Chapter 1:

Once, in a magical world, and in a far off land, lived a unicorn, and his name was Unicorniolio. He was a bright, silvery white handsome beast. His strong, feathered wings were tucked tightly against his sides and his long, pointed horn was shiny and twisted and turned in mixed colors of white, silver and gold. Unicorniolio went to Unicorn school in the Unicorn village where he studied all things unicorn. Often when he was in school, Unicorniolio would daydream about being able to fly and soar among the clouds. It wasn’t unusual for Unicorniolio to daydream and doodle about a flying adventure. But, one afternoon, without Unicorniolio noticing, his teacher walked behind him in class and saw the picture that Unicorniolio drew. It was a drawing of Unicorniolio flying over his unicorn field. Upset by this, his teacher, Mr. Thunderbottom reached down and grabbed the paper off his desk, right out from under Unicorniolio’s elbow making him lose his balance. His head hit the desk and all the students laughed at him. “Daydreaming of flying again Unicorniolio?” Mr. Thunderbottom barked. His face turning pink and shifting the gaze of his sky blue eyes and long dark eyelashes toward his teacher, “Yes, sir”, replied Unicorniolio reluctantly. “When will you ever learn, unicorns have never flown, do not fly and will never fly in the future! Do you understand me?”

Some of the students in the class were laughing at him, whispering in class and pointing and snickering, making fun of him. After school a unicorn boy in Unicorniolio’s class said to Unicorniolio, “My dad says your dad is a Believer. He says your dad is crazy and Unicorns never flew! He says your whole family is crazy!” Unicorniolio answered angrily, “Don’t you talk about my dad that way. He’s right, Unicorns did once fly!” He is so unicornnoying, so unicornegative, thought Unicorniolio. The other unicorn laughed and said to his bully friends, “Come on guys, let’s go play some unicorn ball and then we can all fly away!!”

The other unicorns laughed and made Unicorniolio sad and feel alone. Unicorniolio looked down at the ground, his head hanging low, and started to walk home when he bumped into another unicorn. “Hey watch it!” When he looked up, he saw the most beautiful unicorn he had ever seen. Embarrassed once again, his face turning rosy red, Unicorniolio said, “I’m sorry, I er, uh, I didn’t see you.”

“It’s OK. Those guys are creeps. What’s your name?” said the female unicorn.

“My name? Oh, my name, it’s Unicorniolio.”

“My name is Unicornelia,” said the pretty Unicorn. “It’s nice to meet you Unicornelia,” said Unicorniolio.

“Nice to meet you too. I just wanted to say, I don’t know for sure if the Unicorns ever flew in the past, and there really is no way to prove it. I guess you just have to believe. But, I think to go through life never believing that unicorns once flew or will ever fly in the future is a kind of a bummer way to look at things. I’d much rather believe that maybe we all will fly some day, or at least did at one time. Oh well, see you around Unicorniolio. It was nice meeting you. I’ve gotta run. Bye!” And with that, Unicorniolio’s heart pounded.
