Chapter 17

The cops were all over the front yard and Cannon had snuck out and I told my family I had texted him. He wouldn't leave my side. "Who would do this?" I asked Cannon. " I mean how did I upset someone so bad that they would try to run me over and send me a dead animal." The box was covered in blood and there was a dead squirrel that had been cut into large pieces inside the box with a note that said I was next.

My mother is losing her shit and my dad wants us to leave. Cannon has been trying to calm everyone down. The cops have been asking me all kinds of questions that I just can't answer. They want to know who I have had any problems with. I told them about Layla, but there haven't been any problems with her in a while. I don't have any problems with anyone else. Once things calmed back down. I was sitting on the back porch with everyone. Cody and Connor were freaking out and Rosey and Bradly were just kind of sitting by me without saying too much.

Cannon, on the other hand, was being very quiet and wouldn't leave my side. I knew he was worried and I tried to talk to him, but he just wasn't saying much. "You didn't have anyone upset with you back home?" Cody asked me.

"Not that I know of, but do you really think they would come all this way just to hurt me?" I said.

"No, I guess that pretty far fetched," Cody said.

"You guys I don't know who this person is and I don't even have a clue. I don't know what I did to upset this person or persons this bad. If I at least knew what I did. Maybe I could fix it." I said and I started to get upset. Connor came over to me and placed his hand on my back.

"You didn't do anything wrong April, this person is obviously jealous of you. That's all this is." Connor said.

"Maybe this is your guy's fault," Rosey said standing up and looking at the brothers.

"What the fuck does that mean?" Cannon stood up and said to her.

"Think about it. Everyone in this town is under your spell. Everyone either wants you or fears your family. You guys know all the rumors and ever since April moved to town. You guys are always with her. Maybe it's your fault someone wants to her." Rosey said. All three of the brothers just stood there. My mouth fell open. I couldn't believe Rosey had said that. She stood her guard and crossed her arms.

"Maybe she is right," Bradly said. I was a loss for words.

"Come on, someone that obsessed, really?" Cody said.

"Look, I'm not trying to be a bitch here or anything, but you try to explain this?" Rosey said. "I have known you guys all though out school and I don't mean to make your heads bigger than they already are, but think about the shit you guys have gone through. I have heard all the rumors." Rosey looked right at Cannon when she said that.

"What is she talking about?" I asked Cannon. He just looked at me and looked back at Rosey.

"That was just a rumor." He said to Rosey.

"Was it really Cannon? I mean where is Brenda? Connor what about Melinda and her family?" Rosey said.

"You don't even know what the fuck you're talking about." Cannon snapped off at Rosey.

"Cannon, who is Brenda?" I asked him. He took a deep breath. "Cannon!" I hollered.

"She was just a girl I was seeing four years ago." He started to say.

"Yeah who lost her mind." Rosey spits out.

"Shut your fucking mouth Rosey," Connor said.

"You have no room to talk Connor, tell her about Melinda," Rosey said and I looked over at Connor. No one was saying a word and I was looking back and forth at the guys.

"Someone say something." I snapped.

"So there have been some shitty relationships in our past. What the fuck does this have to do with April?" Cody said. I never hear Cody cuss.

"I'm just saying, what if this has to do with you guys," Rosey said and she sat back down.

"I want to know about these girls," I said and both Cannon and Connor looked at me. I sat there looking at them both. "Well?" I snapped.

"Okay, well Melinda was a girl I dated in my sophomore year of high school. I had only gone on a few dates with the girl when I realized she cared more about me then I did about her. Once I told her how I felt she just sort of lost it. She started doing crazy things and was always there. No matter where I was, she would always show up. Then one night she came to my family with a gun and she almost killed me." Connor said. I was without words as I listened to his story. "The cops were able to stop her and she has been in a hospital ever since and her family moved away." He just looked to the ground.

"Oh my god, Connor that's horrible. I'm sorry you had to go through that." I said.

"Thanks, but Cannon." Connor started to say.

"Shut up Connor," Cannon said. I shot my face towards Cannon.

"What?" I said.

"Nothing, this is not the time," Cannon said.

"Oh no, you're not going to pull that shit now. Tell me about Brenda, Cannon?" I could see the anger on his face, but this time he wasn't going to shut me out.

"No." He said. I stood up and crossed my arms at him.

