Chapter 21 | Fancy Meeting You Here

“Let’s not tell your mother or Jacob about this alright? I don’t want to scare either one of them.” My dad says, after hearing everything that I had to say.

I told him what Jared said to me about the charges and court, but my dad sighed and immediately shook his head.

“Absolutely not. We are most certainly going to press charges, and we are going to take that son-of-a-bitch down if it’s the last thing I do.” My dad states confidently.

“But dad, I just don’t want anyone else to get hurt, including myself again.” I sigh, leaning back against the soft couch.

Once we got home, my dad made me some lunch and we’ve been watching a movie since then. He told me to tell my mom that I called him and told him I wasn’t feeling well, and that’s why we are both home today. After I took a quick shower, he helped me clean up my face so it didn’t look like I had been hit again and that’s when he started lunch.

“From now on, you just can’t travel anywhere alone. You understand? You ask me for a ride or you get Shane to pick you up. No more walking to school or to the bus. I don’t trust that. No more walking Jacob to school either, I will make time to drop you both off every day if I have to, and Shane can help out some days too. We won’t let anything more happen to anyone.” My dad states, pulling me in for a hug.

“You promise?” I look up at him.

“I promise.” He smiles, and we continue watching the movie until it’s time for him to pick up Jacob.

“I’m going to get Jacob now, keep this front door locked and do NOT open it for anyone, got it?” He firmly states.

“Yes.” I weakly smile.

“See you in a bit.” Then he leaves.

I put in another movie and go to get myself a glass of iced tea.

After a few minutes of watching the movie, I hear a knock at the door and my body instantly tenses.

I near the front door and try to peek through the hole. “W-Who is it?” I ask.

“It’s me.”

I smile at the voice and hurriedly open the front door.

“Why aren’t you in school?” I pull Shane inside and close the front door locking it again, and then I jump into his arms for a hug.

He wraps his arms tightly around me and rests his head on top of mine.

“I just needed to be with you.” He calmly states, causing butterflies to erupt inside my stomach.

“Thank you. For looking for me and calling my dad.” I say, walking with him over to the couch.

“You don’t need to thank me Addie. You’re my girl, and it’s my job to protect you.” He smiles.

“You want something to drink or anything?” I ask as we settle into the couch.

“If I do, I’ll get it.” He kisses my cheek and suddenly I find myself moving over to straddle his lap.

“What if your dad barges in?” His eyes widen a little.

“He’s getting Jacob, it’ll be a while.” I smirk.

“What are yo-“, I cut Shane off and bring my lips to his, not really too sure on where this sudden burst of confidence came from.

Our soft lips move in sync together, and I instantly lose myself in him. Suddenly nothing else in the entire world matters as I’m kissing Shane. Nothing.

He grips my thighs tightly and I jump while suddenly pulling away.

“No, stop!” I cry out, suddenly images of Jared begin pouring inside of my mind.

“Addie, what’s wrong?” Shane is suddenly very aware of our proximity and he scoots further away from me near the other side of the couch with a look of concern on his face

“I um... I’m sorry, I don’t know what that was.” I confess, taking in a few deep breaths.

“Did Jared do something more to you?” He softly asks.

“He um, he forced himself onto me.” I admit.

Shane’s entire body tenses as his fists clench. “What did he do exactly?”

“He kissed me, hard... and he put his hand around my throat almost chocking me.” I say. “Nothing more than that.”

“I will kill that bastard.” He suddenly states, standing up as he begins pacing back and forth.

“Shane, stop, please. This isn’t going to solve anything.” I plead.

“I can’t just act okay after everything that this guy has done to you Addie! Why are you so calm?” He angrily asks me, causing something inside of me to spark.

“I have to act calm Shane! I can’t fizzle out and explode right now! There is too much on the line, don’t you get it? He told me if I go forward with the charges, he will hurt everyone that I love, including Jacob. I can’t let him cause any more pain to me or to my family! This guy is horrible, yes, and I would love nothing more for you to beat him until he’s no longer breathing, but I can’t risk anything happening to you either! You mean too much to me! Don’t you see that Shane? I just can’t lose you or anyone else. I don’t know what to do, but I know that I can’t give in to all of my emotions, because that won’t be good for anyone. I have to stay strong even though all I want to do right now is fall apart!” My chest rises and falls harshly and I didn’t even notice that I managed to bring myself directly in front of Shane.

We stand there in silence for a couple of seconds, and then suddenly I find myself falling into Shane while instantly pulling his face down to connect our lips together with force.

The intensity of this kiss even caught me off guard, and I find myself being pushed up against a nearby wall as Shane hungrily kisses me back. The amount of lust in this room is almost overbearing, but I make no move to stop and neither does he.

