Chapter Six

After staying up late to cramp a weekend’s worth of homework in just a few hours, she didn’t get much sleep, paired with the constant thoughts that invaded her mind. Monday dragged by as she couldn’t seem to get the thoughts out of her head. She knew it was time to execute the second revenge.

After leaving her last class, she didn’t go home. She went to the beauty store where she purchased a wig with medium length red hair, and a large pair of sunglasses. She put them on and wore them out of the store. Before getting into her car, she took the tire iron from the trunk and laid it on the floor board of the back seat.

Leaving town, she headed in the direction of Pendleton. Locating the high school, she drove by it, then up and down David’s street, waiting to see him. Chuck is the one who hurt her the most, she saved him for last for a reason. After an hour of driving, she seen David, walking down the street towards his house.

Suddenly nervous, her hands were shaking as she pulled up along the curb beside him and rolled the window down. “Excuse me…” She said.

Leaning over some, he looked at her as he approached the car. “Do I know you? You look familiar.”

“No, I just wanted to ask you how to get to a place called ‘Bottoms up’?”

“Yeah, I can tell you.” He said.

“I’ll tell you what, if you show me personally, I will give you this.” She held up a twenty dollar bill. “I promise I will bring you right back.”

Nodding, he reached for the door handle. As he sat down and shut the door, she pulled away from the curb, nearly spinning her tires. Her hands tightened on the steering wheel as her anger grew, having him beside her. Pointing, he gave her directions.

Stopping at a stop sign, she reached down and rubbed his knee and looked at him. “Why don’t we just forget about ‘Bottoms Up’, and go somewhere that we can be alone.”

He looked at her wondering what made her suggest that, but he was a teenage boy who didn’t know how to say no. “Ok. We can go this way.” He pointed again, reaching his hand up to feel the hair on the red wig, then reached down and put his hand on her knee. Slowly, he ran his hand up her leg, all the way to her crotch. Instantly her blood was boiling and she couldn’t wait to get him out of her car.

Ignoring his directions, she drove the seven miles out of town in the opposite direction of Newport, to find the trail head. Taking the dirt road, she drove for a mile before turning down a trail, driving as far as she could go without getting stuck in the snow. Turning the car off, she put the keys in her coat pocket and opened her door.

“What are you doing?” David asked her.

“Come on, get out.” She said.

“Why, don’t you know it’s winter out there?”

“Are you serious? Haven’t you ever had sex in the snow? It’s the bomb.” Looking directly at him, she licked her lips and ran her eyes over his groin then back up to his. “If you get out now, I’ll give you a blow job.”

He smiled and opened his door. She waited until he was out and shut he door before locking them all except the driver’s door. Reaching into the back seat, she grabbed the tire iron and hid it behind her back as she walked towards him. Leaning against the front of her car, he unbuttoned and unzipped his pants, pulling his penis out.

Standing before him, she reached up and pulled her sunglasses off, then her wig. “Do you recognize me now?” She said and watched as his eyes widened and his mouth dropped.

“Riley? We thought you were…” He said as he stood up straight.

“Dead?” She finished his sentence. “Well, you didn’t kill me. So now, it’s my turn.” She said as she threw the wig and sunglasses on the hood of the car.

Pulling her arm forward, she exposed the tire iron. He lunged at her and tackled her to the ground. She swung the tire iron towards him, hitting him in the back as he pinned her down. Leaning up, he punched her in the face, and fought with her to gain control of the tire iron. With her hand that was holding the tire iron pinned against the ground, she clenched her other fist and punched him with all she had.

He fell back just enough for her to bring one knee up between them and push him away with her leg. She was still left holding the tire iron. “Your friends can’t help you now.” She said as she stood and squared him off, holding the tire iron above her shoulder, ready to swing. “You guys raped me and should have killed me. You left me pregnant. I’ve already repaid Aaron. Now it’s your turn to die.”

His eyes widened as he realized his accident was her fault. Just then, he lunged at her again, but she swung the tire iron, connecting with the side of his head. Reaching up to run his fingers across the point of impact, he drew his hand back to see blood. It seemed to infuriate him more. Again, he lunged at her but she struck him again, knocking him to his knees.

“This one is for Hannah.” She said and struck him again, splitting his head open farther. “And this one, is for Charlotte.” She said as she threw the final blow that put him face down in the snow. Rage took over and she continued to strike his lifeless body. Suddenly she stopped and looked down at him, laying still in the bloody snow.

Reaching down into the snow, she grabbed a handful to clean off the tire iron and her hands. Putting the tire iron back on the floorboard, she walked over to David and looked down at him, still wanting to hit and kick him. Reaching down, she grabbed him by the ankles and dragged him approximately three hundred yards down into a ravine, leaving a trail of blood.

Grabbing the wig and sunglasses off the hood, she got back into her car and shoved them into the compartment beneath her seat then backed up, stopping to look at the blood stained snow just as the sun was dipping down below the horizon. Putting it in gear, she pulled away without looking back. Her hands were gripping and wringing the steering wheel as she turned back onto the main road. She was crying and breathing erratically, almost hyperventilating as she struggled to control her emotions. She knew what she had done was wrong, but it gave her some sort of closure at least in a minimal amount.

