Skipping Freshwoman

It was Saturday, January 22, 2022, and it was evening. Donna went ahead and walked into the lit bedroom she shared with John before speaking.

“I’m afraid that I’ve got some bad news that you’re not gonna like.”

John set down his smartphone before getting up from the bed. “Well, can this bad news that I’m not gonna like wait until after the weekend is over?”

“Sorry, it can’t.”

Then John just went ahead and sighed. “Okay, fine, lay it on me.” “What’s the bad news?”

“It’s about Ashley.”

John just sighed again. “I should’ve known you were gonna say her name.” “What did she do this time?”

“I recently got a phone call from her school. She’s been skipping some of her classes during the past week and that’s causing her grades to drop.”

“She did what?! Skipping school?! When did this start?!”

“It started this past Monday.”

“I can’t believe that girl! That means she’s been skipping school for five school days! What in the world has gotten into her?!”

“I have no idea.” “How do you think we should handle this?”

“I have no idea! Skipping school?! In the ninth grade?! Doesn’t she want to get into college when she turns eighteen?! You know what?! I’m gonna walk into that living room right now and give her a piece of my mind by grounding her until she’s eighteen! Maybe that’ll make her think twice about throwing her future away!”

John was about to leave before Donna got in his way. “Maybe we should think about the best possible way we should handle this situation for a little while. Punishing her may not be the best option right now.”

“Why not?”

“Because if we punish her, she may get mad at us and respond by continuing to skip her classes. And nothing would be solved at all.”

Then John just sighed and sat down on the bed. “Yeah, you’re probably right. The last thing we want to do is make her grades drop even lower.”

Then Donna sat down next to John on the bed. “Instead of punishing her, we could just talk to her first and see whether she’ll decide to stop skipping school or not.”

“And if she refuses?”

“Then we punish her.”

Then John and Donna got up and left the bedroom.

Later, Ashley, Amore, Rebecca, and Lisa were all in the dark living room while watching TV together. Amore’s parents went ahead and walked into the living room. Then, after that, Donna began speaking.

“Ash, I and your father want to talk to you for a quick second.” “Is that okay with you?”

“No, it’s not okay.”, Ashley spoke with a mean attitude. Ashley and her sisters kept watching TV together.

“We want to talk about what’s been going on at school lately.”, Donna added.

“There’s nothing to talk about.”, Ashley spoke again. Ashley and her sisters kept watching TV together.

“Okay, fine, we really want to talk about what’s been going on at school this past week.”, Donna added again.

“And I really don’t want to talk about it.”, Ashley replied. Ashley and her sisters kept watching TV together.

“Let me handle this, Donna.”, John told her. “Ash, we’re gonna talk about what’s been going on at school this past week right now.”

“Ugh! I keep telling you two repeatedly that there’s nothing to talk about! And that includes my home life as well, so leave me alone!” she exclaimed loudly.

“Hey! Don’t take that tone with us, young lady!” Donna exclaimed.

“Your school just informed us that you’ve been skipping some of your classes this past week.”, John informed. “Is that true?”

Then Ashley just sighed. “Yes, it’s true! And why are you bringing this up on a weekend?!”

Donna walked over to the TV and turned the TV off.

“Hey! We were watching that!” Rebecca exclaimed.

“I thought Ashley was the one skipping school.” “What did we do?” Lisa spoke.

“Shut up!” Ashley commanded.

John told her, “We both know very well that it’s a Saturday. However, that’s not what we wanted to talk to you about. You’ve been skipping classes for the past five school days. And your grades have been dropping because of it.” “Do you know just how dumb and foolish that is?”

Donna continued, “Ash, you’re in high school now. That means anything you do from this point until adulthood is really gonna determine whether you get into college or not. You really need to stop skipping school and get your grades back up as quickly as possible.”

Ashley got up. “Why do you two always feel the need to tell me how to run my life?!” Ashley yelled.

“Because you’re not an adult, you really don’t know what’s best for you!” John replied. “And we’re the ones that brought you into this world in the first place!”

“We can’t believe you would do something like this!” Donna resumed. “Do you wanna become a high school dropout, never get into college, and flip burgers at Wendy’s for the rest of your life?!”

“Maybe I do!” Ashley shouted.

“No, you don’t.”, John resumed. “Look, we’re trying our very best to prevent you from failing and repeating the ninth grade all over again. Because we love you too much to let that happen on purpose.”

“Well, if you love me so much, why don’t you just leave me alone about it?! Then I can finally have some peace in this house instead of arguing!” Ashley argued loudly.

