Summary

Five teenagers. Five stories. And one night they will never forget. Deanna: I love him. At least, that's what I convince myself - even at his best times. Sometimes it's hard convincing myself those three words, tears falling as I whisper it to myself nightly. I love him. But does he love me? Tod: I'm not me. Not my body, that is. Tara was my name, one time. But never have I fulfilled the role, nor the expectations, a parent would expect of a daughter. No one cares. Not anymore, at least. Mason: I have cancer. There's no other way to put it. It's not fun - not even a bit - but pretending I'm healthy makes up for it. No one knows. And no one ever will. Maisie: I love him. But he doesn't see me - doesn't know I'm right here waiting. I'm in love with a stranger, and that's all he'll ever be to me. A god-damn stranger. Charlie: No one cares. Not for me; not for my brother. I try to protect him from this fact, showering him with safe thoughts and a profound perspective of the world. Too bad it's a fake one.

Life can be interpreted in an infinite number of ways.

I never thought there could be any other perspective of it other than mine, but then I had the opportunity to be proved wrong.

There is bad in the world, one said. There is disappointment.

Yes, I replied, but there is also wonder and excitement.

They just looked at me as if I were an oblivious little boy.

But they didn’t understand that I saw the world just fine... but only from my point of view.

So, my possy from that night (you know who you are), this is a letter to you.

Life is full of disappointments and let-downs and sad moments, but for every step backward, there’s two steps forward in your own personal game of life. For every crying spell, there’s an epiphany to match.

Don’t be mad at me, as well, for leaving you all like this. This wasn’t my choice, but rather my fate. But remember this, the four of you, and don’t forget it - don’t even doubt it. Meeting you all was the best thing I could ask for at my state. You all taught me the things I never knew or even thought twice about. You all taught me how to love, how it feels to grieve, how disappointment can be felt so harshly, how the loss of one can leave such an empty hole in your heart. And I cannot thank you all enough for that.

Because, like I said earlier, I never knew there was any other take on life besides mine. It’s awfully selfish of me to say that, but it’s true. So thank you, my storytellers, and farewell. Good luck on your journey.

Mason.
