Window man

“Amanda lets go out and celebrate your fifteenth birthday,” she said

“Why mom, I’m perfectly fine right now.”

Because I said so. Now come on.”

“Fine, what about hunter?”

“He is going to be here when we get back. I want to spend some girl time with you on your special day,”

“Okay, where are we going?”

“It’s a surprise, but I know you’re going to like it.”

Amanda jumps in the car and her Mom backs out the driveway and proceeds down the road.

They live in the country so it gets dark at night.

“Did you at least tell dad where we are going?”

“No, why would I? He would probably give off hints to you and it wouldn’t be a surprise.”

“Mom, but I’m just saying that it’s dark what if we get stuck somewhere and nobody knows where we are?”

Mom puts her hand on Amanda’s cheek and looks at her saying “nothing will go wrong, I can promise you that.”

A family of deer was on the road. Amanda’s Mom swerved to avoid it, but they were going to fast. The car spun and spun until it stopped. By hitting a tree.

The sound of metal hitting the tree ringed in their ears. A horrifying sound probably heard miles away.

Amanda was groggy and disoriented. The smell of smoke was in the air. Enough smoke to awaken Amanda from her trance.

She looked beside her, and her mom was unconscious.

“Mom-mom wake up. Please wake up,” Amanda said while shaking her mom violently.

Amanda heard nothing from her mom. She opened the door, but it didn’t open enough for her to fit her body through.

Amanda unbuckled her seat belt and smashed the passenger window to get out. Amanda struggled getting cut in the process, but, she was skinny enough to get out. She ran to the driver’s side opened the door and unbuckled the seat belt. She dragged her mom out of the car and placed her a few meters away from the car. Amanda grabbed her phone and called 911.

“911 what’s your emergency?

“My mom, we were driving, and we swerved, the deer. We need help, she’s not responding, please help me.”

“Okay, ma’am, is she breathing?”

“Yes, she is, she is breathing!”

“Ok ma’am, I need you to calm down and tell me your location,”

“We are 40 miles out from wrinkles drive. We just left my mom’s house. Oh my god,”

Ma’am stay on the phone with me until Help arrives.”

“Okay, I will.”

“What’s your name?”

“Ok Amanda, see if your mom’s still breathing,”

“Okay” Amanda puts a hand under her nose, feeling a slight blow of air.

“She’s breathing,”

Sirens are heard in the distance. Becoming louder and louder.

“Mom, I hear them. I see flashing lights. They’re coming to help us, mom. I can’t lose you!” Amanda screams.

The lights are closer and closer, the ambulance stops and A man and woman hop out.

They bend down over Amanda’s mom.

Lifting her on the gurney.

The woman looks at Amanda and speaks

Ma’am, your mom might have some brain damage, we need to go right away. She is in bad condition. You can ride in the ambulance with us. She needs a lot of support.”

Amanda hops in the ambulance, and they drive away. In 30 minutes they arrive at the Emergency Room. A team of people comes out with a hospital bed, taking Amanda’s mom away. Leaving Amanda worried while being tended to by a nurse.

“Amanda wake up” I hear a soft voice say

“Mom is that you. I’m sorry. It should have been me. I should have died. Why did you leave me?” I let a small tear fall down my cheek.

“No Amanda, it’s Taira, wake up for me Hun everything is going to be okay,”

“Taira is that you?”

“Yes, Amanda, it is.”

I open my eyes, and Taira is sitting beside me. Touching my face softly.

“Taira, what’s going on?”

“You were having a bad dream, and you were crying while mumbling about your mom.”

“I was?”

“Yeah, you were Amanda, but it will be okay, I am here for you if you want to talk. Let’s go to the kitchen I will make some coffee. It’s almost twelve o’clock The window man should be here in a few.”

“Okay, thank-you Taira.”

I get up and Taira helps make the bed. Taira wakes up tiles, and we go into the kitchen.

“Amanda I thought you were leaving tomorrow? Why are you here?” tiles asks me.

“Well, tiles I decided to help your mom out some before I get going.”

“Oh, okay, you will come back to visit right? ”

" Yeah, I will tiles. I can promise you that.”

We were interrupted by a knock on the door

“Hey, Taira I think the window man is here.”

Knock knock.

“It’s the window man company, is anyone home.”

