chapter thirty-four

Liam Harrington

The last thing I was expecting, Katherine to say was her water broke. She had five weeks left, and my mind was running to what her Doctor had said during her checkup in April. Katherine was two and half weeks away from thirty-six weeks, which was not good odds for her or the babies. My head was on a swivel as I ran down the hallways trying to find Katherine’s doctor, or hell any doctor that was qualified to deliver my kids.

“Son?” My father caught my shoulders to stop myself from falling after my abrupt stop. “What’s going on?”

“Katherine is in labor, have you seen her doctor?” God, I was out of breath and scared out of my fucking mind.

“Yes, she’s at the front desk.” I was about to run over to her when my dad stopped me.

“What the hell! I’m not sure if you heard me, but Katherine is about to give birth!”

“Lionardo, would you take a breath, you’re red.” I rolled my eyes, but listened to the old bastard since I was short on time. “I was the worst aid for your mother when she was giving birth. Keep her calm, there’s nothing you can do to take her pain away.” I took another deep breath, before nodding. “Now go, I’ll find the others.” Without hesitation, I ran over to Katherine’s doctor forcefully turning her around.

“M-Mr. Harrington, is everything okay?” She stared at me wide-eyed. Clearly I just scared the hell out of her.

“Katherine’s water just broke.” As soon as I spoke her flustered manner disappeared to a serious expression.

“Jane, Emily, follow me.” The two nurses dressed in purple scrubs nodded following my lead back to Katherine’s room. The closer we got, the more audible Katherine cries of agony were becoming. They were crushing my heart. “Hi, Katherine, I see your girls have grown impatient.” Doctor Gardner tried to lighten the mood as she rushed to Katherine’s side, but she didn’t even crack a smile. Tears were streaming down her face beautiful face, as her head was tossed back, and her eyes were tightly shut.

“I’m here baby, I’m here.” I grabbed Katherine’s hand, lifting my free one to move her hair out of her face.

“Alright Katherine, I need you to lift your legs, Hun, so we can get ready to push.”

“Jesus Christ, it hurts!”

“I know baby, but you gotta lift your legs up, alright.” I did my best to get her into a comfortable upright position, as she brought her legs as close to her chest as she could get them.

“Atta girl. On my go we’re going to push, okay.” Katherine nodded her head, before turning to me, sniffling her nose that had become red at the tip.

“Please, don’t leave me.” She whispered. I immediately brought my lips to her forehead, grabbing her hands tightly.

“I’m not going anywhere love, ever.”

“Ready, Katherine. On three, give me a big push, okay.” Katherine inhaled a deep breath turning back towards the Doctor.

“One. Two. Three. Push mama, push.” I ignored the tingling pain Katherine’s grip was bringing to my hand, as she squeezed the hell out of it. “Good Katherine. Push again. I need a big one.”

“You’re doing great baby, you’re doing so good.”

“Good, one more push I can see the head. Push, Katherine, push.”

“AH!---” After Katherine let out the last push, I could hear loud crying.

"Ready to cut the umbilical cord, dad?" I brought my attention to the nurse who was cleaning off the small baby, bringing her to rest against Katherine’s chest.

"Yes." I smiled lightly, grabbing the scissors from the doctor, to cut the cord from the oldest one.

“Say hello to mommy and daddy.” The nurse spoke in a chipper tone. I could feel myself getting chocked up, as our daughter was wailing against Katherine’s chest. She’s so small. Katherine let out a few tears as she laughed, bringing her hand up to our daughter’s head, rubbing her palm against the top of her full head of hair.

“Alright, mama. Let’s push one more time, okay.”

“Come on baby, its almost over. You’re a trooper, mon amour.” Katherine lightly smiled as she gave her doctor her attention back. “Alright, Hun, push. Give me a big push.”

“Push baby.” Katherine squeezed my hand tightly as she let out for big pushes.

“Good girl, Katherine. I can see the head, keep pushing love, keep pushing.”

