Chapter 2: If You Love Me Let Me Go

This is gospel for the fallen ones
Locked away in permanent slumber
Assembling their philosophies
From pieces of broken memories

Phil Lester, age 13, stood on the roof of a 7 story building, staring down at the people just thinking of those who’ve taken their own lives for something as stupid as bullying. He thought of how he was about to do the same.

Their gnashing teeth and criminal tongues conspire against the odds
But they haven’t seen the best of us yet

Phil thought of how he had felt when his harassment had first started. He had felt so confident only to be torn down by everyone he knew.

If you love me let me go
If you love me let me go
’Cause these words are knives that often leave scars
The fear of falling apart

Phil thought of the note he had left his little sister Emma. The only one who truly cared for him. Their parents simply ignored Phil. Pretended he simply didn’t exist.

This is gospel for the vagabonds,
Ne’er-do-wells, insufferable bastards
Confessing their apostasies
Led away by imperfect impostors

Phil remembered the kids at his school. They beat him up in alley’s and beat him up with words at school. Made him feel like he was nothing.

Don’t try to sleep through the end of the world
Bury me alive
’Cause I won’t give up without a fight

Phil also remembered how confident Emma had made him feel. How her words kept him going. Emma was his savior and now she was dead. She had hung herself on the ceiling fan in the bathroom.

If you love me let me go
If you love me let me go
’Cause these words are knives that often leave scars
The fear of falling apart
And truth be told, I never was yours
The fear, the fear of falling apart

Oh, the fear of falling apart
Oh, the fear, the fear of falling apart

Oh (This is the beat of my heart)
The fear of falling apart

Oh (This is the beat of my heart)
The fear of falling apart

Oh (This is the beat of my heart)
The fear of falling apart

Oh (This is the beat of my heart)
The fear of falling apart

Phil closed his eyes and took a deep breath. It finally hit him what he was about to do. A scream and voices were heard from below. Siren’s in the distance. He made a final decision on his final choice. He had nothing him back. Phil was one step away from freedom. From happiness.

He shifted his foot not even an inch before he heard someone shout "WAIT!" behind him. Phil jumped, almost stumbling off the roof on accident with his clumsy self. He felt a hand on his wrist. He turned around. A boy his age, or maybe a few years younger stared at him. He had short brown curly hair and soft brown eyes full with worry and anxiousness. His cheeks previously tear-stained.

"What are you doing?" The boy asked in horror. "I.. I-I don't-" Phil stuttered in utter shock. What was this beautiful boy doing? "Come down from there." The boy said and lightly tugged Phil's wrist and they were face to face on the roof as the sound of the sirens got louder. "Are you okay?" The boy asked, scanning Phil's body in concern. "I..I guess." Phil said almost above a whisper. "Come on. The last thing you need is the police swarming you. Let's go." The boy said and his hand slid into Phil's, as he led them to the door where Phil had taken to get on the roof in the first place.

Phil didn't say a thing. He was shell-shocked that someone actually stopped him. They went through the back exit of the building and walked hand in hand to an unknown place.. well, at least unknown to Phil.