The voice was rough and ridged. Taira looked at me and smiled, waving me towards the door.

“You want me to open it?”

“Yeah, go ahead,”

I open the door to be greeted by a blonde.

“Hey, my name is Ryder, I will fix your windows today. May I come in?”

“Okay, um, come right in,”

I open the door wider so he can come in, and he steps over the threshold. I show him the windows one by one and I notice he’s writing on his notepad. I showed him the last window, and we went back to Taira and tiles.

“Okay, I have checked the damage, and it’s a lot. I’m going to be honest with you ma’am. It’s going to be a lot of money to fix these windows.” he says looking at Tiara

“How much are we talking?” I say.

“We’re talking seven hundred dollars,” he replies looking in my direction

“But, we don’t have that kind of money.” Taira cries.

" I can buy them. ” I say

“Amanda, you are too kind, but I can’t accept it,”

“Taira, think of it as a thank you. For being there for a person you don’t even know,”

I go into the basement and retrieve my duffle bag. Taking seven hundred out of the two thousand dollars I retrieved from my father’s house. I climb the stairs and make my way to the kitchen. I hand the money to Ryder and sit beside Taira.

“Is that enough?” I ask.

“Yeah, it is. I will begin working in a couple of hours. I have to get some measurements and get the windows from headquarters so I can install the windows in the house,”

“Okay, thank you so much” Taira and I say in unison

“You’re welcome,” he says

Ryder turns and leaves, closing the door behind him. Two minutes later he drives off.

“Amanda, I don’t want to keep you here. You need to start what you planned to do. I will drive you to the station tomorrow, okay.”

“Okay, Taira.”

Taira begins to make grits and eggs. We sit down at the table in a dig in by the time we were done eating and putting away dishes. Ryder was back.

“Taira rider is back.”

I open the door for him. He smiles at me. Somehow along the way his shirt came off and oh my God this man is a sight to see. I would date this dude, but he is out of my league and he’s too perfect. I look at Tiara and she is smirking like why is she smirking?

“Taira, why are you smirking?”

“Amanda, don’t you see that he is a gorgeous man?”

“Yeah tiara I do, he’s out of my league, I mean look at him. He has Emerald eyes, he probably has ABS, and he looks like a freaking model. I am just a plain human. I don’t even know what happiness is.”

“Amanda, happiness is defined in so many ways. It just takes time.”

“Yeah, I know.”

I hear footsteps coming towards us and it’s Ryder.

“Hey, all the windows are done. So I will head out. Here’s my card if you need help with anything.” He says.

He handed the card to me. Looking directly in my eyes. Like I really don’t know how to feel about that.

I take the card and place it on the dining room table. While he exits the house to his truck and drives away.

“Tiara since the windows are fixed. I will take my shower. I will be out soon.”

I go to the basement and collect my pink pajamas. My clothes were washed somehow, I don’t know when but I’m happy they are clean. I get out of the basement and into the bathroom and closed the door.

The bathroom still looks sparkling clean somehow. I walk towards the shower throwing back the shower curtain and turn on the water. Slowly getting undressed. I test the water with my hands to see if it’s warm enough. Finally, I step in the shower to be met with sweet heaven.

The water temperature is just right, and it’s so soothing. I grab my washcloth from the top of the shower and wash my body. I think I feel an ounce of happiness. I mean, I escaped my father, met a wonderful, smart child, I have spent time with a protective generous mother. I feel like everything is going right for once in my life.

I rinse myself off and step out, wrapping the towel around me. I dry myself off and slip on my clothes. I put my dirty clothes in my duffle bag and go into the kitchen.” Tiara I’m going to go to sleep. It’s been a long day”

Indeed, it has Amanda. We will soon follow you, we just have to clean ourselves up.”

“Okay, good night.”

I walk towards Amanda and tiles, giving them both a kiss on the cheek.

I turn around and head towards the basement. I go in and pull back the covers and slip in the bed.

I wonder what made me have that dream about my mom last night. I haven’t had that dream in ages.

The thought left me restless. I can’t figure out why.

I hear Tiara and Tile’s footsteps. They go down the steps and Taira pulls back the covers for tiles and kisses him good night.

She shuffles towards the bed and slides in. Her protective presence allowed me to close my eyes and drift off.