Knowing she had to get rid of the tire iron, she took her eyes off the road for a moment to reach back and find it on the floor board. Just as she returned her eyes to the road, she saw the deer standing in the middle of it. Slamming on her brakes, she hit the deer as she swerved to the side of the road.

Stopping the car, she got out to look at the damage done. It had smashed the front of her car, pushing the radiator into the fan. Looking back, she saw the deer flailing around in the middle of the road. She walked to her door, reached in and grabbed the tire iron then walked to the deer, hitting it repeatedly, to put it out of it’s misery.

Looking at the tire iron in her hand, she pitched it into the woods as far as she could throw it. Then she dragged the dead deer off of the road and got back into her car. Making it through Pendleton, she drove the car as far as she could before all it’s coolant had drained and it over heated only five miles from home.

For thirty minutes, she sat in her car on the side of the road, avoiding the need to call Scott. She was stranded and didn’t have much choice but didn’t want to have to explain why she had been beat up, again. Digging through her purse, she pulled out some tissue papers and some make up to clean her face up and attempt to hide any bruising that had probably already started. It was dark and she was hoping he wouldn’t notice. Then the thought crossed her mind and she reached beneath her seat to grab the red wig and sunglasses and throw them into her book bag. She would rather take her chances having them on her as apposed to being in her car, in case they were to search it while at the garage.

Leaning against the front of her car as headlights approached, she lifted her arm to shield the lights from her eyes. Scott pulled up just in front of her, leaving the headlights on so he could see her damage. As he got out of the car, he placed the red flashing bubble on top of his car. Riley walked around and climbed into his front seat, throwing her book bag in the back. She knew it would take a few days for her car to be repaired.

Scott examined the front of the car for damage, then got back into his car. With the dome light on, he looked at her, placing his hand on her face. “Riley, are you alright?” She merely nodded her head as he leaned over and kissed her. First he called for a tow truck, then began to fill out an accident report. “Where’s the deer?” He asked.

“It’s a few miles back. It was dead and I removed it from the road. Then I tried to drive home and this is as far as the car would make it before it overheated. Where are you having it towed because I’m going to need a loaner until it is fixed.”

“Don’t worry about that. I have a good friend who works at the dealership. He’ll make sure you are taken care of.”

“Will you take me in the morning to get it?” She asked.

“Of course. Bright and early so you’re not late for class.”

“Thank you, Scott. What would I do without you?” She smiled.

He reached down and took her hand, holding it in his then pulled it to his mouth to kiss it. “I don’t know Riley, but from this point on, I hope you won’t have to find out.” She smiled at him, trying to hide the reality of what she had just done. “What were you doing here, anyways?”

“I.. um… went to a different restaurant for dinner. Someplace new and out of town.”

He merely smiled at her then got out of the car as she seen the tow truck pull up. Her heart was pounding wildly, nervous about her close situation. She wondered how long it would take to discover David’s body. Her hands were shaking as Scott got back into the car. As the tow truck pulled away with her car, he followed it back to town, then turned away from it to take her home.

Pulling into a parking spot, he shut off the car and reached to open his door. She laid her hand on his arm. “Scott, please, I don’t feel good and I’m really tired. I’m just going to do my homework and go to bed.”

She knew he was disappointed when he looked at her and smiled. “Ok, I’ll see you tomorrow?” He asked.

“I’ll call you in the morning and we’ll go from there.” She said and leaned over to kiss him. “Thank you again.”

He watched her walk across the parking lot and in through the glass doors before he pulled away. Riley shut the door and locked herself in the apartment. Leaning her back against the door, she dropped everything in her hands as she slid down the door until she was on the floor. Burying her face in her hands, she wanted to scream as the tears streamed down her face. She felt sick, angry and hurt.

For long minutes, she stayed, cramped against the door. As she stood up, she looked down and realized she had David’s blood all over her and instantly worried if Scott had seen it. Going directly into the bathroom, she grabbed a white trash bag from beneath the sink and stuffed all her clothes, including her coat, into the bag as she took them off. She closed the bag then stepped into the shower.

She left the white garbage bag by the front door after she dressed and before she went to the kitchen to search for something to relieve her aching stomach. After eating, she laid down in bed, neglecting her homework and already having made the decision to go home for a few days. Riley tossed and turned in bed for hours before she fell asleep.

Hearing the knock on the door, she opened her eyes, thinking it had been a dream. Then she heard it again, along with Scott’s voice. Looking at the clock, it was seven AM when she pulled herself out of bed and walked towards the door.

Opening the door, Scott looked her over. “You’re not ready, did I just wake you?” He said and stepped through her doorway, reaching up to her eye that was now clearly black and blue. “Riley, what happened?”

