Chapter 4

“M-m-me?” I said weakly.

“Yes you. You deaf or something?” I stood up straighter.

“Sir, I am only an intern. I am not sure that this is in my job description.” Ross wasn’t even looking at me anymore, just going through some paperwork.

“Oh, did I forget to mention that we are giving you a full time job now. No longer an intern. Throw a party or something.” Ross was now just walking down the wall, with me jogging to keep up.

“Why me? Sarah is much more qualified or anyone else in this building.” Ross stared me straight in the eye.

“We are giving this Sofia girl a chance to prove herself and I offered you up so you could get one as well. You and I both know that you aren’t the most popular around here. No one trusts you. If you can do this, people will know that you can do important things.” I was shocked. That was the most honest anyone has ever been with me, except for bullies.

“Thank you sir. I won’t let you down.” His normally straight face lifted into a smile.

“That’s my boy.”

Sofia Phoenix POV

“Girls!!” We all rushed over and hugged each other.

“Sofia!! We were scared!!” I started stroking there hair and making calming sounds. Like you do for a baby.

“No, no it’s ok. I’m here now and won’t leave you again. Ok.”

“Ok.” We stayed like that for a long time before someone cleared their throat behind us. We reluctantly got up.

“Hello I’m Officer Ross Smith and this is Officer Patrick Walsh. Patrick here is going to be with you at all times Ms. Phoenix to make sure you are taking care of these girls.”

“But Sofia already does a great job!” Summer burst out.

“I know, but we want her to be amazing, so Patrick is coming with you.” Patrick had short cut bright red hair and was as skinny as a stick. No muscles were on him, no FAT was on him. He looked scared and nervous, kinda like a baby.

“This baby is being put in place to keep me in check?” I questioned, probably not nicely, but...

“Yes, this OFFICER is being put in place to keep you in check.”

“Ok, whatever. Let’s go home girls. You are already late for school.” Did I forget to mention that the police decided to keep us OVER NIGHT!

“Your forgetting your mother.” Officer Smith said pointing toward the corner. There she was, staring at the wall. Who every brought her here, I feel sorry for them and for me. I sighed.

“Come on girls. Let’s get Livia.” After a sad amount of time, we got Livia to move and walk home with us. Then I noticed that baby walking behind us.

“What do you think your doing?”

“I’m coming home with you.” I placed my hands on my hips.

“I don’t have the money to feed a stray puppy. Go back and monitor us behind the computer screen or something.” Moving my hand in a shooing motion, but he didn’t move. It looked like he wanted to though.

“I have been put in place to watch you Ms. Phoenix. There are people who are listening from microphones that are being placed in you home, but I am ordered to be present with you at all times.” After saying he released a breath like that took effort to say. I rolled my eyes.

"Of course. I'm not feeding you though."
