Chapter 10

It was Tuesday evening and I was sitting on the front porch with my grams. I was doing some homework and she was knitting her thousandth blanket. When a car pulled into the driveway. We both looked up and I saw that it was Cannon. "Well, who's that good looking boy?" My grams asked as Cannon stepped out of the car. I smiled and looked at her.

"That's Cannon Taylor. The youngest brother."

"What's he doing here?"

"To harass me," I said as he reached the porch. "Hello Cannon, how are you?" I asked him. I sat there on the bench with a blanket over my legs.

"Sorry ma'am I don't mean to disturb you and your granddaughter tonight, but I thought April and I could work on her science class," Cannon said.

"Not at all, please come have a seat." My grams stood up and grabbed her things.

"Thank you," Cannon said and he took a seat next to me. My grams winked at me and went inside the house.

"What are you working on?" He asked me. I looked at all the papers in my lap.

"Just some catch up work your brothers keep bringing me," I said. "How have you been Cannon?"

"I'm good, how are you doing?" He asked me in a soft voice. I looked at him and he genuinely had a look of sadness on his face.

"Cannon you stop that," I said. He looked over at me like I was crazy. "Do not blame yourself for this. The person that hit me is the only person at fault." I snapped. He just looked away from me. I reached out and touched his hand. I felt him shake some as if he wanted to move his hand, but he took a deep breath and seem to relax some. "This is not your fault," I said and let go of his hand. Cannon's was a story I wanted to know. Something made him very standoffish. I know his parents are assholes, but it just seems like there's more to his story.

"Come on let's get to work." I nodded at him and we went straight to work. After about an hour. I stretched out my body some and yawned. "I think that's good for tonight," Cannon said. I could smell dinner and I looked at Cannon.

"Stay?" I said. He looked over at me. "I know you must be hungry and I know dinner is done. My grams like's to make ten pounds of food. I know there is plenty. Stay and have dinner with me?" I asked him. He looked at me for a moment.

"I think I should just get going.”

"Please Cannon, stay?" I asked again. He took a deep breath and I removed my blanket and tried to stretch out my legs. I had so many burses on my legs and Cannon's face dropped. I covered myself back up. "I'm sorry, I know it's ugly.”

"You are far from ugly, April," Cannon said under his breath.

"Please stay?" I said again and then my grams came out front with two plates of food and handed them to us. Cannon took his and I smiled. My grams smiled and started to head back inside.

"Thank you," Cannon said and my grams winked at him.

"Sorry, she loves to feed people.” He looked at me and then started to eat. I smiled and started to eat. "I want to thank you, Cannon.”

"For what?" He asked me.

"For just helping me with school. I know your busy and don't like this type of stuff, so thank you." I said. He looked at me and score! I got a smile out of him.

"You should do that more often," I said. He just sort of looked at me.

"Do what?"

"Smile," I said and he smiled again.

"Stop." He said and I giggled.

"No way, I like it," I said and he smiled again.

"I should get going." He said as he stood up. I removed my blanket again and started to get up. "What are you doing?"

"I'm trying to stand up so I can go inside," I said. I was a little wobbly and then I felt it as I started to fall to the ground. That's when a pair of arms caught me and in one motion. I was in Cannon's arms bridle style. I wrapped my arms around his neck. He walked me inside the house and set me down on the couch. "Thank you," I said to him. He looked at me for a moment.

"Are you okay?" He asked me. I nodded at him. He walked out the door. I looked at the door for a moment. Bye, I said to myself, but then he came walking right back inside with my blanket. I smiled at him. "Stop that."

"Stop what?"

"Stop looking at me like I'm your favorite person." He said. I cocked my head at him.

"Your one of them," I said. He just shook his head.

"Goodnight April."

"Goodnight Cannon," I said. He left and my grams came into the living room. She was just looking at me. "What now?"

"All three of them?"

"All three of them what?"

"They all care for you April."

"First of all, Cannon doesn't care about anyone.”

"Please girl, I know you are not that blind. That boy cares about you." My grams said. I started to laugh.

"Grams, sometimes I swear you are younger then you are.”

"Yeah, well you had better be careful with those hearts. Or you could lose them all."

"They are my friend's grams, nothing more.”

"You're telling me that nothing intimate has happened with any of them?" She asked me. I just kind of looked away.

"Yep, I knew it. What one?"

"Grams!" I yelled.

"What? I'm not asking what happened. Just with who?"

"Oh my god," I said. "Cody and Connor and I kissed, that's all.”

"Do you like one of them?"

"I don't know grams. I mean I care about them all. They are good guys, but I don't know if I want a relationship right now."

"Well, you had better think about that soon. Before it, all turns around and hits you in the face." She kissed my head and left the room. I know how Cody feels about me. Connor, well I'm not sure if it's me he likes or just my family. Cannon, yeah I don't think so. I said to myself. All this talk about boys gives me a headache. The rest of the week went by slowly. I saw Cody and Connor every day. Cannon hasn't come back. Rosey has only stopped by once. I was walking around much better and the doctors gave me the okay to return to school.

I wasn't exactly ready to drive just yet and it was a fight on who was going to take me to school, but in the end, my mother won. Cody and Connor were fighting when my mother stepped in and told Connor there was no way I was getting on his bike. That made Cody talk shit so my mother told him no as well. Rosey just sat there without saying a word. Which I thought was weird. I thought I would just go to school with her.

Monday morning I was in the bathroom finishing up getting ready. My mother helped me in the car and when we pulled up to the school. I saw Rosey, Bradly, Connor, and Cody waiting for me. I smiled at them as they came to the car to help me out. "You guys, I'm okay," I said as they both tried to take my arms. I saw Rosey roll her eyes.

"Move out of her way, god you two are like children," Rosey said. They both just gave her a death look and I smiled at her. We all walked into the school and everyone was staring at me.

"What are they looking at?" I said in a soft voice.

"Your sexy ass," Connor said. I rolled my eyes, that time.

"Nothing very interesting ever happens around here April, your top news right, now," Bradly said.

"Lovely," I said.

"Someone tried to kill you. I think they are all freaking out about it." Cody said.

"We don't know that the person was trying to kill her," Rosey said.

"Yeah, what if it was just an accident?" Bradly said.

"If it was, then why did they just leave her there?" Connor said.

"Maybe they got scared and ran. You don't know." Rosey said.

"Come on you guys. I don't want to talk about this right now." I said. My legs felt tired and I just wanted to take a seat. Cody and Connor helped me inside the classroom. Layla was sitting there with a smirk on her face.

"Well look who it is. Miss Roadrash herself." She said and her friends laughed with her.

"Shut the fuck up Layla!" Cannon hollered at her. No one said a word as we all looked at Cannon. He just went right back to his books. I looked at Cody and Connor.

"Don't piss him off," Cody said. At least Layla shut her mouth. I took the seat next to Cannon and Cody and Connor sat right behind us. I looked over at Cannon and I swear he had a smile on his face.