“I smashed my head into the rear view mirror when I slammed on the brakes, hitting the deer.” She lied to him again. “And yes, you did wake me. But give me a few minutes, I’ll be ready.” She said as she turned to walk back into the bedroom.

He grabbed her arm and turned her back around, pulling her against him. Looking into her eyes for only a second, he closed his and kissed her passionately. She responded with the same enthusiasm. Pulling back, he looked into her eyes again. “Good morning.” He said and smiled.

“Good morning, Scott.” She smiled back at him. “I’ll be right back.” She pulled away from his embrace and walked towards the bedroom.

Quickly, she threw on some clean clothes and socks, then came out and grabbed her shoes to sit on the couch and put them on. Then she grabbed her purse and keys and opened the door. Scott picked up the white bag of trash and followed her to the door.

“I don’t mind taking this out for you.”

Looking back at him, she seen he had the bag. “No!” She almost yelled, then smiled at him. “I’m sorry. That’s not trash. They’re just old clothes that I’m giving to good will. Don’t worry about them, It’ll give me something to do after class today.” She said, taking the bag from his hand and throwing it behind the door. Her hands were shaking as she locked the door.

“Where is your coat? He asked her.

“I vomited on it last night so I put it in the washing machine. I still haven’t put it in the drier. Don’t worry, I’ll be fine.”

He took off his coat and put it around her shoulders as they waked down the hall. “It’s cold out there. You don’t need to be getting sick in your fragile condition.” She almost hated him for saying it, but pushed it to the back of her mind.

Having roughly an hour before class was to start, and after getting the keys to the complimentary car, they decided to catch a quick breakfast at his usual place. As she sat, looking over the menu, starving, she realized that she felt better than she had in a long time. Looking up at Scott, he was looking back at her, examining her. He too, could see a certain relief across her face. It seemed to put him at ease, knowing she was feeling better.

After they ordered breakfast and the waitress left, Scott reached his hand across the table and grasp hers. “I would love it if you would come over for dinner tonight.” He invited her.

Knowing her intentions already, she didn’t yet want him to know them, until she was already there. “That sound’s like a great idea, but I’m not sure I’ll be available. I’ve been struggling to raise my grades and I need to concentrate.”

She watched the look in his eyes turn to disappointment as he looked down at the table. “Oh. Ok.”

Riley suddenly felt guilty that she had turned him down. She really did enjoy spending time with him, but right now, she yearned to be around family and needing to somehow tell them about the pregnancy. Then the thought crossed her mind telling her this is why she wasn’t interested in any romantic inclinations at this time. But she also realized it was too late to back out of this relationship. She suddenly felt trapped by her feelings.

As he looked back up at her, he saw the tears that welled up in her eyes. “Scott, I told you once that I can’t give you what you want right now. It still remains that way and I’m sorry.”

“Riley, what exactly is it that you think I want from you?” He asked her.

She was left shocked and confused by his question, not sure what to say. “You want me to give you something that I’m not emotionally capable of right now.”

“I understand that. And right now, I want you to just be with me. I don’t want you to get discouraged just because I told you how I feel. But I think eventually, you will open up to me. At least I hope so.”

She just looked at him for a moment, knowing he wore his heart on his sleeve. But she could feel herself trying to push away as he was trying to pull her in. “Just give me a few days to sort things out. I’m not saying that I’m going to avoid you again, but I just need to think.”

“Patience I can award you, and yes, please don’t avoid me again. I will wait until you are ready and you can call me.”

The waitress approaching with their food caused the conversation to be halted. Both of their minds were reeling as they ate. Scott paid the bill as they walked from the restaurant. He met her at her car. Wanting to give her the space she desired, he felt the need for a long good bye as he pressed her against the car and kissed her. Gently grasping her hair in his fingers, he whispered in her ear with out looking at her. “Just remember, I’m in love with you, Riley.”

She watched him as he walked away, then look at her as he got into his car. She waved at him before he pulled away, still seeing the look of disappointment on his face. She drew in a deep breath as she got into her loner car and drove back to her apartment, ignoring classes for the remainder of the week. Gathering a few items, she threw them in her suitcase. With suitcase in hand, she grabbed the white trash bag and threw them both into the backseat of the car.

The weather was welcoming as she started on her long drive back to Crystal Falls. Exiting off the freeway somewhere between Chesterfield and Crystal Falls, she drove behind the local grocery store and threw the trash bag in the dumpster, along with the red wig and sunglasses. Digging through her purse, she gathered all the information about them she had wrote down and threw it away too. She didn’t need any kind of evidence that could link her to them in any way. She knew they would search her if anything ever surfaced.

Then she pulled away and merged back onto the freeway. She had not told her family that she was coming and there was no one home when she arrived. Raiding the refrigerator, she was already hungry. Soaking up the relief and comfort of home, she laid on the couch to watch TV as she munched on some snacks.

Even with the million thoughts racing through her mind, she was able to fall into a deep sleep. Noah being the first to arrive home, he gently shook her, trying to wake her. She opened her eyes and looked at him.

