Chapter 30

I woke up to an empty bed and sighed, throwing my arm over my eyes I cleared my head for the moment.

Why was my life such a cluster fuck?

Slowly, I slid off the bed, a deep groan emitted from within my chest as I dragged my feet out of Jason’s bedroom and into the bathroom. I turned on the shower and took a quick look at myself in the mirror. Dragging one hand through my wild hair and the other over my face, I huffed and turned around. I stripped out of my clothes and walked right under the hot spray of the shower. I let the water pour over my head, I stood still, eyes closed and a steady breath flowed in and out between parted lips. After a few minutes, I ran my fingers through my hair and rotated my neck stretching out the buildup of stress, worry, and if I was being honest with myself, fear. After washing my hair and body I stepped out and brushed my teeth, combed out my hair and applied some lotion and a little bit of makeup. My towel was loosely hung around my chest when I waltzed out and padded toward my room.

Pulling out a pair of black tights and an off the shoulder white tee, I placed them on the bed before digging for some underwear. “Hey, baby” Jason’s husky whisper lulled my ears. I looked over my shoulder and gave him a small smile “Hey” I turned back around and grabbed a black bra and black thong. The towel pooled around my feet when I released my hold of the edges, the groan behind me itched a smirk on my face. Gracefully, I slipped my feet through the thong and gingerly lifted them up my legs, settling the thin, satin straps over my hips. I then looped the straps of my bra over each shoulder and reached behind me to fasten it only for, and as expected, my hands to be gently pushed away and replaced with rough, masculine ones. “Let me,” he kissed between my shoulder blades “I’d hate for your little show to go to waste” I smirked and rested my head on his shoulder. His lips nibbled and kissed along my shoulder as his fingers slowly grazed along my spine. “What show?” I moaned softly “I was just getting dressed” I groaned when his teeth sunk into the skin of my neck. “Mmhmm” he sucked the sting away and clasped my bra. With a tap to my butt he sauntered the few steps to my bed and laid on top. Arms bent and hands resting behind his head, he watched me with hooded eyes.

With a breathy laugh, I swayed my hips toward my laid out clothes and Jason chuckled under his breath. “What?” I asked innocently while I dragged each leg into my leggings sensually. “You’re a naughty girl” he whispered deeply. “Hmm, that’s why you love me” I winked before my head disappeared under my shirt. “Among other things, yes” he smiled. I crawled up the bed and straddled his waist, his hands automatically claimed my hips. “So,” I ran my hands up his toned chest. “What is it, love?” I bit my lip, hating that I was about to ruin a relaxed and playful atmosphere “what’s the plan?” I leaned in and claimed his lips tenderly before sitting up again. Sighing deeply, he closed his eyes and slowly opened them again “Whatever it is will be between Dad and I. I don’t want you getting involved” I pursed my lips and as they parted slowly he cut my words from ever leaving. ”Love" his tone was strong, cold and warning me not to go against him. Of course, I had to “But, baby,” I whined and pouted “it involves me, how can I possibly stay out of it? She wants me, I need to know what’s going on to prepare myself” Jason sat up and nudged me off him as gently as possible. “I said no” he stood up and promptly walked out of the room.

Scurrying onto my feet I bolted out the door and jumped on his back “Why?” Sighing, he stops in his tracks “Because” I scrunched up my face “Really, that’s all I get?” Jason reached around and held my butt with his hands, he began walking toward his room, or rather our room. Pinching my butt, I squealed and my legs unwrapped itself from his waist, he spun around and picked me up, tossing me onto the bed. He crawled on top of me, a sly smirk on his lips. He lowered himself on top of me, his chest trapping me beneath him. “Because I love you. You’re my world and I would have no reason to live if I ever lost you. That’s why I don’t want you involved” he leaned in and softly pressed his lips to mine “Is that a better answer?” I nodded and sunk my fingers into his hair “It’s a wonderful answer and I love you for it” Jason eyed me suspiciously “But?” he raised a brow knowing full well that, that wasn’t the end of it. “But,” I began and he sighed nuzzling his face in my neck “it would be wise to let me know what’s happening. It’s my life at stake here” I rubbed his back soothingly, hoping he would just give in. “That’s where you’re mistaken,” he lifted himself up to look my in the eyes, “you belong to me, which means this life,” he pressed his hand against the middle of my chest “is mine. It’s my life that’s at stake here and I will do everything in my power to keep it safe. Understood?” I nodded and let out a whispered, yes. “Good. Now come eat breakfast” Before removing himself he gave me a firm kiss. Offering me his hand I took it and shuffled out of the room like a scolded child.