"Talk." I spit out. Cody walked over and placed his arm on Cannon.

"She was his girlfriend in his freshman year." Cody started to say.

"Stop it, Cody!" Cannon yelled.

"You want to be with her. Then she deserves to know." Cody snapped back at Cannon. Cannon looked like he was ready to fight.

"Cannon, tell me what happened," I said softly as I placed my hand on his. He closed his eyes and then started to talk.

"Her name was Brenda Jones and she moved here during my freshman year. She was a sweet and quiet girl. She needed some help with her school work and I was the one to help her." I started to see a pattern as he spoke. "We started to get close. She was my first and I was hers, but then she started to change." He stopped for a moment.

"Go on," I said.

"I really cared about her, but she depended on me for everything. She started to get very clingy and wouldn't leave my side for anything. It wasn't that I didn't want her around, but she was like glue to me."

"He is not lying April, she was always around him and always crying about something to him," Cody said.

"I was only fourteen April, I didn't know anything was really wrong. I decided the best thing to do was end things with her. That only made things worse."

"I remember that." Rosey started to say. "I knew her and she was always talking about Cannon. I mean I wasn't like good friends with her, but if you had any conversation with her. It was always about Cannon and I mean weird things. Like how they were going to run away and get married. Shit like that." Rosey said. I took a deep breath.

"After I broke up with her, Things took a dark turn. There was a beach party one night and she showed up. She was following me around all night. Even Cody and Connor tried to get her to go home, but she wasn't leaving. Not without me. I didn't know what to do, April. I was young and she was nuts." He stopped talking.

"You did something to her, didn't you?" I said. He looked to his brothers and then back to me.

"I didn't mean to hurt her. I was just trying to get her to understand that it was over between us. This was around the time that Connor was messing around with Layla. We had made a plan to make Brenda believe I had moved on. So Layla and I started to act like we were the ones going out. She and I were hanging all over each other right under Brenda's nose. She came up to Layla and me and Layla let her have it. You know how Layla can be and I just let her go off on Brenda. Brenda took off and for about three hours none of us saw her. We all just figured she went home. I had hoped that it had worked, but then she came back and she stood in front of the big bonfire that was going. I looked at her and she looked at me and walked right into the fire. She laid in the fire and just let it burn her." My mouth fell to the ground. I covered it with my hands. Cannon just sighed. "We got her out of the fire, but she died three days later in the hospital." He said and then he looked away. Oh my god, I said to myself.

"Cannon, I'm, I'm so sorry you had to go through that," I said to him.

"I didn't know she would do something like that. I didn't know." He said. Cannon slumped forward. I sat next to him and put my arms around him.

"That was not your fault," I said to him. "And Melinda was not your fault either Connor. I mean I love you Cannon, but if we broke up. I'm not going to go crazy." I said. Cody smiled at me and so did Connor. Cannon still hadn't looked up at me. I looked over at Rosey. "I don't see what any of this has to do with me," I said to her.

"They make girls crazy." She said.

"You don't know what you're talking about." Cody snapped at her.

"Come on you guys. If we don't know that anyone is upset with April, couldn't there be a good chance that this is some crazy girl full of jealousy?" She said and she did make a good point, but it was just a suggestion. "All three of you got on the let's be with April bandwaggon the minute she showed up," Rosey said. "You don't think that could of pissed off someone?" She said again. I just looked to the ground.

"Come on were all just upset. Let's not fight. I'm not worth it." I said. Cannon put his arm around my waist.

"Yes, you are." He said in my ear.

"I'm not trying to start a fight. I'm just trying to help find out who is trying to kill you." Rosey said. I just looked up at her.

"Do any of you have any girls trying to be with you?" I asked them. Connor just smiled and Cody hit him in the arm. "What Connor?" I said.

"They all want me, April." We all just shook our heads at him and Cody punched him again.

"Jesus Connor, do you think you could be serious for like five minutes?" Cannon snapped at him. "I mean someone is actually trying to hurt April. This is not a joke." He snapped.

"Sorry, but I don't have any crazy girls after me," Connor said.

"I don't either unless we just don't know about it," Cody said.

"Everyone knows we're together," Cannon said.

"Then I'm at a loss, I don't know who wants to hurt me," I said and I felt defeated. Someone was out to get me and we all had no idea who or even why.