“Daddy.” She said weakly as she sat up.

“Where is your car?”

“It’s getting repaired. I hit a deer.” She simply answered him.

“What are you doing home?”

She drew in deep breath but knew it was alright to let the tears fall. And they did. Noah sat beside her hoping that his daughter had at least somewhat overcome her trauma by now. Wrapping his arms around her, he tried to comfort her.

She wanted to wait until her sister was home to tell them together, but she was having difficulty holding it in. “I’m pregnant.” She blurted it out with her head still tucked into his chest.

With her emotional state, he knew it was a result of her weekend detainment at the cabin. He said nothing to her, just continued to hold her in support. Just as she had begun to calm down, Aleah walked through the door. Seeing her sister’s state of mind, she was immediately concerned and knelt down in front of her.

“Riley?” Aleah said then looked at Noah, but reaching her arms out for Riley.

Riley pulled away from her father and hugged her sister. “I’m pregnant.” She whispered in a shaky voice.

Immediately, Aleah also knew it was the result of the rapes. “What are you going to do?” She asked Riley, although Riley couldn’t produce a certain answer yet.

“I don’t know. You know I’ve always been against abortion, but I couldn’t bare to keep it. It would be a constant reminder of the worst thing that’s ever happened to me. It’s bad enough I’ll have to endure nine months of constant reminders.” Riley started to cry again.

Although she was somewhat relieved to get it off her chest, she didn’t really feel any better. Now she just wanted to be alone and refused to go to dinner with them. She headed up to her room while Noah and Aleah left for dinner. Sitting on her bed, she looked through her old photo albums, remembering her childhood that she knew now, was perfect. Seeing pictures of her mother, she cried with her memory.

She had decided to take the albums back to Newport with her, something for her to turn to when she feels down, other than Scott. Thinking of him her thoughts instantly centered around him and she smiled. She knew he was truly her savior and she suddenly realized her feelings for him were very real. And very strong.

Between the lack of good, sound sleep and the extreme fatigue due to the pregnancy, she fell asleep with the thought of Scott in her mind. Aleah came to her room when they returned, but seeing her sleeping with such a peaceful look on her face, she decided not to disturb her.

Riley slept the entire day and night, tossing and turning while feeling the hunger in her stomach. It was forty five minutes before dawn when she opened her eyes and looked around the dark room. She stretched and smiled, knowing she had finally received the quality and duration of sleep she so desired.

Cooking breakfast for all three of them, she knew they would begin to get up soon. And she was right. Noah was the first to come into the kitchen. The sun was just beginning to light up the eastern sky. She served him a cup of coffee with his breakfast and he knew she was feeling better. Aleah joined them shortly after.

After her father and sister both left for work, she changed into a pair of sweat pants and a sweatshirt then went to clean up the kitchen. Lounging around the house, thinking of mostly Scott, for the next several hours, it was just after noon when she decided she should call him.

Not recognizing the number, he answered his phone. Hearing her voice felt like a weight had been lifted from his shoulders. “Riley, where are you? I’ve been trying to call you since last night.”

“I’m sorry, Scott, I had to come home for a few days. Tell my family about the baby and think about things for a while. At least I was able to catch up on some sleep. That makes me feel better.”

“When are you coming back?” He asked, wishing she was already there.

“Probably not until Sunday. I’ve decided to take the rest of the week off from classes.”

“Sunday?” He said, not liking her answer. “I’ll miss you. I already do.” He paused hoping for a response. “Have you seen the news?” He finally asked.

“No, why?”

“Riley, they found a body just outside of Pendleton. At the trail head. He was an eighteen year old kid who was beat to death with some sort of blunt, metal object. Then was drug three hundred yards down into a ravine. A man on a snowmobile passing by found him last night.”

“Oh my God, Scott. Do they have any suspects?” She was instantly nervous that his body was found so soon.

“No. Forensics have the body, they expect an autopsy to be done tomorrow. There are many questions with no answers.”

“And you were worried about me, not being able to contact me, with a killer on the loose.”

“Yes. I was. Why didn’t you tell me you were going home?”

“I’m sorry, Scott. I know I should have. I’m sorry to make you worry about me, but how was I supposed to know they were going to find a body?”

“You’re right, I was jumping to conclusions. I’m really glad you called me, I was worried. But now I know you’re safe. Please call me if you decide to come back early.”

“You’ll be the first to know.”

“Riley, I love you.” He said then reluctantly hung up the phone.

Turning off the phone, she slid it down her ear to her chest where she held it against her. Then she looked at it for a minute before calling him back then waited for him to answer.

“I guess I wasn’t quite ready to say good bye yet.” She said and he smiled.

“I’m glad you called me back because I wasn’t either. But I’m trying to give you your space.”

“I know. And I appreciate that.” She found herself suddenly nervous and tried not to reveal her feelings. “But it seems really nice to hear your voice right now.”

“Yours too. All I have to hold onto right now is the sound of your voice.”