“Stop pouting, love” he tried to hide his chuckle but I caught it. The ends of my lips began to curl and I coughed to shake them away. “I’m not pouting” I nearly stomped my foot when he pulled a chair for me to sit on. “Right...” he drawled rolling his eyes. “Here, eat” He placed an omelette in front of me and began to pour me coffee. “Thank you” I gave him a small smile. “You’re welcome, glad the pout is gone” I scowled “Never mind.” He sighed pouring himself a cup. There was silence in the kitchen while I ate and Jason stared at me. I refused to break first. “Fine” he groans in defeat. Squealing, I jump off my chair and run around the island. Jumping into his arms he chuckled as I slammed my lips to his.

“Oh look, the pout is gone” he raised a brow holding my legs around his waist “Funny how that works when you give into me, huh?” I shrugged and peppered kisses all over his face. “Ok, ok” he patted my bum and I released my hold on him. “Finish up, then we go see Dad”

“Oh god” I groaned and Jason chuckled.

My heart was pounding in my chest the closer we got to my childhood home. It’s been forever since I’ve been here and I was excited but I was also petrified for the reason behind my visit. My dad was going to kill me. Jason eased the Rover up the driveway and put it in park “Ready?” I opened my mouth to answer when the front door opened and produced a very angry looking papa bear. Our eyes locked and I swallowed hard “No” I squeaked and sunk lower in my chair. “C’mon, I’ll protect you” he chuckled exiting from the Rover and walking around to open my door. “Come, my love” he extended his hand and I took it. My father and I didn’t break our eye contact through the whole exchange. Jason and I walked slowly, hand in hand, towards my father. He finally broke eye contact to look at our intertwined hands, he scowled then looked back up at me “I see where you get that look from now” Jason jokingly whispered and I bumped my shoulder against him.

“Hi, Daddy” I whispered.

“My little girl” choking on his words he opened his arms and I didn’t hesitate. Releasing my hand from Jason’s, I flung myself into my father’s arms and held on tight. We stood there silently, holding each other while silent tears fell from both our eyes. “I’m so sorry” I held on tighter. Dad pulled away slightly and cupped my face, flicking my tears away with the pads of his thumbs. “None of that, sweetheart, come inside; you too” he tossed over his shoulder.

“Thank you, sir” Jason chuckled through a smile. I smiled at him, thankful he didn’t take offence to my Dad’s brash behavior towards him.

“Are you hungry? Thirsty? Can I get you anything?” Dad smoothed back my hair.

“No,” I shook my head slightly “I’m ok, thanks” I looked over at Jason knowing my Dad wouldn’t ask him “Would you like anything, Jason?” he only shook his head with a small smile and mouthed, No, thank you, love. “Dad, we should really discuss what’s been happening” with a huff he nods and gestures us into the kitchen. Dad pulled out a chair for me, I gave him a thank you and he took the seat next to me, Jason sat down across the table.

“Did anyone see who dropped off the letter?” he looked at me with a pained expression.

“I think that question should be directed at Jason, he’s the one that’s been taking care of the situation; and me” giving me a single nod he looks towards Jason.

“Well?” he eyed Jason with dominance. “Did you find anything out?”

“Not yet, sir, but I will. I have my best guys digging for answers and keeping a low profile while they do it, I don’t want to tip them off” dad only grunts as a response and I fight the urge to roll my eyes.

