It had been too painful for me to even get out of bed so I decided to stay home in bed. Just so I wouldn’t alarm them, I texted Kimora and Sadia to let them know that I wasn’t going to be at school today. They responded back with messages of understanding and told me to get well soon and that they would bring me the homework. I didn’t like lying to them at all, but I had to keep my home life under wraps at all costs. As for Xander, he had texted me to ask where I was and I told him that I was sick. He told me to get well soon and enjoy my day in bed. After all that, I just went to sleep.

When I woke up, it was around noon and I needed to go to the bathroom. Slowly, I crawled out of my bed and tried not to move too much or else it would just make the pain worse. My legs felt like jelly as I slowly trudged to the bathroom. The bruises on my leg felt horrible and they made me want to pass out, but even if I did that, no one would ever come check on me or see that I was okay. They’d just let me lay there and go on about their business.

Finally, I made it to the bathroom and I did my business. Afterwards, I washed my hands then decided to brush my teeth. When I saw my appearance in the mirror, it didn’t even phase me. I looked like crap. My face was red with hints of pain on it, my hair was all over the place, my eyes were red and puffy, and my lip was busted. My lip had been busted last night when I was struggling to make my way upstairs and it was horrible. I let out a loud shaky sigh then began brushing my teeth.

Since I was in the bathroom, I decided to run a bath for myself and pour some epsom salt in there to heal my bruises. Once the tub was filled halfway, I stripped and slowly lowered myself into the tub with a loud groan. As soon as the water touched my legs, I let out a loud hiss of pain and tensed up before relaxing fully.

After my bath, I felt more relaxed before and it didn’t hurt as much to move. I dried off my body, moisturized it, and put on a hoodie, a sports bra, socks, and a pair of pajama shorts, then I braided my hair and tied it down. I decided to crack down on my homework so I could turn it in tomorrow at school. At around three in the afternoon, I finished my homework and got into my bed. My stomach growled out of hunger, but ignored like I’ve done since I woke up. It was best for me to go to sleep because at least then I won’t have the urge to go downstairs and eat.

The smell of food woke me up again, but I had to fight with myself to go back to sleep. My stomach growled again in protest, but again, I ignored it.

The next morning, it was time for school and I got out of bed to go get ready. After getting ready, I put on a green champion hoodie and matching sweats, a black bomber jacket, a pair of socks, and my black sneakers. I left my hair in the braids I had put them in last night since I didn’t want to deal with them getting ruined in the rain. Once I made sure that I had everything, I put my hood over my head and was out the door. As soon as I swung open the front door, I was stopped in my tracks at the sight of my brother standing before me with a shocked look on my face. He smiled at me.

“Hey. You missed me?” He asked. My eyes welled up and my arms wrapped around his torso instantly. He laughed and hugged me back. Even though I had known that he would be coming back today, it was still so surprising to see him for the first time in seventh months. FaceTime, phone calls, and text messages pale in comparison when it comes to seeing someone you’ve missed for so long in the flesh.

“I’ll take that as a yes,” He chuckled. I sniffed and pulled away to look at him.

“How have you been? Were your friends upset with you for leaving? Was your flight okay? Did you have any trouble getting here? Are-”

“Whoa whoa. One question at a time, Marley,” He chuckled.

“Sorry. I’m just so happy to see you,” I smiled.

“I can tell,” He chuckled again. I moved out of his way and let him inside the house.

“Were you headed to school?” He asked.

“I was,” I nodded.

“Let me go grab my keys so we can go,” He said.

“Kyle, it’s so nice to see you,” Our mother said as she walked downstairs. She hugged Kyle and he hugged her back.

“You too, Mom. You too,” He responded. They pulled away and my mother wore a genuine smile on her face at the sight of him while I was completely ignored as usual.

“Is your trip over?” She inquired.

“No. I just came back early because of a certain situation that I was told about,” He responded with a deep frown. Her attention was now on me and her eyes told me that she was livid and that she was ready to accuse me of snitching.

“Oh....what kind of situation?” She held back her clear anger for me that Kyle didn’t notice. I shuffled slowly behind him as a shield from her burning gaze.

“That’s something I need to discuss it with Valerie,” He answered.

“Well I’m sure it isn’t that big of a deal after all,” She smiled.

“Well telling your own sister that she should’ve been aborted and that she needs to kill herself is not something to brush off,” He responded.

“I assure you that Valerie was just joking as usual,” My Mom said, “Marley is just sensitive about a harmless.”

“Those types of jokes aren’t harmless, Mom. In fact, they have serious consequences behind them,” Kyle clenched his jaw. He was getting upset by our mother just making excuses for Valerie that made me look bad. He saw through her the entire time and he knew what she was doing. She’s done this many times before and Kyle has called out many times.

“Oh believe. We all know,” She said. From the way she said that, I could tell that she was directing that response at me the entire time. It made me flinch and almost fully hide behind Kyle.

“Kyle, what are you doing here?” Our father asked as he walked into the room. He didn’t come near Kyle nor did he even try to hug him. Kyle and our dad didn’t get along all that well so it was normal for them to not hug or anything.

“I’m just here because of Marley. She was begging for me to come back,” Kyle wrapped an arm around my shoulder. My dad glared at me for a split second.

“Oh. Well it’s great to see you, son. Marley, don’t you have to get to school now?” My dad questioned.

“Yes, sir,” I nodded.