“Where in the world has your common sense gone?!” Donna asked angrily. “Do you even want to be a tenth-grader next school year?! It’s already January for crying out loud!”

“I don’t care! I simply do not care at all! Just leave me alone!” Ashley yelled angrily. Then Ashley quickly walked into her bedroom.

“Now, can we start watching TV again?” Lisa asked them.

“I’m so sorry you all had to go through that. I’ll turn the TV back on.”, Joh informed before he went ahead and walked over to the TV and turned the TV back on. Then John just walked back over to Donna.

“Okay, now we punish her.”, Donna told him.

It was Sunday, January 23, 2022, and it was in the evening. Donna was sitting in a chair in the lit living room watching Ashley stand in a corner while Ashley was facing the corner. Then Ashley went ahead and spoke.

“Ugh! This is so dumb! I have absolutely no idea why you’re giving me a timeout like I’m Lisa’s age or something!”

“It’s not dumb. And you’re staying there until you decide not to skip school from now on.” “So, are you still gonna skip school tomorrow?”

“Yes, I am.”

“Well, I guess we’re gonna have to spend more time doing this.”

“This is such a waste of time. There’s no way in heck this is going to make me stop skipping school.”

“We can do this all night if you want to.”

“Why? So, I can pass out from lack of sleep and really miss school?”

“Just say the words, Ash. Just say I will not skip school anymore.”

“You’re only doing this to yourself. You’re gonna learn one way or another that missing out on a lot of school has consequences that you don’t want to deal with.”

Then John just went ahead and walked into the living room. And John spoke. “Are you still doing the corner thing with her?”

“I still am. And she still doesn’t want to stop skipping school.”

“Hey, here’s an idea.” “Why don’t you two just ground me instead?” “I’ll still skip school.”

“Well, I guess you’ll still be in that same corner.”, John told her.

Then Donna got up before speaking. “This is starting to get very exhausting. It’s almost Midnight. And it’s a school night. We don’t want to send her to school tired tomorrow morning.”

“Yes! Finally! It’s about time you two idiots come to your senses!”

“Don’t worry, Donna. We’ll find another way to change her mind about not missing school.”

“There’s absolutely no way you two can change my mind. No way at all. Therefore, I suggest you two quit right now.”

“Alright! I’ve had just about enough of your attitude, young lady! Go to your room and get some rest! This isn’t over!” Donna exclaimed.

Ashley went ahead and left the corner before leaving the living room and walking into her bedroom. Then Donna went ahead and spoke. “How in the world did our firstborn daughter become so rotten?”

“Don’t worry, sweetheart. We’ll find a way to stop her from messing up her education.”

“I hope you’re right. Her education is so important for her future. I believe we can do this.”

“And I think I know someone who can help us out.”, John spoke before the conversation ended.

It was Monday, January 24, 2022, and it was in the evening. Ashley was lying on her bed in her bedroom while listening to heavy metal music as the bedroom was filled with red lighting. As a result, everything in Ashley’s bedroom appeared to be red. Then knocking was heard at Ashley’s bedroom door. Ashley went ahead and took off her headphones, got up, and walked over to the door. Ashley opened the door and saw Amore.

“Hey, Ash. I just wanted to talk about something very important with you. And no, this can’t wait.”

Ashley bent down to turn off the red lighting before standing up and turning on the bedroom light. “Okay, come on in.” Amore went ahead and entered Ashley’s bedroom. Abd Ashley closed the bedroom door. “This better be worth my time.”

“Oh, trust me, it’ll be more than worth your time. Listen, I heard that you’ve been skipping school recently.”

“Yes, that’s correct. And I just skipped a few of my classes today as well. Now, please tell me what that has to do with this conversation.”

“Well, I’m just curious.” “Why do you wanna skip school?”

“The reason behind me wanting to skip school is none of your beeswax.”

“Right. But I still wanna know why you’re doing it.”

“I wanna know why I should explain why I do the things I do to a ten-year-old.”

“I don’t know. Maybe because we’re sisters, we love each other very much, and we should start sharing our secrets with each other.”

“Okay, fine. But before we get started, let’s go ahead and hear some of your secrets first.”

“Um, I’d rather not talk about my secrets first.” “Why don’t we talk about your secrets first?”

“Nah, I think you should go first.”

“But you were born first. Therefore, I think you should go first.”

“Are you trying to convince me to stop skipping classes?”