What he said made her want to run back to him, but she was still confused. “How did you get to be so sweet?” She asked.

“I’m not, really. Only to you.”

She grasped the phone harder, feeling the deep ache in her chest. “Alright, I’m going to let you get back to work now. Maybe I’ll call you later, after you get out of work.”

“I’ll look forward to it.” He said.

She smiled as she put the phone down on the coffee table. Looking down at her stomach, she rubbed it, trying to grasp the reality that there was life growing inside of her. She suddenly found herself depressed and reeling from the speed of her changing moods.

With each passing hour, so did the urge increase to run back to Scott. She began to wonder if she was falling for him too, with the strong feelings she was getting about him, especially when he’s around. Thinking of the way his arms felt around her and the way he kissed her, she felt the chill down her spine.

Laying on her bed, wide awake and staring at the ceiling when Noah arrived home, she came down stairs. They waited for Aleah to come home so they could all go out for dinner. Noah knew she was feeling better, and so did Aleah when she finally came in.

After dinner at Riley’s favorite restaurant, Noah took them both shopping for new clothing and shoes and a new coat for Riley. Having thought about Scott the entire time, she had decided to return to Newport. Saying good bye to her father and sister, it was nearly nine thirty by the time she left to begin her long trip back.

The closer she got to Newport, the more excited she seemed to be about seeing Scott. Instead of returning to her apartment, she found her way back to his house and parked in the street. Scott had expected to hear from her hours ago but was just about to go to bed when he heard the knock on the door. Cosmo was standing beside the door as he opened it, wearing only sweat pants.

“Riley!” He was completely surprised to see her at his door step.

She merely took two steps up to him and reached up to pull his lips down to hers. He pushed the door shut as he responded to her kiss with deep passion. Pulling back to look at her for a moment, he seen a new spark in her eyes as he kissed her again.

“Riley, what are you doing here? I thought you weren’t coming back until Sunday.” He said as he helped her remove her coat, then threw it on the chair.

“I couldn’t go another minute without seeing you, Scott.”

He smiled as he leaned down to kiss her again. Overwhelmed with emotion, she grasped his hair with both hands and pulled him closer. “Scott…” She whispered with his lips still touching hers. He opened his eyes and pulled back to look at her. She walked a few steps from him, trying to align her words. Turning back towards him, she was just out of his reach as she began.

“I don’t know what it feels like to be in love, but I know that I can’t stop thinking about you. And when I do think about you, I long for your arms to be around me and your kiss to be on my lips. When I think about you, I get a cold chill down my spine and my whole body tingles. I think I’m falling in love with you, Scott.”

He stepped to her and kissed her harder, pulling her into his arms. “You don’t know how much I wanted to hear you say that.” He paused only to say, then kissed her with a deeper passion than she had ever felt. “Please stay with me tonight?” He whispered, pausing his kiss again.

“Yes.” She answered him.

Pulling away from her, he took her hand and led her around while he locked the door and turned off the lights. Then he led her up the stairs, into his bedroom and up to the bed in the dimness of the nightlight. Pressing his lips to hers, he followed her as she sat down then laid back on the bed, with the kiss continuing.

Without having to fight to keep the memories of the cabin at bay, she knew she was ready. And hoped he knew too. “Scott…” She whispered and pushed her head into the mattress as his lips moved to her neck.

“Do you want me to stop?” He asked without removing his lips from her neck.

“No.” She whispered as she grasped his sweat pants and pulled his hips closer to hers. “I want you, Scott.”

He pulled back to look into her eyes, still seeing the spark through the darkness of the room. “Are you sure?”

“Yes.” She answered and kicked her shoes off.

He gazed down at her for a minute before kissing her again. Feeling the warmth of his hand on her bare skin beneath her shirt, she leaned up and pulled it off. He discovered she was not wearing a bra when he reached up and began to fondle her breasts. She moaned and her body began to tingle wildly as she responded to his touch.

Suddenly, he leaned up and stood to his feet. She watched him as he removed his sweat pants and underwear and she did the same, then he sat on the bed and slipped beneath the covers, joining her, and pressing his naked body against hers. The feel of his skin against hers made her body tingle even more as he leaned over her and kissed her.

“Are you sure you’re ready for this? It’s still not too late to stop.” He whispered to her again, wanting to make certain.

“Please, Scott, don’t stop.” She whispered back, with goose bumps sweeping over her skin from the tickle of his light touch across her belly.

Leaning down to kiss her again, he climbed over her with his hips between her legs. She could feel his erection poking her but he waited to insert it. Sliding down, little by little as his lips moved down her chest, he licked at her nipples, making her gasp. Drawing in a deep breath, she exhaled a moan. As his lips kissed her scar down it’s entire length, she suddenly felt awkward but the passion remained.

She was nearly squirming beneath him as his lips made their way back to her neck, softly biting her. In a slow, continuous motion, he pushed himself deep inside her and held his position for a moment, feeling her trembling beneath him. She moaned again and pulled him closer. With one hand, he pushed the hair from her face and looked into her eyes as he kissed her again.

