Chapter 1 ~ When Life Gives You Lemons

“There. That’s the last box.” I dropped the small box of yarn and kicked it to join the mound of boxes in the new living room. I was done. Almost. I had finally finished unloading my things from the U-Haul truck I had rented out front. My new life was starting tomorrow and there was still the unpacking to do. I took a small break and chanced a peek at my phone. Shit! It was 4:36pm. I jumped up from my spot on the floor and bolted out the door. After locking up, I raced to the rental and jumped inside to make my way to the closest U-Haul location. They closed at 5pm on Sundays and it was almost a 20-minute drive to the one nearest me. I pushed the pedal down and went as fast as I dared, praying to make it there in time and avoid what I’m sure would be a costly enough late fee.

15 minutes later and I was pulling into the lot of U-Haul. Thankfully I had made it with a few minutes to spare. I swear, whenever you are in a hurry, it seems like everyone else on the road is determined to drive at a snail’s pace. I jumped out and walked into the office portion to hand in the keys. I took a seat while I was waiting for a cab to come grab me when I realized I had forgotten to grab my back up bag from the truck. I walked out of the office over to the truck. Seeing that I had left it unlocked I opened the driver’s door, stepped up, and started rooting around for my bag. As soon as my fingers closed around the strap, I pulled it up and stepped down to hear a gun being cocked behind me. I froze instantly, knowing that any sudden movements might scare the person and make them think I was up to something and cause them to shoot. In my calmest voice I spoke.

“Please don’t shoot. I won’t scream. Can we talk about this?”

I read somewhere that you were more likely to live if you kept the shooter talking. I just hoped that it had some truth to it.

“Don’t talk to me! Just shut up and give me the bag!”

He had a younger voice and sounded nervous. I hoped that meant he would be less likely to shoot me. Although, I knew nerves and a gun were a dangerous mix, so I figured it’d be best to just do what he said as to not make him even more nervous. It wasn’t like I had anything valuable in the bag anyway just some gum, my license, my new work I.D and about 10 bucks. It was a back-up purse for a reason. I’m just glad I left my actual purse at the house.

“Ok. I’m going to turn around and hand you the bag. Please don’t shoot.”

As I was talking, I was doing what I said, and that proved to be a mistake. The guy lunged at me, grabbed my bag and pulled hard enough to throw me off balance. My hand got caught up in the strap and with me being unbalanced, he must have thought I was fighting back because he smacked me across the face with the gun and took off running.

I saw stars as my body rushed to the ground. Falling and the sound of footsteps coming towards me were the only things I remember before everything faded away and my vision went black.
