Chapter 25 | Blake and Cupcake

I wake up the next morning to my cell phone ringing.

As I slowly sit up, I realize I’m lying on the middle of my bathroom floor. There’s some dried up blood on my thigh, and when I try to move it, I feel a stinging sensation.

I hiss at the pain as I look around for my cell phone. The ringing has stopped, but I know it’s out in my bedroom.

I slowly stand up and grip the edge of the sink to steady myself.

My head is pounding and I look like I’ve been run over by a train.

I brush my teeth, and place a large Band-Aid over the cut on my thigh.

The moment I walk out into my bedroom, my cell phone rings again.

I quickly and painfully rush over to my bag that’s lying on the floor and search for my phone. Once I have it in my hand, I answer the call right before the voicemail beat me to it.

“Hello?” I answer groggily.

“Babe? Were you still sleeping? School started over an hour ago, why aren’t you here?”

My eyes widen. I pull my phone from my face and check the time.

Well shit.

“Dammit, I overslept. I’m sorry. I’m going to get ready now and I’ll be there as soon as I can!” I rushed out before hanging up on Ethan.

I skipped my shower and rushed over to my closet. I glances at my jeans, but shook my head to myself. I snatched a pair of sweatpants and a T-shirt, before slipping on my sandals and throwing my hair up into a very messy bun.

I’ll deal with that rats nest later. Sorry Lex.

Once I was dressed and ready to go, I grabbed my bag and phone and rushed down the stairs. I skipped breakfast entirely and hurried out the front door. Liam already left, so I have to walk.

My mind wanted to scold Liam for not trying to wake me up in time for school, but then I instantly remembered our fight last night. I frowned as I walked down the sidewalk.

Liam and I have never been in that type of situation before. Sure, we bicker a lot, but never anything that severe. I keep picturing his face. He was so angry. Then the yelling.

I shook my head of my thoughts and kept walking, afraid I might work myself into a panic again.

I was a block away from the alley.

I stopped walking and stood just before the opening.

I took in a very deep breath, and let it out slowly. I shut my eyes and rushed passed the alley, not daring to open my eyes and look down it. I couldn’t do it. Not again.

Once I was in the safe zone, I increased my pace and kept walking towards school.

Once I got there, I rushed inside to get a late slip. The woman behind the desk saw my look of stress, and happily gave me a slip without any rude remarks.

Once I made it to third period, Lexi’s eyes practically bulged out of their sockets once she saw me.

I gave my late slip to the teacher, who wasn’t happy about the interruption, and then I went to sit beside my very concerned best friend.

“What the hell Dal,” She whispers while leaning toward me, “Are you okay?”

“Fine, just overslept.” I nodded, keeping my eyes on the teacher.

“Somehow I don’t think that’s it. Also, why are you wearing sweatpants? It’s freaking hot outside.”

“Lex, please. We’ll talk at lunch.” I glare at her, which shuts her up.

I let out a soft sigh and slouched in my chair. I can still feel the sting against my thigh, a constant reminder of what I did last night.

I can still feel the blood running down my leg, though I know it’s just my mind playing tricks on me. The blood has since dried up and the cut has scabbed over.

I can feel my eyes watering, but I quickly wipe my hand over my face to stop it.

I just need to get through today.

Once class is over, Lexi and I walk silently to the cafeteria.

After grabbing a hamburger and fries, Lexi and I head over to our table and sit down to start eating.

“Well, she’s alive.” Ethan jokes while taking a seat beside me. I lean into him as he kisses my temple.

“Sorry about that. I don’t know why I over slept.” I reply.

“Where’s Liam?” Lexi asks.

“He’s actually sitting somewhere else today.” Ethan frowns.

“Why?”

“Because we had a fight last night.” I say to answer Lexi’s question.

“Was it about…?” Ethan trails off, referencing our trip this afternoon to the prison.

I nod.

“What? Nobody tells me anything I swear.” Lexi rolls her eyes.

“I’m going with Ethan today to visit Jeremy.” I say dryly.

Lexi is stunned. Her eyes widen and she drops her fry that soon tumbles onto the cafeteria floor.

“Why in the HELL would you do that?” She almost shouts.

I felt anger pulse through my veins.

