My relationship with Aiden began to grow stronger as senior prom was approaching. I was excited to go with him, and also a little nervous. I told James I chose Aiden, but I was afraid it was gonna be awkward to see him again.
When we got there, I was glad Aiden was with me. "Don't worry, babe. I'm sure he's okay with your choice. But don't forget he made it easy for you when he was with that girl while we were in Washington."
"You're right. Let's go dance."
As we danced, I looked into his eyes and knew I wanted to be with him forever. I was so distracted by how handsome he looked that I didn't notice James approaching us.
"Hey, mind if I cut in?"
"Uh, sure," Aiden said as James put his hand on my waste.
"So, you chose Aiden."
"Yeah," I said, looking down at the floor. "Um, are you okay?"
"Yeah. I'm sorry for what I did, Anna. I know I don't deserve your forgiveness."
"James, it's okay. I know we were together for a long time. But you helped me realize that Aiden has been there all along. And I realized that I want to be with him."
"Well, he's a lucky guy. I'm glad you're happy with him. Even if he did steal my girl."
"Oh, James," I said, playfully giving him a shove. "I'm glad you're okay with this. And I want us to be friends."
"Of course we're friends. I should go find Maya before she sends a search party for me." And with that, he gave me a hug and walked away.
As I watched him go, I saw Aiden by the snack table and walked over.
"Hey, babe," he said as I approached him. "How'd it go?"
"It went well. We decided to stay friends."
"That's good. Now how 'bout we get back on that dance floor. Looks like James and Maya are having a good time. We should go join them."
As we danced our hearts out, I looked at the two most important guys in my life. My best friend who was now my boyfriend, and my ex-boyfriend who was now my friend. It sounded complicated, I know. But I wouldn't have it any other way.
