The bell rang for class to be over and I didn't wait around. I grabbed my things and started to head out. I felt a hand on my shoulder. I turned around to see Cody standing there. I watched his brothers and Layla start to leave the room.
"Hey, I'm Cody. Sorry, my brother can be a jerk, as you put it. He is really not such a bad guy." He said. It was hard to stay upset when you have a good looking man talking to you. I smiled at him.
"It is what it is I guess," I said to him.
"So what's a pretty thing like you doing here in this little town?" Cody asked me. I blushed immediately and smiled.
"I just moved here." Was all I could think to say.
"Cody, come on we have practice." Connor hollered out. Cody smiled at me.
"It was nice talking to you." He said and waved as he took off with his brothers. Snap out of it April. I told myself. I started to walk off towards my next class and wouldn't you know it I almost walked right into Cannon.
"Are you following me around or something." He snapped. I just took a deep breath and stood my ground. "Move out of the way." He said.
"Why don't you move. You don't own the hallways you know." I snapped back. He just smiled at me. We both stood there holding our ground.
"I'll move when you move princess." He said. I crossed my arms and stayed still.
"Why are you such a jerk?" I asked him.
"Me? You're the one who won't watch where she is going." He snapped.
"Yeah, well excuse me for not know where everything is," I said.
"Maybe get yourself a map and you wouldn't have that problem." He said.
"I don't even like you," I said.
"Good the feeling is mutual babe." He said and he stepped aside and walked off. I was fuming and lost track of what I was doing. I just watched him walk off.
"What was that all about?" I heard Rosey say.
"That stupid Cannon guy, he is such as asshole." I spit out. Rosey laugh.
"You mean he actually talked to you?" She asked.
"Yeah, and he is nothing but a jerk off." I snapped.
"Whoa, he never talks to anyone." She said.
"You had to have impressed him." She said.
"No, I just bumped into him twice now," I said. She smiled.
"But he is cute?" She said.
"No, he is not. He is an asshole. Assholes are not cute." I said. She laughed again.
"Please, there's not a girl here in this school who wouldn't give there left arms for him to talk to them." She said.
"I'm not one of them." I snapped.
The day was over and Rosey was trying to talk me into going over to the football field to check out the team. I had no desire to see the Taylor brothers again and I just didn't care about it, but I was trying to be friendly even though I was still pissed off at Cannon. I stopped at the water fountain and told Rosey I would catch up with her. "Hello, pretty little April." I heard someone say. I looked up and it was Connor Taylor.
"Hello, Connor," I said.
"So you already know my name?" He said to me.
"Don't flatter yourself," I said.
"I have to say that smart little mouth of yours is a bit of a turn on." He said.
"Don't you have a bubbly blond girlfriend to get to?" I asked him. He smiled at me.
"Maybe I would rather be talking to you at the moment." He said.
"Is that so, well she doesn't look to happy about that," I said and looked over at Layla just full of anger watching us. He just smiled and shook his head.
"I'll see you later." He said and walked off towards her. I shook my head and went to find Rosey. She was sitting in the bleachers next to Bradly. I made my way over to them and took a seat.
"How was your first day?" Bradly asked me. Before I could say a word, Rosey spoke up.
"She talked to Cannon." She said. Bradly's eyes got big.
"What? Really?" He asked. I just smiled.
"Don't get to excited. It was more like yelled at." I said.
"Whatever he never says a word to anyone," Bradly said.
"I actually spoke to all three of them today," I said and they both turned their heads at me. "What?" I asked.
"You talked to Connor Taylor?" Rosey asked. I nodded my head at her.
"Layla didn't scratch your eyes out?" Bradly asked. I just laughed.
"No, but she looked like she wanted to," I said.
"Girl you had better watch your back," Bradly said.
"Why? He came up to me." I said.
"Don't matter," Rosey said. "No one messes with Connor." She said.
"Well, someone should tell Connor that," I said. "Besides I'm not scared of her and I don't want her man," I said. Bradly stood up.
"Well, It was nice knowing you April." He said and I just smiled and shook my head.
"I think I'll be just fine," I said.
I got home a little after five. The practice game ran a little later then I thought. It was actually fun watching the game. Cody and Connor are real good, but I didn't see Cannon there. Layla was watching me like a hawk the whole time. She really needed to get off her high horse. Rosey seemed actually concerned for my well being. I tried to tell her I could handle my own. "Don't say I didn't warn you." She told me.
"How was your day?" My mother and grandmother asked me as soon as I walked in. I set my things down and flopped onto the couch.
"It was alright I guess," I said.
"Just alright?" My grandmother asked me. I nodded at her and could smell food.
"What's cooking grams?" I asked.
"Chili." She said. I smiled at her and went up to my room. There were still boxes all over and I took a deep breath and started to unpack them. I had a dresser with a mirror on it and I started to cover the mirror with pictures of me and my friends from back home. I missed them a lot. I heard a lite tap on my bedroom door and my grams stuck her head in. "I've brought you dinner." She said as she came into the room. I walked over and set on my bed. "I'm sorry April that you had to move here." She said.
