Harmony’s P.O.V

Adrian pulled up at the gas station and turned off the car. “I’ll pay if you want me to,” I tell him. “No it’s ok, I’ll do it,” Adrian says. “Nope, I said I’ll pay, I’ll be right back,” I told him, and before he could argue with me I went inside.

“twenty on the number seven,” I told the lady. “Would you like your receipt back?” the woman asks. “Yes, please”

She hands me the receipt and I head towards the isles where they keep all their chips. I grab hot Cheetos, Doritos, hot fungi rings, and most importantly a bag of popcorn. Next, I headed over to the candy aisle.

I grabbed skittles, sour patch kids, reeses, snickers, jolly ranchers, and most importantly, gum. I went up to the freezers and pulled out two sweet teas for Adrian and me.

I went up to the cash register to pay for all my items. “Wow, that’s a lot of stuff.” the lady says. “Yeah, my friend and I are going to catch up on a lot of stuff,” I tell her. “Oh, I thought he was your boyfriend.” the lady says. “Oh… um no, no, we’re just friends” I tell her, My cheeks probably growing red. “What makes you think that.” I ask “he’s been staring at you since you entered the store.” she says, beckoning her head towards Adrian. “Oh” is all I say.

"Your total is going to be $10.27,” she says, putting everything in a black bag. I take out my credit card from my wallet and swipe it and put my pin down. Once I’m done I put my card back in my wallet and grab the bag. “Have a great afternoon” I tell her, still embarrassed by what she had said.

"You ok,” Adrian asks when I get inside his car. “Um...yeah, sorry it was a little hot in there,” I tell him. “Mhm,” he says, totally not believing my lie but doesn’t push it. I put on my seatbelt and Adrian starts driving.

20 minutes later Adrian is pulling up in my driveway, we get out and head inside. My mom wasn’t here, she usually goes grocery shopping on Thursdays.

When we entered we saw my brother Collin on the couch watching some old football matches.” Hey guys” collin said “hey” both Adrian and I said together. “We’re going to be in my room” My mom or my brothers don’t mind Adrian being in my room, they all know that we're best friends and he has a crush on Isabel, but if it were any other guy yeah they would probably scare him away.

”you want something before I leave, I bought snacks,” I tell him. “No, it’s ok, I’m supposed to be on a diet,” he says and I just snort. “Yeah, right,” I tell him. “Hey, that’s not very nice.” I just laugh.

“Okay, mom should be back any minute. I’ll tell her Adrians here. “Mk, thanks,” I said. It was 3:38 and I had to go to work at five so we had to come up with ideas quickly.

We got to my room and we sat on the bed. My room was like a typical girls room. I had violet walls with a medium-sized bed in the middle. I had two windows on each side of my bed and I also had two nightstands as well filled with pictures of my family and a picture of Adrian and me.

“Ok, do you have any idea of how I can ask her Friday?” Adrian asked. “no not really. You?” I asked. “I was kinda thinking about doing a dance for her before the game started and you know have the cheerleaders walk by her and hold up a sign that says, WILL YOU BE MY GIRLFRIEND.,” he says, while I just sat there with my face scrunched up.

“Absolutely not,” I said. “This has to be something special that she has to remember for her entire life,” I tell him. “Ok, think about it this way, what’s your idea of someone asking you to be their girlfriend,” he asks, and I just smile.

“When the guy asks me, I want it to be special. I want them to ask me to hang out with them and do a picnic and talk all night until the sky is dark and you can only see the stars. Then he can ask me while we watch the stars above us.” I tell him, smiling.

“Oh, that’s cute, let’s keep thinking,” he says. “Yeah” is all I say.

It was now 3:57 already and we still hadn’t come up with anything. Adrian was laying on my bed singing, more like trying to sing Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer. “Shut up you’re hurting my ears, plus it’s not Christmas, so why are you singing Rudolph the rednosed reindeer?” I ask him. “Because it’s never too early to have Christmas spirit,” he says. “Whatever,” I tell him.

I just sometimes don’t understand how in the world Adrian has so much energy.

“Oh, I got it,” I say jumping up and down like a 5-year-old. “ You should ask her during the football game. Like when half time comes, the football players say they have an important announcement to make and you start saying nice and special stuff about her then as you’re done, the guys turn around and each of them has a letter spelling out ‘Isa will you be my girlfriend’ and the cheerleaders would cheer on!” I said in one breath.

