Chapter 29 : Is it a crime? part 4

"What?!” I said standing up. “Do you think I’m crazy or something?”

“What? no, it’s just, hearing you talk about your life so so casual as if it weren’t fucked up just made me angry.

“Well I’m ok, I don’t need a shrink.” Isaac got up and held my hands.

“You are so strong, but You went through being physically and emotionally abused by your family, you were shunned by your mother your whole life and eventually kicked out. You were sexually harassed by the kids at your school and you got knocked up and the guy that you loved throw you to the curd to fend for yourself, and now this...

I opened my mouth to say something, anything. but I couldn’t.

“I’m fine,” I said slipping my hands out of his grasp and string to keep back the tears, then my lip started to quiver. he took my chin in his thumb and forefinger.

" (My heart), I would die if you did something to yourself.” It was a simple sentence but it got me to brack down. after all, he was right, that day I saw Michal again I contemplated killing myself,

I hated that he was right.

My family always made it known that God was our therapist and that was all the therapy that we needed. Isaac hugged me as I cried.

1 week later...

Today was judgement day, the day that everybody has been waiting for. Miles’s parents had a sit down with an interval the other day and I’m waiting for it on my phone while Isaac is driving.

“Mrs. Gray Mr. Gray, could you please tell us whether if you think your son is guilty or not?”

“We named our son Miles because we knew that he would go far in life and he did-.”

“They’re literally not even answering questions,” I said shutting off my phone.

“If they answered any of the interviewer’s questions they would unintentionally be admitting whether or not he is guilty in some way,” Isaac said.

“Ugh, it’s making me feel bad for Miles,” I said rubbing my forehead, Isaac took his eyes off the road and looked at me.

“I mean because his parents care about him so little that they would let him do such horrible things.”

“Oh,” Isaac said with a sigh of relief.

The Jury walks into the room and it becomes so silent that you could hear a pin drop.

“Were you all able to reach a verdict?”

“We the jury find the defendant responded follows count 1 of the charge the defendant Miles Gray guilty of third-degree murder.” When the judge said that I felt myself breathe, I looked over and saw the families of those other girls, they looked relieved too.

This girl and I made eye contact, I don’t think I remember her name but I do know that she was Miles’s last victim before me. I smiled at her and she smiled back, she was so beautiful, she had dark brown hair that cascaded down her back and long eyelashes, dark brown eyes that sparkled in the courtroom light, a soft dimpled chin and a clear face.

Miles was found guilty on all counts and that night I slept like a baby.

December 14

4:00 am

I wake super early in the morning because Isaac wakes up at 5:00 am for his morning workout with Lovey.

I hate this, I hate this so much

“What kind of crazy person am I marrying? for him to wake up this early, thair is absolutely no reason for anyone to wake up at this time,” I mumble while getting up, and walking to my car to get Isaac’s birthday present.

When Miles was convicted the media went crazy, some people even put the pieces together on how Isaac and I fall in love, But I truly don’t care, The day Miles was put in that jail cell was the day my life started being mine again, I don’t want to think about Miles in any capacity, I want him to be like a dream, a very bad dream that I finally woke up from.

I start taking therapy, it’s not that bad, I get to say whatever I would like to, I can get everything off my chest. My therapist really did help me cope with some of the sadness I was feeling, before when I was sad I got very sad, to the point where I would think about dying but now, it doesn’t feel like that anymore.

After I was done wrapping his present but I know he’ll love it, I cook his favourite childhood food Mashawi, his mom taught me how to make it for this specific day, I have been preparing for this for months now, and I have perfected the art of Mashawi.

Isaac’s POV

I wake up at 5:00 am to the smell of Mashawi, I have to be going crazy in some way, my mom only makes that and she's not even here... I think. I go downstairs and I see Rowan Lovey and Erin taking pictures.

"What are you guys doing?"They look back at me like deers caught in headlights, then she almost looks like she remembers something, Rowan puts Erin in his babysit, runs over to the fridge and gets out a big box, she opens it and pulls out a cake.

Oh no

"Happy birthday." Rowan makes a face that says I know you hate this but you can't say anything because our kids are here.

She's evil.

"Happy birthday daddy!" Lovey says with a big smile.

"Thank you Lovebug," I said picking her up and glaring at Rowan and having her smile at me.

I genuinely don't like birthdays, I don't know what it is, but a birthday with all of them was one of the best, especially because last year was kind of a disaster.

After he ate food and cake Rowan took me aside, leading me to the living room. She lets go of my hand and picks up something on the couch and give's it to me.

"What is it?"

"Open it," She says with that same smile, I look at the present and then her.

"I don't trust it."

"Ugh fine I'll open it," she said taking the present out of my hand and ripping open the wrapping paper. It was a picture of 2 frames, Rowan handed them to me once I read them my eyes widened, adoption papers for Lovey and a Lastname change. I started to smile, I couldn't help it, I looked at Rowan and I knew she was it for me, she has become my world and I can't imagine living a life without her.

"I love you." When I said that her smile become brighter. I through the frames on the couch and hugged her, then kissed her, she looked up at me and said.

"How does it feel to be an old man?" She said with a smirk, and my smile fell.