"Don't be, I'll be okay. Besides I made some friends." I said.
"Anyone interesting?" She asked me.
"Yeah, I guess so. I met them Taylor brothers today." I said. She raised an eyebrow at me.
"How did that go?" She asked.
"Well Cody seems okay, but Cannon is an ass and Connor seems full of himself and probably caused a war between me and his girlfriend," I said. My grandmother laugh.
"Sounds like high school to me." She said. "Your a beautiful girl April. Some girls are going to be jealous of you. Don't be to hard on them." She said. I smiled at her. She was always on the good side of things and people. She always wanted to bring out the good in everyone and I always loved her for that.
"I will do my best grams," I said. She kissed my head and walked out of the room. I ate my dinner and finished unpacking my bedroom. The rest of the week went by pretty quiet. I didn't really have much contact with the Taylors and Layla didn't seem very interested in me at all. I guess that was a good thing. According to Rosey. I asked Rosey if she wanted to stay over Friday night. Of course, she did and we spent most of the night talking about me and my friends back home.
"There's a party at the beach tomorrow night. Do you want to go?" Rosey asked me.
"Maybe, what kind of party?" I asked her.
"Just the annual welcome back to school beach party that the Taylors put on every year. It doesn't start until dark and it's actually fun." She said.
"Yeah, I'm down," I said. She clapped her hands and we finally fell asleep. I realized I didn't have a swimsuit and I woke Rosey up and told her we needed to do some shopping. My grandmother, of course, filled us up with food before we left the house. We did a lot of shopping around until I found the perfect fitting red suit. It was a two-piece and at first, I felt a little insecure in it. Until Rosey went on about how she hated me and how good I looked in it. I gave in and got the damn thing.
"I wish I had your boobs. Mine are so small." She said on the ride home. I laugh at her.
"Trust me if you had them you wouldn't say that," I said. The sun started to set and Rosey and I were on our way to pick up Bradly. We found a far-away parking spot and the beach was alive with kids from school. Rosey told me that only the seniors were invited, but I'm sure some of the other classes snuck in as well. There was barbequing going on all over the place and a huge bonfire lite up. There was loud music playing and games set up all over. Rosey, Bradly and I found a spot and set up our things.
"You girls hungry?" Bradly asked us. We both nodded our heads and he went off to grab us food. I was just sitting and people watching when my eyes found them. Connor was playing volleyball with Layla draped all over him. He actually looked annoyed with her. I smiled at that. Cody was playing as well, but he was really into the game. I looked around not expecting to see Cannon here, but I found him. He was sitting alone in a beach chair and it looked like he was reading. I just shook my head. It's dark out how the hell is he reading? I said to myself. He is all about the fun. I laughed to myself.
I stood up and took my suit cover off and then I started to walk towards the water. I walked right past Cannon and didn't even look at him. I touched the warm water with my foot and then I felt a set of hands go around my waist. I moved away fast and took a look at who was by me. It was Connor and he just stood there and smiled at me.
"What the hell are you doing?" I snapped.
"I'm sorry but you just looked so good standing over here by yourself. I thought maybe you wanted some company." He said. I rolled my eyes at him.
"Why don't you keep your girlfriend company," I said to him.
"Why are you always worried about my girlfriend?" He asked me.
"Well, you don't ever seem to be worried about her so someone has to," I said and he smiled. That's when miss bubbly herself came running over.
"Baby what are you..." She stopped when she saw me. She looked me up and down and then crossed her arms. "Why are you talking to this pig?' She said. My mouth fell open.
"Pig? Bitch, I'm surprised you could see anything past all that caked-on makeup you have on your ugly face. Just to let you know love, It doesn't mask ugly." I said. Layla's mouth fell open and Connor was laughing.
"What did you just say to me?" She asked.
"Do you have makeup plugging up your ears?" I said. By now Layla's face was completely red. We had also made a crowd of kids come walking up.
"You fucking dumb bitch, do you even know who your talking to?" She spits out. I looked her up and down.
"Used old barbie? I'm guessing." I said and the crowd was in tears laughing. Layla went after me and I stood my ground, but before she could get to me Cannon grabbed her and walked off with her. I just stood there and everyone started to clear out. I went back to playing in the water with my feet.
"Try not to let her get to you." I turned to see Cody standing there. I just smiled at him and went back tot he water.
"You don't look like a pig April your sexy and she is just jealous of you." He said.
"Trust me, she doesn't bother me," I said.
"Would you like some company?" He asked me.
"This is a public beach. You can do as you please." I said. I heard him laugh a little. Then he took off into the water and I smiled at him.
"Come on in the water is great!" He yelled out. I watched him for a moment and then said screw it and ran out after him.
