Chapter 1
It was a beautiful Monday in a small coastal town near Kochi. The town had its charm with breathtaking shores, especially at sunrises and sunsets. There was a small post office beside the beach with one clerk and a postman. The office was opened and the postman arrived to see the posts to be delivered.
He took all of them and started delivering them one by one. He was a happy man with no family and leading a normal life. He delivered all the letters except one. He wanted to have a tea a reached near the address of the last letter. He parked his cycle in front of a tea shop and was having tea. He was looking at the house that he had to deliver his last letter to and suddenly a woman came out of the building and left in hurry. He could not reach her and went to the doorstep of the house to deliver the letter. He knocked on the door said, “You have a letter.” A voice of a little girl said from the inside “I am coming in five minutes.”
He waited and after five minutes he knocked again “See, it is already late. My duty is finished and I have to go home.” Again the little girl voice said “Uncle just five more minutes. Please don’t leave the letter and go.” He waited five more minutes and before he could angrily knock on the door, the little girl opened the door and searched for the postman. He realised that she was blind.
He touched her hand and handed over the letter. As he was about to leave, she asked him “Uncle, will you read it for me?” He said “I don’t have time to read. Ask your mom to read it who just went out.” She said “She is not my mom. She is our maid and she will come again in the morning.”
He got irritated but her innocence made him take the letter and start reading. He read all the details of the letter that her elder brother wrote her from Kochi. She felt happy and thanked him. He smiled and left for home.
Like this, every Monday he used to go to her home and read the letters. The postman and the little girl became very good friends. He used to give her chocolates and she used to give him the items made at home. Postman was very happy that he had been visiting that little girl and helping her out.
Again on a Monday, he went to her home to read the letter but she was not there. He had no clue what happened. The maid was also not there and no one could tell where she went. He kept the letter at the doorstep and returned with disappointment and regret that something happened to her.
The affection and bonding that built-in these days made him miss her so much but he could not do anything. The next Monday also he took the letter to her home only to find no one. Again he kept the letter at the doorstep and left. After six weeks and six letters at the doorstep, he went to her house with one more letter.
This time there were no old letters at the doorstep that he had left. He knocked on the door and the little girl opened the door. The postman’s face was sparkling with happiness. She came to him and “ Uncle, give me the letter. I can read now. I have eyes. I can see everything. I can see you.”
He felt very happy that she could see. Though she could see, he insisted that he would read the letter and read it for her. But she immediately realised that the voice was different.
The tea stall owner right in front of her house was watching all this wiping his tears. He knew that she was talking to a new postman. Her postman friend was having tea there with blind glasses.