“Okay, fine! Yes, I am! You have no idea what you’re doing! Missing out on time in school can have very negative consequences on your grades! Think about your permanent record! Do you really want to be known for eternity as the girl who skipped her classes and got a bunch of Es?!”

“And why do you suddenly care about my education? Did Mom and Dad offer to raise your allowance if you successfully change my mind?”

“What?! No!” “Yes.”

“I can’t believe those jerks!”

“But if you stop skipping school, that means your favorite sister gets some extra green to spend on the things she wants and needs instead of just on the things she wants.” “So, are you ready to stop skipping classes for your number one sister?”

“Yeah, no. And you’re not my favorite sister. Get out. Now.”

Ashley was busy escorting Amore out of her bedroom Amore turned around while outside the room. “Wait!” “So, if I’m not your favorite sister, who is?”

“I don’t have a favorite sister. Goodbye.” Ashley closed her bedroom door. Then Ashley went ahead and got back on her bed before putting her headphones back on.

“Dang it! I almost had her convinced!” Amore walked away from the bedroom with no extra money.

It was Tuesday, January 25, 2022, and it was in the daytime. At school, Ashley was hanging out with a few other ninth-grade girls in the restroom. Those girls were all listening to heavy metal music on their headphones. Ashley took off her headphones and went into one of the stalls to use the restroom. Then a female voice was heard through the school’s PA box.

“Ashley Cooper, please step into the school principal’s office. I repeat, Ashley Cooper, please step into the school principal’s office.”

Ashley went ahead and flushed the toilet before leaving the stall. Ashley left the restroom and began walking to the school principal’s office.

Later, Ashley was inside the principal’s office while sitting down in front of the male principal.

“Are you Ashley Cooper?” he asked her.

“Yes, I am.” “What’s this about? Why am I here?” “And this better not take all day.”

“Your parents just called. And they thought it would be best for you to spend some time in detention for a little while.”

“What?! Detention?! But what did I do?!”

“Your parents, along with a few of your teachers, thought it’d be best for you to spend some time in detention until you decide to stop skipping classes for good. I also discovered that you’ve been absent from some of your classes recently.”

“No way! This is so unfair! I didn’t do anything wrong!”

“Are you sure about that?” “Because the last time I checked, skipping school is pretty wrong to me.”

“Okay, so what if I skip a class here and there?” “At least I still attend some of my classes. Plus, it’s not like I’m hurting anyone or anything like that. I just choose not to go to a few classes. That’s all. Therefore, I don’t believe I deserve detention.”

“Look. You can’t just decide to skip a few classes every single school day and think that you’re gonna be in someone’s college in 2025. You must try your very best to attend every single class to have the best possible success and not have a negative attendance rate. Also, you’re still in high school. That means your parents are still required by law to send you to school until you finish twelfth grade. Now, you don’t want your parents to go to jail.” “Do you?”

“I don’t know. Maybe I do want them locked up after trying to run my life once again.”

“And what’s with the negative attitude? Are you like some type of bad girl or something?”

“Uhhhh, duh! Why do you think I’ve been skipping classes in the first place?!”

“Ah, I see. Well, your negative actions are gonna result in you spending a few hours after school in detention every day until the skipping stops. And that’s final.”

“Fine! I’m still skipping school no matter how much detention I get! Therefore, have a nice day! And by nice, I mean the exact opposite!” Ashley got up. Then Ashley went ahead and walked out of the school principal’s office.

Later, it was after school. Ashley went ahead and walked into detention. Ashley set her backpack down on the floor and sat down at a nearby desk. Then an elderly woman who was responsible for keeping an eye on the students spoke to Ashley.

“Young lady, you need to sign the attendance sheet.”

Ashley just shook her head and sighed. Ashley went ahead and got up before walking over to the desk where the old lady was sitting. And Ashley signed the attendance sheet. After that, Ashley went ahead and walked back to her seat and sat back down. Then Ashley continued sitting there without saying a single word to anyone else. And Ashley continued sitting some more.

“Hey.”, a random boy (ninth grade) spoke.

“And what do you want?”

“So, this is my first time being in detention. I just wanted to know what it means to be in detention.” “Do we all have to do some extra work or something that won’t improve our grade?”

“No, we don’t have to do any work. Detention basically means being held in school like a prisoner as a way of being punished.”

Then that conversation ended, and Ashley continued sitting in her seat while being quiet again. Then another random boy went ahead and saw Ashley before speaking. “Hey.”