Slowly, he began a rhythm and she realized how different it was from rape. Bad thoughts left her mind as quick as they appeared as he pushed himself in deeper. Her breathing grew deeper as she moaned again, uncontrollably.

Feeling his hot breath as he nibbled on her ear lobe, she felt the tingle spinning out of control as she rocked her hips with his. “Scott…” She called out his name as her orgasm peaked and crashed. Other than the dream that woke her, it was the first time she had ever experienced an orgasm, since she was fifteen and experimenting with her body.

The trembling grew harder and her moaning louder as he continued his pace, inserting himself deeply. Her arms were tightly wrapped around him and her excitement sent him over the edge. His body jerked as he slowed his rhythm to a gradual stop. Tucking his face into her neck, his breathing was rapid. The release she had felt was substantial, leaving her feeling relaxed and peaceful.

As they lay together intertwined, breathing erratically and hearts racing, she knew she was in love with him. It was no longer vague. And he grew more in love with her. Pulling his head out of her neck, he looked down at her, his eyes sweeping across her face and smiled as he kissed her again. Scott rolled off of her, and she cuddled into his arms.

“I love you, Riley.”

“I love you, Scott.”

Their quiet words was the last sound before they both fell asleep in each others arms. Riley’s were the first eyes to open in the morning. Feeling his naked body against hers, and knowing it was him, she smiled and tightened her arms around him. Lifting her head up to his neck, she softly kissed it. Scott tightened his arms around her and drew in a deep breath as he turned his head towards her and smiled.

She kissed him and he repositioned himself so he was facing her. With the memory of last night fresh in their minds, the kiss intensified as they both became aroused again. With a kiss here and a touch there, they initiated lovemaking again, this time in the early light of day. It seemed to Riley to be more intense than the first time. After they finished, neither one of them wanted to get out of bed, they just wanted to stay together all day.

But then she began to feel those familiar feelings she had begun to get used to. Covering her mouth, she jumped out of bed and ran out of the room, trying to remember the closest bathroom upstairs. Concerned, Scott followed her to see the bathroom door shut. Looking at Cosmo, who was sitting beside the bathroom door, he realized the dog was protective over her because of her pregnancy. It now made sense to him.

Hearing the shower turn on, he went back to his room to pull on his underwear, then went downstairs to make something for breakfast. After she came out of the bathroom, she went back to his bedroom to put her clothes on. Serving her a plate of bacon and eggs with fried potatoes, he showered while she ate.

Glancing at the clock, she knew she had just enough time to stop and pick up her car, that should by now, be repaired. Riley finished eating and began to clean the kitchen when Scott returned back downstairs, fully dressed. Finding her in the kitchen, he came up behind her and wrapped his arms around her waist.

“Danny called me yesterday to tell me your car was fixed. Are you going to go get it?” He whispered as his lips brushed across her neck.

“Yes. I was planning on stopping before school.” She said and turned her body towards him.

“Ok.” He said softly as his eyes swept across her face. His arms tightened around her as he lowered his head to kiss her.

“Scott… we can’t do this again, we both have to go…” She whispered as his lips brushed across her neck.

He pulled away from her. “Yes, I know. It’s just that when you’re around, I can’t seem to keep my lips off of you.” He smiled. “By the way, I wanted to tell you that the boy, the child abuse victim, is going to make a full recovery, although he will have scars.”

“I’m glad to hear that.”

With one softer kiss, they both left and went their separate ways. Riley felt relieved to have her car back as she drove straight to the car wash to thoroughly clean it. As she vacuumed around the seats, she found a cell phone. Pausing to look through it, she determined it was David’s phone. She felt relieved to be the one to find it. Then she found pictures of her on his phone. She was at the cabin, taped to the bed and was clearly unconscious as she did not remember them taking any pictures. Rage overtook her as she threw the phone on the ground and smashed it with her foot. She wondered how many people seen the pictures.

With her mind constantly changing between the pictures, and her night and morning with Scott, she tried to keep a smile on her face as the day seemed to fly by. For the next couple of days, they spent all their free time together, after work and classes. Staying at his house, they made love again, seeming to not get enough of each other.

Scott woke up Saturday morning, finding himself in bed with her, at her apartment. Although he had the day off, there were a few things he needed to accomplish as he got up and kissed her good bye. She spent the day alone cleaning her apartment and catching up on her studies.

Hours had passed before Scott returned. He took off his coat then his holster, hanging them on the back of a dining room chair. Riley looked at his gun as he came up to her and embraced her. “Riley, have you given any thought about what you might do about the baby?”

“Are you kidding me, Scott. I can’t seem to stop thinking about it.”

“What are you thinking of doing?”

“Well, I’ve never agreed with abortion, that’s out of the question. And I couldn’t bring myself to keep it, I could never forget the hell I went through. Adoption. I will carry it throughout the pregnancy and adopt it out. That is the only path to the end of the tunnel.”