Shane tangles his fingers into my freshly washed hair and pulls slightly which causes a moan to escape from my mouth. This must have aroused him, as I feel a bulge begin to grow in the center of his pants as he presses his body further into mine.

I wrap my arms tightly around his neck, running my fingers in between his short brown locks while lightly tugging.

Just as he is about to lift me up and guide me up the stairs, the front door suddenly opens and Shane and I instantly freeze as Shane jumps five feet back.

Luckily, Jacob doesn’t see anything but my dad certainly does.

“Well, Shane, fancy meeting you here.” My dad glares.

“I um, I gotta go. Nice to see you again Mr. Bishop.” Shane mumbles while heading for the front door.

He shakily nods toward my dad and gives Jacob a smile before leaving and jogging over to his mom’s car.

“Addie!” Jacob smiles wide. My dad places Jacob down onto the floor and he runs over to me. I open my arms to him and pick him up for a hug.

“Hey buddy, how was school?” I smile.

I turn away from my dad’s questioning glare and walk with Jacob into the living room.

“It was good! I even got a gold sticker Addie!” Jacob proudly exclaims while pointing to the little gold star that sits on his T-shirt.

“Wow! A gold star? Good job!” I smile. “What comes after the gold star?” I ask.

“Ice cream cone!” He cheers. “I wanna get that next.”

“Well, then you have to be good. Really good.” I explain with a smirk.

“I can be really good!” He smiles wide.

“If that’s the case, why don’t you head up stairs and clean up for dinner?” My dad says suddenly.

“Okay daddy!” Jacob says while running up the stairs.

“Addilyn...” My dad begins to scold once Jacob is out of sight.

“Don’t.” I say.

“I don’t mind Shane being here, but I do mind you making out against my living room wall.” My dad glares, only a few feet away from me.

“I’m sorry. I didn’t expect that to happen, and I certainly didn’t expect you to walk inside when it did.” I sheepishly smile, but then frown when I notice his angry facial expression doesn’t falter.

“He isn’t a bad guy dad. In fact, he’s entirely the opposite.” I smile just thinking about him.

“Well, no more kissing, at least not like that.” He gives me a pointed look. “Got it?”

“Yes sir.” I roll my eyes playfully, before heading back to the couch.

“What’s for dinner?” I ask.

“I was thinking take-out tonight. I don’t feel like cooking and I know your mom will be too tired.”

“Sounds good, let me know what you decide to order.” I reply.

Suddenly, my phone goes off and I look at the screen to see a picture of Angie, Jax and I all laying down in the grass smiling up at the camera.

“Hello?” I answer.

“Addie, can you do me a favor?” Jax sounds as if he is in some sort of trouble.

“What is it?”

“Angie had a fight with her mom, and she asked to stay over at my place but my mom isn’t in the best of moods tonight. Can she stay with you?”

“Why didn’t she just call to ask me?” I wonder.

“Well she didn’t want to bother you after the day that you’ve had. She wanted to give you space and let you kind of breathe after everything.” He sighs.

“Its fine if she comes over. Is your mom going to let you give her a ride?” I ask.

“Yeah, I’ll head over in a little bit, we’re watching a movie right now.” He says. He thanks me and then hangs up the phone.

“Who’s coming over?” My dad asks.

“Angie, but not until later.” I say, having repeated that answer quite a few times these last few weeks.

“Alright, I’ll order extra food just in case she’s hungry.” He says from inside the kitchen. My dad has always had a soft spot for Angie. He calls her his second daughter, but I think he just feels guilty about what happened to her father.

“Thanks dad.” I smile, though he can’t see.

“Will she eat orange chicken?” My dad asks.

“Dad it’s Angie. She will eat anything.” I laugh.

“Touché.” He chuckles while dialing the Chinese restaurant.

After he orders everyone dinner, he comes out into the living room and decides to watch the movie with me.

I glance over at him and give him a look.

“What?” He smiles.

“You never like Rom-Com’s.” I smirk.

“What? Get out of here. I love Rom-Com’s.” He smirks back, putting his full attention on the movie. “I’ve seen this before. Uh, twenty first kisses or something like that right?”

I give him an incredulous look. “Fifty First Dates, dad.” I sigh.

“Same difference.” He pouts.

I can’t help but laugh.

“I’m home!” We suddenly here as mom walks through the front door.

“Hi mom.” I say with a smile.

“Hey sweetie, how are you feeling?” She puts her bag down and walks over to me, resting the back of her hand against my forehead.

“No fever. Just headache and fatigue.” I simply say, stifling a yawn on cue.

“Must be doing too much school work, yeah?” She smirks, heading into the kitchen.

“Already got dinner on its way love!” My dad shouts.

“Thank you!” We hear her shout back.

