“Of course I do, baby” I cupped his face “I’ve always belonged to you, I always will. But, what do we do now? Josh will be pissed when he finds out, he can do anything Jason. He can take you away from me” I began to panic.
“Shh, it’s alright, my love. I have everything taken care of” he leaned in and captured my lips. “I won’t let anything happen to you, to us.”
“How can you say that?” I pulled away from him. I rubbed my forehead with my fingers, a dull throb was beginning to form.
“Enough, I said I took care of it. Let’s just enjoy our engagement.” He began to walk back to his seat.
“No” I sighed, shaking my head.
“What?” he narrowed his eyes at me in warning.
“No,” I faced him, arms crossed over my chest, the diamond on my engagement ring glistening against the lights. “you don’t get to shrug this off and keep me in the dark. You don’t get to push me around, not anymore. You said you would give me anything I want. That there was nothing I couldn’t have. I want it, I ask for it, I get it. Remember?”
“Baby” he sighed pinching the bridge of his nose.
“No,” I whispered in a sob “you don’t get to push me away. I can’t lose you, I won’t lose you” my voice trembled.
“Oh, baby” I was wrapped in his arms in a moment and I held on for dear life. “I promise you, no one is taking me away from you”
“Don’t make promises you can’t keep, Jason” I pulled away and wiped my tears. “Until you open up to me,” I tugged the ring off my finger “I don’t think we should go forward with the engagement” I held the ring in between my fingers and stretched out my arm to give it to him.
“You have less than a second to put that ring back on your finger, or so help me God, Skye” his eyes were murderous and I shivered at his intensity. I shook my head and grabbed his hand, placing the ring in his palm. “Skye!” he twisted my hand and shoved the ring back on me. “Don’t you ever take this ring off again, do you understand me?” his fingers were wrapped around the back of my neck, a firm grip held me still. “Yes,” I whispered “I understand” He let go of me and turned around, running his fingers through his hair he walked towards the edge of the roof top. I stood there, watching as he took deep breaths. I felt hot tears streak down my cheeks, sniffling, I took a deep breath of my own. I sat down in my chair and looked at what started off as a beautiful dinner and an amazing proposal, turn to anger and tears.
"I love you so much, Jason" I whispered to myself staring at his back while he looked out at the city. He was the one, even though we’ve hurt each other. He was the one, even though he was insane. But let’s face it, so was I. He was my first love, the one who took my virtue, the one who stole my heart. We can be so angry with each other, say hurtful things, but we always end up back in each other’s arms.
I stood from my seat, wiped the tears from eyes and cheeks and walked toward my fiancé. I wound my arms around his waist and rested my cheek against his back. It was only a moment later, that I felt his hands caress mine, lift them and bring them to his chest. “You have always been the one. You have always held my heart, my soul. Without you, I’m nothing. It hurts when you’re away from me. It hurts when you’re mad at me. I love you with every ounce of my being. I want no one but you” I took a deep breath and let it out slowly. “If I ever lost you Jason, I couldn’t go on. I couldn’t live. Not without you, I just can’t” I began to cry. Jason turned around and wrapped his arms around me while I cried against his chest.
“I swear to you, my love, no one is taking me away from you. I promise, I’m not ever leaving your side”
“Josh has too much against you, he’ll take you away from me and you know it” my lip trembled and I clung to his suit jacket.
“Oh baby, no one, especially Josh, will be taking me away from you. Please, trust me” he cupped my face and placed a tender kiss to my lips.
“Just don’t leave me, ok?” my voice trembled.
“Ok” he smiled, wiping my tears.
“I’m sorry I ruined tonight” I looked down.
“You didn’t ruin it” he cupped my face and lifted my gaze. “It’s you and me baby, forever” he winked and I smiled.
It was midnight when we began our drive home. The rest of the night turned out to be surprisingly romantic, Jason didn’t hold back anything.
“Hmm...” he peppered kisses on my fingertips.
“What will I expect when I get home?” I bit my lip.
