Chapter 15

•Josie's POV•

Would it be weird if I say my heart skipped a beat in this kind of situation? Cause well, it did.

I really don't know what to do right now. Should I run into his arms and give him the tightest hug ever? Cause to be honest I kinda missed him, maybe just a little bit though.

Okay, who am I kidding I missed him a lot.

Sigh. Maybe I should just walk up to him and forcefully drag him outside to have a conversation on why he has been avoiding me and the others lately.

Or I can simply just keep my butt fixed on this chair while...

"Josie!!!" A voice screams my name.

Not just any voice, a voice that sounds like Vivian. Vivian? Come to think think of it, I haven't hanged out with her in a while. I didn't even notice her come in though.

"Yeah you wouldn't. Your eyes were fixed on Jake," my subconscious says.

"Hey Vivian." I say, standing up from my chair to pull her into a hug.

"How've you been lately?" I ask.

"I've been good, we definitely need to hangout more though. I'm getting tired of Jake." She says and we both laugh.

"I agree though. How does this weekend with Em and I sound?"

"I'm all in." I hear Vivian say, but my attention travels somewhere else.

I notice Jake through the corner of my eyes, tapping away on his phone as he finds himself a table.

Okay I really can't take this anymore. I should just go talk to him if he isn't...

"Josie?" Vivian calls me interrupting my thoughts.
"Sorry, what'd you say?" I think I heard her say something...

"Who's the hottie?" Vivian asks, referring to Hunter.

"Oh, my bad. Vivian, this is Hunter, my childhood best friend." I say, after turning and making a gesture with my hand.

"Hunter, Vivian." I add, as they both exchange greetings.

"Alright, I'll call you later." She says, before walking towards Jake's table.

"So, who's that guy? I mean the one that fully got your attention and made you forget I'm still here." He says jokingly, earning a chuckle from me.

"He's just a friend I guess, but he's been avoiding me lately, for like two weeks now and I still have no idea why." I explain to Hunter.

"Oh, then why not just go talk to him then?" He asks.

"Talk to him? Like right now?"

"Yeah, I don't mind waiting. Planning on ordering another pizza anyway." He says, before signaling a waitress.

I look over at where he's seated. He's still scrolling through his phone, probably waiting for their pizza.

I notice Vivian isn't at the table and I spot her at the far end of the restaurant receiving a phone call with so much gesticulation has she spoke. The universe is definitely in my favour.

"Okay, I'm gonna go over." I take a deep breath.

"Yeah you are." Hunter says teasingly with a smirk.

I playfully slap his arm, before walking over to Jake's table.

"Jake." I call out, trying to get his attention. But no response.

I dramatically clear my throat and call his name a little louder, "Jake." Still, no response. Is he really doing this?

"Jake!" I call his name again, snatching his phone from his hand, which finally gets his attention.

For a second he has a strange look on his face, but immediately brushes it off before I could even read it.

"Can we talk?" I ask him honestly.

He still doesn't say anything but continues to stare at me. What's wrong with this dude?

"Jake, can I talk to you?" I look over at Vivian, and it seems like she might be back any moment from now.

"Outside?" I add.

He sighs and then stands up from his seat, before we both walk out.

We decide to sit at one of the outside tables beside the Pizza Hut.

"What's going on with you lately Jake? Are we suddenly not talking again?" I ask him with a worried look.

"It's, it's complicated." He says, avoiding my eyes.

"What's complicated about you ignoring me? You just suddenly decided we're not speaking again. Why?" I ask him.

"I'm only trying to protect you Josie. Being around me, it's not safe for you, for any of us." He says.

"Protect me? From what? What could you possibly be protecting me from Jake? Why can't you tell me anything for once?!" I say with a slightly harsh tone as his words are starting to annoy me.

"Just trust me Josie. I..."

"Trust, trust, trust. That's what you've been saying since. Doesn't it occur to you that trust actually works both ways? Jake I've been trusting you all these while but you really can't trust me?" I ask him, waiting for his response.

He just looks away and remains silent.

"Yeah, that's what I thought." I stand up from the table and start to walk away.

Before I know it, an arm drags me back and I crash into a chest, a solid and well-built one if I might add.

I look up and see it's the jerk who can't trust someone. He just stares at me with those blue eyes of his but doesn't say anything.

"I really can't do this again Jake. If you can't talk to me anymore I guess that's fine. I can't force you to talk to me if I make you feel..."

I'm suddenly cut off by his lips on mine. My heart starts beating faster as his hands go around my waist. One of my hands unconsciously find it's way to his gorgeous soft hair as the other remains on his chest.

He's kissing me. Jake is kissing me. I know I shouldn't be enjoying this right now, but I am. His lips feel so soft and I don't feel like stopping anytime soon.

No Josie, he's mad at you and doesn't trust you.

I push him away from me before I get into it any further. For a few seconds we both stare at each other, breathing heavily.

"I really can't do this Jake. You can't just kiss me and expect us to start something else when we're not even done with where we were before. I can't be with someone that doesn't even trust me to tell me anything at all. This, this never happened." I say to him in a soft voice but meaning every word, even though I feel my heart sting a bit.

