Chapter 1

“Throw the trash out, Kennedy!” shouted the head cook that I worked part time for.

Lazy fat cooks who calls themselves chefs.

I yanked up the bags of black garbage bags and opened the back door to the kitchen. A cold breeze hit me as I dragged the bags to the garbage bin. I slowly threw each one into the bin. When I was done I huffed and straightened my black shirt and apron.

I was about to head in when I heard glass shatter at the corner of the garbage bin. I frowned and walked over to see a tall boy hugging his body with his hand to ward of the cold as he looked at me with his big brown eyes. His lips were trembling from the cold. He looked awful.

“Hey, are you okay?” I asked gently, trying to be careful not to scare him away.

He didn’t reply, instead, he just kept staring at me. I sighed and walked inside. I grabbed a plastic bowl and a take away plate and begin piling food onto the plate. I ladled the chicken soup that stewing on the stove into the bowl.

Yes, I am basically taking from them but it’s not like they aren’t cheating me from my tips.

I moved to grab my scarf and my oversized sweater that I hung up in my locker and stuffed under my arm as I carried the food in front of me. I pushed myself out the door. I hoped that the boy was still out there.

When I went to the area that I last saw him he was now sitting on the ground clutching his legs to his chest. My eyes softened at the sight and I went down on my knee. I placed the food in front of him.

“Hey, my name is Kennedy. I brought you something. The top bowl is soup. The bottom is some bread and pasta.” I pushed the food closer to him. He looked at me with uncertainty.

“Please, eat it. It is warm and would warm you up.” I said. He looked hesitant but he reached for the soup and opened the cap. He ate quickly and fast.

“Easy now.” He was drinking so fast I think he would have burned his throat with the hot soup.

I grabbed the oversized sweater out from under my arm and my black scarf and handed it to him. His calculating gaze was still looking me over as if trying to figure out why I am doing this.

“You need to keep warm. You must be cold out in this kind of weather.” I made a motion with my hands for him to take it. He sat the soup down and grabbed my offering. He pulled the sweater over his head and down his body.

I can see that he wasn’t all that skinny. His white shirt lifted and showed me his abdomen and I knew that he was a fit boy. I wondered what made him decide to come out and hide like this?

“Thank you.” His raspy low voice spoke finally. My eyes flitted up to him and a grin came to my face.

“You’re welcome. Stay warm. I would find shelter soon, it would only get colder as night time comes.” I replied and got up to go back inside the restaurant.
