Chapter Seven: Busted!

The vile piece of shit was following me everywhere. Of course, I wasn’t aware of this. I went to a club one night and danced with one honey all night. I happen to kiss her just once. Hey, don’t judge. She was fine. Jacob was there.

I went to the store to pick up some tilapia, and they were out. However, I happen to run into Dawn. She was still as fine as ever. We chatted for a few moments, and we left together. It was a nice day, so we went and got some ice cream. When I was ready to tell Dawn goodbye, I again put my lips to hers, and Jacob was there.

There was one night I wanted to go to the movies. I called Kay, and she said she didn’t want to go. I didn’t want to go alone. I called Jeffrey, and he was busy with Mel that night. Who should I call? Ah. Sexy Cha Cha. She met me at the theater, and we watched the movie. Afterwards, she pulled me to her and kissed me. I went with it. She was hot! Guess what? Jacob was there.

Of course, I had no idea that he was anywhere around. But really, I wasn’t cheating on Kay. I mean, these were just women I was hanging out with. If they happened to kiss me, well they did. Anyway, Kay would never know.

I was sitting in my living room alone watching television when my phone buzzed. I had received a message. Picking up my phone, I pressed a few buttons, and Jacob appeared on my screen. He seemed to be off somewhere camping or something.

Hello Kay. You asked for proof, you will soon have it. I am going to send you a little video. This will definitely change your mind about Darren. I won’t be back in town for a couple of weeks. I’ll contact you when I get back. I love you. See you soon.

He loves me? I thought. How can he be in love with me? Oh well, no matter. He will never have me again.

I continued to watch television, as one of my favorite shows was running a marathon. Episode after episode I watched, waiting on the video I was promised. When I got it, I was quite surprised. No. Surprised is not the best word. Pissed would be more like it.

I watched as Darren put lips on lips that were not mine. I held back tears and decided to go see him.

Jeffrey and I were at work working on a huge presentation.

I had my back turned to my door when I heard it open. I smelled my girl’s perfume, and I just knew she came to see me to try and talk me away from my work.

Her quiet voice came up from behind me. “Darren?”

“Be right with you babe.” I finished what I was doing and turned around. She was looking pretty hot in her mini skirt and midriff shirt. “Hello, Baby Cakes. What brings you down here?” I walked towards her with my arms out hoping to get close enough to get a kiss. Well, that didn’t happen. She slapped me, and she slapped me hard. “What the hell was that for?” I asked, more surprised than angry.

She pointed her finger in my face. “You know what you did!” she yelled.

I shook my head. I was truly confused. “No babe I don’t.”

She didn’t explain. She yelled at me some more. “I want my belongings from your house today!”

Was she breaking up with me? “But babe why?” I walked closer to her risking getting slapped again. I just wanted to touch her. Maybe she would change her mind. I reached for her.

Kay backed away. “Don’t touch me! I never want to see you again, Darren Smith!”

With that she stormed out of my office and was gone. She left me standing there wondering, “What the hell did I do?” Whatever it was, I had to fix it. “Jeffrey!”

Jeffrey came through my open door dressed to the nines, ready for our presentation. “What’s up man? Was that Kay I heard?”

I nodded. “Yeah. Look I have an emergency. I have to leave.”

Jeffrey crossed his arms in front of him. “Oh no you don’t. You are not going to leave me to run one of your meetings again.”

I took a deep breath. “If I don’t get out of here right now, I’m gonna lose Kay forever.”

“What did you do?”

I shook my head. “I have no idea, but I gotta go after her.”

“No can do,” Jeffrey said shaking his head. “The meeting is in ten minutes, and everyone is already here. She’s gonna have to wait until after the meeting.”

“Come on Jeff give me a break.”

“I understand Dude, but work first. See you in ten.”

I took a deep breath and rubbed my face. What the hell did I do?

I went ahead with my meeting, obviously distracted. All I could think about as I was giving my presentation, was, “What the hell did I do?” I obviously hurt my woman badly enough for her to leave me. I couldn’t remember doing anything. But I was going to go see her to find out.

