The next day I woke up and was gutted when I was all alone in the loft. I quietly padded along the floor and made myself a coffee and a couple of pieces of toast. I sat at the kitchen island and ate by myself. “How will I get to school?” I mumbled. Jason usually drove me, I guess I would have to walk or call a cab. I finished getting ready, trying my hardest not to cry. I put my hand in the bowl and pulled out my keys, only to find the Rover key dangling along the mailbox key and the key to my father’s place. “The Rover?” I furrowed my brows. I closed and made sure the door locked behind me before pressing the button to the elevator. As I rode down, I played with the Rover key between my fingers.
“Good morning, Miss Skye” Jeffrey beamed from his desk.
“Good morning, Jeffrey” I smiled. “How are you?”
“Well, thank you. Mr King wanted me to give you this when you came down” handing me an envelope, he smiled and excused himself when the phone rang. I mouthed a thank you and waved goodbye. I decided to try the parkade, if I had the Rover key, I must have the Rover, right? As I walked toward the parkade I ripped open the envelop left for me by Jason. I internally cringed wondering what was written inside. When the Rover came to view I scanned the paper in my hand.
I think it’s best that we all have some time apart. This does not mean in any way that I don’t love you or don’t want to be with you, so please, stop if that’s what in your head or that precious heart of yours.
Please use the Rover in my absence, be careful and drive safe!
I love you,
I wiped my eyes and stuffed the letter in my bag. Time apart? For how long? I got in the Rover and turned the key. The tears wouldn’t relent, so I just let them fall as I drove to school. When I arrived my friends were instantly at my side asking me if I was ok. I sort of told them the truth and said I had a fight with my boyfriend. The boys made me smile when they threatened to beat him up for making me cry and the girls cooed over me making me feel loved. I told them I was ok and it was actually my fault, but I would apologize and make things better when I got home after school. They let me be, but gave me sorrowful smiles every once in a while.
As I sat in class I wondered what I could do to put a smile on their faces once again. What could I do to worm my way back into their hearts and gain their trust?
“The fastest way to a man’s heart is through his stomach” Laura leaned in to me “Make him a romantic dinner, apologize and then have crazy, passionate sex all night long. He’ll forgive you in no time.” she smiled and winked. We both chuckled and Laura leaned back into her chair. She was right, I would make both of their favorite dishes and surprise them when they got home. My spirits were lifted and I was actually looking forward to going home and seeing my two amazing boyfriends.
After my classes I went to the grocery store and picked up the ingredients I needed and some fresh flowers and candles for a romantic dinner for, well, three. I laughed at myself and quickly picked up everything I needed so I could hurry home. When I pulled into my spot, I hopped out and grabbed all the bags from the back. I struggled with the door a bit until Jeffrey came out of nowhere and helped me.
“Miss Skye, this is unnecessary, all you needed to do was come and see me and I would have had someone bring up your bags.”
“Really?” I raised my brows in surprise.
“Yes,” he chuckled “really.”
“Well, I’ll know for next time, I just have to ride the elevator now” I gave him a toothy smile and he chuckled shaking his head.
“As you wish, Miss Skye, let me get the elevator for you” he smiled and pressed the button. While we waited I adjusted the bags in my hand to hold more comfortably. “Big dinner plans tonight, Miss Skye?” he eyed my bags.
“Romantic dinner” I winked and we both laughed.
“Well, I hope it’s a wonderful dinner. Mr King is a lucky man” he held the elevator door open for me while I shuffled in.
“I’m the lucky one” I smiled “Thanks Jeffrey, have a great day”
“You as well, Miss Skye” The elevator doors closed on his smiling face and I leaned on the wall waiting impatiently as it reached our floor. When they opened, I shuffled towards our door and let myself in. Huffing, I dragged the bags to the kitchen and started to prep for dinner.
By six o’ clock, dinner was done, staged on the kitchen table along with fresh flowers and strategically placed scented candles. It looked amazing and I was excited to see their reactions. I quickly took a shower and dressed in a nice pair of dark skinny jeans and a white flowing top. I curled my hair a bit and applied a little bit of make-up.
Now, I just had to wait until they arrived.
And I waited.
And I waited..
And I waited...
It was now eleven o’clock and there was no sign of them. Were they even coming home tonight? I held back my tears and looked at the table of cold food and melted candles. My hunger no longer existed so I spent the next half hour wrapping up the food and throwing out the melted candles and wilting flowers.
I grabbed a piece of paper and a pen, leaving them both a quick note.
Hope you both had a good day. There is food in the fridge if you’re hungry.
I left the note on the island and retired to my room. After washing my face, I threw my hair up in a messy bun and slipped into a tshirt and shorts. I pulled the covers over me and fell asleep with an empty stomach and a broken heart.