Because, it’s my damn life and I can do whatever the hell I want! I already told Liam that I was only going and waiting in the car, but he freaked out on me and damn near put me in a panic attack, just like you’re doing right now! So if you don’t fucking mind, can you at least try to be on my side here?” I all but shout at my still stunned best friend.

“Okay, babe, you need to calm down.”

He did not just tell me to do that.

“Both of you can fuck off.” I glare as I stand up and grab my bag. Ethan goes to grab my wrist, but I snatch it away from his grasp as I rush out of the cafeteria.

Once I make it out into the empty hallway, I lean against a random locker and take in as many deep breaths as I can.

Suddenly a random guy walks up and smirks at me.

“You look like you could use a blunt.”

“Excuse me?” I glare up at him.

“Come on cupcake, follow me.” He motions his head behind him, before he turns around and starts walking. “I don’t hear you following cupcake.” He shouts over his shoulder.

My mind is a complete mess, so much so that I actually start to follow him. I’ve seen him around school before, he’s just your average stoner.

I follow him until we are outside the school building. He walks around to the back of the school, where a few other people are sitting around.

I see clouds of smoke and one of the girls sitting on one of the picnic tables eyes me suspiciously.

“Blake, who’s that?” She nods her head toward me.

“This is cupcake. Cupcake, say hello to Anna, Steven, Kristina, and Joe.” He points to each individual as he says their name and I try to remember them all.

“Actually, my name is Dallas.” I roll my eyes. Blake only smirks.

“Here.” He reaches for an already lit blunt, and passes it over to me. “You need this more than we do.”

I hesitantly reach out and take the blunt between my fingers.

“Don’t be scared cupcake, it won’t hurt you.” Blake smiles at me.

I look at the rest of the teenagers, and they’re all staring at me in anticipation. Everyone, except for Anna, has a smirk on their face.

As I bring the blunt to my lips and inhale, I immediately start coughing.

Everyone laughs, even Anna.

“First time?” Blake asks teasingly.

I nod as I continue to cough.

“Go ahead, hit it again. The rule is puff, puff, pass.”

I hit it once more despite my brain telling me not to, and as I start on another round of coughing, I hand the blunt to the person on my left.

Joe takes the blunt with a smirk and takes a long drag with no problem. He doesn’t even cough.

Clearly, I’m with professionals.

After smoking with these people for fifteen minutes, I realize just how big of a mistake I had made.

My mind is hazy and unclear. I can barely hold my eyes open, but for some reason I can’t stop smiling.

The others are talking amongst themselves, joking around and laughing. Blake comes over and takes a seat beside me.

“So, how do you feel?”

“Huh?” I blink at him, but then giggle. “Oh, I’m great!”

Blake chuckles. “You’re cute cupcake. You should hang with us more often.”

I take this time to study Blake. He has short black hair, and a few piercings. I trail my eyes up and down his frame, taking note of the black pants, white T-shirt and black leather jacket.

“Oh yay, I’m with the bad boy.” I blurt out, but soon after, I cover my mouth with my hand. “I mean, you look, nice.” I try to smile.

“Yeah, I know.” He shrugs playfully. “You’re pretty hot yourself. You with anyone?”

I rack my brain and try to sort out my thoughts. At the mention of a possible boyfriend, Ethan’s face comes to mind.

I instantly nod. “Yes, I’m with Ethan.” I say with a smile.

“What’s his last name? I think I know him.” Blake replies.

“Hart.”

“Oh yeah, his brother is the rapist.”

He says it so casually, that I almost miss it.

I try to catch my breath as I mumble out, “What?”

“Jeremy, I know he used to go to school here. He was friends with my older brother Brenden. Now he’s in prison for rape. Fuckin’ crazy man.” Blake shakes his head disapprovingly.

Okay, so he doesn’t know it was me. Thank God.

I actually like not being that girl.

“Yeah, wild.” I comment dryly with a light chuckle.

This weed is so not helping.

Once I finally grab my phone and look at the time, I realize why coming out here was a bad idea.

“How can school almost be over?” I shout. This catches everyone’s attention.

“Whoa, relax cupcake.” Blake says with a nudge to my arm. “Where’s the fire?”

“I had two exams today. I don’t know if I’ll be able to retake them!” I sigh in worry as I run my hands over my face.

“They have a day next week specifically made for retakes, calm down. You’ll be fine.” Blake laughs and the rest follow.

I do feel a little better at the news, but I still can’t believe I blew off school and my exams just to get high with people I don’t even know.

