Chapter 30 – Kitty
“Did you guys hear that Lisa was a drug addict?” Jude asked us. We were playing Go Fish in the library again.
I exchanged a glance with Jonah and Aiden.
“Yeah, I heard that,” Aiden said, his voice slightly shaking.
“Is that why she hasn’t been at school all week?” Blake asked.
“I guess so,” I said.
I looked over at Blake. I was dying to ask him what Austin had on him. I just didn’t know how to address the question.
“How are you, Blake?” Aiden asked as he looked over at the small boy.
“Good,” Blake answered as he looked at Aiden suspiciously.
“No one is giving you any trouble?” Jonah asked.
Blake turned pale, and his whole body tense up. “What kind of trouble?” He asked, his voice trembling.
“What is going on?” Jude asked as he looked between Blake to Jonah and Aiden.
“Is Austin making things hard for you?” I asked.
Blake looked at me. “How do you know about that?” he asked, his voice quiet and small.
“Know what?” Jude requested.
“What does Austin have on you?” Jonah asked.
“I can’t tell you,” Blake said, turning his glance to the table.
“Let us help you, Blake,” Aiden said.
“No,” Blake said harshly as he looked up and stared at Aiden dead in the eye. “This is my problem. I will deal with it myself.”
“So you're just going to let Austin walk all over you,” I said annoyed.
“Yes,” Blake muttered as he began to look at the ground again.
“Please Blake,” Jonah pleaded. “We can’t help you unless you tell us what is going on.”
“Maybe I don’t want your help,” Blake growled.
“Blake, whether Austin is blackmailing you with can’t be that bad,” Aiden told him.
“You wouldn’t understand,” Blake whispered.
“Blake, please,” I said. “Let us help you.”
“Just drop it!” Blake yelled. His outburst caused people around to stare at us. “Just leave it alone.”
Before we could ask him any more questions, Blake got out of his chair and ran from the library.
“Blake!” Jonah cried after him as he stood up to follow his best friend.
Aiden grabbed hold of Jonah’s arm. “Let him go, Jonah,” Aiden told him.
“Can somebody please tell me what is going on?” Jude demanded angrily.
I looked at both Jonah and Aiden. They both sat silently, eyes on the table. I looked back at Jude, “Well, I guess it's time you knew what has been going on.”
“Well, thank you,” Jude said, dryly.
“Millie and I are working together to take down Angelica,” I told Jude. “We have been doing this for that last two months. Aiden and Jonah have started helping us.”
“What does this have to do with Blake?” Jude asked.
“Austin is blackmailing Blake,” Aiden told Jude. “We're trying to get Blake to tell us what Austin has on him.”
“What could Austin possibly have on Blake?!” Jude gasped. “He's the most innocent person I know.”
“That was my exact reaction,” I said as a small smile appeared on my face.
“Whatever it is, it must be bad,” Jonah said as he looked at all of us. “I have never seen Blake react like that before.”
“According to Millie, Austin believes it could ruin Blake’s life,” I told them.
“Whatever happens, we have to stick by Blake,” Jude said.
“Of course, we will, he's our friend,” Aiden told Jude.
“I mean it Aiden,” Jude said. “We can’t have a repeat of what happened with Maya.”
“I can’t lose another friend,” Jonah added quietly.
“So we all agree,” I concluded looking at each of my friends. “That no matter what Austin has on Blake, we'll continue to stand up for him.”
“Agreed!” the three boys chorused.
