Chapter 3 | Someone's Got School Spirit
“Um Naveah... what are you doing?” Callie asked with a confused look on her face as she slowly walked into the bathroom.
“I uh, was just, fixing my bra. You know these damn under-wires are always a pain.” I chuckled, pulling my shirt back on and then my sweater.
“Okay... well I can’t find Mark anywhere, but I got you a water so let’s go. Ridgewood scored and there is still the fourth quarter left so anything can happen.” She urged, tugging on my arm.
“Okay sweet, let’s go!”
“Oh wait, now I remembered why I came to the bathroom... I have to pee.” She laughed turning back around and into the bathroom.
She walked over to the stall that I knew Mark was in.
She tried pushing open the door, but it would not budge.
“Is someone in here?” She asked.
“Mhmmm.” I mentally face-palmed myself when I heard Mark try to sound like a girl. He failed miserably but Callie didn’t seem to really care.
“Oh, sorry Miss. Naveah did you know that someone was in here when you locked the bathroom door and started stripping to fix your bra malfunction?” She asked with her eyebrows rose.
“Oh! Of course not! Sorry for whoever is in there... hopefully you didn’t see my bra!” I nervously laughed as I directed Callie into the second stall. “Here, this one is empty.”
After Callie did her business, we left the bathroom in a hurry and walked back over to the bleachers.
If that wasn’t a close freaking call, then I don’t know what is.
“Hey babe, get your water?” Connor asked while keeping his eyes peeled on the football field.
“I was in the bathroom, so Callie got the water for me.” I stated while opening the water bottle Callie handed me before we sat down.
“Such a great friend you got there.” He teased.
“Where’s Mark?” He asked again.
“Not sure. Callie and I didn’t see him at all over by the concession stand and I didn’t see him at all near the bathrooms either.” I regretfully lied.
“Oh okay. He’s probably off messing around with some chick.” He laughed.
You have no idea.
“Ugh, I wish he wouldn’t do that. He came to this game with us, he should be hanging out here instead of tied up with some slut.” Lucy spat while crossing her arms.
I couldn’t help but wince at her icy words. Little did she know that the slut she was referring to, was her best friend.
“Hopefully it wasn’t that chick we met in the bathroom.” Callie laughed looking over at me. “She sounded like she could be slut material.”
“Who knows... She definitely sounded odd.” I chuckled while biting my bottom lip, trying not to erupt in a fit of laughter.
Moments later, Mark graced us with his presence again.
“Hey guys, how goes it?” He asked casually.
“Oh ya know... football. We are kicking their asses, not that you have noticed.” Lucy replied angrily.
“Whoa, what’s your damage?” Mark asked while running his fingers through his slightly messy hair.
“Her damage is everyone’s damage, Mark.” Callie sang as she snapchatted a quick selfie.
Mark scoffed. “Whatever.”
Lucy rolled her eyes and tried to get her mind off Mark by moving beside Callie to join in on the snapchatting.
Connor wrapped an arm around me. “Mark, you should really think about settling down with someone.”
Here we go...
“Yeah? Like who?” He asked with a hint of annoyance to his voice.
“Not sure. Definitely someone like my Naveah.” He smiled, pulling me further into his side.
“Oh really? Please elaborate.” This seemed to get Mark’s attention as he placed both hands on his knees and stared at Connor with intensity.
“Well, Naveah is the whole package. You need a girl who can hold you down and keep you focused on what’s important.” Connor replied confidently.
Mark moved his gaze over to me. “Is that so? Hey Naveah, have any secret twin sisters I don’t know about?” He grinned.
I glared back into his eyes. “No, you moron.”
“Well you see there Con-Con, Naveah doesn’t have a twin so I couldn’t possibly get a girl as amazing as her, now could I? Therefore, I should just settle for the next best thing, which is any girl I fucking want anytime I want. That alright with you?” Mark leaned back against the foot of the bleachers above him and kicked his feet up next to Connor.
“You are the reason they invented the word smartass.” Connor glared then turned back to the game.
