It's been three weeks now since I came to Paris. One of my favorite things to do here is sitting on my balcony that has a beautiful view of the Eiffel Tower. I landed a great apartment in the middle of the city. I've made a new friend. Her name is Emma and I met her in my art class. She has been very kind to me and has been showing me the city. It's nice to have someone in my life that's really just a friend. Emma has a boyfriend that she has been with for almost three years. They live together. I've joined them for dinner several times. I really like their company. When I first got her Leo and I kept in touch. Lately, all we do is send each other a text here and there. Nothing really deep or anything really special. I can still remember our last night before I left for Paris.
"I can't believe your already leaving. These two weeks went by fast." Leo said to me.
"Yeah, I'm super excited," I said. His face looked a little pained. "You could still give it all up and come with me," I said to him.
"Oh yeah, could you see me in Paris? I don't think I'd fit in." He said smiling. "Besides my cousin is setting me up on a date tomorrow night," Leo said standing up and pacing the room.
"Has he told you anything about her?" I asked.
"Not really, just that she is a nice girl and he thinks I would like her." I smiled at him.
"Maybe you will, like her," I said. I couldn't shake the feeling that this hurts a little to hear, but this was the point. It was time for us to move on. I could never be with anyone until I truly let go of Dante. "You are going to go, right?" I asked him.
"Do you think I should?" He asked me. I nodded at him.
"I think you should at least try."
The next morning Leo took me to the airport. My parents were still away in Seattle. We had a long talk on the phone about my plans. They were very supportive of my choice. Right before I got on the plane, Leo pulled me into his arms. "I hope you will find what you're looking for, but if you don't, I'll be waiting for you." He said. My tears threatened to fall as he kissed me on the lips and said goodbye. I watched him walk away from me. I took a deep breath and cried the entire flight to Paris.
Now here I am. I'm happy and my life is going good. I love the city and my art class. I only go three times a week and the rest of the time I enjoy life. I was sitting outside a cafe one day reading a book when I looked up, there was a very good looking man looking my way. I blushed a little and looked back at my book. He was a little intimidating, the way he was looking at me. He was dressed in a very expensive looking suit and had dark hair and eyes. His hair fell a little long around his face and he had a close-shaven beard that lined his face. He looked older than me. The one thing I did focus on was just how good looking he was. I thought for sure he was going to talk to me, but he only stayed about ten minutes longer before I saw him get up and pay his bill and leave, but not before he turned back to me and smiled.
I'm actually glad he didn't talk to me. I don't know if I would have been able to resist the urge to talk back to him. Right now I really just needed to focus on myself. I paid my bill and put my coat back on and started to head home. "You're not from around here are you?" I heard a deep voice say behind me. I turned to see the man from the cafe standing against a building.
"I'm sorry?" I said.
"Your American." He said. I just smiled and nodded at him. "I'm sorry, I don't mean to pry, it's just your a very beautiful woman. I wanted to just leave you be, but I just had to know your name." He said moving closer to me.
"Adriana, but you can call me Beth," I said. He smiled at me. Wow. Was all I said to myself.
"I'm Paul Mullins. It's nice to meet you, Beth." He said walking towards me putting his hand out to me.
"It's nice to meet you, Mr. Mullins," I said, respectfully.
"Please Beth, call me Paul." He said. "So Beth, can I take you to dinner sometime?" He asked. I really should have said no, but of course I didn't. I agreed to meet him for dinner at eight tonight. He kissed my hand and left.
Great was I actually doing this. I had told myself over and over again, not to do this. This was my time, but then again it was only dinner. It wasn't like I was dating the guy. I smiled to myself and made my way back to my place. I had some time to kill so I decided to take a shower and when I was done I just hung out in my robe, listening to music. I went to my kitchen to make some tea. I pulled out my cup and filled it with water. I stuck it in the microwave and turned it on. I went to the cupboard and pulled out my tea and I grabbed the sugar. All of a sudden something hit me. It was like a force went through my body. Sugar is comforting in Paris. It replayed over and over again in my mind. Oh my god, was he trying to tell me something?