He hugged her, agreeing with her decision. “Whatever happens, I will be there for you.” He whispered in her ear.

“Thank you Scott, that means a lot to me.” She whispered back.

“Come on, get dressed, I want to take you somewhere.” He suggested as he pulled away from her.

It was getting close to dinner time when Scott pulled his car into a crowded parking lot. She looked at him as she got out of the car and walked around to the front. “Where are we?” She said as she looked around.

“I wanted to bring you to this. It is a memorial dinner for the boy whose body was found. They are needing the money to bury him so I thought we could help.” He said to her just as her eyes landed on Chuck who was standing just outside the door. He was looking directly at her and his stare seemed to burn a hole through her soul.

Suddenly, she turned away and ducked down to get back into the car. “Oh my God, Scott. I can’t do this.” She exclaimed as she felt her stomach turn. There was fear in her voice and her entire body began to shake.

He walked around to her side of the car just as she vomited on the ground. “Riley, what’s wrong?” He asked, noticing her nervousness. He knelt down beside her, avoiding the vomit on the ground.

“I need to go home. I’m suddenly not feeling well. I can’t go through with this.”

Scott was confused by the panic in her voice and on her face, but he got into the car and drove away. Reaching his hand across the seat to hers, he held it without asking the questions he wanted to. She was crying and shaking as he drove her back to her apartment. The memories of the cabin suddenly crashed over her, leaving her feeling scared and depressed.

Without a word, he parked in the parking lot and came around to her side of the car to open her door. She got out and stumbled, nearly falling as she ran back inside the hallway. Scott followed her and she knew she had to come up with some sort of explanation. But he didn’t ask, only held her in a tight embrace once they were inside her apartment.

She was still trembling as he wondered what changed her mood so suddenly. She couldn’t seem to stop crying as the tears fell like a hard rain. “Riley…?” He spoke her name.

“I’m sorry, Scott.” It was all she could say for now, she wasn’t sure what else to say to him.

“Ok. It’s Saturday night and I know you must be hungry. Do you want to go somewhere else or stay home?”

She closed her eyes, using every ounce of strength to regain her composure. Living this close to the men who violated her, she was bound to run into someone. This time she did, before she could complete the final revenge. And now she knew that he knew she was still alive. It gave her the strength she needed to follow through, she just wasn’t sure exactly when or how. Realizing what she was thinking about in Scott’s embrace, she tried to clear her mind.

Pulling back from his embrace, she looked up at him and wiped her eyes. “Yes, I am hungry. But why don’t we go to the store and pick up something to make for dinner at your house.”

“Ok.” He shook his head then leaned down to kiss her.

His kiss seemed to melt away all the horribleness of the memories that had suddenly encompassed her like a tight blanket. Drawing in a deep breath, she tried to release all the tensions with the long exhale.

Riding with him in his car, they stopped at the store to pick up a few steaks to cook on the grill. She picked up a half gallon of milk and a two liter of pop. They decided on a flavor of potato chips that completed their list.

Returning back to his house, she relaxed on his couch while he cooked. She was still struggling between thoughts of good and evil but managed to maintain a cheerful persona. Riley and Scott shared a quiet evening alone, relaxing and watching TV. Riley could still feel the burn of Chuck’s gaze.

Since her return from Crystal Falls, it was the first night they shared without making love. It was satisfying to both of them, just spending time together. The Sunday passed quickly with them both lounging around the house. With evening approaching, they decided to go out for dinner. Scott noticed that she was more at ease now, and still had questions he wanted to ask her. But he postponed them, not wanting to upset her again.

After dinner, she had him take her home, to her apartment. She needed some time alone and to concentrate on her studies, knowing she had an upcoming exam. Scott walked her to the door where he said good bye with a long kiss before he pulled away from her hand and left her alone. Walking into her apartment, she straightened her books and prepared them for her return to school the next day. After watching TV for a short time, she turned it off and went to bed early.

She wasn’t sure what time it was when she heard the click of the light that suddenly shone in her face. Just as she opened her sleepy eyes, she felt his hands tighten around her neck. Then she felt the weight of his body as he sat on her, his knees on either side of her hips.

“I wasn’t going to give you the pleasure of surprising me with what ever plan you concocted. I know it was you, Riley, that killed my friends. Now they have their DNA. All they need is my sample and I‘m going to jail for a long time.” She heard Chuck’s voice ring through the silence as his hands tightened even more. She was fighting to breathe as she reached towards the nightstand for anything she could grasp. Feeling the hard glass, glass of water, she grabbed it and smashed it across his head, water splashing her.

His hands released as he fell sideways onto the bed. She grabbed at her throat, gasping for air as she pulled herself from beneath his weight and stood to her feet. Without turning on the kitchen light, she ran towards the phone and grabbed it. Feeling Chuck as he tackled her to the ground, she was pinned to the floor, on her stomach as she struggled to get away.