“God what is happening to me?” I sigh to myself. “I’m not usually like this.”

“You mean high?” Blake comments.

“Well yes, but that’s not entirely what I mean.” I glance up at him.

He nods, almost as if he understands me completely.

“Listen, I’m not Einstein or anything, but you shouldn’t try to mask your problems with pot. I mean it works for some people, namely me, but it’s not for everyone ya know?”

I take in what he says, and I nod. He’s right.

“Then again, I’m sure you feel way better than you did before, am I right?” He laughs.

I can’t believe I’m saying this, but I have to agree with him.

“Yep, sure are.” I reply.

I can’t feel the sting on my thigh, I can’t feel the panic and the pain inside my chest, and most importantly, I can breathe.

“You’re welcome here anytime cupcake and I mean that.” Blake says softly. “I like making new friends.”

I turn to him and smile. “Thank you. I really appreciate that.”

He gives me a quick side-hug, before I hear someone shouting my name.

And he sounds very angry.

“Dallas!”

I look up to see my glaring boyfriend storming over toward me and everyone else.

“Is random people going to be like, a regular thing now?” Kristina comments as Steven shrugs in reply.

“What the hell are you doing back here?” Ethan asks as he looks around at everyone. He seems to recognize a few people.

“You know, just hanging out.” I try to reply calmly. “No biggie.”

I let out a soft giggle and Ethan eyes me suspiciously.

“Jesus, are you high?” He glares.

I watch as he turns to Blake who is still sitting beside me.

“Did you get her high?” He accuses.

“On the contrary, Ethan, she got high all by herself. It was pretty hilarious.” Blake smiles smugly.

“Come near her again, and you won’t like what happens.” Ethan threatens Blake. Blake only laughs and holds his hands up in surrender.

“Hey, all I did was help a friend out.” Blake says as he crosses his arms over his chest.

“Friend?” Ethan looks between the two of us, and I can’t help but smile lazily at him.

“Babe, I’m hungry. Can we stop for pizza on the way to see Jere?” I ask, completely unaware of the fact that I just used Jeremy’s old nickname as if he wasn’t the guy who raped me.

Ethan sighs before yanking me up from the table. “Let’s go.”

“Bye Anna, Kristina, Steven, Joseph and uh… Blakey!” I shout over my shoulder as I follow Ethan.

“Bye cupcake!” Blake shouts in reply, and I see the glare grow deeper on Ethan’s face.

I laugh again.

“Dallas, what the fuck?” Ethan glares as we finally reach my jeep. Liam walks up followed by Lexi.

“What’s your problem?” I sigh while leaning against the jeep.

“You’re high and you skipped both of your exams!”

“Stop yelling, dad! I can retake them next week!” I huff out angrily.

“That’s not the point!”

“Dallas, did you seriously smoke pot?” Lexi asks in disbelief.

I nod my head with a smile. “Blakey gave it to me.”

“Can you please stop calling him that?” Ethan sighs, clearly annoyed.

“Who is Blakey?” Lexi furrows her eyebrows.

“He’s over there.” I point and Lexi follows my finger.

“Ah, I’ve seen him before. Why are you hanging with him all of a sudden?”

“I don’t like the game twenty questions, guys.” I deadpan. “Can we go now?” I glance up at Ethan.

“Lexi, can you give me a ride home?” Liam suddenly glares while crossing his arms.

“Why?”

“Because they’re taking the jeep up to see Satan, and I’d rather not ride in the car with either one of them.” He says simply.

Lexi sighs but nods her head. She eyes me wearily before giving me a hug.

“Keep an eye on her, please.” I hear her say to Ethan. Ethan nods and takes the keys to the jeep out of Liam’s hands.

I hop into the passenger side seat and try to buckle my seat belt. After failing twice, Ethan reaches and buckles me in himself.

“I don’t know what you smoked or how long it’s going to last so just sit there and I’ll stop to get some food. That should help lessen the high a bit.”

I nod at Ethan as I turn on the radio.

The new song by the Jonas Brothers begins playing and I shout excitedly.

“Yes! I can’t believe they’re back together, I love this song!”

Ethan rolls his eyes as he pulls out of the parking lot and heads down the road.

I start singing, and failing at getting the words right, but eventually I pass out against my seat.

It feels so good not to feel for a little while.