“Sue me.” He smiled then nonchalantly winked at me.
“Is this game over yet?” I exhaled slowly.
“I wish.” Lucy stated.
“I don’t.” Callie chuckled. I hate how she’s always the one just laughing at the rest of us. One of these days, we need to pin the attention on her.
Later that night, the girls and I were binge watching Orange is the New Black and eating Domino’s pizza.
“Do you think we would be as badass as they are if we were sent to prison?” Lucy asked while stuffing a garlic bread-bite into her mouth.
“Are you kidding? We would be scared little puppies.” I laughed.
“I wouldn’t be.” Callie smiled while pouring more Coca-Cola into her cup.
“You’re telling me that if that Tiffany bitch came at you with a cross made into a knife, you would be perfectly fine?” Lucy asked with a smirk.
“Of course. I’d beat her ass just like my girl Piper did!” Callie replied after taking a sip of her drink.
“Oh please. You couldn’t hurt a fly.” I pointed out while peeling a pepperoni off my slice of pizza and eating it.
“I agree with Naveah, you would totally shit your pants.” Lucy commented.
“I love how much faith you both have in me, really I do.” Callie dramatically pouted holding her hand to her heart.
We all laughed and continued watching the show when my phone dinged.
“Let me guess, Connor?” Both Lucy and Callie said at the same time.
I rolled my eyes and picked up my phone.
M: Lying in bed & picturing you naked, Nave ;)
I quickly put my phone down beside me so the girls couldn’t see anything.
“Oh, must be a dirty message.” Callie laughed while stealing one of Lucy’s garlic bread-bites, which earned her a glare.
“Will you shut up?” I scolded.
“Geeze, touchy. Must be a really good message because I’ve never seen your cheeks that shade of red.” Callie stated.
Crap, am I being that obvious?
“It’s not a dirty message. However, it is private.” I stated.
Seconds later, another ding.
M: C’mon Nave, don’t ignore me. Get under your covers and call me ;)
I quickly exited out from my messages and locked my phone, making sure to turn the ringer off in the process. I know Mark is only doing this on purpose because he knows I have Lucy and Callie over. Any other night he wouldn’t text me, he would just call me up and get down to business. He is purposely messing with me and while I hate it, I also kind of like it.
What is wrong with me?
I felt my phone vibrate three more times. This guy is persistent.
“Aren’t you going to answer those?” Lucy asked, staring at my vibrating phone.
“Nope. It’s girls night. Connor knows this so he will get over it.” I smiled.
“You need to talk to him about his obsessiveness. It’s getting creepy.” Lucy laughed to which I playfully slapped her arm.
“He is not obsessed; he just... really loves me.” I shamefully admitted while looking away from Lucy and Callie.
“Hey, Naveah, are you okay?” Callie asked sensing my change in attitude.
“Yeah I’m fine. Just a little tired. It alright if we crash a little early?” I asked looking at the clock. It was eleven at night and I wasn’t really tired... I just wanted to go up to my room.
“Sure thing, goodnight!” Lucy said while making her and Callie’s bed on the living room floor.
“Night!” I chirped then headed upstairs.
Once I was in my bedroom with the door closed and locked, I called Mark.
“Why hello there. Didn’t think I’d hear from you tonight.” His husky, but sexy voice boomed through the speaker.
“Shut up. You know they were sitting right next to me... what if they saw?” I complained while getting into bed and under the covers.
“That’s not my problem. Keep your phone out of view next time.” He replied lazily.
“Not your problem? Need I remind you that if word gets out, you lose a best friend too?” I urged while turning off my bedside table lamp.
“I know, I know. I just can’t let those thoughts roam around in my head all the time. It’s annoying and I hate sneaking around.” He confessed.
“Well, at this point, it’s all we can do.” I sighed.
“Not really. We could come clean Nave.”
“Yeah, totally! Then we can lose all of our friends and the respect of literally everyone at school.” I dryly stated.
“So what? I don’t have the respect of anyone anyways.” He chuckled.
