Chapter 19

Maggie

The moment Chen and I leave the room, the cold breeze hits my skin. I brace myself for the impact of the chaos that awaited me. When my body lands, I roll as bullets come flying our way behind a wall. There were screams and curses in Chinese as Chen dives beside me. I try to stay calm as more bullets come shooting at us. With a growl, I turn around and shoot a man on the stairs in the shoulder.

Chen grins then shoots the man who’s now screaming in pain from my shot in the head. “You’ve got a pretty good aim.”

“I learnt to shoot a gun when I was twelve years old.” I mutter nonchalantly.

Best. Lesson. Ever.

Chen looks at me with surprise. “What?”

I nod proudly. “Held one when I was nine.”

His eyes widen. “Are you serious?”

“I know my way around a gun. So, don’t worry about me. Just look after yourself.”

He bites his lip. “I don’t want to leave you, but I need to find my brothers.”

I wave him off. “Go, I’ll be fine. You’ve got a role to play.”

“Get yourself out of here. I’ll meet you upfront.”

I nod as three more men come forward. They shoot with everything they’ve got until bullets come flying through the air and into the side of their heads. Grabbing my gun, I turn around and shoot one of Li Wei’s men right in the dick. I crouch, preparing to move on forward and at the corner of my eye, I see movement. Quick as a flash, I shoot him in the eye. He screams in pain as I walk over. Once I stop above him, he begins to cry like a little girl. With a smile, I shoot him four times in the head.

“Are you Maggie?”A voice comes from behind me.

With the gun in my hands, I turn around and find myself looking down the barrel of a gun.

I point my gun at him. “Yeah. Who are you?”

He lowers his gun and sighs in relief. “Your father sent me to come and collect you. My name is Seth.”

With a silent nod, I motion for him to lead the way, and we make our move, but as we turn around, somebody shoots him in the chest. Furious, I holster my weapon and shoot him in the mouth. I then rush to Seth’s side and press down on his blood-soaked chest. “Come on, get up!”

“I’m not going to make it.”

“Not a chance.” Shaking my head, I check him over and come across a throwing knife. I take it from him and without hesitation, I dig into the bullet wound. “I’m sorry, but this is going to fucking hurt.”

He hisses and roars in pain until finally I get the bullet out and chuck it somewhere on the floor. I help him to his feet and wrap his arm over my shoulder. All we can hear are screams, crying, and prayers. We walk together, guns cocked and walk towards the front door. With dust in the air and the smell of sweat, it makes me wonder how long the gunfight’s been going on. It’s fucking chaos in here and I want nothing more than to get out of here.

“We’ve got to go!”

“Go! Save yourself!”

“Seth, which way?”

He coughs and groans as he points in front of me. “Straight on.”

Bang. Bang. Bang.

The three rounds send splinters flying in the air with even more dust. The gun-smoke and sawdust start to irritate my lungs so bad I have to cough. I pull my pistol up and empty the clip into the figure hiding in one of the rooms. I shoot him at point-blank range, no less than two feet away. He screams and falls to the ground. Dead.

One step forward, then another. With one arm around Seth and the other holding a gun, we come closer to the front door. We pivot around the corner, to see three large men stand in a row five feet away. Another man appears out of the darkness and stands near the exit, blocking off all possibility of escape. Panicked and looking around wildly, I only see one way out, and that’s the one the guards are standing in front of.

“Shit.” I murmur.

One of the guards laugh. “Yup. That pretty much sums up what’s left of your life.” His face is full of adolescent acne scars as well as scars he’s probably received in an untold number of fights. He adds. “Yuta! Look what we’ve found.”

The men make room for Yuta to pass, and he does it without a word or cast a glance at them. As he comes to stand in the front, I can’t help but notice his white shirt’s got a trail of blood coming from his shoulder. As soon as we make eye contact, he looks at me curiously. “And where do you think you’re going?”

“Home.” I snap.

Yuta opens his arms wide. “This is your home now. With us.”

I scoff as I bring up my gun and point it at him. “I don’t think so. I’m getting out of here.”

He motions to Seth. “With him slowing you down? I don’t think you’ll get very far, sweetheart.”

