A N A S T A S I A

DREAMS ALWAYS FEEL REAL, especially when your in REM sleep which is also the absolute worst time to be woken up.

Unfortunately for me, someone doesn’t seem to understand that.

“Ahh!” I scream as I rolled off of my bed in the morning because someone thought it was a good idea to pour ice cold water on me.

My entire shirt was see through and I could clearly see my bright pink sports bra underneath it.

That was the moment I realized, my best friend Kendall, decided to wake me up. Terribly, might I add.

“Oh my god!” He roared with laughter so hard that he had to hold onto his stomach. He couldn’t seem to stop.

I can’t believe Kendall actually thinks this is funny, so I tripped him in hopes that he’d stop laughing at me. It worked for only a moment before my plan backfired on me.

Instead of falling backwards like I expected, he tried to balance himself and fell forwards... right on top of me to be exact.

Our faces are mere inches apart and I can’t help it that when we look into each others eyes, my breath hitches into the back of my throat.

I feel like I can’t breathe — like I’m on cloud nine. Suddenly, he leaned in closer and my eyes fluttered closed as he placed his lips upon mine, kissing me.

Shit, I probably have morning breath.

“Happy birthday Ana.” He said breathlessly with his forehead on mine and I may or may not have taken a quick peek to see if his eyes were closed too.

They were, so I closed mine again, faster than lightning because I wanted to savor this moment for as long as possible.

“Thank you,” I replied breathlessly before we began to get up

Kendall pushed himself up with his arms and once he was standing above me, he held out his hand for me to grab onto.

Grabbing it, he helped pull me all of the way up. Maybe with a little too much strength since it got to the point where our chests were touching.

He seemed happier than usual, even when he began to look at me like there was something he really wanted to say. Although, I guess he decided against it.

“Hurry up and get ready birthday girl, we’re almost late for school and I’m driving today,” he said smiling and left before I could reply, closing my bedroom door on his way out.

Kendall is 16, one year older than me, but we’re still in the same grade since his birthday is after the cutoff date and he had to start a year later.

Technically, he’s not allowed to drive me anywhere since I’m still a minor, but he does anyways. Although, I’m pretty sure everyone at our school, Rosemoor high does that.

Once he was gone, I ran into my bathroom, washed my face, brushed my teeth, and then put my hair up into a messy bun before heading over to my closet.

Deciding against dressing up, I threw on a big navy blue sweater that’s thin with some black leggings because I get self conscious when I show a lot of skin.

Walking downstairs, I found that Kendall was already waiting for me outside by his car, so I hurried up as I grabbed an apple for the ride.

Taking a bite, I began walking towards him when he opened the passenger side door for me with a small bow and I couldn’t help but smile.

“For you birthday girl,” he said as I sat inside and he closed the door for me. Then he made his way around the front of the car and got into the drivers seat.

The entire drive to school consisted of us singing along to the music. We turned to our favorite music station and playfully argued about what songs are better like we usually do.

The drive here seemed like it was shorter than usual. Eventually, we both began walking our separate ways, saying bye to each other before the bell rang.

Then, when he was no longer in sight, I hung my head low as I hurriedly walked to my first period.

I made it to class right before the bell rang and sat in the front left corner next to the large window, away from most people... Like always.

During class, there were only a few individuals who made fun of me, but it’s okay because I’m used to most of it now.

I just don’t let it bother me and try to ignore them as much as I can. It’s been happening since last year, my freshman year of high school...

All because one girl whom everyone loved began to hate me.

Class finally ended and I was the first person out of room like always because I don’t want to get stuck in there with all the people who hate me.

Walking to my locker, I’ve got a huge smile on my face as I’m expecting Kendall to be there since his is right next to mine.

But my smile drops the second I see him, because he wasn’t alone... No, he’s making out with the schools ‘it’ girl.

Also known as my biggest bully, the one person who caused all of my torment; Sydney Black.

I stood there, shocked as he had her pushed up against his locker with his hand on her ass.

In my current state of shock, I must’ve dropped my books because the next thing I know is that they stopped making out.

Instead, they began facing me with full blown smirks on their faces.

“Aw, is the little nerd sad that Kendall doesn’t have feelings for her?” Sydney asks as they both walk over to me, with his arm around her waist.

“Lost for words I see.” I couldn’t move, I was frozen in place.

All that I could do was stare at Kendall in shock, while pushing back all of the tears that are threatening to fall.

“You didn’t think I could actually like someone like you? Did you? You’re just some pathetic nerd I hung around because I felt sorry for you. I never actually liked you.” The hatred in his voice could be heard from miles away and if it’s even possible, my heart broke even more.

How could he steal my first kiss only to do this?

I can’t handle this, everything that they’re saying is just too much. In a quick motion, I bend down to gather all of my books from the ground before shoving my way between Sydney and Kendall on my way out of this hell hole.

Right when I stepped outside the school doors, I ran all of the way home and the tears just wouldn’t stop.

Once I was home, I ran into my mom and told her everything that happened when she gave me a choice...

Stay here and try to move on or start new — go live with my dad and do online school because that is something we have always talked about if the bullying became too much.

The decision was easy and after giving my mom a tight hug, I ran upstairs and began packing anything that I’ll need when I go.

Picking up my phone, I call my dad and hope that he’s not too busy right now.

“Hello?” He answered on the third ring and I took a deep breath.

“Hey, dad.”

I’m trying my best not to cry right now, “Hi pumpkin, what do you need?” He asked, because we don’t really get to call each other that often since he’s rarely ‘not’ busy.

“Something happened, so I’m going to start doing online school and go live with you for a bit.” He could probably tell in my voice that I didn’t want to talk about it anymore.

Luckily, he always said that I I ever needed to or wanted to go live with him, I could.

“Okay, when?” He asked without prying and I was very thankful.

“I’m coming tonight.” I replied, zipping up my suitcase.

“Okay pumpkin, see you soon.” He said and I nodded my head before realizing that he couldn’t see me.

“Bye, dad.” I said, hanging up the phone.

It’s time for a new beginning.