“I love that idea, we’re going to set it up after school tomorrow so you have to stay afterward,” he said. “Mk, I will.” I said

”k I have to go home see ya at work Harm.” he said. “K, bye loser,” I shouted as he closed my door and headed outside to my driveway where his car was. After Adrian had left I decided to take a small nap. It was 4:00 now so I had at least 30 minutes left. I closed my eyes and I drifted to sleep.

I woke up and the first thing I checked was my phone. It was 4:40 p.m. and I had to be at work in twenty minutes. I quickly got up and threw my uniform on and I brushed my teeth and hair as quick as I could and grabbed my phone and stuffed it into my mini book bag and ran out of the house.

I arrived 2 minutes before my shift started, which was good because I could already be hearing my boss say that if it happens again I’m going to end up without a job. When I opened the kitchen doors. I spotted Adrian talking to one of the employees that work with us.

“Hey Adri,” I said.” Hey babe,” he said. I groaned “not again” he started laughing. “Hey Harmony,” Alex said, he’s one of our co-workers. “Sup Alex,” I say, “How’s your treatment going, do you need anything else cause you know I’ll help you, all you have to do is ask,” he said. “it’s going great but no it’s ok to thank you though Alex,” I said. I didn’t want to continue this conversation.

When I was 12, I was diagnosed with cancer and at first, we didn’t believe it, I think the only reason I got cancer was that I was left in the cold streets when I was a baby before Rose found me. Ever since then my she had to pay for my medication. I told her not to worry about it anymore. So I got a job and I paid for my medications. I usually go every Monday and Tuesday every two weeks to the hospital to have a weekly check-up. The only people that know I have cancer are Adrian, my mom, my brothers, and Alex cause he overheard us talking about it once.

“Harmony, go take orders in the front register.” My boss said. “Yes ma’am” I put on my apron and headed towards the register.

As soon as I got to the register I started turning it on, I sensed someone walks up in front of me. “Welcome to Little brews coffee shop. What can I get for you” I said, still not looking up. My head shot up when I heard an all too familiar voice, and of course, it was Elijah.

He still didn’t notice me since he was looking up at the menu. “Ummm… I’m kinda new in town so what would you recommend for me?” he asked, still not looking away from the menu.

”umm... yes, I personally would recommend our famous glazed donuts and our caramel iced coffee. It’s my personal favorite but go ahead and choose what you would like.” I said to Elijah nervously.

”Sounds good, let me get one of your famous glazed donuts with a medium caramel iced coffee,” he said with a bored tone finally looking down to get his money. I punched in his order.” okay your total going to be $5.22. Is that gonna be in cash or card” I asked him

“Cash,” he says, handing me the money, but stopped in the middle of handing me the money. He just stood there just looking at me.

He realized what he was doing and quickly handed me a ten-dollar bill. I grabbed it and gave him his change back. “Your order will be brought to you” I simply said. He walked away and I didn’t see him for the rest of the day, since we had customers constantly coming in and out every minute.

Once I was done with my shift I headed towards the kitchen to grab my stuff when Adrian came over to my side. “Hey harm are you going to need a ride home,” Adrian asked “ No I’m going to walk it’s only a 15-minute walk,” I said, “plus you need to go grab the supplies we need for tomorrow,” I said while taking off my apron and putting my hoodie back on. “Oh ok yeah, I do well see ya tomorrow. Text me when you’re home ok.” He said, giving me a kiss on my cheek, “Mk, I will.” I said as I left the coffee shop.

I started walking home and since it was almost eleven, it was pitch black. I had no problem with it. I wasn’t scared of the dark or anything. And I mean I shouldn’t cause there’s really nothing to be scared of. I learned that the hard way.

I was walking home and I saw that one of the small simple restaurants was looking for a singer. There were flyers right beside the door. I grabbed one but I wasn’t going to apply or anything. I was just curious about it.

When I got home I went straight to my room. I quickly changed and headed towards the bathroom to brush my teeth. When I was done, I put my hair in a bun and I quickly texted Adrian and plugged in my phone. I got on my bed and as soon as I got on I shut my eyes, and I guess I was that tired because I quickly drifted to sleep.