“You’re going to let us pass and if I see you doing even the slightest fucking move, I’ll pull the trigger and don’t think I won’t.”

He shakes his head. “You won’t get out of here. Every one of your father’s men is dead. So, drop your gun and come here. Now.”

I shake my head. “No.”

“I won’t ask you again.”

“Then, don’t.”

Just as I take a step forward with Seth holding me for dear life, a bullet comes out of nowhere and shoots Seth between the eyes. I swivel to the side to see Kang smirking, and holding a gun with smoke coming out of it. I gasp in horror as blood splatters onto my face. I watch as Seth’s body drops to the floor, and can’t help but feel mournful. I run over to where Kang is with the intent to kill him, and when he brings his gun forward I don’t stop. Just as I reach him, a bullet hits him in the shoulder and he drops to the floor while clutching onto his shoulder. I dig my heels into the floor, stop and look around to see smoke coming out of Yuta’s gun.

“Brother! What the fuck?” Kang yells as he points his own gun back at Yuta.

Suddenly, another shot goes off just inches away from Kang’s foot. “Fuck!”

Everyone turns their head to see Chen.

“Where the fuck have you been?” Yuta asks.

Chen ignores the question and continues walking.

“Glad you could join us, Chen.” Kang grunts.

I turn my head over to Chen coming towards me, but I frown when I realise he doesn’t move to go and stand with his brothers.

“What are you doing, Chen?” Yuta asks.

“Choosing a side, brother.” He reaches behind him and pulls out a gun.

My heart stops.

I stand transfixed at the centre between Yuta and Chen.

My feet refused to move.

“Why are you fucking standing there with her?” Yuta orders.

Chen stands in front of me and pushes me behind him. Yuta watches the whole thing. He looks away and shakes his head.

“You’ve got to be kidding me.” Yuta stands motionless for a few seconds, then drops his head and chuckles. “It’s you, isn’t it? The spy?”

Chen points his gun at Yuta. “I never wanted to be the bad guy, brother.”

Yuta scowls at his brother. “Look at yourself. Think about what father will say when he realises what you have done to this family by conspiring behind our fucking backs!?”

“What I’ve done!? Do you want to know something, brother? I’ve never said this to anyone, but I think it’s about time I told someone. I was there when mother died. Oh yeah, I was there. Saw everything. I was told to go and find her and tell her that father wanted to see her.” He clears his throat. “I shouldn’t have listened to that monster. Mother and I were inseparable. She was the one who told me to keep going because she knew how much I hated this fucking life. I wanted to grow up like a normal kid. I mean, what kind of life is this? Who would want a life like this?”

Yuta sighs. “Chen, we were born into this. We don’t get to decide.”

“I don’t care, Yuta. I didn’t want this. Never wanted any of it.”

Pause.

“Chen...”

He cuts his brother off. “In the end, I never got the chance to tell her that father wanted to see her because do you know why? She was fucking dead!”

Yuta remains silent.

“We’ve got no idea what we’re doing. We’re young. We listen to what father says because he’s too old to get out of his chair then do it himself. I don’t want to be a dog, waiting for its next order.”

“Watch what you say, brother!” Yuta yells.

Chen ignores him. “I’ve kept this secret for so long that every single day, it’s just been waiting to burst out of me.”

“What are you talking about?” Kang asks.

“I know who wanted her dead, brother.”

If he knows that it was my father who shot her, then shouldn’t he point his gun at me?

“Brother, think of what father will say when he finds out his own son betrayed him.”

“I don’t care! I don’t want this kind of life anymore. I’ll die before I let him tell me what to do again.”

Pause.

Yuta steps forward. “I’m going to give you a chance to apologise to everything you just said, and join me and Kang.”

Chen growls. “I’m going to give you a chance to apologise what you did to mother.”

I gasp.

Yuta glares at his brother then chuckles. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“Don’t fucking lie to me, brother!” Chen roars. “Just tell me why you did it.”

“I told you, I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

Chen’s voice quakes. “Lying again. I’ve got enough information telling me that it was you who wanted her dead.”

Kang frowns. “What’s he talking about, Yuta?”

Pause.

