- Chapter 38 | Just For A Job?

I was hanging out with some gang members tonight at the gang house when Reece barged into the room.

“What happened?” I asked because he looked like there was a crisis going on or something.

“I saw some of the Martinez gang talking at the bar...” He started saying and I cut him off.

“Why does that concern us?” I ask because I don’t want anything to do with the Martinez family.

“They were talking about you.” He said and that got me curious.

“What did they say?” I asked crossing my arms.

“They were talking about you and some modified recording their boss made... Do you know anything about that?” He asked looking genuinely confused.

Modified recording. When was the last time I heard a recording from them. It took me a minute to remember, but when it finally clicked in my head... It wasn’t good.

“Mother Fucker!” I yelled, talking about Anastasia’s dad.

“What?” Reece yelled back, surprised.

“Ana! Her dad showed me a recording of her saying things like she didn’t love me and she was using me for him. I thought it was real and broke up with her by cheating while she caught me.” I said fast and hearing it out loud made me hate myself so much.

I can’t believe that I did that to her... She didn’t deserve it. She did nothing to me, it was all her dad.

“Dude, do you really think she’d do that to you? She fucking took a bullet for you once! You think she’d risk her life for you, just for a job?!” He yelled at me because he liked Ana as a close friend too.

“I got to see her, drop me off at my house.” I say and he nods as we start running to his car.

He drove me to my house and when we got there, I threw open the door as I began to run up the steps. I was about to open the front door when I saw a letter on the floor that was addressed to me.

Slowly I picked it up and I automatically recognized the handwriting as Anastasia’s. So I ripped the envelope open and started to read.

By the time I finished reading I freaked out because it was already late and only getting later as I stood there. So, I ran back to Reece’s car and told him to speed to the airport. It was already 8:50 and I needed to make it before her plane takes off.

“C’mon! I need to stop her!” I yelled because we aren’t there yet and it’s 8:55.

“I’m going as fast as I can!” He yelled because we were in traffic. It wasn’t his fault, and I knew that but I couldn’t miss her flight.

“Dammit!” I yelled and got out of the car as I just started running through traffic to the airport. I was planning on getting there, one way or another.

Running inside, I saw that it was 9:10. “Fuck no!” I yelled as I ran to a desk.

“Excuse me, has the flight Anastasia Stone is on left yet?” I ask and she looks up at me as she continues to type whatever she was typing.

“I’m sorry sir, but that’s confidential information.” She says and turns back towards her computer screen.

“I need to know now. It’s urgent.” I say, breathing heavily because I’m still out of breath from running here.

“Sir, I already told you...” She began, but stopped when I pulled out a 50 dollar bill and slammed it on the counter.

“I need to know.” I said in a plead and she nodded, taking the cash from me before she eyed something new in the computer.

Glancing at the clock, I knew that I was running out of time.

“I’m sorry sir, but the plane left five minutes ago.” She said with a sad smile and I shook my head in denial, backing away from the desk.

“” I say as I run outside and lean against the wall.

Pulling my phone out of my pocket, I fumble to find Anastasia’s phone number as I hit call. It didn’t even ring once before the automated voice spoke, saying that the number is out of service.

Jogging back inside I go back up to the desk.

“Do you know where her flight went to?” I asked and she nodded.

“She’s heading to New York.” The lady says and I just nod in a thank you as I turn around and walk back outside.

By the time I get out there, Reece pulls up and steps out of his car with a look of worry.

“What happened? Did you find her?” He asks and I shake my head no, sadly.

“No, I was too late.” I said. Sometimes I wish time could stop or rewind.

“I’m sorry man, do you know where she went?” He asked and I sighed.

“Yea. She’s heading to New York. I tried to call her too, but her number is out of service.

“Maybe she’ll be back?” He suggests, but I know how unlikely that is. I hurt her so bad.

“I don’t think so...” I say leaning my back against the wall.

‘I just lost the love of my life because of a stupid mistake. Probably forever...’ I thought as I slid down the wall and cried in my hands for the one that got away.

I love you Anastasia and I won’t ever forget you...
