Chapter 3

When I got to school, I couldn't wait to tell James the good news. I was so anxious to see him at lunch that it was hard to sit still in class.

When he walked up to our table, I couldn't help but grin from ear to ear.

"Haha, I must really look good today if you're this excited to see me."

"Don't get so cocky. Guess what I got in the mail today," I said as I reached in my backpack for the letter. When I handed it to him, my legs started shaking with excitement.

"What's this?" he asked, confused.

"Go ahead. Read it."

As I watched him read the letter, I saw a smile growing on his face. "We won?"

"Hell yeah, we did."

"Anna, we won."

"James, I can't thank you enough. You helped me finish my script. I don't know what I would've done if I hadn't met you. I probably would've backed out of the contest."

"Well, we probably wouldn't have been friends, either."

"That's true."

"Hey, uh, whaddya say we celebrate?"

"Um, okay. What did you have in mind?"

"How 'bout going to see a movie? I heard La La Land is playing."

"Sounds fun. And a perfect way to celebrate our accomplishment."

That Saturday, James came to pick me up and we went to the theater. I was having a really good time watching the movie with him, and he seemed to enjoy it as well. And I had to admit I was starting to feel an attraction towards him. It was a feeling I'd never felt before. A good kind of feeling.
When the movie was over, we drove to the beach, and he led me to the pier.
"Anna, I'm so glad we did this."
"Yeah, that was a great way to celebrate. It was a great movie."
"No, I mean, I'm glad we're here. Just you and me. Like we could be good together."
When I heard that, my heart started fluttering. "James, I..."
"Anna, we've been hanging out a lot, and I know we've become friends, but I...I wanna be something more. Anna, I really like you."
"Um, I really like you, too. And you're right. I think we could be good together. We already make a great playwright team. We could make a great couple. Um, but can we take things slow?"
"Sure. I'm a gentleman."
"Of course you are."
