I grabbed the last ingredient for rainbow shots. The crowd behind me was eager which didn’t surprise me. Rainbow shots were a hit although they were easy to make. I grabbed the cocktail shaker and spun around to face the group who had ordered the drinks. I smiled at them before pouring the drink out into the six shot glasses. People screamed as the colours changed from blue to red and I couldn’t hold back my smile.
“Everyone ready,” I asked.
Each person from the group stood in front of a coloured shot.
“Hands behind your back,” I yelled over the music. “One, two, three, drink!”
Each person bent their hands down to the counter and grabbed the glass between their lips. They picked their heads up and downed the shot was fast as they could before dropping the glass back the counter. It almost looked like they had finished at the same time.
“And yellow wins,” I announced with a smile. I grabbed the vodka and poured into another shot glass and slid it toward her with salt and lemon on the side. “And here is your shot on the house.”
She smiled at me before downing it. She and her friends walked away and I had a second of peace before orders were shouted at me. After a while of mixing more drinks I heard my name being called out. I looked beside me to see Annie looking at me expectantly.
“Yeah?” I shouted.
“Ben said your song is going to come on in a little while so you better finish up,” she told me and I smiled.
Ben was the DJ for several nights a week and also Annie’s crush. She looked for any excuse to speak to him and always blushed around him which shocked me. Annie was tall with an athlete build due to all the sports she played. She had black hair which was in a pixie cut and she almost always wore black. She fought when necessary and was a complete badass. I liked to see her fumble and blush around Ben because it always reminded that underneath that hard exterior was a complete softie.
“Excuse me.” I heard a deep voice say. I turned to look in front of me to find a man in a suit. The lights of the club made him look multicoloured and I wanted to see what he looked like. I cocked my head slightly to the right before asking him what he would like.
“An Old Fashioned.” I froze for a second before I started making his drink. Who walks into a club wearing a suit and ordering an old fashioned? I thought to myself. Sure, it was a popular drink but very rarely was it asked for in this club.
I passed him his drink and he took it and walked away. I quickly stepped away from the counter and walked toward Annie. I leaned in and whispered thanks.
“No problem Chrissy. Just hurry up, this place is packed.” I nodded and walked out from behind the bar.
This is club Castle and it was the newest club the city. It was also quickly becoming the most popular. Tonight was the last Saturday of the month which meant it was theme night. Tonight’s theme was the 2000’s and I was so excited. The music from that time were some of the best and by how many people were here and dancing, I think they agreed.
I don’t work here, not really. The club is owned by an old high school friend, Andrew Kelly. We fell out of touch after high school but a year ago he found me and asked for my help. He wanted to open a club and needed some capital. I was extremely sceptical at first but he was so determined and I gave him some money from my trust fund. Looking around the club, I made the right decision.
I reached the centre of the dance floor just as my song came on. I closed my eyes and felt the music. I watched some girls struggle with their heels and shook my head. I knew better than to wear heels. They made you look sexy but looking sexy was so not worth it. I always wear jeans and my sneakers unless theme night required different attire. I spent more time picking out my tops. Tonight I had chosen a sparkly black top with spaghetti straps that stopped on the waistband of my jeans.
As I continued dancing I felt a tap on my shoulder. I turned around and came face to face with a black covered chest. I looked up to see my favourite bodyguard. We all called him Papi. He was wearing his usual black shirt with made him look extra scary.
“Hey Papi,” I yelled.
“Hey,” he said with a smile. “Andrew wants to see you.”
I huffed. “Alright. Oh and Papi, those two guys with the leather jackets at the end of the bar,” I said as I pointed at them, “they were harassing a couple girls. They grabbed a few of them too. You know what to do.” His face hardened and he made his way to them.
I smiled and made my way to the VIP section on the second floor. That was one of the only few rules in the club. No harassing. Sure, you could grind and grope as much as you wanted but it had to not be forced.
I made my way up the stairs and walked over to Andrew’s section. His section was at the corner of the room with a plush couch and low table. He could also look out at the whole club if he wanted to. As I got closer I saw Andrew sitting with his around his new squeeze, Eva. She was beautiful and sweet and I quite liked her. It was a shame he would be bored of her in no time. Sitting a little away from them was the man in the suit. His gaze locked on me as I walked towards them.
Eva saw me before Andrew did. “Chrissy!” She got up and hugged me. “I am so bored,” she whispered in my ear.
“Don’t worry. I’m here to save you,” I whispered back. We pulled away, laughing. “Hey Drew.” I gave the man with the suit a smile but he simply looked down at his drink. Rude.
“Christa, I have great news,” announced Drew.
I turned my attention to him. “What’s going on?”
He motioned to the rude man. “This is Antonio Pérez.”
I took step forward and extended my hand. He looked surprised for a second but then the same neutral expression returned. He stood up and shook my hand, his eyes meeting mine. His hand was cold and so much larger than mine. I noticed how callous it was. Gym or manual labour?
“Christa Light. Nice to meet you Antonio.” He simply nodded and pulled his hand away.
“Antonio is going to invest in the club,” said Drew. “The club isn’t even opened during the day. Antonio wants to turn it into a meeting area. A quiet place to discuss business, conduct interviews and things like that,” Drew rambled on. He was really excited.
“That’s amazing,” I said with a genuine smile. Andrew was really succeeding and I was happy for him. I hugged him but pulled away when I heard someone clear their throat. We turned to Antonio.
“I’m sorry Andrew but do you always discuss your important work with the help,” he said flatly. My jaw dropped slightly. I made your drink asshole! I should have poisoned you.
I was ready to voice out my thoughts but Andrew spoke before me. “She’s part of the business. She lent me capital to buy this place and get it going. She simply bartends for fun.”
I couldn’t help but smile triumphantly. Antonio looked unfazed and sat down.
I turned to Andrew. “I should be going.”
“Alright. Oh, we’re having a casual party tomorrow at my place to celebrate this,” he said.
I raised an eyebrow at him. “Is it actually casual or are you lying like last time?”
He chuckled. “Casual, I promise.”
I laughed too. I gave him and Eva one final hug and gave a slight smile to Antonio, who barely acknowledged it, before I left.
I stopped by the bar to get my bag and I left. It was easy to get a cab. Most parked outside the bar and just waited. I gave him my address and watched the buildings go by as I got closer to my bed.
