Chapter II
My dad and I tried our hardest to keep the bakery open, but we were struggling to keep up with the payments.
Soon there people coming in to try to negotiate with him and buy the business. But Dad turned down every offer. He needed to keep Mom's dream alive. It was the only thing we had left of her.
"Dad, what are we going to do?" I asked him one morning as we baked honey biscuits.
"I don't know, Sammie. I'm at the end of my rope here. But I can't sell the bakery."
"I know, Dad. But we've already missed two months payment. This is the last time the bank can extend it. We've got two months."
"I know. I just don't know what to do."
"I'll think of something, Dad. I'm not giving up either."
"Hey, anybody home?" I heard Marcus say as he walked in.
"We're in here," I said as I walked out of the kitchen. "I'll be right back, Marcus. Can you help Dad while I'm gone?"
"Sure, but where are you going?"
"I'm gonna get a second job. This place is not going to be sold."
"Okay, good luck."
"Thanks. See you later," I said, walking out.
I went to the library and searched on the computer for job offers that would pay enough money to help the bakery stay open.
As I was looking through all the websites, I felt a tap on my shoulder. When I looked behind me, there was a woman with light brown hair in a bun and a tan business suit.
"Hi. I'm sorry. I didn't mean to startle you."
"Um, that's alright. Uh, may I help you?"
"Oh, yes. Do you mind if we talk in private?"
"Uh, sure." I followed her out into the lobby. "So what is it you need?"
"Well, I couldn't help but notice you were looking for a job. I would like to offer you one."
"Excuse me?"
"Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Sadie Witcox. I am Alec Devlin's lawyer."
"Um, okay."
"You see, I have been all over the city looking for someone who will work for Alec. And you seem like the perfect candidate for the job."
"Wait, you need me."
"Yes. You did seem a little desperate to find a job."
"Well what do I have to do?"
"You will be Alec's assistant. You will arrange all of his meetings and interviews, and you will make sure he stays out of trouble."
"But, I-"
"Do you want the job or not?"
"What do I have to lose?"
"Perfect. I will arrange a time for you to meet, and you will begin shortly."
"Thank you, Ms. Witcox."
"My pleasure, Miss..."
"Call me Sammie."
"See you soon, Sammie."
I couldn't believe it. I just landed a job. Being Alec Devlin's assistant. I was a little nervous. And also kind of scared. I mean I didn't know much about him, but from what I read, he was arrogant, selfish, and self-centered. He was also the lead singer of The Stone Ravens.