A few moments later, she appears beside me with a couple of Tylenol and a glass of water.

“For the headache.” She smiles.

“Thanks mom.” I smile up at her. She kisses my forehead and then sits beside dad, propping her feet up on his lap.

He takes off her heels and begins massaging her feet.

“Man, that’s amazing!” She sighs.

I smile at my mom and dad’s affection. He always knows just what to do to take care of her, and vice versa. They really are the perfect couple.

I instantly think of Shane and my cheeks begin to turn a soft shade of pink at the thought of our heated make out session earlier today. I wonder where that could have led if my dad and Jacob didn’t interrupt.

My eyes widen slightly to myself.

Could I have done the unthinkable? Could I have given myself away to Shane fully, and so fast?

I get goosebumps just thinking about how intense everything sounds, and suddenly my mom speaks up.

“You cold sweetie?” She asks while looking over at me. She grabs the small blanket that rests against the back of the couch and tosses it to me.

“Thanks.” I sheepishly smile.

A few minutes later, there is a knock at the door.

“I’ll get it.” I stand up and head for the door.

My mom must have given my dad a questioning look, because I heard him mutter, “Angie.” Before I leave the living room.

As I pull the front door open, I’m shocked to see Officer Bernard standing before me.

“Um, dad.” I say loudly.

In a matter of seconds, he is by my side.

“Bernard, what’s going on?” My dad asks. Soon after that, my mom is standing beside my dad with a confused expression on her face.

“We were finally able to track down the van from earlier.” He says with a smile.

“What van?” My mom questions, causing both my dad and I to discreetly scold Officer Bernard.

“Um Bernard, let’s talk outside.” My dad suddenly says, motioning Officer Bernard out onto the porch and following him out. He motions for me to stay inside, but I shake my head.

“I want to hear this.” I say, following them both outside.

“What van Jon?” My mom raises her voice.

“In a second, Linds.” He sighs.

The three of us walk out onto the porch and shut the door, leaving my mom confused, and annoyed inside.

“What did you find?” My dad asks, impatient now.

“Well, one of the guys saw the van pull into the Billard Hotel a couple of cities over. We ran the plates and the van belongs to a man named Willard Robinson. We tried going to the address listed, but the house is condemned, no one living inside. We found an old picture of the man and we put out an APB to try to locate him.” Bernard explains.

“You’re never going to find him.” I mumble.

“What do you mean?” Officer Bernard asks.

“Nobody by the name of Willard Robinson took me. It was all Jared. I’m sure he just used that name on the registration to ward off any suspicious police officers. Jared Winston is a douche bag, but he isn’t dumb.” I say, feeling irritated with it all.

“Dammit... One step forward, two steps back.” Officer Bernard sighs.

“Did you see anyone from inside the van? Or see anyone suspicious at the hotel?” My dad asks.

“We got a unit sitting nearby to watch for any suspicious activity. My men always keep me informed.” Officer Bernard proudly states.

“Great. Thank you. Is that all?” My dad asks.

“For now.” Officer Bernard nods as he begins to leave the porch. “Take care.” He says as he heads toward his police car.

“He’s never going to catch Jared dad. He’s too quick, and too smart for his own good. Plus, he has full access to an unlimited amount of money.” I quietly state.

“I know sweetie, but he isn’t going to win this. I’ll make sure of that.” My dad smiles down at me, and I give him a smile in response.

“Now, to handle the real threat.” My dad chuckles while glancing toward the house.

“How are you going to explain the van?” I ask.

“I’m just going to have to tell her.” He sighs.

“Oh great.” I mumble, knowing my mom isn’t going to take this lightly, especially since both my dad and I lied to her.

After an hour of my dad explaining to my mom about what happened to me today, she spends another hour by my side telling me how sorry she is and how upset she is for me lying to her. I tell her I’m sorry too, and that I just didn’t want to worry her.

We watch another movie together after dinner, just the two of us and I smile as my mom laughs to the movie Bad Moms.

“I need to party with those girls.” She says, winking at me.

“Trust me mom, you’re more like them than you realize.” I smile back at her, cuddling into her side.

“I’ll take that as a compliment.” She laughs.

Tonight was fun, and I honestly enjoyed hanging out with my family. Angie showed up just as Bad Moms finished and we went up to my room to hangout a bit before bed.

I smile up at the ceiling while thinking about my life.

While there is something terrible going on right now, I know that as long as I have my friends, family and Shane, I know that I’ll be okay.

I have to be okay.

I suddenly pull the covers back and lift up my shirt, gliding my hand over my stomach as I feel it rumble. I didn’t eat much dinner tonight, like I originally planned.

My stomach moves a little under my touch, and I scrunch my nose up in disgust.

Maybe I’ll skip breakfast tomorrow.
