Chapter 1
At the beginning of their marriage, Lilly Louise and Jeffrey would tell jokes to each other day after day. They also found freedom from their suffering by singing to one another at night. This was a freedom that neither one of them ever anticipated. But all of this was before their differences had come between them.
In an excellent photograph, there was a woman who had eyes with pleasing shades of brown. In addition, she wore pearl earrings that her husband gave her on their on wedding day. Her lips were pink, too.
But on this night, tears were coming down Jeffrey’s face. It was a lonely night for him. This lonely night made him cold all over. No blanket in the universe could warm him up like his cherished, estranged Lilly Louise could.
There was no color in his face. His chest was aching. But he was aware in the center of his emotions that he could make everything the way it was between him and his esteemed marriage partner. He was willing to bend down on one knee and stretch out the center of his emotions in his hand for his wife.
He was on the verge of tears again. So badly, Jeffrey wanted to run to Lilly Louise’s apartment, get on his knees, and plead with her until he was out of of breath. He made a tearful phone call.
The sound of Lilly Louise’s voice would be the only thing to brighten Jeffrey’s night. The light from the moon wasn’t enough. Unfortunately, Lilly Louise wasn’t up to answering the phone. Would there be any hope for him?
He had left a dark pink rose on her head cushion. It was always her favorite shade. He was sure that she would change her mind and come home. But she did not. He was left singing a lonely melody.
Jeffrey longed to hold hands with Lilly Louise on the way to breakfast at the local cafe on weekends while they sang Broadway melodies together. In addition, he wanted to go back to the Fridays and Saturdays when they strolled along the beach as one. This lonely Saturday morning was cloudy for Jeffery when it used to be bright blue.
A universe away, Lilly Louise’s heart was breaking, too. When tears started falling down her cheeks, she reached into her purse for a tissue. Instead, she found a photograph that brought back to her mind how she and Jeffrey made love under a purple, scented sky in Paris, France during their honeymoon. She finally picked up the phone to call her husband.
During the next weekend, things were brighter. It seemed like the Supreme Being had created the universe for nobody else but Lilly Louise and Jeffery. They spent their Saturday evening making love while surrounded by candlelight at dusk under a purple-blue canopy. On Sunday, their lips touched on the beach, and the sun bathed them both to sleep.
