2. Nicotine

Reid and I talked for a good hour or two before I decided to stop being selfish and ask if he wanted to go to bed.

“Yeah, I’m honestly exhausted.” He ran a hand over his right eye, rubbing it tiredly.

“I’ll show you the guestroom,” I lead him up the stairs and stopped at the door next to my own room.

“Alex left your suitcase on your bed... Goodnight.” I smiled shyly before turning to my own door before I could enter my room he grabbed my arm; I flinched slightly.

He pulled me into his arms and gave me a hug, “I missed you so much Adelyn...” he whispered against my hair, my arms wrapped around his torso.

“I missed you too,” I admitted, he seemed to hold me tighter before he let go.

I headed off to bed after brushing my teeth and combing my hair.

Tomorrow would be the start of my new life.

My eyes opened, rays of light steamed though some of the opened areas in the foliage of the trees above. I sat up and looked around me, before I looked down at myself, a white gown well past my feet replaced my clothes. I stood once I heard the sound of rushing water. I lifted the skirt of my dress as I walked through the grass, the green tickled my feet.
I finally found the source of the rushing water, a waterfall flooded into a lake, I walked towards the water, my reflection a bit blurred but suddenly turned gray as thunder erupted. I looked back at where I was sitting only seconds before, I was met with endless trees, I looked back at the water but was met by yet another wall of trees. I was in the middle of the woods, my dress ripped and muddy.

“Adelyn...” a soft whisper echoed through the forest, I looked all around myself and saw nothing and no one.

“Adelyn.” I turned quickly but couldn’t find where the voice was coming from.

As the voice got loud, the urge to run became more known. I ran not knowing any real destination, my feet carried me through the woods for who knows how long before I ran into someone and fell. I looked down at the feet in front of me before looking up, I crawled away like a wounded animal. He picked me up with no problem, I stood before him, my eyes averted.

“Adelyn... Look at me.” his soft voice cooed as he lifted my chin.

“What do you want?” I questioned through clenched teeth.

“You Adelyn, you’re all I’ve ever wanted.”

I ripped myself away from him, his dark eyes watched me. He grabbed me by the back of the neck, a fist full of my hair in his hand, he forcefully pulled me against him.

“Stop Dylan, please don’t hurt me...”

Suddenly he disappeared and everything went black.

-end of the dream-

I jolted awake, the burning in my throat and the hot tears leaving my eyes making me feel pathetic, I looked down at myself, realizing I had been clutching my blanket tightly, I released the now wrinkled fabric from my trembling hands. I threw the blankets off of myself and stood up, letting the hardwood floors under my warm feet remind me that I was awake and that the nightmare was over. I made my way into my bathroom, my reflection looked like my ghost, my face pale and my eyes wide. I looked away from the mirror as I splashed water on my face, the ball of anxiety in my stomach making me feel nauseous. I quickly stripped down and got into the shower. I stared at the shower wall, letting the water wash away the sweat and tears from my skin. I let the sobs trapped in my burning chest escape, relying on the sound of the shower to hide my cries. Once I was out of the shower, my skin was covered in goosebumps, the skin around my eyes and nose red. I trudged back into my room, only to be scared half to death when I saw Reid standing there.

“Reid, you scared me.” I gasped, holding a hand to my towel-clad chest.

“I’m sorry, I know I shouldn’t have come in without permission, but I heard you crying and I thought that maybe you were hurt.” he quickly explained,

I looked at him, unable to come up with an excuse, “I..um..” my mouth opened and closed as I tried to make literate sentences; Reid looked at me knowingly, as if telling me not to lie to him.

“I had a nightmare...” I said simply, he frowned, knowing that there was more behind my vague answer.

“Hate to interrupt but is there a reasonable explanation as to what is happening here?” my brother’s voice deferring whatever Reid was going to say.

I sighed, knowing that what Alex walked into looked wrong; I ignored him as grabbed some clothes and headed back into the bathroom, deciding to let Reid handle the explanation.

As I walked out I was instantly questioned, “You’ve been having nightmares again?” Alex asked me, a worried expression on his face, making him look much older than he actually was, I nodded, looking down in defeat.

“I’ll leave you guys to talk..” Reid mumbled and left my room, Alex sat down next to me.

“You told Mom that you weren’t having nightmares any more...”

“I didn’t want to worry her while she’s on her trip, she has enough to stress over.”

Our mom is one of the strongest women I know, she works hard to give us the life she says we deserve. She’s a single mom who works with a CEO and has to travel often, I don’t know how she does it.