I turn around immediately, heading back to my table before my body says otherwise.

Seems like it's my turn to start avoiding him.

"Did something bad happen back there Josie? You really seemed in a hurry to get outta there. Are you alright?" I hear Hunter ask, breaking the silence in his car.

I guess he deserves an answer, seeing that I basically stormed off immediately after grabbing my bag from the pizza place without saying anything. I just wanted to be alone really, but then he stopped me and insisted on driving me home.

I look out the window and take a deep breath, thinking of what to even say to him. I don't think I want to talk about it.

"Hey, you don't have to tell me anything if you're not comfortable doing so." He says, before reaching for my hand and holding it firmly.

I turn towards him to give him a small smile and I watch his dimples come out on display as he smiles back at me. I love dimples.

"Thank you Hunter, for understanding." I say to him, gripping his hand a little bit tighter.

"It's alright. I guess someone else already stole my spot as your best friend." He says with a low tone as his eyes return to the road.

"You didn't choose to leave me Hunter, I know you would have stayed if you could. You found me now and that's all that matters."

"So I still have a chance at winning you back then?" He says with a smirk, looking at me for a second before turning back to the view in front of him.

"Definitely." I say with a chuckle and I see his dimples starting to show.

"That's right people! I'm back in business!" He shouts loudly, with his smile never leaving his face.

"So tell that guy he's got competition alright, I'm here to redeem my position as the humble best friend of Josie Allen. So that guy can suck it, it is a guy right?" He stops to ask, earning a laugh from both of us.

I nod my head response but still recovering from laughing so hard.

"Good, so he can suck it. I'm back baby!" He shouts as his epic ending and then turns to give me a blank look.

We both remain silent for a second before bursting into another round of laughter.

Almost reaching my apartment after a few rounds of laughter and lip singing to songs on the radio, I finally sit back calmly and enjoy the rest of the ride.

I look at Hunter for a second and remember how he used to be my best friend in the world, not that I knew that many people back then anyway. If he didn't get adopted, I wonder how it would have turned out.

Hm, I guess we'll never know.

"Yeah, that's my apartment right there." I say to Hunter before he pulls over in front of my place.

"Thanks again for the ride, you didn't have to." I say to him, pulling a strand of my hair behind my ears.

"Hey, I can't risk losing a point at being your best friend again so..." He says with a small smile, causing me to chuckle.

"Can I walk you to the door?" He leans closer and asks.

"Hunter, are you trying to me my best friend or a romantic boyfriend here?"

"Who says I can't be both?" He says with a smirk on his face, making me laugh again.

I hit him hardly with my bag before getting out of his car.

"I'll call you later!" He yells.

I walk to my apartment door as I search for my keys in my bag, still hearing the sound of Hunter's car engine from behind me.

Half way to the door, he yells again.

"Hey, Josie!" he calls out.
I turn around to hear what he has to say.

"Thanksgiving dinner, my place. What do you say?" He asks.

Oh yeah, Thanksgiving's just four days away. It totally slipped my mind. I usually have thanksgiving with Owen though...

"You're keeping a guy in suspense here Josie." I hear Hunter yell.

"Sure, I'll be there." I say with a smile. I'll have to tell Owen I'm not coming then.

"Cool, I'll pick you up then." He says, before pulling out of the drive way.

I pushed the thought aside and walked to my front door.

On reaching the door, I insert my key into the keyhole to unlock it.
Taking a step, something at the side of my door catches my attention.

A flower, carefully placed at the side of my doorway and some envelope beside it.

I suddenly found myself smiling uncontrollably at the thought of getting this from someone.

I never really receive flowers from anyone, so who could this even be from?

I bend down to grab the envelope to see what's inside. It's a letter, who still sends hand written letters these days?

"Maybe my secret lover, hehe." I say to myself with a smile on my face.

I open up the letter with butterflies starting to linger in my stomach at the thought of it being from a guy, but to my utmost dismay, it reads:

"La mejor celebración empieza con regalar flores."
I hope you haven't forgotten our thanksgiving traditions.
Well here's a surprise, it'll all be the same this year, just me and you little one. But this time, you'll be the dinner served.
P.s-I'm sure you missed me love.

I throw the letter away as my hands starts to shake and my heart feels like it's about to pop out. He knows where I live. He knows your house Josie!

Tears start to stream down my cheeks as I imagine the thought of even seeing him again. What am I going to do? Where am I going to hide from this monster? I need to get the hell out of this place.

I wrap my hands around my body and rock back and forth as I get soaked in my own tears.

After much thinking and crying, I grab my phone with shaky hands and call the first person that comes to mind.

"Hey..can you...can you come get me?" I manage to say, in between my sobs.

A/N:-Hi guys! It's Vanille.

The language written there is Spanish. Here's the translation: "The best celebration starts with gifting of flowers."

Who do you think she called?
Who's still on Team Jake here? I think I'm all for Hunter now lol.
Till the next update! Bye.
