Chapter 14

I looked at my phone and realized that the movie Layla was watching was about to be over. I hugged Eric tightly and told him to text me later. I ran off and headed towards the movie theater.

I got there just in time for the credits to start rolling as I waited for Layla outside of the theater. Couple after couple came out and I was starting to wonder where the heck Layla was. My mom was going to be here any minute, so I went inside of the theater to look for her.

I walked inside and tried to focus my eyes, as the lights had not come back on yet. I went up and down isle after isle, calling for Layla until I finally reached the very last row of seats. I saw two people sucking face and I knew I recognized the shoes, because they were my black pair of vans.

“Ahem.” I coughed out casually with a smirk.

Startled, the pair instantly pulled away from each other. “Oh! Um, hey! This is Jake!” Layla smiled as she tried to hold in her laughter.

I rolled my eyes, but then grinned. “Hello Jake.”

“Uh, hey.” He eventually said. You could tell he was a little embarrassed.

“Jake, this is my best friend Cecilia. I’m so sorry, but we have to go. Our ride is here.” She gave him a small peck on the cheek and told him to call her. He smiled and nodded his head as I grabbed Layla by the arm, pulling her with me towards the exit.

“Man, you weren’t kidding when you said you would be on a date too.” I laughed and she slapped my arm playfully.

“Shut up, would ya? He’s cute huh?” I nodded and we both walked outside where my mom was already waiting.

“So, how was the movie girls?” My mom shot me a playful grin and I knew that she knew I was never watching any movie.

Layla and I answered, “Great!“, in unison as all three of us started laughing.

I felt my phone vibrate so I pulled it out of my pocket.

Daines: Already miss u.

Ugh, why does he make me feel things?

Me: I miss u too.

“And who might you be texting?” I could feel Layla burning a hole through the back of my head with her eyes, so I quickly put my phone back down onto my lap.

“Oh, no one.” I looked out of the window casually, but I could hear her mumble in the backseat.

I laughed and rolled the window down so I could feel the cool wind blow against my face and through my hair.

All I could think about was Eric. I finally had my first kiss! Yes, that’s right, Cecilia Collins had her first kiss by the guy of her dreams, and I nearly broke his nose in the process.

As we swayed to the beautiful melody, our eyes were fixated on each other. I was actually more so staring through him rather than at him, because I was so focused on my feet. I wasn’t going to trip or fall or do anything that could potentially ruin this moment.

I finally let the music take us away, and just as the next song started playing, he stopped.

“What’s wrong?” I asked with worry immediately entering my brain.

“I uh... I need to ask you something.”

“What is it?” My mind was now running in circles.

“It’s something important...” He looked so nervous, and I couldn’t tell whether I should start freaking out or if I should just play it cool.

That was when he got down on one knee.

Okay, I’m totally kidding!

He grabbed me by the hand and brought me over toward the lights that were twinkling against the bushes. His face beamed with joy as the lights radiated off his face perfectly. He stepped closer to me and I could feel his unsteady breathing against my face. I gave him a reassuring squeeze of the hand and smiled. He smiled back, his eyes not leaving mine.

“Eric... ask me already.” I was surprised at my own words. I was never the pushy one.

“Will... you be my girlfriend?” The words finally left his mouth and it was almost as if I heard each word crystal clear, but in slow motion. I tried to gather my thoughts and I could feel myself becoming nervous. I took a step back and he looked confused, then he realized that I might need some air.

He went to take a step back himself, but before he could I quickly pulled him in with my hand around his neck, and just as I was about to kiss the life out of him, I realized I pulled him too hard because we banged faces together as he tripped over a rock. We sat there in complete shock. Him, because he couldn’t believe that I attempted to make the first move. I, because I couldn’t believe that I almost killed him while doing so.

After apologizing a million and one times, he laughed and gently pressed me into his chest. He slowly moved my hair away from my eyes and moved his face closer to mine.

“Be still...” He breathed out nervously, and then it was as if someone let off a thousand fireworks all at once. Emotions exploded within me as time seemed to be at a stand-still.

We kissed for what seemed like forever, though it only lasted a couple of minutes. His lips were perfect and they matched mine in a way that made me completely fall head over heels right then and there. I knew that no guy was ever going to kiss me the way that Eric Daines had.

We finally pulled away to catch our breaths and I completely melted in his arms. The music was still going so we slowly started swaying again, him holding me close.

“I take that as a yes, Collins?” I could feel his smile against my neck, as I smiled into his.