Alex wrapped his arm around my shoulders, “You know you can talk to me about anything, right?

I nodded and hugged him, after a little while of talking we headed down to the kitchen, everyone was sitting at the dinner table.

“Good Morning guys,” I smiled as I sat down, after exchanging greetings I began to eat,

We talked about our favorite memories and Reid asked a few questions trying to catch up.

“So what brought you back here? From what I’ve heard you basically fell off the face of the Earth 4 years ago.” Eli asked Reid, his tone more judgmental than he probably wanted it to be.

“I um... had some free time, Alex contacted me and I thought it’d be a good idea to surprise my best friend,” Reid emphasized ‘best friend’ and I could tell Eli was annoyed.

“Well, it’s getting late, we have to be at the airport in 3 hours...you should go get ready,” Alex suggested, I nodded and went into my room changing into a simple outfit.

“I’m gonna drop off a few things we need to mail.” Alex let me know, I nodded.

“I guess this is goodbye,” Jade said sadly, I shook my head and hugged her.

“It’s not a goodbye, it’s a see you soon...” I whispered as she hugged me back.

“I’ll visit when we go on winter break,” she pulled away.

I hugged Nate, “You won’t get rid of us that easy kiddo.” He ruffled my hair. I smiled, slapping his chest playfully.

Nate and Jade left, leaving me alone with Eli and Reid, Eli was going to stay here until my mom got home from her trip, she didn’t want us to leave the house with all her things still inside.

“I’m gonna bring down my suitcases,” I let the guys know.

“I’ll help,” They both offered to help, shooting a glare at each other

“No, it’s fine, you guys just talk, get to know each other.”

I started by double checking what was in the suitcases and for anything I may have missed, once everything was organized, I began to head down the stairs I heard Eli talking to Reid, I listened quietly.

-Eli’s POV-

“So what are you really doing here?” I asked Reid, he knows I don’t like him and I’m glad he knows it.

“I already told you, I’m here because Alex asked me to be, I’m Adelyn’s best friend, I want to make the move easier.” He was calm and composed, but I could tell he was uncomfortable.

“Were, you were her best friend... After leaving her for 4 years you want to come to sweep her off her feet and make her forget any of us ever existed.” I accused.

“You’re wrong, I never meant to hurt her,” Reid responded, starting to lose his cool. So that’s what makes him tick

“I know who you really are and what you’re trying to do. it’s not going to work.”

“You’re just paranoid.” He bit back, I heard a cough, Adelyn cleared her throat as she brought down her suitcase, just then Alex walked in.

*_Adelyn’s POV_*

I cleared my throat awkwardly, Alex walked in.

“I’m gonna take these suitcases and we’ll leave in five.” He let me know, I nodded and Reid offered to help him. I headed upstairs, grabbing my laptop bag, it was the last thing left.

“Addy... how much did you hear?” Eli asked leaning against the door frame.

“Enough,” I responded quietly.

“Look,” he walked towards me and grabbed my hands.

“I care about you Adelyn, I just don’t want you to get hurt.” I sighed and hugged him, he’s a good friend.

I heard Alex honk his horn,

“I should go...” I looked up at Eli and he nodded.

We made it to the airport on time, soon began to go through the security check; we sat and waited for our flight to be called. Reid got on the same flight as us but our seats were farther apart. My phone began to ring, I didn’t even have to check who it was to know it was Dylan, his ringtone - Pick up the Phone by Falling In Reverse playing as a picture of him lit up my screen. {Pick up the phone, Answer your text, Well I apologize about last night I really didn’t mean to disrespect.. you, you better be alone! No, I’m not obsessed,.. but if I catch you with somebody else you know that I am gonna be upset.} I put my phone on silent and ignored the calls. “Now boarding flight 139 to Portland Oregon, gate 11.” Said a voice over the intercom.

“That’s us.”

-*3rd person*-

“Answer the phone Adelyn...” he held a lighter to the cigarette between his lips as he waited.
To Dylan, Adelyn’s voice itself was addictive as a drag from a cigarette. He was sent to voicemail again, he growled, throwing the phone across the room. He sat against the wall his head in his hands,

“She doesn’t love you anymore man..”

“Shut up!”

“Why did you hurt her?”

“She...I didn’t mean to, I love her. So much it fucking hurts.”

“But..you don’t hurt the ones you love..but you did, you put yourself in a position to lose her, nobody but you...”

“Shut the hell up!” Dylan yelled losing his temper.

He finally shut up,

“Adelyn won’t get rid of me that easily...”
