A Tough Choice

Chapter 8

I felt much better after Aiden left. He made me happy, and I felt safe with him. Not that I didn't feel the same way with James.

Ugh, this was gonna be a hard decision to make. I had really strong feelings for both guys. James and I had a strong connection, but I've known Aiden my whole life.

Of course, James wasn't making it easy. He kept avoiding me, and he wouldn't even try to give me good reasons to choose him. I still loved him, though, and I tried to tell him I still wanted to be with him. But he didn't wanna hear it. I was starting to get a little fed up.

"James, you're making it really hard for me to want to choose you," I told him Friday at lunch.

"Well, what am I supposed to do? Let you spend time with Aiden?"

"I have feelings for both of you, but you have to let me spend time with you, too. James, I still love you."

"You're right," James said with a sigh. "I'm sorry. I'm making this very difficult for you. I just...I wanted you to choose me."

"I know. I'm sorry. But Aiden is my best friend, and it would've crushed him if I turned him down."

"Yeah, I know how much you care about other people's feelings. I love that about you."

"I know, babe. I care about your's and his. And I know how much this is hurting you."

"Hey, I've got an idea. How 'bout I make it easier for you? What if you date both of us at the same time? We could take you on dates and spend time with you together."

"Ah, a competition. I love it. And...I love you."

"I know, Anna. I love you, too."

So over the next few months, Aiden and James tried their best to win my affections. I had to admit I loved all the attention. They took me to the movies, dancing, and even took me to a few musicals. They were so sweet and charming.
James said he wanted to make it easier, but they were being such good boyfriends that it was getting harder to choose.

Even though I loved all the attention, I was starting to feel suffocated. So I came up with a great idea.

I called James and Aiden Friday afternoon to come over. When they arrived, we all went to sit down in the living room.

"Okay, guys, I know you both love me, and I've loved all the attention. But I think it's time I spend time with each of you separately. That way I can make my decision."

"Well, I don't like it," James said. "But it's only fair. And I'd be willing to do anything for you. Even if it means having to let Aiden spend more time alone with you."

"Thanks, babe," I said with a smile. "Well, Aiden, what do you think?"

"I think it's a great idea. And I know the perfect way we can spend time together. But it may be a little morbid."

"What's that?"

"Um, well, my mom and I are going to Washington to visit my dad's grave next weekend. I was wondering if you wanted to come. I was already gonna ask you before all this happened, considering you're like family."

"Aiden, I'd love to be there for you."

"Thanks, Anna."