Did he try to tell me where he was all those months ago? My hands started to shake and I ran to my bedroom. I found the letter in my nightstand I pulled it out and read the letter over again. Paris is beautiful in the summer. He wrote. It was summertime when I got the letter. Sugar is comforting in Paris. He was trying to tell me, he was in Paris. I took a deep breath.
"You're going to write a couple of letters lover," Allissa said.
"What do you mean?" I asked her.
"I need for you to convince Beth and her family that you have moved on with me." She said. I started to laugh.
"None of them are going to believe that I chose you over Beth." I saw the anger rise in her eyes.
"Just do what the fuck I said Dante, or else." She picked up her phone and showed it to me.
"Fine Allissa, I'll do it," I said. She set her phone back down. Then she handed me paper and some envelopes. I sat down and started to write the letter to Enzo first. When I was finished with it Allissa took it and read it. She sat it back down and I started to work on the one for Beth. Allissa wasn't paying attention to me as I wrote two different letters. When I finished I had Allissa one of them to read, hoping she didn't see the other one in my hand.
She read the letter and approved it. "Good, now seal them up and let's get them mailed." Allissa said. As I put the letters in the envelopes, I wrote down a little message inside Beth's envelope. I sealed them up and mailed then. Please sugar understand my message. I said to myself.
I was running around my apartment like a nut job. What do I do? Do I call my family? Do I try to find him on my own? Fuck! I yelled. My head kept going back and forth. What if I was wrong about the message? What if I was right? Screw it, I said to myself. I'm calling Enzo. I pulled my phone out and dialed Enzo's number.
"Hello Beth, how are you?"
"I'm good, thank you."
"What can I do for you?"
"I know where Dante is."
"And how do you know this?"
"Because his letter was a clue."
"Yes, he was letting me know he was here in Paris."
"How do you know that for sure?"
"Just trust me. I know it for sure. What do I do?"
"You need to go on like you don't know. Keep up appearances. I'll get back in touch with you soon. Beth listen to me when I say this, leave it alone or you could get him killed. You have no idea what he is going through right now. I will be in touch."
"Okay, but please hurry."
I hung up with Enzo and looked at the time. I had one hour before I had to meet Paul for dinner. Enzo said I needed to keep up appearances. I ran to my room and started to get ready. I had chosen a purple tight fitted dress and I left my hair down. I grabbed my purse and headed out the door. I needed to calm down and regain myself. I slowed my pace and took my time getting to the restaurant. Get a hold of yourself Beth. I said. I turned the corner and looked around at the front of the restaurant. I didn't see Paul anywhere. I walked over and stood outside for a moment. "I didn't think you were going to show up." I heard a deep voice say behind me. I turned and looked him in the eye.
"And why is that?" I said. He walked over to me and put his hand on my shoulder.
"I just wasn't sure you really meant it when you said yes." I smiled at him and we walked into the restaurant.
As we took a seat, Paul's phone went off. "One second, I've got to take this." Paul said. He turned to his side and started to talk. I picked up the menu and decided on the chicken. Paul turned back around and looked and looked annoyed. "Sorry about that." He said.
"Is everything okay?" I asked.
"Yeah, it's fine. I was just let off for the night and now they want me to work, but I can go in later." He said.
"Please don't let me keep you. We can always do this a different night." I suggested.
"No Beth, it's fine" He said. I nodded at him and we sat there and started to get to know each other. He told me how he was born and raised here, how he works for a large company. I told him where I was from and my love for art. He seemed like a very nice guy.
The waiter brought us our food, and we started to eat. "Wow, this is amazing." I said. Paul laughed.
"Do you like it? This is one of my favorite restaurants." He said. Then I saw his eyes move to beside me. "Damn it." He said under his breath.
"There you are Mullins." I heard a voice say behind me. "Your really going to ignore the bosses order for a girl?" The voice said. A girl? I said to myself. I went to turn around and I saw two men standing behind me. The one talking just looked at me. The other one was facing away from me.
"A girl?" I said. The man looked down at me. Then the other guy turned and looked at me.
My breath got caught in my throat and my heart started to pound. I couldn't believe what I was seeing. Dante looked straight at me. His eyes looked scared.
