honor each other as man and wife for the rest of your lives?”

“I will.”, he spoke.

“Yes.”, she spoke.

“Will you accept children lovingly from God and bring them up according to the law of Christ and His Church?”

“I will.”, he responded.

“Yes.”, she responded.

“Okay, now, onto the vows.”, the officiant spoke.

“I, Kevin, take you, Anna, to be my wife. I promise to be true to you in good times and in bad, in sickness and in health. I will love and honor you all the\ days of my life.”

“I, Anna, take you, Kevin, to be my husband. I promise to be true to you in good times and in bad, in sickness and in health. I will love you and honor you all the days of my life.”

Then the officiant began speaking again. “Alright, now you will place the rings on each other’s fingers as a symbol of your marriage.” The bride placed the ring on the groom’s ring finger. The groom placed the ring on the bride’s ring finger.

“By the power invested in me and the state of Michigan. I now pronounce you husband and wife. You may kiss the bride.”

Then the marriage was sealed with a kiss and Steve’s parents were officially married.

“We pray that these two have a happy and successful marriage. In Christ’s name, we pray. Amen.” “Everyone, please say hello to the newlywed couple. Kevin Sharp and Anna Sharp.” Then the newlywed couple went ahead and headed back up the aisle as guests cheered for their union and traditional wedding music was playing in the background. Then that flashback went ahead and ended.

***1991 FLASHBACK***

“And then we lived happily ever after.”, Kevin Sr. spoke.

“We sure did. Twelve years, and we’re still going strong.”

Then after all the talking was done between Steve’s Mom and Dad, Steve’s parents began kissing. And they continued kissing. And they continued kissing some more. As Steve’s parents continued kissing, Cody walked into the living room heading for the kitchen to get a glass of water. Cody went ahead and saw his parents kissing. “Ew, gross!” “Don’t you two have a room where you can do that or something?!” Steve’s parents stopped kissing as they saw Cody head into the kitchen. Then after all that, they both smiled and resumed kissing on the living room couch.
