Mud

Mud has a very special taste. The flavour itself, so very rich, doesn't really stick. Each mouthful different, there's just no real signature to it. The texture on the other hand...

Katie sighed, as she let the spoon drop back into the soup. Her mother looked over, concern etched into her brows.

"Everything alright, sweetie?" she asks.

"Anyone need roughing up?" Katie's brother wants to know.

And Katie just can't let them know. That today's soup tastes like mud. That yesterday's spaghetti choked her. That chewing bread leaves her jaw tired.
Because, if she does, they still can't do anything about it.

But they will worry.

So she shakes her head, stands up, and gets creative.

"No," she says, "It's nothing, really."

As she collects her tableware, she realises it lacks an impact.

"Just some school stuff."

As she turns back after placing her stuff by the sink, her brother is eating again, though her mother's brow remains lined.

"Just this project I'm having some trouble with."

"Ah," her mother breathes, and the lines disappear after a final eyebrow shrug.

Another evening down.

----

Back upstairs, Katie chokes up. She lied to them again. Not really, she's really got a school project she's having trouble with, but that's just because she can't focus on it, and the reason she can't focus on it isn't because it's boring or anything like that, but because she really can't focus on anything, because focusing on something, anything at all, might make her happy, and then, when it's over, she won't be happy anymore, and that's unbearable, and awful and terrible and... sad.

So, instead, she searches the internet for symptoms of drug abuse, and decides she's a junkie.

She's gonna play the part, and she's gonna be good at it, and maybe she won't ever have to stop. She'll be happy. Without end, this time.

Lesson 1: Doesn't hand in homework.

Logging off the school network hurts like hell. She can taste the oncoming disappointment.

But withdrawals are like that.

Sandra Estrada: I loved every minute of it and I thank my lucky stars that brought me to the story, it's been a whirlwind of emotions, plot twist after plot twist but I never got tired of them. Abby and Kade's story is a hard one to understand but once you're submerged in their story and love, you can't help but...

OpheliaJones: This story took a different kind of spin on the "normal girl lives with definitely not normal guy" plot. The plot points of Frey's father, Liam's family, and Frey's view of Liam's world were good to read. She did not fall in love with him in the first couple weeks. Their lives were not smooth in ...

LouiseJ2: I enjoyed the detail you went into with regards to the case. It made the UNSUB appear believable. The crisis in the middle of the story was my favorite part, very dramatic but not over the top. I feel like sometimes pairings can be overdone but I liked that some of the relationships were a little...

jessiehs: This was absolutely amazing. I loved how it went back and forth between perspectives. I actually cried at the end I was so happy. This was amazing. I can't even think of another word to describe it. Thank you for writing his.

csimesser1: If you love a biker romance with a lot of drama then this book is for you. Some of the plot was very predictable but there was plenty of twists to keep you reading. I could not stop reading it

sujitha nair: What's so distinct about this story was that it could easily be real. Praveena can be your classmate, neighbor or that girl you saw at the coffee shop today. The important decisions she makes and the dilemmas she faces, remind us of our own twisted lives.

Laraine Smith: My only suggestion on the grammar is to use www.grammarcheck.net. I have it bookmarked on Google Chrome. I see myself in the determination in this beautiful story! I have Cerebral Palsy, and I have dreams that I have been working hard for, too! The humor made me laugh!

dd1226: I love reading about other countries and I think this story about Cambodia after Polpot creates awareness of the tragedy that happened there and the actions of the U.N. to hold elections. The heroine of the story is easy to relate to, a modern, middleaged woman looking for an adventure, wanting t...

Isha Chaudhari: Amazing book ...the most beautiful part is the kind of relationship Carla has with Peter. However, the epilogue was the one that surprised me the Most....Carla getting married to Peter....when in the book her relationship is mostly discussed with Ridian. Was a bit confusing thus.Lovable book that ...

Jessica: I loved the title of this story, and that is what got me hooked. But reading this from beginning to end, it was amazing. PaulSenkel: If you like Arthur C. Clarke's Odyssey, especially The Final Odyssey, then you will probably also enjoy this book.
