I have just moved to the neighborhood a few weeks ago. I am not usually a people person; I like my alone time more than anything else. But when I saw her for the first time, she seemed like somebody I would be friends with.
She had a smile on her face as she extended her hand to me and said: “You are new here! I am Gena.”
I answered: “Yes, I just moved here last week. I am Matilda.”
“Lovely name.” she said as she left the elevator: “Have a wonderful evening.”
After that brief encounter, I haven’t seen Gena for a while.
I had just moved to the city to start my dream job; a magazine editor. It meant that I would spend long hours at the office and sacrifice my social life, but I was up for it. Writing is my passion, and this job is a great opportunity for me to get ahead in my career. I spent the next couple of weeks focused entirely on my work and getting to know my colleagues.
It’s not like I want to become best friends with them, I honestly don’t think it’s advisable to mix friendship and work, but it doesn’t hurt to get along with people you spend 12 hours a day 5 days a week with.
I spent the weekends at my boyfriend’s house. I forgot to mention that another reason for my move was to be close to him. We have been together for a year and for the last six months, we’ve been in a long distance relationship. It was difficult but I was too busy with my studies anyway. He was too busy with his job as well.
This weekend, my boyfriend is attending a seminar out of town and I will be staying at my place for the first time in four weeks.
I could use the alone time to pamper myself with a long bath and binge watching a recommended show on Netflix. I haven’t done that in a while.
As I entered the building, I saw the only person I knew, Gena. I had a heavy bag of groceries and she opened the door for me.
" long time no see.“ she said : “ I thought you moved.“
“ No, I am still here.” I said giggeling : “I was just very busy with work these couple of weeks. and then I spent the weekends at my boyfriend’s”
“oh, I see. and what is it that you do?”
" Well, I am a magazine editor. I work for a relationship magazine.”
" that sounds cool. I love relationship magazines. I can see that you are preparing for a long hibernationa by the amount of food you have.”
" oh, yeah, I have nothing in my fridge and I don’t really cook so these are frozen meals that should last me a while.”
" You don’t cook? So you are living off of these only?”
" Well, I do eat out and order-in, but yeah these are pretty much the things I eat when I am at home.”