“Well I do! Some of us don’t want to lose everything.” I frowned, though Mark couldn’t see.
“Oh I see, so messing around with me is just some super-secret hobby of yours? Everyone finding out that you could possibly like me would be the absolute end of the world? I’m glad you think that highly of me.” He replied with a bit of anger laced in his words.
Wait... was Mark angry that I wouldn’t out our relationship? I thought he didn’t want anyone knowing just like I didn’t.
“Why are you getting mad? I’m just saying we both agreed we wouldn’t tell anyone because we want to keep our lives exactly as they are.” I tried to reassure.
“Whatever. I’m done talking about this. Now, are you going to take your pants off or what? I’ve been ready here for a while now...” He said and I could feel the smirk on his face through the phone.
“Why on earth did I let you talk me into doing phone sex in the first place?” I sighed while reaching down to pull my own pants off.
“Because the first time we did it, you said you really liked it. Now tell me what color your underwear is.” He deadpanned.
I took in a deep breath and let it out slowly.
This was my life. My life was waking up every morning to a beautiful good-morning text from Connor, to going to bed at night with Mark on the phone engaging in very wrong, but very nice phone sex.
And the worst part, I have no one to blame but myself. I let all of this happen. I knew it was wrong but I didn’t stop. I couldn’t stop. Ever since that first time, it’s been all I can think about every single day. Being with him. Talking with him. Learning that there’s a side to Mark that nobody else sees. Letting him take advantage even though all the while, I’m not caring at all... because I want it too.
| Flashback |
“Leave me alone, Naveah!” Mark yelled.
“No Mark. Not until you tell me what happened!” I pleaded.
Mark was sitting in the hallway outside of our history class. Lunch was in twenty minutes and Mark got into a heated fight with the teacher after receiving a phone call from his mother.
I left class without saying a word to the teacher to check on Mark, because I had never seen him react that way before. His mother was an alcoholic and never really paid any attention to him. Mark was an only child and his father was never around. I only knew all of this because of what Connor has told me. Mark and Connor have been friends since ninth grade just like Lucy and I have been.
Mark used to sneak over to Connor’s house a lot back then because he needed to escape the wrath that is his mother.
“It’s none of your fucking business. Now get lost.” He argued firmly.
“No. You are my boyfriend’s friend Mark. I care about Connor so believe it or not I care about you too.” I confessed.
“Ha, yeah right. You hate me.” He angrily laughed.
“I do not Mark. Just fucking let me help you.” I sighed.
“You want to know so badly? Fine I’ll tell you. My mom called me, drunk as usual, and told me that I needed to get home and stop screwing my secretary because she knows all about us and she wants a divorce and half my money. Then she proceeded to tell me to take “the kid” because she knows that I will turn out exactly like my father and she can’t stand the sight of me.” He angrily shouted with his breathing heavy as his chest rose and fell with every breath.
“My drunken mom thought I was my father and told me to take the kid. She basically confessed to never wanting me.”
I could see the pain deep in his dark eyes. My heart broke for him. Any child that has to live with a parent like that, just makes me sad.
“Don’t do that Naveah. Don’t look at me with pity.” He blurted out while walking down the hallway.
I raced after him and yanked his arm, stopping him in front of the janitor’s closet.
“I do not pity you Mark. I am just upset that you have to deal with stuff like this. No kid should ever witness behavior like this, especially from their parent.” I frowned.
“Whatever. It’s my life and I’m pretty accustomed to it by now. No need to feel sorry for me.” He yanked his arm away from my hold and tried to walk away but I grabbed him once more.
“Hey, I know you’re upset but she’s drunk. She will wake up in a few hours and won’t remember anything. I’m sure she didn’t mean what she said or didn’t fully comprehend it.” I tried to reassure while gently rubbing my fingers along his muscular arm.
“Hate to break it to you Nave, but she reminds me every single day that she never wanted to keep me. She only did because the state told her to and because they promised to give her money from my father’s checks for child support. Money that I never even see, might I add. It all goes to her alcohol and constant partying.” He replied coldly.
