Chapter Four

At lunch time we are all having a good time until Malissa says something.

“I can’t wait for school to be over and get away from all of these idiots.” Alex says as another person bumps into me on ‘accident’.

“Who cares? They are just being jerks because of the rumor that Zie is pregnant. It’s not true so I don’t care.” Malissa laughs, but tries to cover it quickly.

“What’s so funny?” Alex asks and I look over at her as well.

“It’s nothing you guys.” She says quickly. “But what if she is?” Zie slaps her arm and I look at her.

“You are aren’t you? That’s why you have been acting different. When were you going to tell me?” Tears form in Zie’s eyes as she reaches for me.

“I’m sorry Ace, I wasn’t sure and I didn’t know how you would take it.” She whispers. I shake my head and ball up my fist.

“I would of been ecstatic had you been the one to tell me. I- I need a moment.” Zie grips my forearm as I go to stand up.

“Please don’t leave me Ace. Not now.”

“I’m not leaving you. I just need a moment to get my anger under control.” Alex looks up at me and slowly shakes his head.

“I need you right now. Please.” I look over at her and sigh as I pull her to me and kiss her head. “Thank you Ace.”

“It’s what I’m here for. I love you no matter what. Please don’t forget that.”

“I won’t. I love you too and I’m really sorry I didn’t tell you first.” I look at Alex and we both smile.

In fourth hour Eric starts up again as I try my best to ignore him.

“So how long until she starts showing? I mean it couldn’t have been too long ago that you got her knocked up, but she’s gotta start showing soon.” Alex turns around and smirks.

“You are so sad dude. I mean, why do you care so much. Unless…” He turns to me and gasps. “I think Eric has a crush on Zie.” We both laugh knowing that she would never take him in his wildest dreams.

“I don’t care. It’s just something new around here and everyone knows it’s true.”

Alex turns around and faces the front while raising his hand.

“Yes Alex?”

“Eric won’t stop bothering us. We are really trying to concentrate, but he keeps starting stuff with us. Can you move him?” I snicker and slap Alex’s back.

“Eric, move to the other side of the classroom and stop disrupting your classmates.” Eric glares at us as he picks up his stuff and moves. I mouth ‘thank you’ to Alex and go back to actually trying to pass this class.

Later on that day,we all head back to Zie’s house after picking up Max. “So Zie, can we use your car?” Alex asks. She gives us a look and tosses me the keys.

“Ace is the only one allowed to drive. Ace, are you taking Max?” I look over at Alex who is rolling his eyes and then at Max who is already getting his shoes on.

“Do I have a choice?” I joke as I kiss her. Zie smiles and hugs me tight as I sit down with her. “Are you going to be okay by yourself?”

“Ace, I got along before you, and Lissa is here. Don’t worry okay? I love you.” I smile and brush her hair out of her face before kissing her again.

“This is what I was talking about when I said if you can separate from her bro. Come on.” Malissa smacks him as I laugh.

“Be nice Alex. I think it’s nice. Why can’t you be like that?” Alex glares at me and I hold up my hands. He just walks away after giving Malissa a kiss.

“Come on Max. Otherwise you’re stuck with mom.”

We head to the mall and Alex stops me.

“It’s not going to be a secret if your boy says anything to Zie.” I look down at Max and wince. I had forgotten about him.

“Max, can you keep a secret for me?” He smiles and nods his head. “Daddy plans on asking Mommy to marry me, so I need you not to tell her.”

“Can I help?”

“No buddy, I’ll be doing it during school.”

“Then I’m telling!” I scratch my head and sigh in frustration.

“Fine, I’ll take you to school that day and you can be the one to bring the ring to me. Deal?”

“Deal!” We head into the store and start looking around.

“We have been in here for an hour and I don’t see anything that I would give to her.” Alex gives me a look and laughs.

“You have diamonds all around you, yet you see nothing? There is something wrong with your head.”

“Daddy, what about this one. I’ve seen Momma look at it a hundred times.” Alex and I head over to Max to find a ring that looks like stars are coming out of it. The center is a blood diamond in the shape of a heart. The three of us smile at each other as I ruffle Max’s hair.

“This is it. Thank you Max.” He hugs me as I get the person behind the counter.

“That ring is probably a bit out of your range kid. Why don’t you try one of those candy machines.” The lady says.

“Why don’t you try shutting your mouth and doing your job. I want that ring.” I say angrily as her mouth drops. She grabs the ring and smirks at me.

“One grand for the ring.”

“Here you go.” I pull out the money that I had been saving up half my life and hand it to her.

“What did you do? Rob a bank?” I just hold out my hand for the ring and walk away with it.

Once in the car we remind Max that he isn’t allowed to say anything about the ring to anyone.

“I know. Can we get ice cream? I’m hungry.” Alex shrugs and I head to Dairy Queen. After we are done we head home and I give the ring to Alex for safe keepings. He puts it in his gym bag, because no one ever goes through it.

“So what did you guys do?” Malissa asks as we sit on the couch with them.

“We looked around the mall to see if we wanted anything and then went to Dairy Queen. We also saw some really cute girls, but thought better of it.” Alex jokes. I reach over and slap him.

“All is true but the last part. They were actually cute guys.” Zie just rolls her eyes and kisses me.

“Well, Zie isn’t feeling the best so we’re gonna hit the road. See ya tomorrow.” Malissa says while dragging Alex out the door.

I look at Zie who is almost in tears. “What’s wrong princess?”

“I’m scared. We’ve never raised a baby before and we are still in my dad’s house. We don’t have our own place. How can we be parents?”

“We’re raising Max pretty good. We keep food on the table with my job. And I’ll start looking for a place. Don’t worry about it. I love you and that’s all that matters.”

“You’re right. I’m sorry, I’m just so emotional right now. I love you too Ace.”

“It’s fine Zie, you don’t need to apologize. I know that we are going to be dealing with a more emotional you than normal and I’m prepared for that.”

“How can you be so amazing about this. You should be the one freaking out, yet it’s me.” I laugh and kiss her forehead.

“I had already suspected that you were pregnant, and it’s what I want. I want to have a family with you Zie. I don’t plan on ever leaving you.” She lays her head on my chest and curls into me as I run my fingers through her hair.
