Chapter 11

It was the next day and I still hadn’t heard anything from Lucas. I even went out to his spot and he wasn’t there. I drove around most of the night looking for him, but I didn’t find him. I texted him throughout the night. I couldn’t sleep I was so worried about him. It was only six in the morning. I took a blanket and went out to our porch. I sat in the porch swing with my phone in hand and just watched the sunrise. I didn’t know how to help or what was going on. I felt helpless and he wasn’t reaching out to me.

Maybe I don’t matter to him as much as he matters to me. My heart was very torn. I really just wanted to know that he was okay. I heard the front door open and my mother came out onto the porch with two cups of coffee. She smiled at me and took a seat. She handed me a cup and we both to a drink. “What’s going on with you and Lucas?” She flat out asked me. I looked back at her.

“What? nothing? Why are you asking that?” I didn’t know what else to say.

“Come on Scarlet. I’ve known you your entire life. I know something is going on between you two.” She said. I couldn’t come out and tell her. I just couldn’t do it. I really wanted to, but all I did was a lie.

“You crazy mom, I promise you there is nothing going on with him and me,” I said and looked away from her. I know she knows I’m lying, but how do I say. Yes, mom, I’m in love with your husband’s son, a guy I hated for years is now the man I love. She looked at me while she sipped her coffee.

“Okay Scarlet we can go with that for now, but let me tell you this. Lucas is not someone you want to get mixed up with. He is not good for you.” She said. I turned and looked right at her.

“And tell me why that is?” I said to her. She looked at me.

“It’s not my place to say anything Scarlet. That’s something for you to talk with Lucas about.” I took a deep breath.

“Mom, Lucas and I are just friends nothing more,” I said and got up to leave.

“Wait, Scarlet, If you care about him at all. Don’t give up on him.” She said and I was blown away. She got up and walked past me. Just then my phone went off. I pulled it out and didn’t recognize the number.

“Hello?” I said.

“Scarlet?” The voice said.

“Yes, this is her,” I said.

“This is Gage, Lucas's friend.” He said.

“Oh hello Gage, what can I do for you?” I asked him.

“Well, I’ve got a small problem.”

“Okay, what can I do?” I asked.

“Lucas is here and he is completely wasted. He keeps calling out for you.”

“Oh god, what’s your address?” I asked him.

“That’s the thing, I’m at the jailhouse. He got into a huge fight last night and I need you to bail him out.” Gage said. I took a deep breath.

“I’m on my way,” I ran upstairs and jumped into the shower. I was so worried about Lucas and I didn’t really know what condition he was going to be in or how much trouble he was in. I wanted to say something to his dad about it, but I thought that might only make things worse. Besides I had a credit card that Jack gave me years ago that I could use, so I didn’t really need him for anything. I jumped into my car and headed off. I found Gage sitting outside the jailhouse waiting for me. “What happened?” I asked him.

“It was bad Scarlet, he wasn’t himself last night. We went to a bar downtown because he wanted to drink. Something he never does, So I knew it was bad, but I’m his friend so we went. He told me about you and him.” He said and I sort of blushed. “Then he went on about his father and how they were going to act when they found out about you two and then it just got worse from there. Someone started to talk shit to him. At first, Lucas just blew it off, but then the guy’s sister asked Lucas to dance with her. Lucas blew her off and it pissed the girl off so she told her brother what had happened. One thing you should know about Lucas is that he can fight, but drunk Lucas can well, let’s just say he sees black and you never know what can happen. This is a very big reason why he doesn’t drink. Needless to say, he beat the shit out of this guy and got arrested.” Gage said. I took a deep breath.

“Okay, let’s go see what we can do,” I said and we headed inside. I spoke with the police and it turns out that Lucas can be in a lot of trouble if the guy wants to press charges. It cost me five grand to get him bailed. It also took them almost three hours to let him go. Gage and I sat and waited for him. Then he came walking out of a door and he looked like hell. I took a deep breath and started to get up. He looked at me as he went over to the desk to get his things and sign some paperwork. Once he was done I walked over to him.

“Hi, baby.” He said.

“Don’t you hi baby me, Lucas Dalton. What the hell is the matter with you?” I didn’t even know that I was this upset. He just looked at me.

“I’m sorry Scar.”

“That’s not good enough. Why didn’t you call me? I could have come to you. We could have worked this out together. Instead, you turn to alcohol?” I snapped. He just took a deep breath.

“Baby, I’m not going to drag you into my problems.”

“Oh so getting drunk and fighting is the better choice. Lucas, I love you. Your problems are my problems. Stop shutting me out and let me be there for you.” He just took a deep breath and pulled me into his arms.

“I’m sorry, can we just go home I really need to sleep.” He asked me. I nodded at him, but this was not over. I was going to get answers damn it. I can’t keep doing this with him. I start school soon and my free time was running out. I wanted to be with Lucas, but not only halfway. We needed to figure out what we were going to do and he needed to stop keeping secrets from me. That much I knew. We got back to the house and Lucas went off to his bedroom. I couldn’t follow him only because everyone was home. I waited to see if Jack was going to follow him into his room, but he left him be. I was glad for that. I knew Lucas needed rest and I didn’t want Jack making things worse for him. I went into the kitchen where my mother was baking something that smelled yummy.

“What you making?” I said as I took a seat at the bar.

“A cake.”

“It smells great.”

“I saw you come home with Lucas.” She said.

“Is he okay?” She asked me.

“Yes, he is fine,” she just nodded at me and went back to her baking. I took a deep breath.

“Mom, I need to talk to you about something,” she looked over at me. “Can I trust you?” I asked her. Something that I didn’t think I would have to ask, but I needed her to know it was important.

“Why would you even ask me that Scarlet. I’m your mother and you should always know you can trust me.” She said. I took a deep breath.

“I’m in love with Lucas.”