“There she is!” I cut the youngest's umbilical cord, as Katherine let out a huge exhalation, laying her head back against the pillows. Once she was cleaned up, the nurse rested our other little girl on Katherine’s chest, letting us have our moment before they were taken away. The eldest one had calm down, now holding onto Katherine’s index finger tightly in her small palm, while the younger one was still crying.

“They have blue eyes.” Katherine looked up at me smiling. “You’re genes totally killed mine.” I smiled, leaning down to get a better look at them.

“Super sperm, mon amour.” Katherine rolled her eyes, rubbing her thumb against the oldest one’s cheeks.

“Do we have names?” Doctor Gardner asked with a smile. “You two make absolutely beautiful children.”

“I can’t take all the credit, their mother is stunning.” Katherine looked up at me with a raised eyebrow.

“Look at you being modest.” I smirked. ”Nicolette Alaia Harrington, and Yasmine Lailli Harrington.”

“Beautiful.” One of the nurses came over to us, placing little hats on both of their heads.

“We’re going to take them for some checkups and monitoring, they are a bit under weight.” I didn’t want to part from them yet, but I knew this was necessary for their safety, which I was prioritizing over everything.

“Say bye-bye, to mommy and daddy, cuties.” The first nurse grabbed Nicolette from the right side, and the other grabbed Yasmine from the left, leaving out of the room to the hospital’s nursery.

“You did so good baby.” I kissed Katherine’s forehead. “So good.” Katherine turned to me with a calming smile on her face.

“Having you here made it somewhat easier.” She grabbed my hand, rubbing her thumb back and forth against my knuckles. “Sorry about your hand. Does it hurt a lot?”

“Baby, you just pushed two kids out of your vagina, who gives a shit about my hand.” Katherine and I both laughed softly, before bringing our attention to Doctor Gardner.

“I want to keep you here for at least a week and half, or possible two, to monitor you and the babies’ health. Though twins are more likely to be born prematurely, thirty-four weeks is early even for twins, and given your accident I want to make sure everything is okay.”

“Okay.” Katherine was quiet, as her eyes were looking everywhere except at Doctor Gardner.

“Don’t worry too much Katherine. As for right now, there’s nothing to worry about, and they seem to be breathing well on their own which is a good sign.”

“Alright.” Katherine gave Doctor Gardner a light smile.

“When can we see them?” I was extremely eager to hold my daughters, and just gaze at them.

“Lets give it a few hours, and I’ll let you know how the test are looking.” I nodded. “Alright mama, I’ll be back to check on you later, get some rest.” Doctor Gardner smiled at the two of us, before leaving out of the room. Katherine scooted over lightly in her bed, leaving room for me to sit on the edge.

“There’s going to be four girls in the house now. That’s so crazy.” I smiled, lacing my hand with Katherine’s.

“For now, that just means we get to keep trying until we get a boy.” Katherine hit my forearm, as I smirked.

“I’m not some baby machine, Harrington.” Leaning down to Katherine’s face, I pecked her lips with a genuine smile forming on my face.

“We’ll cross that bridge when we get there, yeah.” I tucked a piece of hair behind Katherine’s ear, smiling down at the love of my life. “God, I adore you.” Katherine smiled.

“You might just swindle me into another pregnancy if you keep this up.”

“Absolutely not, that off the table for at least five years.” I rolled my eyes, standing up from the bed.

“I’ll be back, I have some phone calls to make.”

“You’re seriously taking work calls?”

“No! Absolutely not, this is about the break in, I promise. I’m taking a leave from work for a bit, all architectural projects have been put on a halt, and my father is temping in for me at HE for the time being.” Katherine lips fell open.

“I’m meeting with an interior designer tomorrow to furnish the new house, we’ll be moved out my penthouse by the time you’re discharged.” I knew as Katherine bit her lip, she was stopping herself from saying something. “All I need from your baby is to rest, and focus on our daughters. Leave everything else to me.”

“You need to rest as well, I see the dark circles.”

“I’m fine.” I kissed Katherine forehead, as she adjusting her body in the bed for sleep. “I’ll be back later.”

“Be safe, please.”