Chuck pulled at her shorts, trying to remove them but she was damned that it would happen again. Screaming, she fought with him as he covered her mouth with his hand. “You were hands down, the best one we’ve ever caught. I miss the feel of my dick in your pussy.” He said to her, just above a whisper as he continued to struggle to pull her shorts down.

Painfully aware that she was loosing the battle, he succeeded in pulling her shorts down, and she felt him as he thrust himself inside of her. With his arm tight around her neck, he raped her again as she cried and continued to struggle to free herself while gasping for air. As he released himself inside of her, he loosened his grip, giving her the chance to pull herself away. Instead of pulling up her shorts, it was easier to kick them off to give her full range of motion with her legs.

Running towards the kitchen, she grabbed the biggest knife from the butchers block and turned to see him coming towards her. The knife in his hand was bigger than the one he had at the cabin as he slowly came at her.

“You should’ve died in those woods, why didn’t you?”

“Because you failed to kill me. Now It’s your turn to die.”

He laughed, then lunged at her, jabbing the knife towards her. “You’re pretty smart to figure out what happened with Charlotte and Hannah. If Hannah says a word, she’ll die too.” He said as he walked closer and jabbed the knife towards her again. Riley knew Hannah’s life was now in danger.

She jumped back, avoiding the stab then lunged at him, pushing her knife into his groin. With one hand, he grabbed himself as he jabbed her with the other hand holding the knife. The knife buried deep into her stomach and she screamed as she felt the pain. Pulling the knife out, he stabbed her again in his attempt to kill her. She screamed again and pushed him away with all her strength then ran towards the phone that was laying on the floor.

With the phone in her hand, he tackled her again and they hit the wall before they hit the floor, knocking over a shelf and all it’s contents. Again, she found his hands around her neck as he straddled himself over her. With the strength of a punch, she buried the knife beneath his arm, deep into his side and twisted it, puncturing his heart.

She watched him, jerking as his grip on her neck gradually weakened and he fell over. Pushing him off of her, she crawled to the phone that had been knocked from her hand again. She felt the gush of blood from between her legs and knew the baby had been injured. She was bleeding from her stab wounds and quickly losing blood.

With bloody, shaky hands, she dialed Scott’s cell phone. Waking up from a deep sleep, he answered the phone on the third ring, seeing her number on the caller ID. “Riley?” He answered in a weary voice.

“Scott… please… help… me.” It was all she could say before losing all her strength and passing out.

Instantly alarmed and worried, he called to send an ambulance to her apartment while he threw on his sweat pants and shoes. Pulling a shirt and his coat over his shoulders, he grabbed his gun and keys and was out the door.

Arriving just before the ambulance, he ran towards her apartment and found the door had been forced open. Pulling out his gun, he pushed the door open to see Riley laying on the floor, in a pool of blood. He ran to her, then seen Chuck laying three feet from her. He checked her to find a weak pulse, then checked for a pulse on Chuck. He was dead.

Waving for the paramedics to enter her apartment, he knelt on the floor beside her, nearly in tears. “Riley?” He softly spoke and brushed her face. She was unresponsive and it scared him more. The paramedics attended to her wounds as they laid her on the gurney and loaded her into the ambulance. Scott called the attack in to dispatch and they sent other detectives to the scene as he left to follow the ambulance to the hospital.

Three hours he waited for the doctor to come to him, fearing the worst. The woman in the long white coat entered the waiting room and he walked directly up to her. “Riley, is she ok?” He asked her frantically.

“Riley will be fine. We managed to stop the bleeding and close the wounds. The fetus, on the other hand, was severely injured, causing her to miscarry. I’m sorry we couldn’t save the child.”

Scott ran his fingers through his hair as relief washed over him. “When can I see her?”

“She’s in recovery. The nurse will come to get you in about a half an hour when she begins to wake up from the anesthesia.” The doctor informed him as he reached out his hand to shake hers.

At least he was able to sit down, finding himself waiting again. He wished he had some way to contact her family, but the only information he had was that they lived in Crystal Falls. What seemed like forever, he waited before the nurse came to get him and lead him to her room.

Walking up beside her bed, he reached down and took her hand. With his other, he softly stroked her face. “Riley?” He spoke to her.

She slowly opened her eyes to see him standing there. “Is he dead?” Was the first thing that came out of her mouth.

“Yes. You don’t have to worry about him. He is dead.”

A feeling of relief washed over her and she began to cry. The incident left him with more questions that he wanted to ask her, but waited until she was more alert. Leaning down, he kissed her softly, rejoicing in the fact that she had survived the brutal attack.

“He raped me again.” She whispered in a sob and realized she had revealed the truth about her assailants.

“What are you talking about, Riley? What do you mean, again?”

“I don’t know, I can’t think straight right now.” She tried to cover up what she had said.

He set her confession to the back of his mind, for now, leaving him with even more questions. He stayed with her for an hour, till just after dawn but wanted to gather information from the crime scene. “Riley, you need rest. I’m going to go see what I can find out about your attack. But I’ll be back in a few hours.” He kissed her again before pulling his hand back to walk out the door.