“You look really, really hot. I mean, you look super-hot.” “Are you single?”

“Taken, sorry.”

Then the boy just went ahead and stopped talking to Ashley. Ashley continued sitting in her seat and being quiet. And Ashley kept sitting in her seat some more. Then Ashley bent down, opened her backpack, and got a bottle of water out of her backpack before opening the cap. She started drinking the water. And she continued drinking the water. And she continued drinking some more water. She set the water down on her desk and continued sitting there and being quiet. And she continued just sitting there some more. Then she was starting to get very bored. She kept sitting in her seat some more while being quiet. And as the boredom grew, she pulled out her smartphone from her pants pocket.

“Um, young lady, no electronics are allowed to be used while in detention.”, the old lady spoke.

Ashley didn’t listen to her and disobeyed by continuing to use her smartphone. As a result, the old lady got up, walked over to Ashley, and took her smartphone from her hand. The old lady walked away from Ashley. And Ashley just went ahead and continued sitting there and being quiet with nothing fun to do at all.

Ashley continued drinking her water and set her water back down on the desk where she was sitting. Then Ashley began talking to herself. “Man, I can’t wait to get out of here.”

“Are you sure you’re taken?”

“Ask me again and I’ll kill you!”

Then the boy decided not to say anything else to Ashley.

Later, it was evening. Ashley was back home in her lit bedroom while lying on her bed. She was on her smartphone. Then knocking was heard at Ashley’s bedroom door. Ashley just ignored the knocking that was clearly heard at the bedroom door. Then more knocking was heard at Ashley’s door. And Ashley kept ignoring the knocking. Then more knocking was heard at Ashley’s bedroom door. And Ashley kept ignoring the noise. Ashley’s parents went ahead and opened Ashley’s bedroom door before walking inside.

“So, did your time in detention teach you a very valuable lesson today?” Donna asked her.

“Actually, it did.”

“And what’s that?” Donna asked Ashley.

“It taught me nothing. That’s what detention taught me. Because that’s basically what I did the entire time. Anywho, no. I’m still not choosing to stop skipping school.” Ashley continued using her smartphone.

John told her, “Well, I’m pretty sure you don’t want to be in detention two days in a row.” “I mean, come on now, isn’t one day of torture enough for you?”

“Both of you being in here and invading my free time is torture. I’m still skipping school. End of discussion.” Ashley just went ahead and continued using her smartphone after she stopped talking.

Then Donna just sighed. “Let’s go. I’ve had just about enough of her negativity for one night. If she wants to fail high school, let her fail. I just don’t care anymore.”, Donna spoke angrily. Donna began exiting the bedroom. Then John began exiting the bedroom after her.

Ashley sighed heavily. “Wait!” Ashley’s parents came back into the bedroom. “Okay, fine, I’ll stop skipping classes! I just can’t stand the thought of spending even more time in detention! So, you both win! There, are you happy now?!”

“Ash, we didn’t win anything. You won by finally acting like a mature adult and choosing to do the right thing.”, Donna complimented.

“I and your mother only want what’s best for you. That’s all. And skipping classes every single day that school is in session is definitely not what’s best for you.”

Donna added, “Plus, you’re still only fourteen. You’ve got so many years ahead of you. And we both don’t want you to just let those precious years go to waste.”

Ashley went ahead and set her smartphone down on her bed and sat on her bed. “Well, now that I think about it, maybe I did cross the line a bit too much. I’m sorry. It’ll never happen again.”

“That’s great to hear. Because you’re going straight back to detention if it does happen again.”, John advised.

“Well, thanks for helping me not become a failure. I guess.”

“You’re very welcome.”, John replied.

Amore went ahead and walked into Ashley’s bedroom. “Dang it! Now, I’m really not getting that extra allowance money!” Amore exited the bedroom in disappointment.

“Hey, speaking of allowance money, do I get a raise in my allowance for deciding not to skip school?” she asked with a smile.

“Sorry, sweetheart, going to school is something kids your age are supposed to do.”, he rejected. “Therefore, no. But you’ll still get a raise in your grades, so at least that’s something.”

Then Ashley’s parents went ahead and left Ashley’s bedroom and closed Ashley’s bedroom door. And Ashley spoke.

“Dang it! Now, I’m really not getting that extra allowance money!” “Dang it! Now, I’m starting to sound like Amore!” She picked up her smartphone. Then she resumed lying on her bed and using her phone again. And after everything that happened, it turned out to be a very happy ending for Ashley Cooper without a raise in her allowance.
