Chapter 26

"Me? What the hell are you doing here? Where is Cannon?" Cody said while looking around the parking lot. I just sighed and looked to the ground. "Oh no," Cody said and came closer to me. "What happened?" He asked.

"It's a really long story," I said.

"Are you staying with your parents?" He asked. I nodded at him. "How about we have dinner tonight?" He smiled at me.

"Sure Cody, I can do that," I said and he walked over and hugged me.

"It's really good to see you April." He said. "I'll pick you up at six." I nodded at him and watched him walk off. I finished putting the food into the car and headed back home. My grams was the only one here. I found her in the kitchen.

"Hey, grams," I said as I sat the things down on the counter.

"Hello, beautiful granddaughter." I smiled at her.

"Guess who I ran into at the store?" She looked over at me while she was strewing her cake batter. "Cody Taylor," I said.

"Oh, he is a nice boy." She said. I just smiled at her.

"I'm just wondering what he is doing here?" I said.

"Didn't you ask him dear?"

"No, but he is picking me up for dinner tonight. I guess I'll find out then." I said grabbing a piece of chicken and placed it in my mouth. My grams winked at me and I headed off to my bedroom. It was almost six when I was finished getting ready. Back in the day dinner was at a pizza place, but I hadn't been around Cody in years. I had no idea where he would be taking us for dinner tonight. I dressed in a tightly fitted simple white dress and prayed it wasnt to much. I left my obnoxiously long hair down and told myself I needed to cut it.

I walked out onto the porch and waiting for Cody to show up. Just then I watched as a limo pulled into the driveway. Cody jumped out and smiled at me. I crossed my arms at him. "Really?" I said. He just smiled at me. I had to admit, time had been good to Cody. He boyish looks turned into a very handsome and sexy man. He seemed bigger and more mature.

"Is it to much?" He asked. I walked over to him.

"I mean yes and no. I would have been fine in just a normal car."

"I know, but I don't drive to much anymore. I'm just so used to this thing." He said pointing to the limo. I got inside and he climbed in next to me. We were quiet, a little too quiet. I knew he wanted to know what was going on with Cannon and me. We pulled up in front of a little cafe. It was little but I knew it was expensive.

"What? no pizza?" I said and smiled at him.

"Oh, they have pizza here April. Trust and believe that." He said. We got seated and after we ordered. Cody looked at me for a moment. "What's going on April? Where is my brother?" He asked. I took a deep breath.

"He is back in New York."

"And why aren't you with him there?"

"Because he doesn't want me there." I watched Cody sigh.

"Tell me what happened April?" He asked.

"I really don't know Cody, He started his business and that was that. I never saw him. He never acknowledged me and when I finally told him how I was feeling. He just sat there and acted like he didn't care. I've been gone a little over a week now and I haven't heard a word from him. I asked him if he was cheating on me. He said no, but I just don't know Cody. I left him a note and I came home." Cody just sat there with a look of surprise on his face.

"I'm going to kick his ass," Cody said.

"Please Cody, just leave him alone. I honestly don't know what happened. I'm a mess, Cody. I don't know what I did wrong, but ever since he started this company. He has been a completely different person. When we got Connor's wedding invite, he said he didn't want to go. I don't know what had happened."

"I'm sorry April." He said. I just gave him a small smile. I was doing my hardest not to lose it in front of him. "So tell me, Cody, why are you here?" I asked him. He smiled at me.

"I just have some business here and then I'm headed back to Chicago." I eyed him for a moment. "What?" He asked me.

"What about your love life?" I asked him. He just sort of looked at me.

"I don't really have time for a relationship. I see women, lots of women, but I don't have time for anything long term." I just rolled my eyes at him.

"I was sorry to hear about you and Torrie," I said.

"Yeah, I knew we were not going to last. Once we started college. She was just to much of a party girl for me and then she cheated on me."

"Yeah, I heard," I said. He looked up at me.

"Look April, I'm going to be in town for the next week. I'd love to spend some time with you."

"I'd like that too," I said.

"I'm really sorry about Cannon. I don't know what's wrong with that brother of mine. You were his everything April. Something just doesn't add up." Cody said. Our food showed up and we ate in silence.

"Thank you for dinner Cody. I really missed you. I can't wait to see Connor. I'm glad he wants to have his wedding here. I hope he doesn't mind me going without Cannon." Cody laughed.

"I think he would rather have you there anyways. Cannon sounds like a real jerk right now." Cody said.

"If I knew what had gone wrong maybe I'd feel better, but I just don't understand," I said and then I felt the tears sting my eyes. Cody wrapped his arms around me and pulled me to him in a big hug.

"My brother is stupid for ever letting someone like you go. He will be sorry for this." Cody said in my ear. I just sighed and hugged him back. Cody dropped me off and promised he would call me. I thanked him for dinner and waved as I watched the limo leaving. I turned to see my mother sitting on the porch.

"Did you have a nice night?" She asked me as I joined her.

"Yeah, It was really nice to see Cody. He is a good friend." I told her.

"I'm glad you had a good time. I was starting to get a little worried about you."

"I'm okay mama, I'm just sad. I miss Cannon so much, but I have been missing him for a long time. Even before I came home." I said and looked to the ground. My heart hurt so much and I didn't think I was ever going to get over this. I invested so much of myself in Cannon. There had to be another woman, I just couldn't think of anything else, unless he just truly didn't love me anymore. Once again the tears started to fall. My mother stood up and kissed me on top of my head and she went inside. I stayed on the porched a little longer.

I was sitting there wondering what Cannon was doing at that moment. Did he toss all my things away? Has he moved a new girl in? Did he miss me at all? Did he love me at all? The pain was becoming to much. I swear I should be dehydrated by now with all these tears. I got up and grab my grams blanket and walked behind the house towards the ocean. I got close to the water and took a seat in the sand. I closed my eyes and all I could see was Cannon and I. I took a deep breath as I felt the tears fall down my cheeks. "Damn you, Cannon!" I hollered out. "Why did you lie to me? You said forever." I held myself and just cried.

Cody's POV,

"What the fuck is wrong with you?" I yelled into the phone.

"What do you mean?" Cannon said.

"What about her?" Cannon asked.

"Are you kidding me right now? Tell me this is a joke, Cannon?" I said.

"I'm sure I dont know what your talking about, brother."

"I had dinner with her tonight, Why did you break her heart Cannon? What's going on?" I snapped.

"Your home?"

"Yes, I'm home," I said.

"You saw her?"

"Are you not listening to a word I'm saying? What is your problem?" I waited to hear from him, but all I got was dead air. "Cannon?" He hung up on me.
