“What is this nonsense, Skye?” My father bellowed. His anger bloomed crimson on his face.
“I’m sorry, Dad, but I meant every word. I won’t let her ruin what we have built together. She won’t take me away from either of you” I looked between the two men who held such importance in my life.
“What have you done to my daughter?” He seethes, his sharp, accusing eyes directed at Jason.
“He’s done nothing but help me realize the truth behind the lies around me. If it wasn’t for Jason, they would have taken you away from me because of the debt you owed those people” I tried so hard to keep the edge out of my voice. I knew that my father was only trying to protect me, the thing was, he was protecting me against the wrong person.
“I would have paid them back” he grumbles.
“No, you wouldn’t have,” I shook my head sadly “Because mother and her boyfriend got in touch with those people and cut them a deal. If Jason didn’t keep an eye on you and your safety they would have killed you” I felt a deep pang in my chest. It hurt to think that the person who didn’t even want me was willing to take away the one person who stood by my side and provided for me. I hated her for what she was doing and I was determined to rid her from our lives. My father seemed thoughtful for a moment before he looked at Jason. I knew what my dad was thinking, rather hoping. He hoped I was lying, that my mother wasn’t trying to kill him so she could have me to herself. He hoped that the monster didn’t turn out to be the hero. Jason watched my father for a moment, with assurance he spoke “Whatever it takes to keep you two safe, I’ll do it” his eyes showed his honest, raw emotion. Clearly, the emotion was too heavy for my father to bear, he averted his eyes and looked down at the floor.
“I understand why this situation puts fear into your heart,” I spoke softly and my dad looked up at me with pure worry in his eyes “but this won’t change me, I swear it. I’ll always be your little girl” I give him a small, sad smile.
“That’s the thing my sweet girl, if this goes bad, it’ll change you. Then I’ll really lose you”
“Never, dad. You’ll never lose me” I whispered and pulled him into a tight hug. “I will always be your little girl, I will always be a phone call away. You will never lose me”
“We’ll try to end this like adults. We’ll tell her Skye doesn’t want her in her life anymore” Jason tries to smooth out the apprehension weighing heavily in the room.
“But if she doesn’t back down, we need to agree on the next step. We can’t hesitate and most importantly, we have to agree. We all need to be on the same page cause if it comes down to it, there’s no backing down” I pull away and look at my dad. His eyes held such sadness it was breaking my heart “Dad, let Jason and I deal with this. I won’t be able to handle it if you look at me differently after all of this” he shakes his head “I would never see you any way but as my daughter, my little girl, my princess” he cups my face and kisses my forehead. “Promise me, dad, promise me that if this goes south and we do what we have to, you won’t turn your back on me”
“I will never turn my back on you” his face turned stern and his eyes held my attention. “I’m the father, you’re the children” he looked between the two of us. “I’ll deal with her, not you two. What kind of father would I be if I let my children get blood on their hands”
“Sir, I’ve met her and she’s manipulative, crafty. I don’t want her confusing you by making you think she was once the girl you fell in love with”
“Do you take me for an old fool?” my dad counters.
“No, sir” Jason shakes his head.
“Good. Pick the place, I’ll call her and set up a date a week from now. Let the witch try to take my baby from me. You belong to me"
Dad left in a huff, most likely to cool down. Jason and I sat in our seats quietly, both of us seeming to be in our own thoughts. I for one was afraid that my father would look at me differently once this all goes south, and I was confident it would. My mother seems to be quite persistent in not just wanting to see me, but wanting me back in her sole custody. My heart began to hammer in my chest out of pure anguish and anger. How could she? After all these years, why now? And the lengths she’s willing to go to achieve her goal was sickening. I was hurting; bad.
“What’s going on in that beautiful mind of yours?” Jason whispered. Closing my eyes, I took a shaky breath “I just don’t want him to look at me like some sort of monster after all of this. I can’t lose my dad” I shook my head, while my eyes were squeezed tight. Jason was at my side in an instant, he took my hands and pulled me onto my feet. Wrapping my arms around his waist, he covered my body with his large arms, caging me against his warm, protective chest. “I won’t let him take this burden. When the time comes, I’ll take care of it” he kisses the top of her head. I rest my chin on his chest and look up at his beautiful face “But it’s not your burden to bare. If anything, it’s mine.” ” he shakes his head “It’s my job to shield you from all of this, trust me when I say I’ll take care of it” he leans in and gently kisses my lips, for a moment I’m lost in the tenderness. “I’m so incredibly in love with you” I whisper against his lips, smiling. “I’ll never get tired of hearing that” he smiles into our kiss before claiming them once again. Pulling away, his hazel eyes follow the movements of his fingers as they tuck a stand of my hair behind my ear. His expression becomes one of thoughtfulness, worry and even hesitation. “What is it? What’s wrong?” I cup his face.
Sighing, he licks his plump lips and looks deep into my eyes “Marry me”
I chuckle and let my hands run down his neck and settle on his chest “I already said yes, you crazy person” I flash my ring smiling.
“No,” he smiles shaking his head and squeezing my hips “Officially. Let’s make it legal right now”
My brows meet in the middle with confusion “You want to plan a wedding right now? Can we handle the issue with my demon of a mother first? I chuckle awkwardly and push away from him slightly.
I could see Jason swallow hard and his hold on me becomes tighter, almost as if he’s afraid I would run away “Let’s just go to the courthouse and make it official. We can plan the wedding of your dreams whenever you want”
“Do you not want to marry me? Have you changed your mind?” His eyes widen with panic.
“Jason! Of course I want to marry you. I want to spend the rest of my life with you. But why all of a sudden are you asking to get married? What are you hiding from me?” I narrow my eyes.
“Nothing, I promise. I just need to know you’re mine” his fingers clutch the material of my shirt and he pulls me in even closer.
“I am yours; always” I run my hands slowly, up and down his chest.
“Then let’s got to the Courthouse. I want nothing more than to make you Mrs Skye King” he whispers, resting his forehead on mine.
I shake my head. All I wanted from the moment I first met him was to be his and only his. But, something was off and it worried me to the core “You’re hiding something and I want to know what it is. You promised to tell me everything, Jason” I practically begged.
“Love,” he sighs “I just need to make you mine. I don’t know any other way to explain it to you”
“Who do you need to show that I belong to you?” I raised a brow.
Clenching his jaw, he looked away for a moment before bringing his fiery gaze back to me “Your mother, my father and,” his shoulders slumped and he sighed in defeat “Dad”
“Are you afraid that after this is all over, he’ll try to take me away from you?”
He only nods and rests his forehead on mine, his arms circle around me securely “I can’t lose you, Skye. You’re my everything”
“There’s no other reason why you’re rushing this?” I sink my finger in his hair.
“No, I swear” his hazel eyes twinkle as they look into mine. His expression is soft, almost childlike.
“Ok then,” I smile. He leans back slightly and his hopeful eyes dart between mine “let’s get married”