“You best leave now or else you’ll be late,” He said with fake concern. Behind that “concerned father” facade, I knew he was upset because of Kyle being here. He was upset because he was not going to be able to do or say the things he usually does to me. He was upset because my protector was here and he was upset because he knew that one false move around Kyle would literally make everything go to shit for him.

“Don’t leave just yet, Marley,” Kyle said, “I’ll drive you to school.”

“That won’t be necessary, Kyle. I can walk on my own,” I replied.

“She’s right, Kyle. She can walk,” Our mother said with a smug glint in her eye.

“It’s pouring outside. I can’t allow her to walk in this weather,” Kyle said, “She’ll get sick.”

“Well it’s what she wants to do, Kyle. You can’t change that,” Our father added.

“He’s right. Marley is just so stubborn,” Our mother joked.

“Marley may want to walk in the rain, but she doesn’t need to. I’m taking her to school whether she likes it or not,” Kyle frowned.

“Aren’t you tired from your flight?” i asked.

“I’m not tired enough to not drive you to school,” He answered.

“But, Kyle-”

“No buts, Marley. I’m driving you to school and that’s final,” He firmly stated.

“Oh no, Kyle. That won’t be necessary,” Our mother chimed in, “I can drive her to school myself. Why don’t you go upstairs and rest?”

“Are you sure? What time do you have to be at work?” Kyle inquired.

“At around nine, but I can head out early,” She replied.

“Well. Alright,” Kyle nodded.

“Great. Head upstairs and rest,” She told him.

“I will,” Kyle replied. He turned to me and pulled me into a hug. He kissed my forehead.

“Have a great day at school, Marley,” He murmured to me.

“Thanks,” I hugged him back. We pulled away and he headed upstairs. Once his door had shut, their attention was now on me. My dad walked over and grabbed me by the wrist in a painful grip. I bit my lip to hold back a cry of pain.

“If I find out that you told him anything, I will make those bruises even worse. Do you understand me?” He threatened through clenched teeth.

“Y-Yes, s-sir,” I whimpered as he continued to tighten his grip on my wrists.

“Go outside to your mother’s car and wait for her there,” He snarled in a low voice. I nodded quickly and scurried to the garage as soon as he released me. A bruise was already forming on my wrist and I knew that I had to hide it all day at school. My mother just smirked at me and disappeared into the kitchen to get her keys. Once I was in her car, I sat in the front seat and waited for her to come out. She emerged from the house with Valerie right behind her. Valerie gave me a smug look as she got in the car. My mother got in as well and the garage door lifted. We all put on our seatbelts and she backed out of the driveway then towards the school.

As she drove, a stinging pain was suddenly felt on my cheek as my head snapped sideways. The impact caused me hit my head against the window that didn’t even crack. My head began to throb with pain as my sister laughed in the backseat at the punishment I was receiving.

“If you fucking tell your brother what is going on, I’ll make sure you spend a week in the basement with nothing to sleep on and I’ll make sure you don’t eat for a month. I’ll make you regret ever being born, you little bitch,” She hissed.

“Y-Yes....m-ma’am....“I croaked.

“As for that boy you’ve been seeing, hang that up because he will never want someone as fat and ugly as you. No man would ever want to be seen with the likes you nor would they even want to take you to bed because you’re just too hideous. I can’t believe I gave birth to a disgusting, fat piece of shit. I wish I had aborted you sooner,” She spat, “At least your sister isn’t a big disappointment like you. I can’t believe I let your aunt convince me to keep you and not give you away like I planned.”

She continued to verbally berate me the entire car ride while Valerie just looked on with a sick satisfactory look. The car ride seemed to go on forever as I listened to her verbally abuse me. Silently, I cried during the entire car ride to myself just so she wouldn’t find something else to yell at me about. Finally, she arrived at the school and we got ready to get out, but she pulled me back by my bruised wrist and squeezed it tightly and I let out a pained noise.

“You better cover this up or else,” She hissed.

“Y-Yes....m-ma’am....” I whimpered. She let go of me and I got out of the car quickly. I pulled my hood over my head to shield my hair and shoved my arms deep in the pocket of my hoodie. My wrist throbbed painfully as I walked and the tears continued to slip down my face. At this point, I just wanted to be left alone. That was all I wanted and that was all I needed. It was best if I avoided Sadia and Kimora altogether because I knew that if they asked me any questions then I’d break down crying.

I decided to just head straight toy locker and grab my books before heading to class. Luckily for me, Kimora and Sadia were nowhere to be seen. This meant that I had enough time to get to class on my own without them seeing me. When I finished getting what I needed for class, I closed my locker and began walking to class. I was grateful that nobody had decided to torture me any further, but life had a funny way of fucking people over.

Before I could react, I was pushed onto the ground hard. My legs smacked the ground and pain shot up them. I bit my lip and held back the cry loud cry that was threatening to get out. Slowly, I tried to lift myself off the ground, but my throbbing, bruised wrist and my legs injured legs wouldn’t allow me to.

Finally, I managed to get back up as they jeered and laughed at me, but this time it was different. This time my vision began to blur a little and my body began to feel heavy. I stumbled around like a drunken fool as they continued to laugh at me. Moving my feet became a very tedious and hard task to me. Soon, I dropped to the ground like a dead weight. My consciousness was in and out, but I heard laugh still while others gasped and looked at me worriedly.

The scenery changed before my eyes and I heard Kimora and Sadia yelling my name as they came towards me. It changed once more and now I heard the voice of the principal as he shouted for everyone to get to class. Finally, I was unconscious as my body was lifted onto something.
