Chapter 36 - Tabby
I was nervous as I entered the school. It was my first day back at school since I had collapsed in the locker bay.
“Hey, stupid!” someone yelled behind me. I knew who it was before I even turned around.
“What do you what Angelica?” I asked as I turned to look at my so called friend.
Angelica always managed to look beautiful. She was thin, with curves in the right places. Her hair was long and curled. She seemed like a model from a fashion magazine that teenage girls tried to look like. I, however, knew from experience that behind her physical beauty there was extreme crudeness.
When we were young, Angelica was kinder, selfless, and caring. You could tell her anything, and she would’ve taken it to the grave. I would have trusted her with my life. I loved her like a sister.
Then something changed. It happened so slowly I didn’t even notice at first. It was until Angelica pulled me aside and announced her plans to ditch the others that I really saw how far she had come.
The kind and caring girl I had once known was gone and in her place was a selfish brat who only cared about appearances and herself.
Angelica looked me up and down. “Wow, you look sick,” she said.
“What do you what Angelica?” I repeated.
“I just need to make sure that you are keeping your part of the deal,” she told me.
“I can’t Angelica,” I told her quietly
“What did you just say?” She asked in a mocking tone. “Speak up Tabitha.”
“I can’t do it anymore,” I shouted. Some of the people walking past just turned to look at us curiously. “I am done.”
“Fine,” Angelica smirked, “I will just tell everyone the truth.”
“Do it. Nothing can be as bad as this,” I told her.
“Are you sure?” Angelica smirked. “Are you sure you want everyone to find out that you are dumb.”
I felt my body go numb. I was falling apart. I was so close to cracking, and the worse part was that Angelica knew it.
“What would Aiden say?” Angelica asked, her mocking tone stronger than ever.
“I don’t care what Aiden thinks,” I lied. “I don’t like him anymore.” I was trying hard to keep my voice firm, but it was shaking.
Angelica looked at me in pity. “Oh poor little Tabby, if only she knew that Aiden liked her back. I do wonder how he would feel about you though if he found out the truth. In my opinion, he would move on to someone of a higher intelligence like Katarina maybe.”
I turned red. “What are you talking about?”
“What you didn’t know,” she said in an over the top fake censored voice. “Aiden has a crush on you. Even Maya knew, she wrote about in her diary.”
“How would you know what Maya wrote in her diary?” I demanded.
“Because I read it before I posted the pages around the school,” Angelica told me, she used a tone of voice to suggest she was bored. “Keep up Tabitha.”
The colour drained from my face. “You posted Maya’s diary around the school!” I yelled angrily. “Why the hell would you do that?”
“To turn her friends against her,” Angelica told me in the same bored tone. “You really are stupid.”
“Is that way she did it then?” I asked.
“Did what?” Angelica asked. “You will need to be more specific.”
“Killed herself?” I said. “Did she kill herself because you turned the only friends she had left against her?”
“I think so,” Angelica said emotionless. “I don’t really care.”
“How can you not care?” I demanded. “She took her own life because of what we did to her.”
“She was selfish, weak, and a coward. Suicide is a coward’s way out.” Angelica told me.
“She wasn’t selfish!” I growled at Angelica. “You’re the selfish one. You only care about yourself.”
“You’re right Tabitha, I am selfish,” Angelica told me. “You will do as I say or there will be consequences.”
She glared at me. “Do we have a deal?”
“Deal,” I murmured.