I went home and gathered all her things just as she asked. I drove as fast as I could to go see her. The whole way there, I was trying to remember what I did. I couldn’t think of a thing. Damn it Kay! What did I do? I stepped up on her porch with her belongings in a bag. I could hear her crying from inside the house. Holy shit! What did I do? I had a key, but I didn’t dare use it. I took a deep breath and rang the doorbell. Hopefully she doesn’t come out swinging, I thought. Moments later her door opened, and she was crying. I couldn’t stand to see her cry. My heart was breaking with every sniffle.

She held back her tears to ask, “Did you bring my stuff?”

I nodded, holding the bag at my side. “Yeah babe.” I held on to it and just stared at her.

“Can I get it?” she asked quietly.

I really screwed up. I wanted to know what I did. “Baby, please don’t cry. I’m sorry. I don’t know what I did, but I’m sorry.”

She opened the screen door and held out her hand. “Darren, give me my things,” she said firmly.

I shook my head. “Not until you tell me what I did. Please?”

Kay let the screen close and she started crying all over again. She moved away from the door, and I took it as an invitation to come in. I opened the door and set her things down. She was standing in the middle of the room with her back to me, still crying.

“Kay, look at me.” She didn’t turn around. “Kay, look at me.” She turned around and she didn’t even bother to stop crying. “Baby please, tell me what I did. I hate to see you hurting like this.”

She walked over to the coffee table and picked up her phone. She pushed a few buttons and then handed it to me. I watched the video Jacob sent her. I was angry, but I was also guilty. Dawn, Cha Cha, and some babe I met one night in the club. I put my lips on these women, but they did not get the goods. My shit was for Kay only. I had to get her to understand that. “Babe, what you see didn’t mean anything. I did not sleep with any of these women.”

Her tears all but dried up. She was angry now. “How do I know that?”

“Don’t you trust me?”

“Once upon a time, I did.”

I had to confess. “Well I may have kissed them, but I didn’t sleep with any of them.”

She crossed her arms and gave me an evil stare, “You are lying to me.”

“No babe, I’m not,” I replied, shaking my head violently.

“Tell me about them.”

“Tell me what you saw in these women that you had to kiss them.”

I wasn’t sure where she was going with this, but I gave her what I that she asked for. “Well, the girl on the dance floor, I danced with her. I walked her to the bathroom and she planted one on me before she went in. I left her at the restroom and went on with my night.”

“Who else did you talk to that night?”

“No one babe, I promise.” That was the truth.

“So, what about the chick at the grocery store?”

“Okay, yes. I flirted with her because I know her. Her name is Dawn and we had something going on before I got serious with you.”

Kay scowled. “Do you want her?”

“No babe. Not at all.”

“Looking at the video, you went to the movies with another girl.”

“Cha Cha. Yes. We went to see the movie you didn’t want to see. I also know her, but she wouldn’t be able to commit because she has a boyfriend.”

“Are you serious?” she yelled.

I quickly backtracked. “Wait, wait. That came out wrong. Cha Cha does her own thing. I hang out with her because she’s cool. I promise babe I don’t want her.”

“Even if you don’t want her, you are just asking for trouble. If she has a man you need to leave her alone.”

I nodded in agreement. “You’re right. You’re right. Cha Cha off the list.”

“Are you kidding me right now? All women off the list.”

I was putting my foot in my mouth every time I opened it. “Yes babe, you are right.”

I had nothing else to say about my guilt. She stood there staring at me holding back more tears when she suddenly yelled, “I waited forever for you, Darren!”

What was I to say to that? “I understand babe.”

She shook her head. “No, I don’t think you do.”

“What do you mean?”

“Do you remember when we first met?” she asked.

Honestly, I couldn’t remember right of the top of my head. She was going to have to remind me. Words flew out of my mouth, because I didn’t want to hurt her anymore. I just said anything. “We met on the beach, right?”