“About the loan,” Dad slightly flinched “I have every intention of paying you back. I don’t like owing anyone money” he cleared his throat and reached out for my hand. “I’m not too happy about you telling my daughter my personal affairs”

“I didn’t exactly have a choice, sir. We both know how tenacious Skye can be” he smirked and winked in my direction. I rolled my eyes and pulled a face making him smile. “And, it wasn’t a loan, it was a son helping his father” they stared at each other for a moment. I for one was shocked at Jason’s words. It didn’t escape me that he didn’t say your dad when we spoke of him. He simply would say dad. To me it showed respect and love, it was sweet to hear. Dad stood up abruptly and snickers “A son helping his father? You’re no son to me” he narrowed his eyes. “Dad!” I stood and eyed him with warning. I meant to speak again but Jason rose his hand up in a gesture for me not to, I pursed my lips and crossed my arms over my chest. “Don’t think I have forgotten what you did to my daughter only a year ago. You beat her, forced her to stay with you in that cabin, forced her to do who knows what else!” his face was red with rage and the vein in his temple began to pulsate. “Clearly you brainwashed my child into thinking you care and love her. To think she agreed to marrying a monster like you is beyond me!” I reflexively cover my ring to protect it as his words stung deep in my chest. “Let me make it clear to the both of you, I do not, nor will I ever, accept this relationship. I will get my ex-wife to back off and then, I’m taking my daughter back” Dad’s chest was heaving as he stared both Jason and I down. His words weren’t threats, they were promises.

“I’m sorry you feel that way, I wish the situation was different, I really do, but please know that Skye has a choice to stay or go.” Jason spoke softly but with confidence.

“Does she really?” Dad asked sarcastically while quirking a brow.

“Yes, she does. Skye knows that” he looked my way and my feet twitched to run to him and hold him. “I have been blessed that after all that I have put her through, she still stands by my side, she still has a place in her heart for me. Like I told Skye, I will tell you, I will spend the rest of my life proving to you how I’m the perfect person for your daughter. She will always come first and I will lay down and die to keep her safe” As Jason spoke his voice became more dominant “Sir, let us get through this hurdle first, then we can discuss mine and Skye’s future together. Fair?”

“Yeah, sure, whatever” Dad waved a hand in the air dismissively while the other pushed back his salt and pepper hair.

“Do you have a plan in mind? Jason sat more comfortably in his chair now that he wasn’t being verbally attacked by my father.

“I thought about calling your mother, ” I rolled my eyes and he sighed “and telling her the truth about how Skye feels. Tell her that you don’t want to meet her, you don’t want her apart of your life. She’ll just have to respect your wishes. I should have done that from the beginning Skye, I’m sorry I didn’t” he sat down and a look of defeat crossed his tired features. I sat down next to him and took his hand in mine.

“No one is at fault here. You were doing what you thought was right to protect me” I gave him a smile and he returned it with a sad one. “Your plan is fine but it’s flawed. If you tell her to stay away because that’s my choice, she’ll just counter it with wanting to hear it from me. At the end of the day, I’ll have to face her” Jason grunted and begrudgingly agreed.

“I hate to be the one to ask this but, how far are the both of you willing to take this to make her stop pursuing Skye?” Jason eyed the both of us warily.

“What are you asking exactly?” My Dad narrowed his eyes at Jason and I held my breath. I knew what Jason was asking and I knew my answer, I just wasn’t sure if my Dad would be able to handle it. I feared he would look at me differently.

“Sir, I know the man she is with and he’s capable of anything”

“Spit it out!” Dad snaps.

“Dad!” I scold.

Jason stood to his full, domineering and intimidating height “Without sounding like the bad guy here-”

“You are the bad guy” Dad pushes his chair back and stands challengingly in front of Jason. My father wasn’t small by any means but Jason’s large frame seemed to dwarf him. It didn’t stop him from puffing out his chest and standing toe to toe with my fiancé.

“Are you willing to get blood on your hands, dad?” I asked.

“What?” he blinks at me.

Standing along with them, I pose my question again with confidence and purpose “Are you willing to get blood on your hands? Because I am. I’m willing to spill the blood of that vile woman who thought she could ruin our lives by leaving, only to come back for who knows what. I will fight for my freedom because I want absolutely nothing to do with her. My mother died the day she walked out that door without a single glance at what she was leaving behind. As of this moment, her death was how I felt about her. If need be, I’ll make it a reality”

In that moment Skye’s father knew he lost his daughter to the darkness. In that moment he knew he would do anything to bring her back to the light. He wouldn’t let these monsters consume his little girl, at any cost.