Yuta looks at both of his brothers and shakes his head. “That women you called mother, well she wasn’t my mother. She was yours and Chen’s.”

“And for that you got her killed? What the fuck, brother!?” Kang shouts.

“She was a fucking rat. She got what she deserved.” Yuta mutters.

Chen’s eyes widen. “What did you just say?”

“For years, she was feeding information about what father was doing to the cops. She was a rat. Father found out, told me and asked me to get a hit-man to shoot her. So I did.”

Chen takes a few seconds then shakes his head. “And let me guess? You were never going to tell us about it.”

Yuta sighs. “At the time, I thought it was the right thing to do.”

“What about now?” Kang asks.

He shrugs. “I don’t know.”

Another pause.

Chen shakes his head, smacking his lips. “I can’t believe I’m saying this, but I’m willing to forgive you if you let Maggie go.”

From the floor, Kang snickers. “You’re siding with her? A fucking whore?”

I leave from behind Chen and grab Kang under his arms, yanking him upright. The moment he’s on his feet, he bends forward as if he’s going to pass out.

I press my gun hard against his temple. “Call me a whore again!”

But he doesn’t utter a word.

I scoff at him and shove him away from me. “That’s what I thought.”

As I walk back towards Chen, a roar comes from behind me.

“You’re a fucking whor...”

Just as Chen aims his gun, I put my hands on my ears and crouch down. When I look back up and behind me at Kang. He lies on the floor, with a hole in his chest. His own flesh and blood just shot him.

“Chen!” I shriek.

“He isn’t dead and besides, he was going to kill you, and he would have succeeded if I had not shot him.”

“He’s still your brother.”

“Not after today, he isn’t.” Chen spits.

’So, that’s it. You’re leaving the life of men to what? Running away with her? A whore?’

Chen grabs my hand and pulls me back to him. “Her father’s a better man than ours will ever be.”

“Rabid ‘Bull’ Eye? No. He’s exactly like our father.”

“I’m taking her back where she belongs.”

Yuta scoffs and motions to the guards behind him. “Good luck, but I don’t think you’ll make it.”

“Brother, after what you did, let her go.”

“She’s a whore, Chen! Our whore. She doesn’t go anywhere!”

I shriek. “Stop calling me a...!”

His head swings to look at me. “I’ll call you whatever the fuck I want!”

Chen steps forward, his hand still clasped with mine and sighs. “What do you want from me?”

“I want to know where your true loyalties lie.”

Chen chuckles. “You already know that. Since I heard about what you did, my loyalties changed.”

He frowns. “What are you doing?”

“She didn’t deserve any of the shit we’ve put her through.”

Yuta remains silent.

“Same with mother. She was innocent. And mother or not, she still treated you like her own son.”

Yuta looks away and tenses his jaw.

“Maggie is and always has been innocent. That’s why I’m going with her and leaving this life behind me.”

“How romantic, but it’s the wrong choice, brother.” Yuta turns his head, brings up his hand and pulls the trigger.

The hallway ricocheted with noise. Bullets leap from the gun and soar through the air into his younger brother.

My eyes widen. “No!”

A splatter of red appears on Chen’s chest before he collapses to his knees. His face goes blank with shock, and his lips round with disbelief. One second ago, Chen was alive. His heart was beating. I turn around, stagger slowly forward, my hands clamp over my mouth, and rush to his side. “Chen! No!”

Footsteps approach. “I gave him a choice and he picked wrong.”

I turn my head and glare. “Even if he had chosen to go back with you, you would’ve killed him regardless. He never had a choice.”

He just smirks.

I point my gun at him. “I’m not going with you.”

“You really don’t have much of a choice.”

I get up to my feet and stand face to face to him. “Then, I guess I’ve got nothing else to live for."

“What.”

“I give up. I meant what I said, that I’d rather die than become your whore.”

He looks at me in boredom. “You were a whore even before you became one officially.”

“Just kill me.” I babble in a voice thick with fear. “Just kill me, please.”

“And if I don’t?”

Tears fall from my eyes as I bare my teeth to him. “If you don’t shoot me, I’m going to shoot you.”

“Fine. Have it your way.”

Without another word, Yuta pulls the trigger.