“Either way, you aren’t a mistake Mark. You’re an okay guy; you just grew up around the wrong people.” I softly smiled.
“An okay guy huh? You really know how to make someone feel special...” He chuckled.
I laughed in response.
“So, feeling better?” I asked.
“I guess.” He shrugged his shoulders.
“Crap! Mr. Snyder is coming. He gives out detention slips for anyone he sees without a pass!” Mark spoke up.
“We can’t go back to class, the teacher kicked you out and I left without permission!” I whisper-yelled.
“Um... c’mon, in here!” Mark opened the door to the janitor’s closet and we both went inside hurriedly, locking the door behind us.
“Hopefully he didn’t see us.” I stated while leaning against a shelf.
Mark was directly in front of me and the closet was so small I could feel the small breaths he was making that smelt like peppermint hitting me against the face.
He looked at me for a moment and all I could see was lust in his eyes. He took a very small step forward and I tried to take a step back, but there was nowhere for me to go.
“Mark...” I whispered.
“Shhh...” He pushed a piece of my hair behind my ear and slowly leaned forward. Before I could respond to anything, his lips were touching mine and the blazing fire that ignited within me was something I will never forget.
In a matter of seconds what seemed to be a small gentle kiss, turned into a full on make out session with our bodies firmly pressed against one another. He fought for dominance and I eventually obeyed, letting him have his way with me with not a single care in the world. It was as if time had stopped and I was no longer Naveah Olsin, girlfriend to Connor Gaines... but I was Naveah Olsin, the plaything of Mark Chase and I liked it.
For reasons that I cannot decipher I liked that he wanted me, even if it was just for sex. I liked that he made me feel tingly all over every inch of my body with just a single touch. To me, it was almost as if I was in a completely different universe. Reality was not a part of us in that one moment. Reality didn’t exist.
Mark hungrily spun me around and yanked down my skirt revealing my light blue lacy underwear.
“Someone’s got school spirit.” He whispered against my neck, causing goosebumps to show themselves against my skin.
I rolled my eyes and allowed him full entrance to me.
After twenty minutes of hot, lustful, angry sex... we were just standing in that closet completely aware of what we had just done.
“Oh my God... Mark... we just... we-” He cut me off with a small kiss on my lips.
“I know.” He smirked.
“How can you be okay with this? I just cheated on my boyfriend, your best friend!” I whisper-yelled.
“Yes I’m aware. I was kind of there when it happened.” He replied boringly.
“We, we can’t tell anyone! God Mark if you tell one single person I will ruin you.” I said through gritted teeth.
“Relax, Barbie. Why would I want to tell anyone I had sex with you? That is an insult to my reputation and me. Your secret is safe with me Nave.” He laughed.
“It’s Naveah, creep. Now get out.” I sighed while pulling up my blue-jean skirt.
“Wait a second. This isn’t over. Meet me here next Friday before lunch. Got it?” He demanded.
I thought it over for a few seconds. I felt completely horrible about what I had just done. I didn’t know how I was ever going to forgive myself, let alone find the will to tell Connor. I couldn’t tell Connor, I would lose him. He can never know about this.
I was going to say no... but despite my brain telling me to do so, the words, “okay.” came out instead.
“Good, see ya Nave.” Mark slapped my ass once and then left the janitor’s closet before the bell rang signaling lunch.
I stood there for a few minutes once I finished putting my clothes back on. Was this the girl I wanted to be? The cheating, lying, backstabbing girlfriend.
I was also filled with replays of what just happened. I could still feel the sting of marks hands all over my body, dominating my every move. I could feel his soft, plump lips leaving kisses all over my exposed, lying skin.
I didn’t want to be this girl... but, I couldn’t fight my urges either.
Mark brought out a whole other side to me... a side that I didn’t like but also a side that I couldn’t live without.
This was the start of a very wrong, deceiving yet somewhat intriguing relationship.