“Absolutely.”

| End of Flashback |

I was yanked away from my thoughts as the car came to a fast stop. Thank you random, crazy driver for almost causing an accident. We were a block away from home and my mom was asking us about the movie we ‘saw’.

Of course, Layla was answering all of the questions and I was just nodding my head in agreement, though I had no idea what she was talking about. We kept grinning to each other every time my mom would bring her attention back to the road, even though I knew that my mom already knew the truth.

We finally made it home and my mom decided that she was too tired to stay up playing games, so she went to bed.

I was a little relieved because all I wanted to do was tell Layla about my night.

We sat up in my room all night, eating snacks and watching movies. I told her everything that happened during my special date with Eric and she beamed at me the entire time. I thanked her for playing a part in it and I told her how I kissed him, or rather, how I attempted to kiss him but he ended up saving the night.

“You what?” She yelled, almost too loudly.

“Yes. Me, little ol’ Cecilia made the first move, well I tried to anyway.” We laughed as she gave me a playful high five.

“I knew you had it in you, girl! Confidence is always key.”

“Oh, shut up.” I lightly punched her arm and before we knew it, we were passed out on opposite ends of my bed.

We woke up the next morning to the smell of pancakes and we immediately retreated into the kitchen. I was in complete shock when I saw who was cooking.

“What the hell are you doing here?” Layla said with a huge grin as her step-brother turned around, almost surprised by our sudden presence.

“Oh, good morning ladies!” He said with a sly smile and pointed to the two plates already made sitting on the kitchen table.

“Please, enjoy some breakfast.”

I quickly looked down at my appearance and darted for the bathroom. I threw some water on my face and tried to wash away the sleepiness. I brushed my teeth twice and pulled my hair up in a high ponytail, trying to contain the beast that it was.

I went into my room quietly and put on some sweat pants over my very short shorts. Then, I pulled out my bra quickly putting it on under my tank top.

I took a deep breath and walked back into the kitchen where Layla, Eric, Brody and my mom were all sitting and now staring at me.

“Oh, um... hey.” I looked down at my feet and bit my lip.

Everyone laughed as I walked over to the table, sitting down in between Eric and Layla.

“So, now that you’re all dolled up for breakfast, why don’t you tell us about the wonderful night you had?” My mom was always trying to embarrass me somehow. Sometimes she would do it without even trying, but boy was she trying today.

“Oh, ya know, the movie was great!” I said sarcastically.

She shot me a grin and then Brody got up, taking his now empty plate over to the sink.

“Listen Eric, just so you know, that’s my sister. Treat her good.”

Brody was anything but intimidating. Eric politely smiled and nodded his head, signaling that he fully understood.

That was the first, almost sincere, thing I had heard Brody say to or about me in a long time. I smiled up at him and he gave me a quick one back, but then of course, ruined the moment by saying, “Then again, you’re the one who should really be careful, she’s nuts.”

My smile quickly turned into a glare, and I threw an orange at him, missing.

He laughed and went back into his room.

“Listen Cecil, I know that Eric here is your boyfriend now or whatever...” Yeah, thanks mom.

“But, I still expect you to follow all of the rules, and continue focusing on your school work.”

“Mom, I’ll still be the golden child. Don’t worry.” I said boringly and then looked over at Eric who couldn’t keep his eyes off of me.

He shot me a smile and then spoke up.

“Mrs. Collins, oops I mean, Renee. I care about your daughter very much, and I will do my best to make sure I’m no distraction when it comes to her academics. I myself am trying to focus on my school work, so it shouldn’t be a problem. If anything, we can help each other out.”

“Thank you Eric, that means a lot!” My mom smiled, “Keep this one, Cecil. You’d be crazy not to.” She laughed to herself as she got up and began walking towards the living room.

Before she got all the way out of the kitchen, she quickly turned around and managed to embarrass me yet again.

“Oh, and before I forget, I know that you and Layla are siblings.” She said to Eric, “Cecilia, I’m not going to tell you that you can’t sleep over at their house. However, I will be talking with their parents to make sure that you’re not alone with Eric behind closed doors, and that you’re only allowed to sleep with Layla in her room.”

My face instantly turned red and I gave her a look that told her to shut up and walk away.

She laughed again and finally went into the living room.

“Don’t mind her, she’s just kidding.” I tried to play it off, but Eric and Layla couldn’t contain their laughter.

“Shut up!” I hissed at the both of them.

What am I going to do with these two?
