Chapter 13

Hunter:

I set up a game of Chess on the floor.

"You're welcome to play with me." I looked up to Luc. He had his eyes closed.

Oh well. I moved a pawn up two spaces anyway.

"I have a half day at school today. Did you have those at your old school?" I asked as I stood up.

Luc didn't answer.

"Ah. Oh well. I'll see you in a few of hours." I said.

I went into the bathroom and looked in the mirror. I pushed my hair out of my face. Maybe instead of my normal red, I'll dye it deep red. Seems like a good idea.

"Hey Rachel. Wanna dye my hair?" I called as I walked out of the bathroom.

"Sure. When?" She asked as she joined me in the hallway.

"As soon as I get the dye." I answered.

"Ok." She responded.

Us older kids would walk to our school, while Mrs. Carte would drive the younger ones to their school.

She suddenly gasped, "We can twin!!"

"Huh?" I questioned.

"I've always wanted to dye my hair! Let's do it together!" She was all excited.

"Okay okay." I mumbled.

"Come on! We should go after school." Rachel exclaimed.

I nodded my head.

Once we got into school we branched off. "See you later!"

At lunch, I sat with Rachel and my friend Clarke.

"What's wrong with your natural red?" Clarke asked. He was the "voice of reason" of the group.

"Nothing. I just...you know...wanna switch it up." I responded lowly.

"It'll come out! Eventually." I added.

Clarke blew air. "Oh come on! It'll be fine." I said giddy. I playfully shook his shoulders.

"Hey. You wanna watch Rachel dye my hair? I'll probably dye her's afterwards." I said to Luc after entering the room.

His damp hair shook and his face had fear written all over it. A tear rolled down his cheek.

"What's wrong?" I asked. He shook his head.

"Okay." I said dejectedly. I couldn't tell if I scared him, or if it was something else. Maybe a combination of both.

I looked down. The Chess board was untouched.

"Well, I'm gonna go." I told him.

I went upstairs; the girls are on the third floor, us guys are on the second.

I entered Rachel and Lexa's room.

"Hey Hunter." Lexa greeted.

I waved at her. "Okay you ready?" I asked Rachel.

Rachel nodded.

Ugh. My ass is numb. I was heading downstairs to go wash my hair.

After that I went to go dye Rachel's hair.

"Has Luc said anything else?" Rachel asked while I was working.

"No." I answered.

"He is more reactant though." I added.

"He'll shake his head only." I said.

"I guess that's improvement." Rachel said.

I silently agreed.

"Whaddya think?" I asked Luc about my hair. No response, no reaction.

"Okay." At this point it's late. I'm tired. I laid in my bed.

When I woke up in the morning, I had a thought.

I sat up and sat on the edge of the bed. Luc was still asleep. I could tell the difference between him sleeping and just having his eyes closed.

"I need to clean up that Chess board. Before someone trips over it." I thought to myself.

I looked down at it. One of the pawns on the other side had been moved. I was happy. He moved! He's playing with me!

I got dressed then moved a piece. Afterwards, I ran upstairs to Rachel.

"Rachel! He's playing with me while I'm asleep!" I told her.

She suppressed a laugh, "Pfft...um...okay,"

I realized what I had said.

"Chess! I set up a game of Chess the other day and moved my piece. This morning his piece was moved." I explained all excited.

"Oh...cool...So he's not a vegetable." Rachel said slowly.

"When can the rest of us meet him?" Lexa asked innocently.

"Hey Lexa." I greeted her first.

"Luc's a bit...unwell. We're waiting for him to get better before he can meet anyone." I said to her.

"But he's been unwell for a long time." She said.

"I know." I sighed.

"We just have to wait for him to be ready." I perked up.

"You guys! Let's go!" Mrs. Carte yelled from downstairs.

"Coming!" We all yelled back.

"Wow!" Clarke gasped at lunch.

"You guys really did it!" He exclaimed. What? You thought I was joking? Rachel's new hair color really agreed with her. Mine...well...depends on the style.

Wesley came and sat down beside Rachel. "Hey. Drag that guy out of the room for once. You can't keep him to yourself, and the rest of us can't get in." He said.

I threw up my hands. "Why is everyone so obsessed with him?!"

"He's been living at the home for six months and no one's seen him since the day he got here." Wesley chided. I rolled my eyes.

"He'll come out when he's ready! And in the meantime, let me work on him!" I snapped.

"You need to start coming out of your room, Wesley. You've been brooding for too long." Rachel interjected.

"Wha- Pfft! I'm not brooding!" Wesley exclaimed.

"I'm thinking!" He then said.

"Right." The three of us doubted him. Wesley grumbled and went back from whence he came.

"Do you think Luc would be okay if I hung out in there for a bit?" Rachel asked me.

"I don't know. Maybe if you stayed quiet and not gang up on him." I said.

She scoffed a little, then laughed. "I'll be nice. Quiet like a church mouse."

"Oh Luuc!" I called happily as I entered the room with Rachel following behind.

Yeah, I'm definitely the one scaring him.

He responded by pulling the covers over his head. First time I've seen him move, really. Aside from the other day. Rachel moved past me. "Wait." I called. I thought she was going to grab the covers from him, but she crawled her ass into my bed!

"What are you doing?" I asked.

"It's cold and I'm tired." She responded.

I groaned and grit my teeth. I climbed into the bed with her. I was tired too.

Somehow we all simultaneously took a nap. I got an idea while I was half asleep and half awake.

I'd already asked, but that was a while ago. When we were all awake, I asked Luc if he wanted to take a walk with us; just to the tree and back. He shook his head, of course.

There was a knock on the door. It burst open and Jackson was standing in the threshold jumping up and down.

"You guys! Emily ordered pizza!" He said excitedly.

"Ooh." Rachel said before leaving after Jackson.

I looked back at Luc. "Want me to bring you something?" He just stared silently. I'm going to get to the bottom of him. He's an enigma wrapped inside a burrito of mystery wrapped inside a taco of fear. I want to speak to him properly.

"Come on, Hunter!" Lexa said as she ran past the room.

"Okay..." I said as I left.