“Mmm, what did you have in mind, love?” he wiggling his brows mischievously.
“Not that,” I laughed “with Josh” I sighed.
“How many times do I have to tell you? I have everything taken care of. When you get home, things will be a little different, but, don’t let anything bother you. It’s just you and me now” he kissed my palm.
“Please, don’t keep things from me. I need to know what is going on”
“Why? So that you become an accomplice? No, I won’t have it. I’m sorry love, but you can’t know everything, no matter how bad you feel you need to know”
“If I ask you something, will you promise not to get mad?” I bit my lip.
“Not very reassuring when you start off that way,” he sighed “but, yes, I will try not to get mad”
“What will happen with my dad?”
“What do you mean?”
“Jason,” I sighed “he thinks Josh and I are together. If I’m no longer with him, my dad will want me to move back. And let’s not forget, you kidnapped me once, I don’t think he’ll forgive and accept just because I’m in love with you”
“What are you really asking me?” he tilted his head slightly to one side.
“Are you going to hurt my dad?” I spoke firmly.
“Why would I hurt your father? Because he wouldn’t accept me? Accept us? Baby, your father means the world to you, if something were to happen to him, you would be shattered. Why would I want to be the reason behind that. I want you to love me, not hate me”
“But you always threaten me with it” I furrowed my brows.
“That’s all it is; threats. As wrong as threatening you is, I would never go through with it. Besides, I think your father will turn around. Trust in me, in my love for you. Everything will turn out just the way we want it”
“You’re going to threaten him?” I removed my hand from his.
“No,” he sighed heavily “love, your father isn’t who you think he is. Not anymore at least”
“What the hell does that mean?”
“Don’t get upset”
“Don’t get upset? Jason, what the hell is going on?”
“Ease your tone, little one” his voice sharp. “That big contract your father just finished, the one he was telling you and Josh about at dinner. Well, let’s just say dear dad wouldn’t have been able to do it on his own”
“Stop talking in riddles and just spit it out” I spoke between clenched teeth.
“Skye!” he warned.
“Pull over please!” I asked the driver and he looked at Jason through the rear view mirror for confirmation. “Oh Jesus, make him stop, Jason” I looked in his direction.
“Pull over, Gary” he sighed. The second the town car came to a stop, I jumped out. “What are you doing, love?” his voice tender.
“Make me an accomplice, tell me everything”
“No” he shook his head and leaned his back on the car, one foot casually tossed over the other and his arms crossed over his chest.
“Why not?!” I threw my hands in the air.
“It’ll get you in trouble, it’ll get you taken away from me” he spoke the last part under his breath.
“Taken away from you? So what you’re doing could have you taken away from me. Jesus Jason!" I paced the sidewalk “Please, just tell me. I can’t be left in the dark like this. He’s my father!”
Taking a deep sigh, he pushed himself off the car and stalked toward me. Circling his arms around my waist, he held me in place “You’re father is good at what he does, he just doesn’t have the money to back him. He didn’t tell you, but your mother got in touch with him. She said she wanted back in your life and he wouldn’t have it. Told her he would do anything to keep her away from you, so she named her price”
“Why didn’t he tell me? I would have told her I wanted nothing to do with her”
“He knows that, but your mother, she’s friends with bad people, Skye. Just happens, that those people, now work for me”
“What is happening right now?” I shook my head and took a step back. Jason held me firm and I looked up at him, his eyes held something I just couldn’t decipher. “What aren’t you telling me?”
“You know I love you with all my heart, right?”
“And I would do anything for you?”
“You’re scaring me” I whispered.
“Skye,” he swallowed hard “I’m not who I said I was”
“You’re not?” tears began to well in my eyes.
“When your mother said she needed to find herself, it was under the influence of another man”
“I figured as much” I spat.
“He’s not a good man”
“Your mother had him wrapped around her finger, so when she told him she wanted you back in her life, he told her he would make that happen” he looked away for a brief moment and then brought his pained gaze back to mine.
“How was he going to make that happen, Jason?”
"He sent me"