She rolled her eyes and proceeded to tell me the story. “We met on a plane, Darren.”

I got on the plane in Florida bound for LaGuardia, and I was tired. I was glad to be going home. The weeklong conference was rather boring, though I did have a little fun after work. But I missed everything about home, and I couldn’t wait to get back.

I thought about going out with that good-looking lawyer I met a few weeks back. I was going through a bit of a dry spell. I really wanted to be kissed.

I sat in my seat next to the window and watched the men load the plane. Then I heard a low, smooth, velvety voice come from behind me.

“Excuse me. Your stuff is in my seat.”

I turned my head to find one of the most handsome men I had ever seen in my life. Tall, at least six feet two, amazing eyes, dreadlocks pulled back into a tight ponytail, and a great smile. I thought I’d died and gone to heaven. He was a hell of a lot better looking than that lawyer.

I was so caught up in his beauty, he repeated himself. “Your stuff?”

“Oh, sorry,” I said moving my purse and putting it under my seat.

He sat down, putting his bag underneath his seat. Oh my god he smelled so good! I turned to look at him when he sat up, and he caught me looking.

“Hi,” he said with a drop dead gorgeous smile.

“Hi,” I replied like a shy school girl.

There was an awkward silence between us. I didn’t know him, he didn’t know me, but I really wanted to get to know him.

“So where are you headed?” The handsome stranger asked.

“Home. I have been on a weeklong business trip.”

“Really? So have I. Can’t wait to get home.”

I nodded. “Me neither.”

“So, was your business in Miami?”

Again, I nodded. “It was. I hate the heat down here this time of year.”

“Well, I’m from New York. It’s almost as hot up there this time of year.”

I giggled this silly little girl giggle and said, “I know the feeling. I’m from New York too. I can’t wait to get home.”

He looked away from me just for a moment. When he looked back he asked a question, and I was so happy he did.

“Your husband waiting on you to get home?”

I grinned widely. “Oh, I’m not married.”

“Boyfriend then?”

The stranger was fishing. Perhaps he was interested. I giggled again. “No. No boyfriend either.”

This man oozed confidence. “Fantastic. After we land, can I take you out for a drink?”

I was ecstatic. I had never been so excited about a man asking me out in my life. “Sure. What is your name?”

He flashed his extremely white teeth and introduced himself. “Darren. Darren Smith.”

I held out my hand for him to shake it, and I also introduced myself. “Nice to meet you Darren. I’m Kay Jacobs.”

He then did something that I didn’t expect. He pulled my hand to his lips, and gently kissed it. “Nice to meet you as well, Kay.”

I stood there and listened to her story like I wasn’t even there when it happened. As she told the story, I remembered. That’s right. The plane. That was two years ago. Had it really been that long? Now I know why I am so in love with this woman. She has been in my life longer than anyone else. I have to get her to forgive me.

I slowly nodded remembering the night after we got off the plane. “That’s right. I remember now.”

“That’s how long I have been in love with you Darren. I never believed in love at first sight until you. I finally get to be with you, and you do this!” she yelled.

I could only apologize at this point. I had no idea that she had deep feelings for me for so long. Now I knew she was really the one for me.

“Babe I’m sorry. I will never do it again.” I leaned in to give her a kiss, and she pulled away.

“Get away from me! I don’t know where those lips have been.”

She couldn’t be serious. “Babe, come on.”

She pointed her finger in my face and yelled, “I already told you I don’t want to see you again! Get out of my house!”

I didn’t want to leave. “Come on, Kay,” I pleaded.

Her tears started again, and she yelled at me again. “GET OUT!” She meant it.

I tried to talk her down. “I love you.”

“LEAVE DARREN!” she yelled once again, and I sadly walked out of the door. Once I was on the porch, she slammed her front door behind me. I was close to tears myself, when I again heard her sobbing loudly from inside the house. Damn, I really fucked up this time. I wasn’t going to give up on her. I loved her.
